Hello,
I'm wondering if it's possible to desimlock the droid x .
I know that the Droid is only available with a verizon plan, but on Amazon, I can buy one without contract plan ( but work only with a verizon sim )....
So, if I Do that, can I root the phone to be able to use it with my sim card in belgium?
thanks for your help !
I am certainly not an expert, but I don't think you can use any type of SIM card with Verizon. I don't have a SIM card at all on Verizon, as I did when I used at&t or t-mobile
Ok ! thx !
But I'm really stupid to ask this question... I Have not see before that the Droid X is Only CDMA ... And in europe we only use 3G xD ! ...
My thread is useless.... sorry
U may use 3g but it is likely GSM, even if it is CDMA is it likely different frequency. Not trying to be an ass. Just state the facts. Sorry.

@ksizzle9
We use different freq in europe :
HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
US for Droid X :
CDMA , EVDO rev. A
EVDO is only available in US...
Most of Europe uses GSM, which is not compatible with EVDO, so EVDO will NOT work overseas.
I just need to wait a european version of the droid X ... Seems like a dream ^^

Have you seen the Milestone XT720? I know it's gsm and it may be unlocked. It's a lot like the droid X.

I bought this phone in the US in T-Mobile, and I'm going to unlock it soon.
On the specs page it says
Technology GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
On Russian page it also says:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MГц
So the frequencies are the same.
Will I be able to use it?
if you have a provider which is using GSM and any of the frequencies that the phone supports then there should be no problem at all.
Ok, thanks, I'll try to see what frequenices my provider (Megafon, Russia) supports

I used my old Omnia (which has the same quad bands) in Russia on the MTS network. It worked great.
Great! Thank you
The phone will certainly work, but I doubt you'll be able to use 3G anywhere outside the US, because T-Mobile US uses non standard frequencies.
I'm not even sure there's 3G in my home town in Russia. We're using GSM.
I purchased an HTC Desire to use with my AT&T service. My Desire is GSM/WCDMA and not GSM/UMTS. Meaning, that my Desire can not run on anything but EDGE. I spoke with a rep at HTC and he let me know that there may be an APP to unlock the 3G service... Does anyone have any information on this?
Thank you kindly in advance...

isn't WCDMA = UMTS?
That's what I thought too, but the HTC rep, let me know that I can only unlock 3G with an App. That because I have an import and it's not currently available in the U.S. I would need to find this app and unlock my 3G service. The Desire wont pick up AT&T's 3G...

Yes........
I think it might be a frequency issue.
As far as I'm aware there are two models of Desire - A8181 and A8183.
In Australia, the model is the A8183 which provides WCDMA/UMTS at 850 and 2100 mhz. I think the A8181 operates at 900 and 2100 mhz.
If you imported from anywhere else other than Australia you'll most likely have a model A8181.
What frequency is AT&T 3g?
I do have an A8181. AT&T currently uses 850 and 1900 mhz...
Do you think there is a fix for this like the HTC rep mentioned?

AT&T uses 850/2100 like Telstra does in AU.
If you have the A8181 you are stuck with 900/2100. I think it's a hardware thing so an app probably wont help, not 100% sure about that though.

You bought the wrong phone ?(A8181)! As has been previously mentioned, you need an Australian Telstra Desire (A8183) to support AT&Ts 3G.
There is nothing that can be done about this because the hardware is different. You should sell your A8181 and buy an A8183.

Dave

Sorry to say , but I don't think so. the differences are in the hardware, not software.
You could always keep your device and change carrier? I presume someone in your area might use 2100 mhz??

Unfortunately not - the only other major GSM operator in the US is T-Mobile, and they use a split band of 1700/2100 and requires support for both to work.

Dave
Does anyone wanna trade an A8183 for my A8181????

@Hugo - good luck with your sale. The device is incredibly popular in Europe, so eBay might be your best friend for a buyer.
i will
i' happy to trade with yours i got htc 8183 for 10 days
im running different operator than telstra so i would like a free wwe rom
hi friends, i have a doubt......earlier i had a motorola E6 (rokr)(linux based phone), which could be changed from GPRS(1G)(out of box) to EDGE (2G) and triband frequencies converted to quadband using radiocomm software. i did that and enjoyed 2G on that phone.
i was just wondering, could something like that can be done on our 3G/HSPA/HSPDA HD2 to get 4G ?
The motorola probably already had 2g capable hardware and so enabling this would have always been possible, the HD2 does not have 4g capable hardware.

Is it like the HD2 or will It be 3G on AT&T?

I really like to know the same... if the DHD can get At&t 3g,,, I will get rid of my Vibrant in no time....
The DHD operates in these bands:
HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G (HSPA/WCDMA) will not work because USA uses 850MHz/1900MHz bands for 3G. GSM will work everywhere.
I got an HD2 t9193 destined for Australia which worked here.

USA doesn't use 850/1900 AT&T uses 850/1900.
T-Mobile is also in the USA, but they use the AWS 1900/2100 band for 3G.
And to answer th OP question, the European version of the DHD does not support any current 3G bands that any of the major US carriers use.
So what options for US users?

What would you need the DHD for? You've got the Evo.
(Now I'm expecting you to start listing the differences...)
No, I have an Aria after my t9193 hd2 died last week (was 3g here in US and Europe). I was waiting for the dhd so its a stop gap. Or so u thought. I'm on ATT so looks like, if I want 3g, I either keep this or get the Galaxy (but I want sense). Or move to Verizon (not an option) .
Any ideas anyone?

Aside from the DHD being an all-around better device, Sprint sucks. Their "4G" network is slower than my T-Mobile 3G. Not to mention I pay $60/month with T-Mobile and the cheapest Evo plan is $90/month.

If you want a high-end Android device you have the Captivate, and that's about it for AT&T. Unfortunately AT&T put all their eggs in one basket with the iPhone so their Android lineup suffers. You could always go to T-Mobile and get the G2
Does this mean that the phone will not work at all (e.g. cant make or receive calls or txts) or does it mean that you can't use data via 3G (just means you have to use wi-fi)?

It means no 3G data in the US. The phone still supports 850/900/1800/1900 for 2G networks so you'll be able to do calls, texts, MMS, and even data. It's just that you'll be on Edge instead of 3G.
PERHAPS THERE will be a Telstra version?

I wish but this time I am afraid our luck is a little short unlike last time for the HD2 . Let's just hope that HTC will bring out a much more powerful device sometimes in Q1 2011 for users with 3G (850/1900Mhz)
Question for the collective wisdom of the group:
I bought an unlocked T-Mobile HTC G2 off of ebay thinking it was the same as a regular Desire Z. Phone is great, but 3G does not work in my home country (Honduras). Is there anyway to change the data frequency on the phone?
Thanks in advance
AE

Someone told me that I need the NAM Desire Z (850mhz) to be able to use with my local network...Am i really stuck with Edge with my T-mobile G2?

Yes. The G2 and the DZ use different bands for data, so you will not be able to get 3G or 4G from it.

Unfortunatly yes, you are stuck if you keep the G2, best bet sell it an get a HTC A7275 Desire Z NAM, this model supports (850mhz). This is the only model Desire Z that supports this frequency. It has to ba a A7275 model. Bell Canada sell this model and some other online electrionc vendors.
There are AT LEAST THREE different variations on the VISION hardware, supporting different frequency sets. The AWS version debranded by tmobile, is capable of upload on 1700 (used in US and Canada) or 1900 (used in Europe) MHz, download on 2100.
For info, since this comes up a lot, I have updated the Wiki with the information about which radio bands are supported by which Vision model - http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Radio_Bands
As other have indicated, you are stuck on EDGE. The MHz compatibility is a function of the hardware, and therefore can't be changed. Always research the heck out of the device before buying anything that is unlocked or otherwise not from your carrier.
If your wireless provider uses "standard" north american frequencies like AT&T USA, Bell Mobility Canada, and Rogers Wireless Canada, you need the Desire Z p/n: 99HLW020. Phones that are p/n: 99HLW021 are T-Mobile USA only.

"Standard"? It would help if there was such a thing. In most of Europe and in Japan, they only use one network type and frequency (instead of mish-moshing GSM and CDMA and different frequencies). As long as your phone is SIM unlocked, you can use your device on any carrier. That's how it should be.

How do those 3 together make it standard? There are 3 providers using UMTS on GSM and PCS (which you've listed), there are more than 3 using AWS.... tmobile, globalive, mobilicity, and videotron running now... and more coming soon... as well, ALL of the providers you've mentioned OWN AWS spectrum, and at least ATT is apparently planning on using it.... (robelus just bought a bunch of it up to block out competition... the bastards.)
So seems to me that AWS is more "standard" than GSM or PCS spectrum.

Yeah, I don't know if calling it the standard for North American frequencies is completely right (though I believe in terms of numbers of users/towers instead of number of providers, it actually might be but I'd have to go research to be sure---most manufactures refer to their North American versions of phones as using these frequencies as well). I would say however, it is pretty much the standard for the Americas. Almost all of Central and South American use 850/1900 as well. AWS is limited to only the the US and Canada (I believe).
