Froyo and Wireless Tether - EVO 4G General

I was running android 2.1 with Fresh 1.0.1 and Wireless Tether p2 till 3 days ago.
I mostly use Wireless Tethering, more than what i use my phone to call, text, or anything else.
I was very happy with the speeds i was getting, and i had not upgraded to froyo because i saw wireless Tether was not working on froyo 2.2.
Recently i saw a post of some ppl saying that Wireless Tether p8 was working great on Froyo 2.2 so i decided to go for it.
The results are Horrible, I cant even surf while in a skype call. Before the upgrade i could be on skype, in Aion and loading videos at the same time.
If anyone knows a way to downgrade, or to fix this let me know. I will appreciate it.

Well, seeing as you must be still rooted, just do a complete wipe of your phone and go for a nandroid backup from before the update. If you don't have one, shame on you! J/K, I sometimes forget too. Basically, you could just load a different ROM, like the one you were on previously. Just be sure to do a full wipe, including dalvik cache, cache, and system/data partitions. Then load the ROM and you should be back to 2.1.
One other thing. Did you update your radio images? If you did, then you'll want to find the old ones that go with your 2.1 ROM. If not, you should try upgrading them, as they may bring better data performance. Just a guess, but you never know.

Ty for your reply i appreciate your help ^^, if anyone out there has a solution for the teather or knows something let me know, but for now i guess i have to downgrade T__T

To my knowledge if you took the OTA update to Froyo from Sprint, then there is no way to downgrade as of yet because you need root in order to flash a new ROM. No one has come up with a way to root Froyo yet. Your best bet would be to use Easytether. It's ten bucks, but that's better than $30 per month.

Or just search for the Easy Tether APK online and install it using your SD for free. that's what I did. Works great, but I'm still waiting to find out that Froyo is rooted.

Don't upgrade until we know. Eventually it will work. Initially, I doubt it.
I dunno
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
With your current ROM? I don't see why you won't be able to keep tethering. It's not like the roll-out for every un-rooted EVO is magically going to install a modification onto your phone which forces the tethering function to be disabled.
On the other hand, if you actually accept the OTA, and are lucky enough not to get bricked, you will lose root, will lose tethering, will lose your ROM, will (most likely) lose some apps, will see a drop in speed, will see a drop in battery life.
What data do you have to suggest a drop in speed our drop in battery life? Even the fastest 2.1 is less than half of a 2.2 linpack score and quadrant scores seem nearly double as well.
Unless you've already got the update and can confirm any of that...
I do agree though, you will lose wifi tether and probably root for the near term.
I, for one, will stick with good ol' DC3.2.3 until the devs get the 2.2 RUU incorporated into a new ROM.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The stock Sprint 2.2 ROM will probably disable this built-in feature since they want to charge for their branded service. Rooted ROMs usually have those restrictions removed so you can install programs like Wifi Tether.
My advice is to wait for a rooted version to come out or wait for another modified ROM based on it. Don't install the new Sprint OTA unless you want to lose root indefinitely.

New "improved" ROM. Anyone try it?

Just saw a tweet from DLife about an improved Froyo 2.2. Anyone try it yet? I'm not sure I want to do a wipe if its not really that much improved.
EDIT: link http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/02/download-new-android-2-2-droid-incredible-build/
EDIT EDIT: My recommendation is that you don't use this build. It lacks the stock wallpapers except for the red swirl. It lacks the stock ringtones, AND I'm not sure it even has Flash 10.1. Some sites don't seem to work now that I installed it and I'm reinstalling the previous 2.2 leak instead of this one.

Im steering clear from it. I have made a stable ROM based off the first leak, used skyraider2, amd used the leak itself, amd there is nothong wrong with the firsf.

So far I agree.... Not worth wiping out everything I've done with the first leak! Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
I do have one question though.... Shouldn't there be some way to update the first leak with a new version in the future without wiping the phone? They should have mostly all the same base right?

I'd be more than happy to keep doing "upgrades" if that was the way it worked but these really aren't upgrades; they're new installs. Wiping each time is painful.

+100. I've worked out all the bugs that affect my daily usage: 3g hotspot working, no 0's on my Gmail, still pulling 1250-1300+ on Quadrant, market/browser work beautifully. I'll need to see some solid improvements/benchmarks to make it "worth" switching.
Though for posterity's sake, for those concerned about wiping, since it's a 2.2 -> 2.2, I would think a proper titanium restore would work without much issue, app-wise.
Opposite
I am the opposite ... I see no reason to apply a beta radio and a beta pre-release (even one from yesterday) at this point, especially if its going to be a pain in the butt due to radio reflash and app reinstall. Would just as soon wait in hopes that unrEVOked can root the real OTA. Would MUCH rather go thru the pain and effort (and danger) using VZW's release.
Have you gotten Ti backup to work with 2.2? I had issues. It worked to restore my apps from 2.1, but since switching to 2.2 I could do a backup. I remember there being some issue but not what it was. I haven't tried again since.
As for the upgrade, I'm only using the stock Froyo rom and I've found some bugs in it when using Seesmic and Astro amongst others. I think they need to upgrade for 2.2 compatibility before I upgrade the rom.

Just installed the latest ota. All if well. No problems like the last rom. No lame patches and bugfixes neccessary. Works good. Titanium backuped everything fine. Took me 5 minutes after full wipe to have all my stuff back to normal.
None?
Check your paid market apps and make sure they all show up

Did you do a "Backup all user apps + system data" and then "Restore missing apps + all system data" or did you just do apps? I'm new to best practices of Titanium Backup... Thanks!
I just do app+app data. No system crap...it isn't that hard for me to add the 4 icons and clock to the screen and setup some ringer preferences...even with all that it took me 5 minutes. Some people may have insane screens full of widgets and apps...mines pretty simple. Also I already fixed my build.prop Plus I only have 2 paid apps...titanium and phonemypc and I already pulled the apks from my phone to install manually without the market anyway. So I dunno.

Well, see?
You had to do a lame fix
Damn. I'd have to go back in and remove all of the bloatware, reinstall all of my apps, and everything else. Not sure I'm up for a minor fix.
Just installed it.. I have to say.. its THE BEST ota leak so far. It's far more stable than the first leak... and it seems like it doesn't drain the battery as much..
Most recent ota leak is a nice improvement over first 2.2 leak. And yeah all you guys saying full wipe is painful.... titanium backup is awesome and can have you back from a full wipe with everything restored and intact within minutes. This 2.2 is faster, fixes most of the problems of the first leak (yes market still needs the fix... so what? Easy easy fix....) and imo is very much worth the upgrade. But seriously only once you know how to extract the most from titanium....
I am more than happy to help anyone with advice on titanium usage or whatever.... pm if you have questions or need help

I've got it down to about a half hour doing a Titanium restore. I just use that to restore the apps and the data.
What takes most of the time is getting the screens set up again.
Still seem to have problems with the Market however... intermittent freezing, hangs on "downloading", etc.

[Q] Noob Question

Please accept my apology in advanced. This forum is so huge, that when I search I get so much information that I quickly get lost in the sauce.
Having moved from the Vibrant, to the Captivate, and now to the Epic, I'd like to flash my phone with Froyo that has the tethering built in.
Can someone please either tell me the 411 on Froyo with tethering for the Epic, or point me to a link where I can find the rom?
I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks again.

OK. You can first refer to this post for how to update your system to Froyo (DK28):

Later, if you want to root your system to get more fun, check this link:

OR, if you want a clean wipe-install of the rooted Froyo (not update from your current firmware), check these two posts and pick either one of them to follow as you like (don't follow both):

BUT, remember this full-install will wipe out everything on your phone like contacts, messages etc., so backup your stuff before using this method. It wont affect your stuff on SD card.
Good luck and have fun

Thank you for the quick response.
I should have been more clear.
The most important part flashing the new rom to my phone is the teathering.
Does the Froyo build that has been leaked (the one Google is giving out), does it come with the native teathering?

this is the part i don't really understand. what do you mean by tethering here? are you talking about turning your phone into a hotspot? If this is the case, you don't need to upgrade to Froyo version, just go to market and download EasyTether and follow the instruction. You'll be good. But it's USB-tethering. If you want to use WiFi-tether, you need to root your firmware first and then use Wifi-tether app to do that.
Yes that's exactly what I'm talking about. Does it come with the hot spot functionality that Google built into Froyo (which carriers and manufacturers are removing so they can charge for the service)?
I'm concerned Sprint/Samsung has removed this from the Epic Froyo build. In which case I wont even bother.

OK, this Froyo build doesn't contain a native tethering. You need additional app "Wifi-tether" or "EasyTether" to make that happen. So you don't need to upgrade to Froyo. You can download those apps in your current Epic system to enable the function. They're easy to use and free. But, again, "Wifi-tether" requires your phone is rooted otherwise it can't work. EasyTether doesn't require that, but in stead, it requires a physical connection of your computer and your phone through USB cable to let your computer use your phone internet service.

So I just rooted my phone, what now?

Ive been reading about the possibilities of rooting and why its a good thing.
Well I finally rooted, but what should I do now?
I've already removed the bloatware and im not interested in themes.
As for ROMS/CustomOS, there hasnt been any ROM that sets it that much more better then the stock 2.2firmware that came with the phone. Aside from the possible swipe texting, is there any significant benefit from using a custom ROM as oppose to the standard OS?
Also what are some must have apps for rooted phone?
Feels like the only real benefit from rooting (if one is not interested in themes/looks) is just removing bloatware
Same boat
So I just rooted my phone too, I was hoping to gain the ability to remove the bloat ware and maybe free mobile hot spot, but im such a noon im too worried about bricking my phone so really all I've done is the initial root, I did download the liberty 1.5 and saved it to my memory card but I don't really know if I did a full backup or not. I downloaded the titanium backup app that specifically says root on it and did what I thought was a backup in preparation for putting the liberty rom on my phone. Do I automatically gwet free mobile hotspot or is that a separate app all together?

Im not sure about titaninum backup or the liberty 1.5 youre trying to install.
However, I can hopefully share with you what I know about the free mobile hotspot. If by that you mean tether, than yes, you do need a seperate app. In fact the app is the only thing you need, no need for roms and what not. Some of the tethe rapps are PDAnet, easytether, and wireless tehter
theres probably more but those 3 are the ones I see most mentioned and hear success stories with most of them
alot of the Roms out there include a wireless 3g hotspot app in them, for example the rom im rocking is Darkslide 4.2 and it includes the app, and always remember to give credit where credit is due ^_^ and always thank the devs for doing this for free
Oh for sure, I appreciate the help info ethus site is the bomb and the dev's here kick butt. So I was using pda net before I rooted but I was told by someone that you can get the wireless hot spot by rooting. I might check out that dark sliders rom too. Is it a lot of work tojump between roms?
Just remember than Verizon is now monitoring rooted phones and they can send you a bill for data. I would suggest against it but it depends on where you live as to if they are monitoring.

How do they even know that a phone is rooted? Im guess I don't know what to think of that.. I know its a service you are supposed to pay for but isn't that kinda along the same lines as apple or google monitoring you? Do we know what markets Verizon is monitoring? Is it something where they pick the people who are using gig's of data, I've only used maybe a couple hundred megabytes

New Softbank Rom: 369

Totally out of left field: dell released a new rom for softbank.
The changelog does not seem to state much.
Android 2.2.2
Build date: Jul 10, 2012
Build: 29579
Dell Stage 1.6
The rom is completely identical to 366 except for the following files:
<root>\boot.img
<root>\amss.mbn
<root>\dbl.mbn
<root>\dsp1.mbn
<root>\osbl.mbn
<root>\system\build.prop
<root>\system\app\quickoffice.apk
Out of all those, only boot.img seems to have changed more then just being resigned/trivial changes.
Dell normally holds a rom for 1 month to test before releasing, but the normal release date for a rom built in july would be mid/late august.
So for whatever reasons: they held it back for a month.
It also only includes a trivial amount of changes, so it's not much more then going though the motions of a release
I received the update SMS today and came here to check. Figured you would have some additional info on this.
Still Froyo? I guess I'm never getting a phone from Softbank again.
Blame Dell/Qisda's dell team/Softbank
The SPro's still on GB too.
The Lenovo LePad S2005 (ie the "Opus one") got ICS back in April.
I dont even know why they released 369, I cant tell if it even changed anything as far as softbank's changelog is concerned.

Official roms arnt custom roms, they cant simply release it and hope there's no serious issues. They have to have staff on hand to test for 3 weeks before releasing.
Even if they only changed like a dozen lines of code at best for it.

The MMS issue I was having was me being an idiot - I had run out of credit I have never used Wifi Hotspot. There is an app that comes rolled into this rom which seems to be for tethering but i have not used it. The WiFi in general is excellent and seem way more stable that any other ROM I've used to date (and I've used quite a few). I think it may be easier to look up a 3rd party (barnacle I think) tool to get the tethering working - but I know very little about this.

I've been using it for a while and generally all is good. It seems better on battery than the 360 rom, the WiFi seems more stable, though I do get the odd issue with it not connecting but far less than any other rom I've used. I do not use tethering and I know that is not present, but there are apps in the market to do this anyway. SuperUser.zip also happily rooted it with no issues. It does seem to be quicker than other Froyo roms too - so overall I'd say it's worth an upgrade. Be aware that the native messaging app will not work on it for some reason, but Handsent or Go SMS are just fine and dandy - unless you run out of credit (see earlier post by me)
If I had to stick to a single rom this would be the one. I am tempted to go for DSC and I've been told by the author that it can be flashed over this rom - so I may report back when 1.6 is rolled out fully and I've installed it to give a comparison.
I hope this helps!
I've looked and haven't found any links for what I'm looking for which is just the amss and dsp1 files to flash in fastboot... anybody got those uploaded anywhere? I hate to flash the entire ROM just to extract those two, but if I have to then I just have to... thanks guys for any help
