[Q] Atom Life Power Question - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

Hi,
i've got an O2 Atom Life (could also be known as O2 XDA or O2 Comet) and it is a really good quality pocket pc, the only catch is that the battery dies quickly. I own an XP-02 (original battery that came with the phone) and an XP-09 (which is slightly bigger and lasts a bit longer) however they both die fairly quickly. I have left the CPU power to AUTO and set the backlight to 3, the battery can last a good day and a half on standby and if it's not used much, however the whole battery can deplete in 35 minutes while using the 3G/HSDPA network or playing games.
What i am looking for is a way or a setting to keep the battery stronger, i don't want to lower the cpu power because it will lag and i don't want to turn off 3G coverage because i like to use internet.
P.S could it be my charger? :S

In my opinion, i really think that it is the internet usage that is eating up the battery.. xD

Crappy battery life on ATT 8525

I have a slight beef about my 8525. Sure, it's a great phone with a lot of features, but that only goes so far when the battery life is terrible. I came from a RAZR so maybe I am expecting too much, but I can start the day with 70% battery life and take a couple pictures and browse the Internet for a few minutes (under 10) and end up with 40% battery life by the end of the day. I'm not keeping Bluetooth, WiFi or any Cingular connection open and I am leaving the phone in standby. It seems like anytime I do anything, the battery life goes down 10%. The only software I have installed is Google Maps mobile. Is this normal or am I expection too much out of this thing?
I have done the registry edits for better battery life and conditioned the battery properly when I got it. Will a different radio version help (I currently have 1.40.30.00 on WM5) or WM6 help?
I once placed a 45 minute call and the battery life went down 20% just by doing that.
Am I being too picky?

I've seen people say that some radio's gulp power like crazy, so u cud experiment with different radio's.
I'm on 1.47 rite now and I talk a lot of my phone, use google maps, browse the web, and I charge my phone once every 2 days or so. So its pretty good, i think for the amount of functions the phone has.
I just did a search for battery just in this forum, and in the title of the thread and found a lot of similar complaints so I don't feel so bad now. I also did the registry edit that allows the BAND tab to show under the PHONE settings so I can manually lock my phone to EDGE most of the time and select UMTS only when I prefer the additional speed. One would logically conclude that locking the band would help battery life. We shall see
Radio 1.40.30.00 seems to be a radio version most people are content with so I am stick with it for the time being.
Battery Life
I had an 8125 for almost a year and it was usually good for a day or so.
I recently dropped the 8125 into a cup of water... Amazingly it was not submersible. So now I have the 8525 here in Los Angeles.
The battery life is pretty pathetic. If I unplug the phone in the morning (around 10am) and just carry it around with me without even talking by 2am the phone is letting me know the battery is low.
If I talk on the phone (under an hour) then the phone is dead by 11pm
I use Google Maps for the traffic, and I also have multiple exchange email accounts which check about every 10 minutes.
On days when I actually use the phone and google maps, if I unplug at 10am the phone is dead by 6pm.
At the moment I am running Schnaps 3.60a.

*All* PocketPC phones will have battery life about as long as yours has.
The problem here is merely that you are trying to compare its battery life to a normal cell phone. For the past 4-5 years, the battery life on Windows PocketPC phones has been about the same.
If you want to compare your PocketPC to another device with regard to battery life, you have to compare it to a laptop and not a cell phone.
Welcome to the future.
I do realize that all of the advanced features will use more juice. I use a HP iPAQ and a Dell Axim at work which both use WM5 and those only get around 4-5 hours of life before they are dead.
It just seems that battery technology is lagging behind the electronic gadgets that use them.
I almost hate leaving the house with the phone being less that fully charged in case I really need it somewhere I am not around a place it can be charged. Suppose a car charger would be in order.
Yes! Crappy Battery Life on the 8525
Yes. I came from an 8125 (ActiveSync on 25/7) and was able to use my phone for 1.5 days. With the 8525, I am lucky to get 6-8 hours. Big bummer!
I locked my 8525 into the Edge network and I believe that my battery life has increased marginally. Of course, this will not work for some people because they need the faster 3G network, but if you would rather have longer battery life, I say give this trick a try. It is really nice if you live in a fringe area where your phone bounces from Edge to 3G and back again frequently.

Sorry but you are totaly wrong.
I had a TyTN for 3 monthes. I hardly had more than 24h in standby (no phone, wifi & Co). Phone was only in GSM mode, no UMTS. Tryed a lot of rom/radios.
I sold it, cause this was really too ridiculous.
Now I own a HTC Touch. With same usage and applications installed, I charge my phone only every 4 to 5 days.
12h in standby = only 10% less for battery.
This added to form factor made me very happy, no way I come back to hermes or even kaiser ...

Best Way to Preserve Battery Life?

As you all know the o2/MWg Atom Life has an extremely short battery life with the original battery and i'm curious as to what you guys would recommend to preserve the battery life on the Atom Life. Heres a list of what i've done so far if you want to make the most of your battery life:
1. Change the battery to the XP-02 instead of the standard 1530mAh battery which comes standard.
2. Change the CPU Profile to 'Best Power' (Settings>System>CPU Profile)
3. Flash the ROM with one of MedKid's WM6.1 ROMs (advanced..sorta)
4. Reduce the intensity of the Backlight (Settings>System>Backlight)
Any others?
GSM - 3G
I haved tried all the methods as recommended can help but to a very limited extent indeed. I found out the best tip from MWG O2 website: if you don't need to use 3G band switch, change it to GSM, (go to Settings - Connections - Band Switch). the default value is Auto.
After that, the battery life of my Atom life increases significantly from less than a day to more than 2 days!

I'm using the XP-09 at the moment until my XP-02 comes in and the only problems i've had are an extremely low battery life and occasionally the battery life will hit 0% after a full recharge with a third party charger i bought.... and dont use anymore.
PS: I'm gonna try the band switching thing, lets hope it helps! XD
My phone came with a XP-02 in India. I complain about low battery life. Can anyone post the standby time of both batteries?

My O2 Atom Life phone came with XP-09 in a pretty-pack box from company in INDIA.
The battery lasts around 2 days without any problem with talktime aroung 1 hours in two days. Standby time is more than 2 days for sure with no calls made.
If you watch videos or audio or FM Radio, it lasts around a day or even less if too longer the video is watched.
Just changed to Band Switching to GSM and lets see how much difference in battery life I get, will post later.
Mine came with XP-02. And it lasts for max 1.5 days without making much phone calls. Anyways would try with XP-09 now.
my atom life use cpu profile normaly. max 6-7days(24hour) standby no call,no sms.. only received sms. hmm..
cpu profile?
hi hendranata, do you mind sharing this cpu profile? i'm using a wm6 cooked rom on my atom(not atom life/flame)and i saw a cpu profiler in the ext rom. i'm not sure if this the same but nothing happens if i run it i've read in so many threads and forums that the default atom battery is major complain of everybody, this might improve it, the batterry performance i mean. tia.

i don't know why. but i use call only 1 hour spend 30%
I've had my mwg atom life a week and it came with 1530mAh XP-09. So far, I'm very disappointed with battery life (1 day at best) and I'm looking into getting a replacement battery. Is it possible that I have a faulty battery or is this typical performance?
I've seen various sorts on ebay ranging from XP-02 1500mAh (which is presumably going to be marginally worse than my XP-09) to a 2400mAh which seems to be thicker and comes with a new cover to accomodate it - but then it's not going to fit in my case. I haven't seen a 3000mAh as mentioned in this forum. Do the replacement 1500 ish ones perform better? Obviously they shouldn't but some people's comments here seem to indicate that maybe they do...
Which batteries are other people using and are they standard size?

hm.. u use atom life for what? call? sms? gaming? internet?
a little of bit of everything really. I realise that if I'm using a lot of bluetooth, wlan or watching videos etc then battery life is going to be short but I'd say a day maz just on standby with nothing more than a couple of calls and texts ie light normal usage. I;m getting a bit fed up with it tbh. Today it's refusing to make calls for some reason...

i personally think that ther's nothing wrong with ur battery.
o2 atom life is reknowned for their battery issue.
by following the few instructions given in the 1st post, you can slightly optimize your battery life. but dont have high hopes.
a daily charge is required normally.
i had times wher i onli need to charge it after 2 days of usage.
Battery drain
Hi
I had the same problem with the baterry, so I changed this:
1.- CPU Profile to "Best Power"
2.- Backlight reduce to 1
3.- Disable 3G if you don't use and change to GMS "Auto"
4.- If you use SPB Shell like me "THIS IS THE BIG PROBLEM" for default SPB consume a lot battery so you need disable the ANIMATE option into setting SPB Shell.
Before do this the battery in only 12hr are consumed all power, now in only 24hrs the battery are consumed 16% power battery without reload the battery. amazing no?
Hey, after using my new 1530mAh battery i bought from ebay i found that it lasts maybe a month with the occasional check of the screen and messages. When i play music(that's pretty much what my phone is for..) it'll last about 16 hours before running out.
I'm using:
1.One of the latest PDAViet ROMs
2.using the AUTO CPU profile(i know its a terrible idea)
3. backlight at 5
4. Radio at GSM900 (not auto)
5. WLAN and Bluetooth almost always off.
PS: buying the new battery was a GREAT idea for my case.

Battery

This may not be an answerable question but it doesn't cost a thing to ask.
I have a used Elf I bought a couple weeks ago. If it is functioning properly and battery is functioning properly what is best and worst battery life I might expect. I know there are a lot of variables, but I'd like a ball park estimate regardless of how your or my phone is set up.
What's the longest time between charge and the shortest you've experienced.
I am breaking in a new battery 18 hours is my best. And sometimes I can see the percentage charged actually drop.
Thanks
Depends on what you are doing with it. My HTC Touch Enhanced only lasts about 4 hours if i have WIFI and Phone on and am using it constantly to watch videos, play games or TomTom Sat Nav. But if its not being used and just has the phone on in standby them it goes for 4 days+ with a few calls or texts. I can often see the battery charge dropping before my eyes so dont worry to much.
In summary WiFi eats the battery and having the screen on and turned up bright takes away the charge very quick. If you just use it like a phone and stop playing with it you will find it will last longer than most mobiles.
Hope this helps
A big handycap of the touch is it's battery mine using wi-fi, tomtom, phone calls and sms last about a day but if i listen to music or watch a concert/video than it lasts about 8h i also must say that i had my elf overclocked and they say that it's battery life is dropping also due to this. I'm now trying something new and don't have my elf overclocked just to see what the batt. usage is...... Can anyone tell me where to buy an 2400ma battery for elf?? I can't use e-bay
It all depends on your usage really...if you use only the phone to make and receive calls that too on light usage....a fully charged battery should last at least 48 hours. But if you use the phone to stream media (youtube etc) or browse, or listen to music and you have extensive phone usage as well...be prepared to get a good ding in your battery life. Given this type of usage, your phone wont last more than 6-8 hours. Wifi and Bluetooth also drain battery big time.
Just a thank you
I appreciate you guys responding and hope more will jump in.
If I had to choose between the size and weight of the Elf and the a better battery life, I'd take the size and weight. Having said that, I moved from an HP RW6815 to the Elf and was really surprised by the battery life of the Elf. I guess I didn't do my due diligence .
Of the 3 main weakness of the Elf - battery life, cpu speed and memory - battery life appears to be the one that not overcomeable.
I read somewhere that battery technology really hasn't kept up.
It will take some management but I'll certainly continue to use the elf with pleasure.
2009 will be a great year because a new technology will be out offering battery charges up to 6400 mA! which is technically 5 times bigger then the current 1390 mA ones But i dont know if the new technology will be used to create those batterys especially for the "old" htc touch
At least i hope it!!!

[Q] Battery life on your F1?

How long does your battery power last between charges? My seems to runs out fast.
My battery last 2 days maximum, with normal usage (texting, wifi for bout 10 mins music for an hour) it will last on average a day.
Same here
Battery life is poor, need to charge at elast once a day; on top of this, charging seems to be awfull slow if the display is on.
Depends on how much I use Wifi, the wifi on the F1 is the real guzzler, having said that, compared to my Touch HD and Omnia II it gets 2 bars signal where those two only get one, as well as the F1 having around 40% better bandwidth.
Usually have to charge it up every day, it is a struggle to get through a second day without consciously minimizing use.
It's very fast, the other two aren't, I consider battery life to be the trade off for that, have owned a lot worse though, eg XDA Flame
Least it's not as bad as my tg01! 1ghz 1000mah and a bigger screen. The battery gets eaten with 3.5hrs heavy use only
+1
Battery life is very short with this phone. 2-3 days max with no wifi, no GPS, only phone-sms...

Battery life issues.

I know there have been many threads like this but I'm just looking for clarification as this is my first Android phone. At my house I usually get the Rogers H speed with 3/4 bars. When I browse the Internet for just an hour, 15% of the battery has been drained. Is this normal on these speeds?
I plan on leaving an IM client on 24/7 and using GPS/maps daily, so I am a bit worried because this may not last the entire day. I could switch to EDGE when I don't need it but apparently I heard that will disconnect once I start a voice call (and want to keep my IM on always). I checked my battery stats and apparently the cell standby (H) is taking most of the battery.
I am using CyanogenMod 6.1.1 with stock radio from Bell. I'm going to try to see if SetCPU makes a difference. And is there any program that can limit the HSPDA bandwidth so less battery is used? Thanks.
call *#*#4636#*#*
If you are at home or in a Wi-Fi accessible, Turn ON wifi - it uses wayyyyy less battery than the phone radio when it comes to Data....
you could get a extended battery.... Mugen Power has one for 1800 mAH and its the same size as the stock battery so no need of a bigger door.
What is your screen brightness set at? The screen is one of the top battery drain culprits. Try turning off auto-brightness, and turning the brightness down to as low as you find tolerable (depending on personal taste, and the lighting conditions in the places you use the phone the most). I recently just lowered my brightness to 35% (still plenty bright under many conditions) from 45%, and already noticing a significant improvement in batter life. Battery usage of the display dropped from over 70% to 45-50%. I haven't had the brightness set this low long enough to see how it translates to hours/days between charges, but we'll see how it goes . . ..
my battery life is retarded. probably less than yours. i swear i think i lose 1% of battery per minute of web surfing. battery is fine if you do not go on the web and have 2g on all day.
Yeah, it's pretty bad.
But that's the same for most smartphones nowadays I think...
Back to the days of game gear, the battery muncher.
6AA = 5 hours of gameplay.
I just bought some Chinese 1500maH batteries on eBay and I don't know if they're actually 1500maH. If I play with my phone a bit, I get 50% after 8 hours at work. Yikes!

Assuming the screen was on the entire time, 15% drain for an hour of web surfing sounds pretty good to me. The main battery eater while using the phone is the screen, so I doubt messing with your connectivity is going to drastically change your battery consumption in this usage scenario. Changing connectivity to Wifi or EDGE would probably help more during those times when your phone is off but your phone is still connected to the internet.
On a side note, I had terrible idle battery life when I was using CyanogenMod 6.1.1 on my Desire Z. When I was using my phone, battery life seemed normal. But when the phone was on standby, it seemed like my phone was running even when it was supposed to be on standby. I suspect it might have been SetCPU constantly polling in the background. I switched to Virtuous and didn't install SetCPU/didn't do any overclocking and my life improved literally threefold.
