Oops!! I am disappointed very much, if the below one is true!!!
i WAS planning to buy HTC HD2 this week end. But after seeing the below annoucement I am disappointed very much.
HD2 is not upgedable to WM7. Microsoft: “No Windows Phone 7 upgrade for Windows Mobile 6.x devices”
http://apcmag.com/microsoft-no-windows-phone-7-upgrade-for-windows-mobile-6x-devices.htm
Though I am not going for OS (Windows) and only impressed for HTC(HTC HD2). See, I will go for HTC HD2 even if it's not upgradble to WM7, but atleast i need the backward compatability. Whatever application developed for WM7 should atkeast support for WM 6.x. other wise what is the use?
I have some basic doubts.
1. If all the windows mobile phones right now in market is not upgradble to WM7.0, then what is the use of buying HTC HD2?.
2. Applications will be developed for WM7 and it won't be backward compatible. So application wise also for WM 6.x gradually it will be obsolete.
Seriously, now I am looking for other option: iPhone.
Instead of having a phone which will be OUT DATED soon, i think i have to go for iPhone.
Though I accept the fact that the technology will keep on moving and every phone has a START and END.
Above are my disappointment and frustration, though looking for HTC HD2
There are lots of other threads on this same topic.
Everybody please stop spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). WP7s won't be alive for almost a year and probably almost 2 years until it has the wealth of quality apps that WM6 has. WM6 isn't 'out-dated' just yet and won't be for a long long while.
Most of you will have upgraded to the next best phone in a year anyways!
I hope we dont get WM7 period, to piss everyone off.

lol.
But as ace07 said, is way to soon to fully know, and either way it wont be out for a while so I am not concerned. I probably wont get it until some of the release bugs are fixed. Unless it comes on a must have device...
WM7 looks bad anyway, if HD2 is dead ended, I'm likely to look at android etc.
at least it comes with multilingual in/outputs by default, which I can't get to work at all in WM6.5 (worked in WM6.0)
The trolls are out in anger again aren't they!
I don't think the trolls realise that for every 1 person that talks back to them, there's probably about another 10,000 that just smiles smugly and thinks "troll", then goes back to enjoying their HD2.
michealjohn, if you can think of 1 single reason why you should have an iPhone over the HD2 then you're right.
Closing as so many threads on this same topic!

Why o why?
The specs are good, so why can't we all get offically the wm7 upgrade?
I know there will be custom roms but no offence to the developpers, they are all ****ty. Every custom rom I had I need to hard reset my device every two weeks so that won't be a option for me anymore.
MICROSOFT PLEASE DON'T BE STUPID!!!!
Why does windows mobile 7 not on the HD2?

Specs are good, but hardware requirements are not met by the HD2, now what does that mean, well it means that HTC did not look ahead, and used the wrong button configuration on the phone, so it is outside the spec of what MS says is required for WP7.
So yes we are Officially screwed out of WP7 because of the buttons on our phones .....
I doubt MS is going to change their requirements for the very few existing WinMo phones that have the CPU and RAM to handle WP7.
The hard resetting you have to do every couple weeks may have more to do with WinMo 6.5.x than the fact that it's a custom ROM. I'm sure we'll get near-stock WP7 ROMs that will function much better than what we currently have. Don't lament before we even have anything on that front.
I don't think wp7 will even be a viable option for most of us anyways (at least the initial release). Very locked down, sounds a lot like the first iphone. I'm hoping they update quickly and open it up (at least every 2-3 months), but I wouldn't hold my breath.
That is why I decided to take the plunge with the hd2. Figured it would be a couple of years before I was ready to jump on wp7. (though that 1.5ghz snapdragon htc sounds interesting and apparently is coming to t-mobile...)

Ow is it? Cuz now I still work with my HTC Raph100 with those custom roms I talked about. I'm hoping to unbox my Leo begin this week.
So are the roms better now for the Leo?

im still trying to work out why anyone would WANT wp7 on their hd2. itd be like putting Windows 1.0 on an Alienware pc. im sure there will be custom roms if you wanna have a glorified Instinct, but just cause something is new doesnt mean its better. why would you want to cripple this powerhouse phone with that dumbed-down software? doyou actually WANT to be able to do less with it???

The reason I want to have It Is this:
I read that Windows Mobile 6.5 is based on all the old previous versions, based on CE blabla (I don't know It exactly anymore) so there Is alot of old junk that is not needed anymore.
The new Winmo 7 is totally new so therefore It should be allot faster then all the previous versions.
Please tell me If I'm wrong..

For me, tinkering is fun, but that is not the main function of my work device. I want it to work, and work well. If that means giving up a couple features, features which I can live without, then I'll play ball. WP7 has been built from the ground up with a very different goal than Windows Mobile, which had the original goal of bringing the PC to a PDA format. I don't need that, and the functionality that is associated with that goal gets in the way of usability for my purposes. If your use cases do not match up with what WP7 is capable of, so be it, but know that the vast majority of customers aren't tinkerers and tweakers.

"alot of old junk" in WM 6.5? Oh yes - like copy & paste, and proper multitasking? If you think that's junk, you'll love WP7.
iPhone OS v1 was rubbish. v4 finally has most of what you actually need and what WM has had for years. Same with Android - the first versions were severly lacking in many areas. Only now is it coming into it's own at v2.2.
Anyone should be able to see that since it's a completely new OS, WP7 will be equally as rubbish as the iPhone and Android offerings were at initial release.
yes, BUT WM still misses a lot of stuff such as gfx libs for better programs...
like ballmer says... they need to lure Developers Developers Developers somehow...
iPhone is #1 because of apps... WM is last only because of apps... and WM7 is taking sooo long because MS's management SUCKS... they seriously need to hire someone better to get thier mobile dept straightened... look at kin... what it could have been if only those devs were still part of wp7...

They put in Terry Myerson a bit more than a year ago, but thanks anyways for the un-researched comment. He's been spearheading the reset efforts in WP7. Some like him, some don't. I'll reserve and judgment until WP7 is launched and tested in the market.
This is a stupid and pointless thread.

Well, yes it is now, did not start out that way, but a discussion is one thing ...
But when people have convinced themselves of something , and just want to argue the point it is no longer a discussion ...
1.) HD2 Specs are great, but HTC did not adhere to What MS has released as specs for WP7, so HTC screwed us out of an Official WP7.
2.) MS specs for WP7 were released(but not to the public) before the HD2 was , so MS is not inclined or obligated to change their specs to fit the HD2
3.) We actually have 1 too many buttons on the HD2 but None of them are the almighty "Search" button, so again the HD2 is outside the spec so no official WP7.

Actually, the Euro version of the HD2 was released before the announcement of WP7. Still, I'm not sure if HTC was made aware of the requirements by the time they were already far along in the design of the HD2.

I had heard about the 3 button some time early last year, but you are right that may have been after the design and during the production phase of the HD2.
MS did not make an Official release of the specs till I think January of this year, I think that is when it was.
Either way , you can blame HTC, you can blame MS, but, it is true for any piece of technology, CPU's that keep changing sockets, Video Cards that keep changing standards, DVD/Blu-Ray standards the list goes, on ...
I mean providers are not going to change what they decide to to with regards to their specs and requirements just because people scream, I mean why can't I run Iphone OS on my HD2(not that I want to ), because it is not compatible, even though the HD2 out powers most Iphones, and just because Apple says NO.
I suggest, instead of getting all up in arms here, and bashing people for their views you contact MS and HTC and complain to them, not that it will get you anywhere, just as posting here is just gonna start a big discussion, but not fix it anyway.

Yes, sorry I meant more like management a while ago... 1 year ago is still much after iPhone released... they should have done something like WP7 from the beginning and if management wasn't an issue, I doubt we would see two different teams for mobile in the first place: Kin and WP7... I do agree however, management is seeming much better now...
EDIT: also, for hardware keys, all we're missing is the search button... since wp7 will have windows button go to the tiles screen which is also the home, we can map the home screen to search (Kind of implying home page aka bing/search)? If they wanted MS could have easily added official support, but i am sure HTC influenced them to do that... since that would mean HD3 sales for them... ahh if only i were rich :-/...

Now that WM7 has been released as of today - is there anyone out here that's going to try to get it to work with our beloved HD2's ???
The WM7 project was killed 2 years ago, so I doubt it was released today.

Good question i wouldnt mind trying it out but your too early i believe, i doubt we will see WP7 ports to the HD2 till maybe WP7 phones are released its not as simple as throwing on a rom i believe microsoft built from scratch with WP7 and so the ports to the HD2 if they happen will probably be much like the android builds currently test and fix type of things
I want my windows mobile 7 on my hd2
I WANT MY WINDOWS MOBILE 7 ON MY HD2
I WANT MY WINDOWS MOBILE 7 ON MY HD2

Come on guys, you can do it... PUULEEZZZ
I will donate for who develop a WM7 ROM for sure.
Okay people seriously, STOP REVIVEING THESE WP7 ROM THREADS WITH USELESS INFORMATION.
It will be made when its made... no reason to beg. Don't get your hopes up about wp7 on hd2 ... it may not even be able to use market or any of its cloud support if it does got ported, as the devs who have been working on it said that wp7 devices have a unique code that lets Microsoft's servers know its an authentic device. We may not be able to get around that on a wp7 port.
I don't see the big deal about wp7 anyways... I'd rather use winmo and android myself.

It gets real tiresome wading through thread after thread of doofuses asking the same DUMB questions over and over... and it's even worse when said doofuses asking said dumb questions can't even be bothered to get past their own ignorance about even the name of the product.

Sorry if this has been done before, unable to search(at work using IE 6.0)
However i'm not sure if Windows Phone 7 will come to the HD2, i'd love it to and i've heard its possible.
But there is one thing which makes me think it would never be done in the same way Android has, and that is Android is open source where as WP7 is closed source and therefore wouldn't it be illegal to port it?
If it can be done legally then I really can't wait to boot my HD2 into WP7 and Android as don't get me wrong, the devs will have no probs porting it if it can be done

Illegal
I am constantly putting custom roms on my HD2 with Windows Mobile versions that have not been released yet. I don't think that is less illegal than releasing Windows Phone 7.
An official release would be nice of course. Especially because I do not know if we can update WP7 if it ever gets ported to the HD2.
I have heard from several sources that in the development the HD2 has been used a test device and therefore the drivers and so should be available at HTC. The HD7 virtually is equal to the HD2 so a release should be very easy for HTC.
I still have hopes they will release it. Eventually the phone will be worn out and need to be replaced. If HTC has provided me with an update to WP7, my idea of HTC will be so positive that my next phone most probably would be an HTC as well.
If not, well then I hope that WM6.5 gets more and more stable and with cookie hometab 2.0 or SPB windows mobile shell 5.0 we still have a nice interface. I know that the new range of WP7 phones do not offer enough hardware advantages to justify an upgrade while I bought my HD2 for around 550 euro not even a year ago.
A reason why I still count on an official update is that HTC has not been doing much to update the sense experience so far, while on android it keeps getting better and more flexible.
A WP7 release would make up for that, if not, I feel a little bit deserted by HTC.
Also for Microsoft an update would be usefull, they would have an instant increase of marketshare. This is good for app devellopment, mouth to mouth advertising and eventually would help MS to anker their OS into the market.
This is a video from one of the main people who brought us android on our hd2s so i beleive it to be real.

Well.. If HTC were to release an OFFICIAL update of WinMo7 then people won't buy the HD7..Of course you can also say that if HTC were to update their (not too) old phones they will bring more customers..
I, personally, don't like WinMo7..
It looks too 'simple' for me.. and I don't really like the design.. but we'll have to wait for some reviews and more pics..
lets hope sombdy at HTC just happens to drop da drivers for WP7 on da hands of a couple dev... an goes on wit der life... nody knowin who left em behind
Well if it is illegal just be one of the first to download it ;o
1 - Legal or illegal, I know I don't give a rat's ass about legality.
2 - BE OPTIMISTIC, COTULLA IS JESUS OF CODING.
3 - I sure hope it will come to the HD2
Well I hope someone does port WP7 to the HD2, especially as I've looked at the specs for the HTC HD7 and apart from having build in 8/16gb expanded memory the specs are identical!!! I thought the whole point of WP7 and HTC denying any statement that they would port it back to the HD2 was that the CPU would be a dual core snapdragon (if I understood things right) but seams this is not the case and there is no physical hardware problem with the HD2 running it.
I would guess the thing that will stop it at the moment is getting a Kernel sorted that would boot WP7 just like is needed for Android ROMS to run or a Radio update.
Personally speaking I can't wait to give it a go, the only reason I still run WM6.5 is so I can properly access my work exchange email and hotmail at the same time (+3 other email accounts) and when i'm in the car WM6.5 is perfect for playing music and using sat nav without having to look at the screen (found android audio multi-tasking lacking) but love the android for the customisable scenes, apps, widgets and more importantly, app content (love robo wars and angry birds).
It would be actually better on the HD2 than the HD7; I really really miss having a phone button on WP7 (you have to go back to the home screen, tap the phone icon, then tap the keypad icon...) but guess what? The HD2 already has one! The future is now!
Wp7 seems to have forgotten that some people actually like their phone to also at the same time be a phone (of all things). To be easy to use as a phone. To let you quickly phone people. To not spend five minutes working out how to phone people whilst fumbling on the touch screen on a rainy day. To let you answer phone calls with a (real) button press that your fingers can quickly find whilst pulling it out of your pocket, and (what black magic is this I see) the HD2 even lets you press a button to hang up a call! It's pure genius.
I really like the way an HD2 is built - much more than other phones I've seen - so I'd love to see WP7 on it.
And just to get it off my chest one more time.... Why of why oh why (oh why....) Microsoft did you get rid of the phone button?
well here is an interesting read for you guys (my email responce from htc)...

Windows Mobile 7 is a giant step backwards in 3 key areas
1. No native tethering support. What this means is ooops no connection to the PC like you have now with WinMo 6.5.X
2. No 3rd party app multitasking. What this means is when you get a call and the OS moves away from the app, it gets closed. if the app developer was not smart enough to save the app state, you're screwed.
3. Copy and paste. (This is supposed to be resolved). What this means is you cannot copy urls or text out of something and paste it into another place

1. This won't last long, it will come unless carriers block it.
2. Depends on the 3rd party app. Microsoft has already relented for pandora (apparently). What makes you think the app devs aren't smart enough to develop their apps properly knowing the issue of save state?
3. I've heard this was already fixed (or will be in the first update).
1. MS has stated that they will leave tethering up to the carriers hence it's missing.
2. What makes you think developers are smart enough? I can point to the crapload of buggy software already out for [insert platform here] that does not work right.
3. Should have been in there from the start, there really is no excuse for this most simplistic feature of windows to be missing.
With reference to my enquiry to htc for an official android rom for the hd2.

And yet, microsoft denys us of having a windows phone 7 update. This shows how simple minded and selfish microsoft is.
Firstly, the 5 button issue. We can take that the power button just moved down to the front. And also the windows icon can be the camera and the home button could be the search button!
If microsoft does not provide us an update, why not let htc create android for the hd2? Who the hell wants to use winmo6.5? Its like, SO. LAST. CENTURY.
Winmo does not have flash 10, only flash lite, and thats not good enough for us to enjoy full flash experience on the winmo6.5 browser. Skyfire and opera has already stopped support for winmo6.5 .
Nice, I see a very "nokia's symbian" like phone right in front of me...

Let me be honest: I don´t see any sense in a thread like this.
If you hate Microsoft or HTC, or even both, why do you buy a product from them?
As of today, it is standard that you cannot officially change the OS on your smartphone, but developers and chefs like here at xda make this possible for you. So, where´s the problem?
I fully agree with you that it would have been a great step by HTC to officially offer Android or WP7 for HD2 - now that would have been an amazing (and probably strategically wise) decision of HTC. But, they don´t make such a thing happen. I don´t blame them for that.
The future will show if HTC can continue a healthy growth, but I think this will not really depend on some "geeks" like us. Eighty per cent of the users don´t care about such things. All they want is an everyday use device; too many changes are not really what the masses want.
Title change. People may get misleaded...

Hey bro, we were promised windows phone 7 remember?
Without official, nothings really complete, cause htc has the fully working drivers that the devs all want their hands on...
Fully functional if all the kernels and stuff were released to devs from htc.
I think most hd2 users want an upgrade but dont bother to complain.
Imagine if we had just one stock rom from htc... All cameras/camcorders will work. No wifi broken or bluetooth etc.
What more, others are making the switch to sensation or other preloaded android.
*I would if i could too

We were never "promised" any such thing. We simply had a Microsoft spokesmen saying something like "It will be looked into" or maybe somebody saying unofficially "yeah it will happen" which is in no way any sort of official stance on the subject.

I have Windows XP, why didn't I get a free upgrade to Windows 7. The new version of my car has parking sensors as standard, can I ask for them to retro fit it to my car for free?
We are entitled to updates not upgrades. I could have went from 1.48 to 1.72 to 3.14 ROM - these are updates to both WinMo and Sense.
The only thing that was stupid for microsoft was that they didn't officially or even unofficially allow the HD2 to be upgraded, not to please HD2 users but just to boost the WP7 Market numbers - these increased numbers would have persuaded more Marketplace developers.
WinMo may well be 'so last century' but it does well what I need it to do. The only weakness is development of apps. There is apps you can get for the iphone that you cannot get on the Android and visa versa, so are they so last century. Microsoft were way behind in developing (copying) the iphone marketplace and now they have went the full way by copying the iphone (WP7).
There is not a website that I have come accross that I cannot view the contents. Having XP I don't get to install IE9 and now IE10. Oh deary me, what can I do?
I've lost count of manufacturer's specific operating systems that just died. They hoped that it would lead to a vast app market (and so did the folks that bought these phones), only to find sod all.

I agree to what you say.
According to me what the OP is trying to convey to the people is that Microsoft and HTC both neglected the potential of a device which was both in terms of hardware and software potentially capable of running two operating systems being Android and Windows Phone 7.
Now looking at Microsoft's customer support. In the past in terms of OS upgradability MS was generous enough to offer people free upgrades.
Example: People who bought the laptops two months before Windows 7 was released were offered free upgrades.
Now that's just an example but we can clearly relate this to as to why MS didn't do the same with the HD2. Now Why ?? I don't have an answer to that and the only man according to me who can answer that is http://twitter.com/#!/joebelfiore perhaps you can contact him and ask him personally.
Now coming to HTC.
Clearly the people at HTC know by now that yes HD2 is capable of running Android super smoothly without any problems.
Now the question is, once HTC HD2 was released as a flagship Windows Mobile device back then even HTC knew that HD2 is the best windows mobile phone in the market... So why will they change the license agreement with Microsoft and release Android ?? I am not a HTC official but the answer to this wont be in our favor for sure.
Also HD2 was the device which provided the genesis of HTC Sense. And I dont say this but Drew Bamford the product engineer at HTC does.
His full talk can be found here: http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/23/the-engadget-show-003-drew-bamford-joystiqs-chris-grant-ad/
So in short...its a million dollar industry guys...a multinational company..these kind of decisions just don't take place out of the blue moon.
However I will be really happy if HTC releases an official Android Rom.
(Which seems kind of challenging specially with the unethical change of the Windows Logo to become the Menu in Android )
http://www.dkszone.net/htc-working-on-official-android-2.3-update-for-htc-hd2
also, who cares about "official" roms anymore!? the first thing i did when i got my hd2 is to flash an energy (winmo 6.5) rom on it!
owing to the fact what the hd2 hardware is capable of it is pure nonsense htc and microsoft cannot release wp7 for hd2. hardware button mapping can be distributed easily with the only limitation being a soft key for camera operation.
though we were never promised such an update, my view still holds. they can but they wont. htc has already made hd7 and microsoft wp7 on it. they wana sell it. they want money.
thing is they cant get a profit if they were to release an update. and the other thing is even though some of us are even ready to buy a wp7 OS update to hd2 if they release...soon the OS update wud release asap to the masses (think of one such site in particular) and we wud be flashing for free.
so ultimately its the profit they are after. so hd2 is a done deal and no more.
and since are at it. here is a slogan
HTC (quietly ignorant)
hehe
i dropped $ on the HD2 mere months before the HD7 release because the tmo sales guy at the ritzy tmo store 'claimed' very intently that 'oh for SURE htc & tmo love me enough to do the right thing' by upgrading my hd2 to the hd7 system.
sucker for the latest tech candy.........me.
it was my first large smartphone purchase from a featureless clamshell w/no color display.
it showed.
it won't happen again.
the cell phone manufacturers and providers are going to find that in a few short years that peeps like me are a thing of the past, and have to become transparent.
or find new ways to trick us.
gig tiers is 1 way...
imagine if your p.c. was treated the same as the smartphones are...
lol, i give it 5 years and voila! home internet split into 6 overpriced underpowered gig tiers...
i miss the interwebs of '95...heck BBS of '87 was cool.
btw i agree with the op.
entirely.

So you got a free upgrade from Win95 to Win98 to Win2000 to WinXP to Win Vista to Win7?
How many had to replace their perfectly working printer because it would not work with a new operating system because the manufacturer didn't update the drivers?
I have had phones that were WinMo5 with no official upgrade to WinMo6 or 6.5 and WinMo6 with no upgrade to WinMo6.5. I did get those upgrades thanks to the extremely clever chefs on here.
As I have said before that I think that microsoft were stupid not the allow an upgrade to WP7. Not for pleasing existing customers, but to get more users to their brand new Apps Market and also keep them when they went for a new phone.
