A Trick to Get Google Voice Search Working - EVO 4G General

Google Voice only seems to work for Google contacts, and mine are were in Exchange. So I opened the HTC email program, chose import/export, exported all my exchange contacts to my SD card, went to import/export again, and this time imported all of the exchange contacts from my SD card to my gmail account. It seems to have taken a minute or two for the contacts to sync, but now it works 10 times better ... Only gets it wrong maybe 1 in 10 times. When I say "send text to John Smith", the text message is now addressed to John Smith rather than having "John Smith" appear in the body of my text message. Also works for email and for voice dialing. See if this helps (I can tell you it works for me!).
EDIT: I apologize ... I did this quickly, and my original instructions were wrong. I did the import/export through PEOPLE and NOT through EMAIL. From your list of applications, open "People", click "Menu", and click "Import/Export" and follow the instructions.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
This has been bugging me since I installed it.

Where are you getting the import / export settings? I'm using a 2.2 sense ROM with Exchange setup and I can't find that anywhere. Not sure it would work so well anyway, putting my contacts into GMail would give me about 400 duplicates! Kinda frustrating, wish there was a way this could work better.
Side note, why can't you navigate to a contact via voice search? Or can you? (Assuming you have address info listed for the person..)

I appologize ... see my revised original post ... I did this through "People" and not through "E-Mail" .....

When I import it adds the people to my Phone contacts not Gmail
Edit: duh I should have chosen Gmail contacts when importing

Transfer Phone No. from SIM to GMail

Hi @ all
this is my first post here. Hooray!
I have recently purchased a Hero, so far everything is running nicely. I am using my old SIM-Card, on which all Phone Numbers are stored. The Numbers/Names are displayed and usable on the Hero as well as Google Mail Contacts (mostly email only), which I have edited online.
I am looking for a way to transfer/synchronize my SIM-numbers TO Google Mail, so I can merge Phone No. with the existing Contacts or at least use copy & paste to merge them. I simply do not want to type 200+ numbers into Google Mail Contacts manually. Google Mail synchronizes perfectly with the hero but not the "old" numbers from the SIM card.
Any ideas anyone?
Kind regards
Chris
Well, since there seems to be no other solution, I ended up installing the Nokia PC Suite, exporting my SIM-Contacts to Outlook Express, from there to GMail, sorting/merging them and then synchronization with the Hero. Long way round....but beats typing in a lot of Numbers.
C.
wow, that was unnecessary!
In the people application, press menu and then import.
select google from the list and it will import all your SIM contact into the google group that will then be synched to your Gmail and then you can edit them there.
that's what it is supposed to do....of course, if you weren't getting the google option, then it was not unnecessary and i just look like an idiot!!

Several duplicate contacts in Messaging

Guys
Does anybody else have a problem when composing a sms that when typing a recipient some contacts are duplicated (two of each) in the scroll list that appears and also contacts that I have deleted keep appearing (although they are no longer in the people app or synced with google.
In the people app I have unchecked Google and Sim contacts so I am not sure why this is happening?
any clues?
Yes. It is. In the appointment too I got 5,6 repeated duplicates. May be... I think it is because Tattoo sync with Google Calendar besides Outlook calendar, and even Google calendar & Outlook Calendar (2007) they maintained a no. of different calendars like My Calendar and outlook ... and... So, these things created duplicate entries at some points of conflict or something.
This is really annoying.
I wonder if this happens on the hero as well - it runs the same htc sense and htc messaging app - it could be worth posting this in the hero forum as well
ok the plot thickens on this one - I just used HTC sync with outlook for the 2nd time since getting the phone to see if that would get rid of the duplicate contacts in the messaging app.
Guess what - after the sync ive now got three of evry contact showing on the drop down list. Ive got a feeling that syncing with outlook is causing this.
The only way I can think of getting around this is to master reset the phone then only sync with gmail. Ireally dont want to have to do this - anyone got any better suggestions?
I saved all my contacts on the phone and deleted everything on the sim to get rid of the duplicates.

But actually it is not the question of duplicate from sim and phone.. I never save anything on sim... actually it happened while sync with MS Outlook 2007. But never complain before because I always sync with two PCs, one at home and another at my workplace.. and now it also sync with Google.. may be conflict from that...just guessing...
Anybody have some good explanation is welcome.
Just to let you know, this also happens on my HD2, the contacts from SIM and phone are displayed in messaging. This seems to be happening right across the board with sense. There must be a registry tweak or something to correct this? Anyone?
I know how to fix this

You copy all your sim, phone, twitter, facebook contacts to Google first...
Then delete contacts from all other accounts except Google.
Now if your syncd with google, you can open the contacts within gmail ( would be good if you do on PC ) and use the 'find duplicates & merge' button.
i had around 700 contacts which duplicated many a times to some 3000....
this saved me alot of effort...
refer to ScreenShots... Hit Thanks
after everything is merged in google, do you just leave everything not saved on the phone and sim, or can you import them back to the phone and eliminate the duplicates?

Messed up contact list using google sync... any advice?

Hi,
Summary: I used Google sync without thinking, ending up with a mixture of e-mail contacts and phone contacts on my phone and on gmail. Could use some help separating them again.
--
I have synchronised my X10 contact list with the Sony Ericsson sync service (website).
I also have a gmail account. Some days ago I added my computer's e-mail address book to that account.
Yesterday I decided to sync my phone with gmail (by selecting the following on the phone: settings - data sync - google sync). I simply wanted to upload my phone's contact list to gmail. I didn't consider that ALL my e-mail contacts would be added to the phone. I don't need those there...
So, any advice on how to get rid of all the e-mail contacts that google added to my phone?
At the moment, my complete contact list (the one I would like to maintain) exists at SE sync service.
In gmail's contact list, I can select all the e-mail contacts, and probably delete them. However, gmail's list only contains 60% of the contacts that were originally on my phone (of course I would like to keep 100%).
I am thinking about deleting all contacts from gmail and from the phone, and downloading them from SE sync service. Does that work they way I'm hoping? I'm a bit worried about losing my phone contacts from SE sync service.
Any advice?
Also, is there a way to set up gmail contact list so that the phone's contacts stay in one folder, while e-mail contacts stay in another folder?
(I do have some "phone contacts" with e-mail addresses, some "e-mail contacts" with phone numbers, etc, which might complicate things.)

If you go to Phonebook>Menu (left button)>Display group (or something similar)>Contacts with phonenumber , then all contacts without a nummer will be hidden.

Thanks for the tip... However, I do have some "phone contacts" with e-mail addresses, some "e-mail contacts" with phone numbers. I don't need all those contacts twice.

Merging these contacts on gmail.com>contacts using your computer would be the easiest and fastest thing to do I guess.
Or make a new group in the gmail contacts and transfer all your phonecontacts to that group, then let the x10 only show the contacts in the new group.

Sync contacts up to google account

My DHD can sync contacts down from Google. But If I add a contact on my phone it doesn't add the new additon online to my google account. Is this an android shortcoming or something I can do?
Thanks!
You have to save the new contact as a google contact, not a phone contact.
thanks, that option is availble for new contacts, but no apparent option to change an existing to a google contact?
Think when you look at a contact you can press in the upper right corner to make it a google contact. Or you can only show phone contacts and copy them to google contacts.
That option just links to other contacts. Maybe its another bug in the latest update? Thanks for your suggestions
Just a thought... What's wrong with just using the easy to use freeware Windows app MyPhoneExplorer to backup all contacts, notes, callendar appointments to your PC? Why risk broadcasting more sensitive info into the public domain (ie the internet?). I mean telcos here are Australia are known to hold txt messages on their servers for at least a few months (who knows maybe they store all your txt messages?). Also some have services that can backup all your contacts. I just question what could happen to this info in the wrong hands.

I dunno?....all sounds a bit paranoid to me. anyone with the technical know how to intercept my data over the air and decode it probably isn't intrested in getting thier hands on my Auntie Mary's home number or dave from the nags head's email address.
Govenments keep texts and emails in the intrest of national security. I don't mind if thats going to stop my head being blown off by terriorsts. The Telcos probably don't have the time to sit there going through everyone's text messages and looking at what kinky gear they've bought from ebay. I wouldn't get too bogged down in that.
Is there a way to change an existing contact from a phone contact to a google contact?
Thanks

As far as I know, there is no direct way.
If you have a lot of contacts to change from "phone" category to "google" category, a workaround is to export your contacts to sd, then import the vcf file from the sd into google on your pc. Then the contacts will sync down to your phone as google contacts.

LG Contacts has "contacts" sync'd that aren't even contacts, just email addresses!?

I have a nice list of contacts in Gmail but when I setup my LG and it syncs contacts..WOW I have a million stupid contacts that are nothing but an email address. Many of whom are generic or spam accounts that emailed me. How do I get it to JUST sync my contacts list??
OK, figured this out. Gmail apparently remembers email addresses from everyone. Thats fine but it also creates a contact for them! You have to go to your contacts and select "Other Contacts" (mine had like 300 in there). Open it up, select All and delete. Done.
