What is the difference between the 2 phone versions besides the buttons and carrier?
Checking samsung.ca for the i9000 it shows it only supports divx and wmv files while SGH t959 shows h264 and MKV, is it just mislabeled on samsung.ca?
I would think the phone itself are the same just different buttons and antenna correct?
I'm a Bell Canada Customer and will be getting the i9000 soon but just want to know why have 2 different vibrant versions, personally i think the captaviate is the best in terms of look and i would much rather have the 4 button layout vs the bell 3 button one.
There are some minor differences between the two models... They are well explained in the Wikipedia page about the Galaxy S... Sorry can't post links yet...

Hey All,
Need your help with something. Not only is there the Euro version of the Galaxy S, but soon there will be the Sprint Epic, T-Mobile Vibrant, AT&T Captivate, and Verizon Fascinate. All of these are Galaxy S phones, but the development will vary a bit from device to device.
How should we handle this at XDA? Should we have multiple (separate) forums for all five devices? Or should we just have sub-forums under this Galaxy S main forum? Please vote!
More specifically:
Option 1........
Samsung Galaxy S
- Galaxy S General
- Galaxy S Acessories
- Galaxy S Android Development
- Sprint Epic Android Development
- T-Mobile Vibrant Android Development
- AT&T Captivate Android Development
- Verizon Fascinate Android Development
- Galaxy S Themes and Apps
Option 2........
Samsung Galaxy S
- Galaxy S General
- Galaxy S Acessories
- Galaxy S Android Development
- Galaxy S Themes and Apps
Sprint Epic
- Epic General
- Epic Acessories
- Epic Android Development
- Epic Themes and Apps
AT&T Captivate
- Captivate General
- Captivate Acessories
- Captivate Android Development
- Captivate Themes and Apps
Verizon Fascinate
- Fascinate General
- Fascinate Acessories
- Fascinate Android Development
- Fascinate Themes and Apps
T-Mobile Vibrant
- Vibrant General
- Vibrant Acessories
- Vibrant Android Development
- Vibrant Themes and Apps
has to be option 2.
Otherwise the place will become 'flooded' and 'cluttered' and the same questions being answered many times.
Also it will be difficult to help people in different regions and who have different firmware etc
Definitely Option 2.
I don't think there's a need to even split the development forums.
As i see it, "Galaxy S" is a platform. The hardware for all the devices is 99% similar, with the exception of keyboards.
I'm thinking more like-
- Galaxy S General
- Galaxy S Acessories
- Galaxy S Android Development
- Galaxy S Keyboard devices Android Development
- Galaxy S Themes and Apps
If it turns out that the devices will actually be pretty different, i support option 1.
Let's keep it as a big happy family, no need for splits.

They are very similar, but the AT&T and T-Mobile versions are GSM, whereas the Sprint and VZW versions are CDMA, two totally different technologies.
I'm going to have to go with option 2. Not only will it become cluttered, but do we know yet just how similar the devices are? Like someone already mentioned, there will be GSM & CDMA models. But on top of that, the software might still be just different enough...

my point exactly.
option 2 makes the most sense
Am i missing something? Option 2 is the most cluttered one with 5 different forums for the same thing. The development forums need to be separate, but why have 5 different general, accessories, and themes/apps forums? The phones aren't that much different.
Split gsm and cdma like ya did with Hero. Makes sense to me.

Then splitting GSM and CDMA should be more than enough.
Option 2
Vince
theyre all so similar, just do Option 1, i dont want to have to go back and forth between 5 different threads to find an answer.. add if we ask a question, we wont hit all the users, wed have to ask in 5 different general sections.
Has to be option 1, they are similar phones with a few cosmetic difference but as people have said may all be different to develop for, so specific development forums would be the best way.
Option 2 makes sense!
The phones are too different to keep in the same place. They are all different shapes, one has a keyboard, two are CDMA but two are GSM, some have flashes, they have different bands... they are different phones. Someone said we don't need separate general/accessories forums, but there do need to be AT LEAST different accessories forums.
option 2.
I'll want roms with sprint specific content and keyboard features.
Keep each separate.
Option 1. Otherwise there'll be so much duplication that everyone will miss out on the collective benefit of having all the best devs and support people working together.

i agree with this.
Option 1 is the best. Even with keyboard and CDMA vs GSM the phones are similar enough that general questions will overlap. Just like the forums for other HTC devices (Topaz/Touch Diamond 2/Pure for example).
The accessories issue could be solved if posters are generous enough to use something like [Galaxy S], [Captivate], etc. in front of the post. Of course, that won't work well if the phones prove to be popular, then different forums for CDMA, GSM, and/or accessories may be needed.

i agree
Option 2 is to much of a good thing i think. Like others said, the difference is minimal, so my opinion is just add more categories where it's needed. Makes it easier for the knowledgable people to reply to problems which may have already been answered.
It will be funny when the epic *****ing starts when the noobs flash a gsm rom to their cdma device and end up with a paper weight.
What are the differences between these two devices? Can the i9000 galaxy s firmware be flashed to a vibrant and vise versa?

I can tell you that the Vibrant does not include FM radio. It supposedly has the hardware but not the software to run it. It also has 4 buttons vs the galaxy S's 3 (if the middle one is indeed a home button, something I never could figure out).
There may also be some more subtle differences under the hood, which I'm sure you are referring to.
Buttons are different. Radio is different. Phone is a different shape.
Vibrant may have a different GPS chip than the I9000, one without the FM radio. This is unconfirmed though.
You can flash firmware interchangeably, as long as you then flash the correct kernel on top so that the buttons work. You must also use the correct odin flash tool. You also can't flash radios from the different versions.
This is all what I've heard from vibrant owners, not sure if this is 100% accurate. Make this post in the vibrant section to be sure.
the Canada Vibrant is 99% identical to the International i9000, and compatible with i9000 firmwares, already tried and proven.
only the radio bands are different
The USA Vibrant is kinda sucky and is not compatible with the i9000 firmwares
Why are there so many galaxy forums?
I'm trying to understand because this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1566
Is really busy, with a lot of android roms.
The ATT Galaxy S 3 android rom forums seem much smaller.
Why are these roms not compatible? Is the International version that much more popular?
The international has been out a lot longer than the US version. And they are not compatible due to different hardware.

While it may seem they're all the exact same, the various us versions have different radios and other carrier specific stuff. And remember, the international gs3 has been out since may, of course the devs are used it by now. The non-int versions really only just came out a week ago.

The international Galaxy S3 (i9300) is practically a different phone from any of the US variants, in terms of hardware. It uses a different SoC (system-on-a-chip; different processor and graphics processor) and different cellular radios.
The US variants are also all different in the regard that they each run slightly different software by default, but the only hardware difference is in the cellular radios. They share the same SoC, so it's feasible to port ROMs between them without too much work. This also applies to the Canadian variants and such, as they share the same SoC and hardware as the US variants, with the exception of those cellular radios.
The Verizon version is the black sheep in that it has a locked bootloader, and currently ROMs that utilize a non-stock kernel can only be flashed to it (and work) if a workaround is used.
The one & main reason that I m going to Give you is::::

Reading skills are fundamental.
The majority of noobs read "The" then continued to brick their phones.

Hello all.
Long time user of XDA but kinda confused on this particular thread. I have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and have only installed roms from it's respective forum. I also notice other carriers have their own forums as well but this one is just labeled Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I've never knew which phones these forums support or why it exists in the first place. Thank you very much for info and sorry for dumb question.. I just can't seem to find the answers. I do realize I can see what models the roms support and most models are something other than the sprint or verizon models (N900p and N900v) thanks again.
These are the boards for the remaining 6.9 billion inhabitants of planet Earth, namely the ones not living in the USA.
More specifically, these boards are dedicated to the International and/or Unbranded versions of the Note 3. Primarily the N9005(Snapdragon) and N900(Exynos), but also the Canadian N900W8, the Asian models and all other non-US models.
US models have separate boards because they are completely different devices with often completely different firmware. (right down to settings and options.)
All non-US models are variants of the primary models, the N9005 and N900. Aside from a few small, cosmetics software differences, they are all the same. So we've got one place for all of those.
But there's plenty of discussion regarding the US models here too, because the General, Q&A, Accessoires and Apps boards are for all Note 3 variants.
Hope that clears it up a bit.
