Skyraider has me thinking... dinc or x - Droid Incredible General

Anyone else have the option to switch to the Droid X from the Incredible but because of Skyraider 2.5.2 vanilla you are having second thoughts? My logic was that a phone without Rom options may stop my incessant xda checking , but at the same time I'm not sure if I can live with motoblur. Also, I really want that big screen. Anyone fell like convincing me either way?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

The Moto X screen is the same resolution as the Dinc screen. That means that the same pixels are just blown up over that big screen. The Dinc screen is so crisp, the X, not so much. Stick with the Dinc.

Its not the same resolution, but close enough.

I bought the x the day it came out, sent it back a week later, and reactivated my Incredible. I just didn't care for the size of the X, or the physical buttons.

A good investment

In addition, the DInc will be the last great AMOLED phone before the coming age of the locked bootloader. Even DInc's in the near future will have locked bootloaders (after the official 2.2 OTA). I fear the age of Android ROM cooking is coming to an end. I'm tempted to go out and buy another DInc, before the OTA hits and then it's...game over... Unlocked DInc's will be worth their weight in gold. Yep, just might be a good time to invest in a couple more unlocked DIncs...
I never was an optimist...

Well done xda! In just 5 replies I believe you have me convinced. Perhaps I will still try the x though... you know what I am really thinking? Keep the small screen (and customization) of the dinc and wait for a Android tablet to fill my large screen needs.
Thanks again, I will cancel my x order on Monday?

The cat and mouse game will continue. Nothing is unrootable. You can't give someone the keys and the lock and expect it not to get picked.

Rooting is a different process than flashing ROMs...or so I have read. But the only way a locked & digitally signed bootloader will get picked is with the appropriate key. And only Verizon has the key and will be able to update your ROMs. It's going to be a lot tougher now. Someone on the inside will have to leak the digital key. Not saying that this can't happen...but will it? Only time will tell...

Couldn't the new law on jailbreaking/rooting come into play here? It's now 100% legal so couldn't you go in and say (using vzw as an example any carrier will work) Verizon, I have this phone here I want rooted. Verizon then says ok we will give you access if you sign this saying you know and are willfully voiding your warranty. Or something like that. I just can't see how these scenarios or something similar won't happen with the new ruling

Its legal, but that doesn't mean they have to make it easy, and it sure doesn't mean that it doesnt void your warranty.

My brother-in-law has an X and I have a DINC. That phone is way to big and comparing them I feel mine works better "my opion". The only thing I like about the X is, it has a nice dash mount.

Hello everybidy as Froyo is just gona Release it will take ages for HTC to upgrade our Incredible and also we are missing on rooted OS.

You mean like the disclaimers in every custom rom thread, where people still manage to brick their phones, and then talk about taking them back to the store for a new one?
HTC doesn't even release legally-obligated kernel sources on time half the time, if you think they're going to go an extra step beyond that you're dreaming.

I believe they're talking about the disclaimer that you get when you unlock a nexus one. HTC will refuse to warranty most nexus ones if the bootloader is unlocked.... and thats the risk im willing to take
But you have to remember that Verizon will get say in that as well and they do not like people messing with their stuff. It's a long shot....

Actually, I already have the cdma nexus one hboot. But it's useless to us until we can flash to start. The version is pretty far from the HTC one as well so it's useless in our attempts. Stay patient.
Not to be a total retard, but is Froyo just a codename for Flash integration, or is it like an entire OS upgrade for the Android? Why would you say it would be ages until the HTC Incredible gets updated?
Sorry if that's a dumb question.

It's an entire upgrade for andriod, well from 2.1 to 2.2, but some good changes. HTC has to go through a ton of testing phases before releasing an upgrade so it usually takes them awhile and no question is a dumb question
I work for the mobile industry and have worked for the computer industry for years, and have never been one to believe the talk about obsolete devices soon after you buy them. It angers me that this incredible is my first Android and I can't root it like my friends who have the Droid and Nexus One, Dream, etc.
I'm almost tempted to take it back and get a diff android, but this damn phone is so cool.

Root will happen. As is, this phone is far from obsolete. 2.2 still needs to be released on an actual device before its mature enough for daily use. Trust me, I went to 2.1 way too early on my last device and it sucked. Then 2.1 devices came out and all of the sudden it was good enough for daily use.

There is no way verizon will ever help with the incredible root, it enables things that verizon want locked on the phone, such as tethering. I'm all for optimism, but lets not forget reality.

I agree. Not only does it enable things VZW disabled intentionally but it increases the chances for issues that can lead to unsatified customers and returns.
HTC probably wouldn't want to go against their customer who is VZW not us. We buy from VZW not HTC.
We just have to trust in our developer community and hope they are able to accomplish root in the near future. I believe every HTC Android device has been rooted in the past so why would the Incredible be any different.
I remember reading an artible about how the G1 would never be able to be upgraded to 1.6 and devs got that phone running 2.1 so I am hopeful

How to pressure bootloader unlock or unlock tool release

We need to put some heat under the atrix development to have the bootloader unlocked or a tool to unlock it ........ in more then one conversation they have stated then retracted the statement saying " if you want custom ROMS buy a nexus " what could we do as a community to fuel the realease of an unlocked bootloder or a unlock tool ........ as functional as the phone may be out of the box it always has much more potential then a factory standard ROM

I don't think we'll really have much luck with that. I think the best route to go is to probably show what Microsoft has done (though I"m sure Moto is well aware): embrace the developers and work with them. Microsoft is learning from the developers, and vice versa. As much as I hate to say it, WinMo suddenly has a lot of potential. I don't see myself switching, as I hate the new version. It's something I'd expect to see in the mid 90s lol.

Are you an idiot? "Put some heat under the Atrix development"...wtf?
The easiest way is to pay someone. Until then and im sure you are just looking for hand-outs and free-bees, you can wait. Or better yet, take the devs comment seriously, buy a Nexus.
These people do this kind of stuff on their free time. Be a little more grateful for the devs that we have working on the stuff they they are working on instead of trying to "Put some heat under the Atrix development".

I took his comment to mean put some heat on Moto for an unlocked bootloader, or at least unlockable. I think the devs here at XDA are extremely talented, but I don't know enough about eFuse to know if they can even crack it.

I think AT$T will also have a say if the bootloader will be locked as well, and if they do. You know how that's gonna play out..
I hope Motorola/AT&T do not lock this one down. As long as this phone runs as fast as early reviews claim, the only two things I would like to see are Root, and the ability to side load apps.

That's all I'm hoping for.
all I'm hoping for is that I can use the Atrix with my T-Mobile sim
T-mobile in the USA uses 1700 MHz for their UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ service, while the Atrix supports 850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz. So it might work, but not for 3G/4G service.
Dont worry we will have an unlock tool soon :

What android phones on AT&T have a locked bootloader? The Captivate sure as hell doesn't. The aria doesn't either.
I don't see why AT&T would be 'the bad guy' in this case.
Hes saying the provider has a say in how the phone functions.
Just like how most providers block tethering unless you pay for it.
Hes suggesting that even if moto wanted an unlocked bootloader at&t could say "no we want a locked bootloader so people don't bypass our restrictions".

Moto is the only manufacturer to use something like eFuse on a bootloader. Look at the Moto phones with the eFuse...and none of them are offered on AT&T. While AT&T may have some kind of input on the matter, that point is moot, as the process is one that Moto created, for their own reasons and purposes, and has nothing to do with the carrier(s).
What phones besides Moto's have anything like eFuse? None. The only ones with eFuse are higher end Android phones, phones that AT&T hasn't carried.
Which high end android phones use Efuses? And what could possibly be the reason for wanting to lock a bootloader that bad? Doesn't Google require all scripts and coding ect to be released by phone makers ?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Motorola did say something about wanting to work with developers, so I'm hoping.. I'll sign an agreement, void my warranty etc..
Moto posted something about their xoom on facebook and at least half the people responding chimed in with something about wanting an unlocked bootloader, I'm not sure how much pressure motorola perceives from this, but I thought it was pretty good.
and unless a moto employee leaks the signing keys, I seriously doubt the bootloader will be unlocked, I doubt they messed up like sony did with the ps3.. unfortunately.

Call for Volunteers

As you know we have root access, and believe the root exploits will work on the production devices.
However I do not believe we will have perm root on the production devices.
We are seeking volunteers willing to assist, by testing a method once the device is released. A risk of bricking exists, and the volunteer will assume 100% of that risk.
Requirements:
1) Will be getting a thunderbolt on or shortly after release
2) Ability to follow directions
3) Basic computer knowledge (ability to use command line would be nice)
4) Have the sdk installed, or be willing to install it
5) Understand the risk of volunteering completely. (ie know bricked phones no longer work)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the other post, you show a photo with SHIP S-OFF at the SPL level... so is this not permanent?
Perhaps I am confused then by what you mean 'perm root' in this case. Do you mean a engineering SPL?

If you read that whole post, you will understand its a pre production device (see the lack of verizon branding?). That is why we had s-off. Production models will not likely have it.
I currently have a touch pro 2 with nand loading xdandroid.
I would be happy to test though, I would rather not be the first brick. LOL
But in the sake of root, I might be willing to risk it. Considering the success rate.... I would say the risk would be high I am sure many precautions will be taken to prevent a brick.

With current ideas, risk is near nothing for one. Other one is slim. (in my opinions)
I am sure once the device is in hand tests will be done prior to flashing.
HTC phones are pretty good about not permanently bricking.
I will be trying it out.
I just have a quick question as I am coming from having a D1. How easy are HTC phone's rooting compared to the D1? I used the super one click root, I have to research HTC's methods now.

I'm still 50/50 on getting it right when it comes out since I'll be paying full retail and we don't have a confirmed price yet. But otherwise, I meet all of the criteria. I actually tested the rage exploit on the Droid 2 first and had to write up the adb commands for others, so I'm comfortable working my way through some hackery.

[Q] questions from a Droid user maybe coming to sprint

I currently have the Original Droid, which has been a great phone in terms of what you have been able to do to it and it's reliability. My question is; how do the owners of the Epic feel about their phone? Still happy with it? Like the roms that have come out for it? And since I haven't paid much attention to Sprint, up until now, any other phones down the line I should think about? My contract with Verizon is up in 3 months.
Yes if you like a hardware keyboard then get the Epic it's a great phone you won't be dissapointed
If you like running the latest and Greatest software then the Nexus S will be out for sprint in like a month.
If you want a powerhouse of a phone then the Evo3D should be out by June following what they did with the original Evo

Thanks for the link!
I never buy phones on contract, and swapped from an iPhone to a Moto Droid in May of last year. Loved the Android platform, since I'm a programmer and super-user -- not a dumb user, the way the iPhone continued to fail.
I switched to the Epic 4G around October of that year (bought off-contract as well, ESN was clear, but ended up still being attached to an account... got scammed and ported it to Cricket myself). Love the keyboard. Love the screen. Not a bad phone at all. I wouldn't buy it on contract, though, since the new phones are coming out. But in my mind, the Epic is a definite upgrade from the Droid, albeit still not quite as flexible as the original Droid was in terms of development and ROMs (was on Sapphire with Droid -- tried pretty much all the different ROMs for Epic and they're nice, but not as nice as something mostly AOSP, i.e. CM7 or Sapphire). Waiting patiently for Epic's CM7 to be mostly stable so I can try to ROM with that -- having very high hopes for it.
So in a nutshell, yes, great phone. But, the only issue is that the phone will be outdated rather quick, though I don't think we're going to see another contender with a decent keyboard for a while with dual-core processors, etc (re: I'm guessing a year). No comment on Sprint service, but double check with reviews in your area to see how coverage, etc, is before making the jump.

DON'T LISTEN TO THIS GUY. His intelligence is showing with trying to trade you for a lesser quality phone. The evo shift does not have an amoled screen or the gpu power the epic has. This phone is amazing and will be amazing for atleast 2 years. This phone will hold up to the dual cores of this year hands down. I've been with sprint for 9 years and they keep getting better. Development could be stronger but we have gotten EVERYTHING WE NEEDED FROM OUR DEVS HERE. CM7 is in progress and there is a stable alpha.

It's a great phone now. Got mine for the second time on friday and updated that evening ota. I also have a Evo and Evo shift and had the dual core Atrix(hype at this point imho).
The Epic is my favorite although i do prefer the keyboard on the Evo shift cause its smaller which is odd but rue

Well maybe you like having to spend a million hours to get the phone to work, but for me, not really. It's almost a full time job trying to get this thing to work right! I agree the hardware is great, but not worth the fight to make it work right. I've spent hours flashing this thing since the new update and I will tell you I still have problems with this phone. If you would like me to list all the problems with my phone I would be happy to do so!

YOU have issues, the vast majority of people are capable of flashing a ROM correctly and troubleshooting any problems they might have, don't dissuade someone from purchasing a phone they want because YOU have problems using it correctly.
I really do like my phone and the ROMs are smoke'n.
They have been having a bit of an issue releasing Froyo that doesn't have some level of suckage.
We're expecting a 3rd try this week.
What balances that are the AWESOME devs for it; they popout an updated ROM with the latest update in no time at all.
Everyone is spot on in regards to hardware keyboard, I find myself (I HAD to have a real keyboard) actually using the swype keyboard way more than the physical one. Go figure.
Some GPS issues; though each update makes it a bit better.
There is a reason that this phone is the #1 selling PDA phone.
Having all said that, in a few months there will be some really powerful stuff that will just blow the doors off anything currently available. If I were in your position. I'd go for a multi-processor phone.
Good luck
I say get an evo.
Theres a whole lot more going on with the evo development that its a much more flexible phone.
Our phone has a lot of potential, but with a fracyion of evo/droid devs its harder for the epic to get there.

Check out the hardware keyboard fix from mkasick - it's implemented in SRF 1.1.0 and its accompanying kernel, Twilight Zone 1.1.0. If you don't want to leave your current ROM, give Twilight Zone a try. The fix is an adjustable one - so you can set the value as low as you want. That should completely eliminate any issues you're having.

These forums speak for them selves. You don't see half the problems in the HTC forums. Also if you have BOTH phones you would know how many more problems there are on this phone. I would wait for the nexus s if you want a sammy. I would not choose this phone again if I had it to do over.

I do have both, and have had few issued with either, I made the choice to stick with the Epic as my daily driver because its a much nice phone hardware wise and significantly lighter. I find it difficult to believe you would have any of the issues you're having if you properly flashed it.

I can't even tell you how many times I've flashed this phone trying to get an optimal set up. I have found that over all I've had less problems with the stock rom, but it is still a lot more buggy than the evo. I would just give this phone to my girlfriend and take her evo, but I don't think she would know what to do if the phone went haywire on her. Hers is stock and I've had far less issues with it than this phone. The only times I had any real issues with her evo is when I tried to mess with it. Trust me man, I thought I was the one screwing up this phone, that's why I'm trying out the stock hardware! All I'm saying there are a lot more issues. Trust me I bought this phone for the same reasons as everyone else! I'm just getting sick and tired of having to Odin the damn thing everyone 3 to 4 weeks! I thought a program may have been causing it, so now I'm trying stock ROM EC and I've only rooted it. I've downloaded XDA, Poynt, Blow up, and the Chase apps. These are the only apps I have on here now, so I was hoping that it was maybe an app causing my problems. Today I had my first problem since going to my current set up. I've been talking about it in this forum, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12464672#post12464672. I'm hoping that it's something that I just needed to reboot my phone. The only other thing I can think that made my phone go black screen is when I use the media player and play videos. I'm hoping it's not one of the apps, but I haven't been able to replicate the problem today. I'm just saying that my girl doesn't have any of these issues with the evo and right now I'm basically on the edge with this phone!!!! I also don't want to shell out a bunch more money for a phone so I just kind of have to deal with it and hope I can find a solution, but I would not recommend this phone to anyone after what I've been through! The Nexus S may be a different story since it's stock, but not this phone!

I'm not gonna say that flashing isn't a complicated thing. But that's your choice and if you really want to experience amazing ui then it takes time of the individual to figure how and what they can and can not do. That's why there is 1 click root. Flashing is not meant for everyone so if you don't have the time that's cool but don't blame the phone for your short comings either in time or intelligence or pesistence.

Trust me I've flashed this phone many times. I'm sorry to tell you that when you flash Roms and kernels there are still going to be some problems. I realise that you may want to flash Roms and kernels to make the phone run a certain way, otherwise there wouldn't be multiple roms or kernels to flash if everything worked perfect with one. You're showing your ignorance if you think that a flashed rom and/or kernel is going to be problem free. There's a reason why there are constant updates to the roms and kernels.
I'm just tired of doing it and you should be able to use the phone, without it crashing, without having to mess with it. I don't think it's too much to ask for the phone to not crash when it's stock. Maybe I need to go to full stock with out root. Maybe that's what's causing the phone to mess up. That's my next option!
Edit: I wish I could see other things you've bought. Just curious what type of repairs you had to do to them...
Not sure why you would expect something to NOT work correctly out of the box? You make a valid point it shouldn't work correctly stock..........

Whatever you do, do NOT get the Epic. Even if it's free. The keyboard TO THIS DAY does not work properly. It still misses keys and it's not layed out all that well either. I came from a g1 that had a keyboard that ACTUALLY registered keys, even if you type faster than my grandma. Please do not get the epic, get the evo shift or wait for something else on Verizon.

Here it goes....

Sitting at Verizon, gonna return my turbo for a HTC One M8 simply because 1 week of having to view ads and not being able to run rooted programs is driving me ****ing nuts. Good luck guys, I can't justify the off contract price for a device that may never even see root. Sob....
Well..........
BYE
Interesting choice. I came from the M8 and can't believe you would prefer that phone myself but to each their own. Good luck man.
Why are people so damn impatient? The phone just came out. If you had a history with Motorola phones then you know they will end up being rooted. I always root my phones but can wait until a root comes out for it. Anyway have fun downgrading because of something so menial.

You'll spend $600 on a phone, but won't add wi-fi tether to your account without cheating the system and stealing it through root?
You the man, dawg.
You pay full price? Wow... I just really think that the Moto series is going to get left behind... But that's my opinion, and they're like assholes, everyone has one...
Best phone out there, I can't believe your impatience is getting you such a huge downgrade.
I have the m8 now and it's one of the biggest regrets I've ever made. The build is beautiful, but thats where it ends. Camera is terrible, battery life is terrible, performance has the typical htc 6 month frame and then you have to format and start fresh again. I'd def reconsider that choice, next week I'll be getting the turbo. My wife got hers about a week ago and I cannot say how jealous I am.

Wow really? I also have the M8 and I easily get a day on a full charge, its always siper smooth, even when I have power saver on. I use Bluetooth to stream all my music. I can agree with you on the camera being mediocre, but it has otherwise been one of the greatest phone experiences I've had yet.
I'll also just say there are too many people here expecting too much and cry when it isn't instantly given to them. Don't buy a phone expecting someone to root it. Accept it for what it is and remember root is a bonus.
Im being patient myself but, hot damn, I want voice and data simultaneously. f root, give me that and ill be content for a bit.

Aren't they going to release it next month for the Turbo?
I agree some people expect to much from a phone. There will always be a downside to each smart phone. I to was thinking about returning my Turbo and maybe get the z3 or Note 4. But I've always loved Motorola phones. Great build, voice, reception, battery. I've owned a note series before but I've always had problems with either the wifi or the GPS not locking on.
This is by far the best phone I've owned. Love it. I'm just glad I never returned it this past Friday.

To be fair , He's cheating a broken system where it should be illegal for a carrier to ask you to pay extra to unlock a function of the data you already pay for.
It will be illegal for them to charge for tether if the net neutrality push goes anywhere, or if the FCC can begin to classify this stuff under title 2.

Ya I know it sounds crazy, but I'm just not a fan. I've had htc devices that go back to the Titan, diamond, hero, evo, thunderbolt, rezound, etc,. This phone is the biggest let down and it may just be me on this, but man its just too finicky. It absolutely offers no protection as well.. if this thing touches water, your done. I think sense ui has major issues and starts to get corrupt after a period of time. I had this same issue with all of my htc devices. Go back to my Samsung nexus, g2 or even my note 3 and i've never experienced this.
Day 2 with the M8. No regrets so far. It's lighter, good battery life, root, tether, custom Rom, xposed , xprivacy. No regrets.

Damn, I would have sold you mine M8 cheap. I still have both the the M8 is going to my son. No way I would pick it over the turbo. Different strokes for different folks as they say.
Best of luck with the M8. There's some good folks in those forums as well. Now go find them and say hello for me [emoji1]

Keep in mind that
A) he disappeared
B) it only worked for 2014 devices(manufactured) the last time he was around.
C) it wasn't a hack, someone stole something from moto.
There is no reason to believe that will happen again
Also sunshine only works on specific versions of the OS and won't work on the latest versions. The next advertised sunshine update does not include support for the latest firmware. As of the last time I checked. Good luck with root in lollipop. .
