Dumming down my G1 - G1 General

Hi everyone
I've been babying this idea for a while now. My mother is completely retarded when it comes to electronics and she can barely operate her clam-shell Nokia so I'm thinking of dumming down my spare G1 to a point where she can use it. I know it may sound stupid to some but G1 has 1 main advantage over dumb phones and that is that it has touch screen. My mom wouldn't have highlight anything to select, she can just touch what she sees.
I am looking for some ideas and/or advice, I don't expect any help, just want to see what people think about this. Here's what I plan on doing:
Downgrade to donut or better yet, cupcake.
Remove All apps.
Remove bluetooth, data and wifi modules (possible? how to?)
Install ADW launcher and downgrade it to 1 homescreen.
Place shortcuts to most basic functions (SMS, Dialer, Camera, Pictures Settings, etc) on that 1 screen
Metamorph drawer handle to be transparent so she doesn't go in there.
Anything else?
With all that stuff removed, the phone should be extra fast and battery should last pretty long (I would guess over 2 days)
What do you all think?

Don't forget to explain to her what all of the buttons do. And if you can, turn off the camera button in case she accidentally presses it.

Good points.. although I think that G1's buttons are self explanatory and she actually uses camera once in a while.

Man, for me to say this is like needles in my eyes, but i realized the best phone to get for ppl like that(my mom is one, and she has the phone now) is actual the iphone, that phone was really made for slow, or non technology ppl, i should here how to surf the net make a call and check her email, and she was quick to pick up on there cause all buttons right there and in obvious place...
the iphone is really made for the slow simple people, thats why so many like it
her previous phone was the simple simple dial and call phone nothing fancy it was like those prepaid phones for like 30 bucks, and she could handle it cause buttons where small and any other reason to complain about.. for here there no real buttons to only 3 buttons home and 2 volume buttons everything else was jus there couldnt miss the big GREEN call sign or the big RED end send

Ha-ha, that's funny. I would get one for my mother but iPhone still has too much stuff in it and no way to mod it. On the other hand, I have 2 spare G1s that I can play with until they are easier to use then your average dumb phone lol
Keem em coming guys (and gals)

I'd unroot to 1.0 and leave it there, lol.

Yea, iPhones are actually a great stepping stone into the smartphone world for people who aren't very tech savvy. I'm pretty sure anyone could learn to use one fully after a while of playing with it. Of course, this boils down to your service provider.

Yes and no. My folks don't need/want smart phone and I don't feel like paying another $60 for data plans for them. The idea of "poof and hide" is great though... advanced launcher does the same thing as far as I know but I wouldn't even want them to know that there's drawer, only the shortcuts on main screen.

lol might aswell just a get a clone phone with all functions broken

once agian the beauty of that, dont need a data plan for the iphone, ad again my mom jus uses it as phone she has no data on the phone, and the plus side of it there is no drawer on the iphone only icons, and 3 main buttons total,
i dont like the iphone at all, but for a starter and simple phone that any dunce can use it is the best pphone to get

You care to elaborate on that? Does iPhone not do background data at all? That might be an option... those 1st gen iphones are pretty cheap nowadays.

No, she owns a 3g and doesnt do background.. it doesnt even have background data... unless you enable push notification, not only that my buddy owns a 3gs and he has no data, an using tmobile on it.. iphone doesnt really need data, it can use wifi.. but yea there lot ppl that dont have data, and can still use iphone.. just food for thought

Recording Calls?

I tried Resco Recorder, simply put, does not work.
I tried Vito Audio Notes, its also not working.
Any news on this? I am desperately in need of this to record argue converstation with gf because she likes to turn things around.
No possibility of recording calls on HTC devices simply because of legal issues they wanted to restrict it by making the drivers route the calls not through the OS and that's the main reason for not able to have an auto-answering machine software also.
I love Symbian for this reason alone.
Regards,
Carty..
Get a new g/f dude but if you really think a recorder will solve the problem,it may be time to get a new you...lol. just kidding dude and good luck
I loved being able to record convos on my Treo 755p. I would be going back to it but I like GPS on the mogul too much.
Sounds like you need a saner girlfriend and not spy software
I need this for everytime sprint says "Sure are our service is the best".

Don’t worry as soon as we understand any female SHE WILL MORPH AGAIN !!
4th and 20 from your own 5........PUNT!!!
I don't think it is a legal issue as someone posted. Many states allow you to record calls as long as at least 1 member of the party is aware, some states require more than 1.
I know my last PPCPE the wizard allowed me to record calls. Recording calls is not only for spying. I used mine alot when someone was giving me a phone number and I didn't want to go through the whole crap of opening the notepad, selecting free text etc.
It just seems the Mogul overall has been a dissapointment with me. I was HTC's biggest fan when the produced the first XDA for T-Mo with a 3.5" screen
RANT...
Talking about 3.5" screens what happened to them. I've literally stopped using all office mobile apps ever since they shrunk the screen down to 2.4 Excel Mobile is a pain. Pwoerpoint is manageable and Word...Well word mobil is only realistic with a device with a keyboard. I loved using transcriber but there is so little room to write on the 2.4" screen.
Are there any rumours of any 3.5" PPCPE in the works?

I think all the 3.5's are at the end of ropes and in the water as they make great boat anchors LOL. these phones are big enough but if they could keep em small like this then that would be cool.

The only reason yu think the 3.5" were big is because you've become accustomed to the 2.4".
After the death of the handheld PC in the late '90's and bisth of the PPC. People couldn't belive that PPC's could be as small with their 4" screens. Then the 3.5" came and we were like wow, they shrunk it even more.
I personally think the reason HTC ditched the 3.5" was because PPC's had been regarded as business computers and in order to gain or expand their market niche they brought them down to the siz of cell phones.
Apple has brought the 'BIG' screen back with the iPhone. Since they seem to set fashion trends I'm hopefull.

GrandCentral
One way is to use GrandCentral. You press 4 during the call. May not work well for an angry gf though because it announces that it is being recorded. You'll also have a new phone number. I have my grandcentral line forwarded to my mogul. Lots of features. I know this probably won't work for you but it is the only think I know of for recording that works well.
http://www.grandcentral.com
Thanks for all the "trying" to help guys. I really need this because gf keep changing her mind and story. I need something to show her that.."this is what you said 5 mins ago".....I am going nuts with this. And you know that girls also like to turn story around and make it as if it is your fault. Well need to record those too to study the psychology behind it.
I really like my mogul (had it about 2 weeks now) but the fact of the matter is I can barely read the screen! I put it on largest text size, and that works for some things, but not for many others. Everyone is not 21 years old! Time for designers to realize that.

50 dollars to the person who can make this

I'm sick of these snooping women coming up with excuses to need to make a call or use my phone for the web... and then I flat out catch them snooping through my stuff like face book, sms, phone call history, browser history...
I want a lock screen that has 2 icons present... one to allow someone to simply make a call without access to any other features or history, and one to generally use the internet, without access to any other features or history.
I guess even allow them to start a seperate SMS app so that they can have zero excuse for needing full features.
I feel like coming up with an excuse to need a bag and then wandering off with their purses and snooping through that.
Evil women.
i'd chip in some too. but expand the feature so you can lock down individual applications. e.g. would be nice to lock down (personal) texts and email if lending to someone to make calls or surf the net.

I'm all for that too... with a lock screen and only the basic features provided from there, everything would be locked down.
The emergency dialer modified to be able to make any calls would be nice... although I swear that when I did call 911 from it earlier this week, that afterwords my phone was unlocked.
Guest Dialer, Guest Browser, Guest Text would be GLORIOUS !!

Now, if you ask me and I say yes, well, that's on me then. But if you're straight snoopin', **** it. You're ****ing SNOOPING! You can't get mad at me when you find what you're looking for.

Would this be an app that YOU would start and then hand your phone to her, or would it be a home replacement or separate ROM? Would you want the ability to use some sort of password to exit, or what more do you envision?

if no good answer was given... you bet your ass I'd knock them the f**k out
Tiger, when did you get out of sex rehab?
I've got an app for that. It's called "Tell her to get her own phone!" and it's not in the market.
Seriously, my wife has her own phone and we stay out of each other's bidniss.
I can relate though because I used to have a girlfriend that liked to go through my wallet while I was in the shower. We no longer speak to each other.

I could easily be off on this.. but I believe he is looking for strictly a lock screen replacement. It would be passive, in that there is no action required to run it, only when waking the phone up the options he requested would be present.

I like the idea cause this could apply to more than just some chick looking through your phone. Maybe I want my child to be able to use my phone without going through and accidentally deleting or screwing up settings. Or maybe I have explicit pics from my GF that I dont want my buddy seeing if he is screwing with my phone. I know that there are ways of hiding pics but I tried the .nomedia thing once and it deleted my pics somehow.

Finally got rid of my HD2! yay!

The Worst phone I have ever owned save yourself the trouble of buying one.
The pros - Camera, video, and video playback
The cons = Everything else
its hard to even justify it as a smart phone, maybe if I was not on a forced data plan I would think differently, if sold as a dumbphone. Just not enough apps to do anything with , and it takes about 60 tweaks to make it decent
I think the only thing saving it is the bing turn by turn released today, otherwise dont waste your time on this! Get a used android device, or the new sprint evo instead
Winmo 6.5 is dead, the market proves it.
And yes you can scour the net for apps but you wont find many that are any good, over all the phone sucks
Good for you. Good luck.
Thank you for your input on this matter.

It's been a fun ride...

It's been fun, but I'm saying good-bye to my HD2.
The lag and crashing issues aren't THAT bad (excluding the texting program) but it's just inconvenient. A phone shouldn't have any of these issues, right?? And its nice that you can try different ROMs to find better performance but you shouldn't have to search for an alternative such as that after receiving your $450 brand new phone (I regret paying the full retail price so bad. I shouldn't have bought into the hype).
And for those of you claiming to have ZERO problems with your stock TMOUS HD2's running default ROMs, I question what your definitions of "problem" and "inconvenience" are, along with your perception of lag and ability to notice it. But if our perception to lag and detail is the same and you actually don't have any problems then you are very lucky.
Things I love: Browsing, Sense minus texting, Screen, Office Mobile, Camera
Things I hate: Texting, crashes, drop of 3G (probably more of T-Mobile's fault), lack of Apps compared to the droid and apple platforms.
To be honest, if I didn't text so much, I'd probably keep the phone.
Once again, it's been fun and this forum has been VERY helpful in my quest to fix the phone. Everyone is nice and overall very well informed. Thanks!
-Alex
PS, if anyone has some secret solution to this problem(s) other than trying the latest 2.13 ROM from T-mobile (which I have already tried), I'd be willing to keep the phone!

have you updated to the latest rom? texting has greatly improved IMHO. that was also my major concern with this phone prior to the update.
I agree with you to a certain extent, Alex. But I am more of a tinkerer to find solutions to the problems. If there weren't ANY problems with the phone, I would get rid of it!!!!
As far as texting... have you tried Swype? I came from a hardware-keyboard phone myself, and hated trying to text with the onscreen keyboard. But after getting used to Swype, I can say that I am MUCH happier.
With all that said... I'll give you $100 for your phone!!!!
I'll go to 105.
Alex,
If you bought a car, and a few months later the manufacturer announces they have a modification they can do to the car that will address certain issues, including one that you're experiencing (let's assume something other than critical safety issues)....do you return the car, or let them apply the modification?
It's the same idea with the new tmo ROM...it's an official update that you should try, especially with your SMS issues. No product is perfect out of the gate, and an official update like this is the only real way for them to try to fix issues from the factory. If you like the phone other than those reasons you listed, it seems silly to walk away from it already without even giving that a try.
Sorry that I didn't make it clear but I'm running the 2.13 right now. Texting is a little better but still laggy. And I should probably give swype a try before writing it off. We will see. Thanks guys

Alex, what phone are you gonna switch to?
Software Vs. Hardware
I really don't have any major problems with anything on the stock rom. No lags or nothing. That being said, if I experienced any issues my first response would be to find out if its hardware or software related.
In my mind, you can solve every single software related issues and I really love the HD2 hardware so there is no way I will ever return mine just because I face some software issues. And this is the great thing about WM, you can actually tweak it to function the way you want.
I must say that this is not the phone for someone who wants it work out of the box. I mean it works but you really need to know what you are doing. Regarding the apps, WM has far more apps then any mobile os out there, you cannot just compare the marketplace apps. Its WM, you have to know what you are getting into before you buy a phone.

Sorry that I didn't make it clear but I'm running the 2.13 right now. Texting is a little better but still laggy. And I should probably give swype a try before writing it off. We will see. Thanks guys

Ahhh gotcha, understood now, sorry.
Yes I would definitely give swype a try, once you use it, it's a whole different touch-typing experience.
The only other thing I'd ask is how often you clear out text messages on your phone? I think that 99% of the SMS freezing is due to too many text messages in the client at once. I clean mine out once a day at least, more if I'm texting a lot that day. I simply run a quick myphone backup to save them off-phone, and then I wipe out any threads I'm not currently conversing in (including clearing the deleted items folder). I never have any SMS freezing, even on the original (2.10) tmo ROM I'm still running.

I'm gonna just go with something simple and cheap like a Blackberry 8900 or 8520. I also need the money because something came up =/

Yeah, I know there's a lot of tweaking involved. I guess I just belong to the group of people that just want their phone to operate nearly perfectly fresh out of the box. I guess I really didn't know what I was getting myself into. I should have looked further into WM.

I'm testing out swype. I don't like it for the moment but I think its just because I'm not used to it. Gonna keep messing with it. As for clearing messages, I try not to let mine exceed 50. I wish I never had SMS freezing. I had less freezing on Kumar's classic 1.6 though
your hd2

let me know if you decide you want to get rid of your phone. I would seriously consider buying it if your price isn't to far fetched.

Apps that are compatible with this phone's resolution? Apps that compare to the UI of other platforms? Games that are similar to one on the other platforms?
Until you can show me this, I will still consider WM phones to be a NON-app instensive platform. Yes, they have all the apps you could need to do anything with, but they don't have all the apps you WANT.

pm me with a price and i will let you know if i can afford it.
i want to get rid of my phone too, evo 4g is out and it puts this phone to shame.. the laggy texting ect..swype wont even help u.. and u can get swype for a lot of phones anyway.
I have to agree with you 100%, I am coming of of a Nokia E51 which for a three year old phone has more basic, logical features which I though every phone would have.
The sms lagg is horrible and I experience all the time, or the fact that we cant keep the hom page looking the way it does and turn off the active weather. It lags the crap out of th phone if u just go to move screens or find something and its showing you clouds for 19 seconds scrolling by..
you cannot uninstal the useless applications that came with it without whiping the entire phone.
The new update is fine and dandy, but It clears the whole phone, so eveyr thign I have installed and set i have to redo just to get an upgrade, totaly idiotic in my mind. If its a OS update, then it should only effect the OS backround files not reset the total system.
Backing up contact. Sims only store 250 contact. I have over 300 so I have many on my phone it self, to copy the entire phone book to memory card, i have to do it one by one. Yes I know I can instal an app for it, but should I really have to? thats should be a basic app. Syncing with your computer, requires you to have email set up in outlook, I dont use out look, so I have to go through all that troube just to get that done.
In my house, my nokia has full signal at all times, with this new bad boy phone i barly get one bar if I am lucky.
Just simple little things which should be an automacit features on phones are missing here. I dont get the thinking behind that.
To the person who did the car analogy. Would you buy a expensive car if you had to install the breaks you self after purchase.. Oh you want a rear veiw mirror? here is a mirror, and some glue go have fun? no you would not, you would expect all functions to be there.
The phone doesnt even allow you to control how you view your contacts for crying out loud, I had to D/L an app to set if i want to view first name/ last name, vs the default last name first name. That is just bad.
Out side of a big shiny screen that eats ur batery life in one day and the camera.. nothing special.
just my two cents
rysky007, I agree with you for the most part
Would you buy a car knowing that it does not come with certain features or does not perform the way you want it to? Or do you just buy any car expecting all of them to come with features just because a car of another brand had them? There is a reason why it's better to lease a BMW than buying it.
It seems like you're the average joe that bought into the hype not knowing what Windows Mobile is.
Don't come crying just because the phone was not what you expected it to be. Do your homework next time before making a purchase.

A better analogy is you are buying a stock BMW and expecting it to drive like a F1 race car. Fact is, you have to add certain available add-ons to make it into a M5-ish car with the type of race tires you want and the suspension your driving habits need.

A piece of hardware that was only removed because TMO didn't want it on their network is hardly a reason for someone to get an iphone. Samsung covered up the camera hole with some paint and left the mounting brackets in place. This is simply putting your phone back to the way the manufacturer intended it to be.
If people want to make video calls or take myspace pics (are they still called that even though pretty much no one uses myspace anymore?), then let them. We've got three Vibrants in the house & for $20-25 each, we can get a FFC, so I'll probably be doing this mod as well, even if I never actually use it. You'll still have something unique that 99% of the other phones out there will not have.
For the people that don't want apps sharing their GPS location without their consent (even though they gave it when they installed the app), that's a reason to go to iphone. For people that just want the phone "experience" to be magical out of the box, that's a reason to get an iphone (the rest of us LIKE that Google made it so pretty much everything is customizable).

I live in Tampa and we can get to a deal. You know that the only sell 3 at the time $17 each. Send me an email if still interested.

Sell your vibrant and get the international galaxy s and then unlock it and root it
Another option which I plan on doing when I get the loot, is to pick up an iPod Touch 4G and wifi tether it to my Vibrant. Plus this way il have the best of both worlds. Android Market and iOS Market.

Yeah, too bad Samsung didn't redesign the board to fix that. The camera was removed because T-Mobile didn't think it was necessary (and I agree), and to keep costs down.
If you REALLY want the device to be "how the manufacturer intended it to be", stop rooting, flashing roms, hacking it, and do a factory reset to JFD firmware and leave it alone.
Otherwise, you're just a hypocrit.
BTW, I truly believe that an FFC is a completely useless gimmick, and nothing more than a check on the box and something for people to ***** about it not being there. Nobody thought they wanted one till it wasn't there.

Okay you wrote this because? Nothing is perfect outta the box. You get a laptop and instantly get firefox or chrome, you order food at a resturant and add salt. Who said we hated our phones cause we mod them? I like the vibrant, I also like video chat, so if I can have both why not? No one is telling you to do it, you just keep running sammy's knock off ios touch wiz and leave the customization for people who understand what android is about. Better yet get a nice feature phone so I dont have to skim past your narrow minded crap. A hypocrit posts in xda about not modding a phone. Shove off troll. Help or leave.
Edit the ffc is built onto the i9000 cam prob costs an extra $5 tops in bulk, who here would not have paid a lincoln more for there phone?
Tmo removed it so the mytouch line would be the first to get it.
Sent from the best phone from TMO... Vibrant
OK, yes, maybe I'm trolling a little bit, but seriously, you people didn't even know you wanted this stupid gimmick till it wasn't there.
I wrote my last post because the guy said that putting in an FFC is "returning the device to the way the manufacturer intended". Well, the manufacturer intended you to use it with the unrooted stock UVJFD rom. Anything else (all the community roms, leaked roms, rooting, flashed GPS files from leaked roms, "lag fixes", etc) isn't the "way the manufacturer intended". Seems a bit hypocritical to me.
PS: I never said anybody hated their phone. Don't put text onto my keyboard that I never typed. For the record, I'm running LP+ on JI6 with a custom-modded Framework-res.apk and "/data/data to NAND" hack. So don't tell me I don't know anything about modding a phone.
Duly noted sir. I will hush. Lol

Yeah, except for the whole lack of AWS bands, so you would get a ffc and no 3G whatsoever.

I live in the bay area and am willing to do this for you for $638.12
