I cant pinpoint exactly when this started happening as i rarely go into roam...but i believe it was after the 3.16 radio install. Anyways whenever my phone tries to roam now i get a Verizon operator messages saying i am unauthorized. My carrier is Sprint

DO NOT Call Sprint if you have upgraded your Radio or ROM to anything else that Sprint hasn't released. This can result in you voiding your warranty if you aware them of your upgrades.
If you installed a new radio and ROM are you sure that you installed the Sprint version not Verizon's? What some have done to fix roaming issues is call *228 and program there roaming capabilities from there.
Also maybe your A-Key for Sprint just needs to be refreshed / re-entered. check your MSID and make sure that it is displaying your phone number, and that you have the current PRL installed on your phone.
To reach these settings dial ##778.

So i tried the few things you said, *228 says invalid feature code, my MSID is correct, had Sprint update my PRL and no luck. But one thing i noticed is that my A-Key is blank...how can i go about obtaining this
Does anybody here have a HTC Hero on the Crickt Network. I can't seem to get it working. I live in Philadelphia. I've tried every Cricket PRL on the Colordo(If I Speeled it right) site and i get nothing. My phone wont even dial out. I did everything the guide said. I unlocked the phone and added the PRL and I get nothin. It has to be something more that i have to do. I can't even find a place in philly that does it. THNKyOU
we need the whole story here...
is it a sprint hero?
which PRL specifically are you using? try looking at a friends phone who has cricket in the same area (is usually listed under phone info>prl) and use the same one
when you say unlocked what do you mean? spc changed?
does your phone *228? does it 611? is philly an AWS market? (i dont know)
is the device actually on an account?
there are good threads out there.. work your google-fu if any of these terms or ideas are foreign to you (dont be afraid to try the google cache if a certain site is down too.. m-f?)
I Have a Sprint Hero. and i have tried every cricket PRL. I have a active Cricket phone and I also checked the info on that phone and i can't find the PRL that my cricket phone has. No *228 does not work or 611. When i dial out it does nothing. and I mean unlocked by changing the SPC to 000000
if you cant 611 or *228 im inclined to think you didn't get the prl properly working
on the hero you can ##786# to check the current prl
once you have the right prl and can 611 then get your phone activated and program... really not any different than any other cdma
really search though. theres threads that cover the whole process already
edit: try asking in a local cricket store if you are in an AWS market, theres a chance your phone might not work with philly/cricket
Ok, As most of the Cellular South Users know, the auto PRI feature does not work for us. When we install a ROM with this feature, we get "Hands Free Activation" errors on start-up, we experience data loss with a data connection error that appears at random, etc. What I want to know is, how can you remove this feature from the ROMs? I want to use Fresh 2.0d, but this problem is getting on my last nerves. I understand that making ROMs aren't easy, but there are more than just Sprint CDMA heros out there. I would actually like to start a Cellular South Specific ROM. Could someone please inform me on how we can remove this new "Auto PRI" feature designed for Sprint? Also, if anyone is with Cellular South, and would like to team up and start a Cellular South Hero Development team, let me know! THANKS!
EDIT: This is the exact error that Cellular South users get at random times
Data Call Failure
Error Code 65 .Unknown error. Sign in failed. Please try again. If the problem persists, turn your phone off then turn it on again.
That started ONLY when I started using Auto PRI update ROMs.
For the record... I have always put in my roms that it is only for Sprint CDMA Heros.
Are you able to tell me what PRI the cell south heros are supposed to have? You may need to look at one that hasn't been flashed with anything.
Try this:
##DATA# (so ##3282#)
You'll need your MSL six digit code to get into the edit mode.
Tap on Data Profile
Scroll down to the bottom and change the DSA Server URL to be just https://
Also, for the record, I'm not on Sprint myself. I'm on GCI Wireless in Alaska. Everytime I flash Fresh2.0d to phone on our network I get that "Hands-Free Activation" but when I do the steps above it doesn't happen again on subsequent re-boots. Although, I usually remove ALL of the Sprint bloat-ware as well so I don't know if it's the steps above or removing the Sprint apps that's actually stopping the activation screen from returning.
Useless Sprint apps that I always remove:
Sprint_Core.apk
SDSA.apk
OMADM.apk
IQRD.apk
HtcIQAgent.apk
sfl-prod-release.apk
I'm also using the Auto PRI from Fresh 2.0d and I have not had any problems with it. The PRI shouldn't be affecting your data connection at all. PRI, in the wireless world, stands for "Product Release Information" and contains both product release information as well as some authentication measures that can be used by the carrier for their network specific applications. Your actual connection settings are dependent on what is entered in the programming in the ##778# ESPT programming. You might want to look there and make sure your home SID/NID are correct and that under security you have the correct user/pass info for 1x and EVDO. I'm sorry, I don't know what these are for CellSouth.
*EDIT* Per a PM exchange with Avalaunchmods: Also the pri for android is the base of radio.img and some things are not utilized correctly if the pri is wrong. It's possible for some carriers the PRI is more important than others but I can tell you this, I've tried FIVE different PRIs on my Hero and never had issues with any of them. The only times I've had issues are when an RUU or performing the factory reset have messed up my EPST programming.
Exactly same i flashed 2.02d from Fresh and i lost Data in almost all ROMs comming from ERIS and Sprint Based (Damaage and Fresh)
Then again i Settle to 1.73.003 PRI came from 1.5 RUU but Data is working only in 1.5 and not in 2.1 ROM Strange
I am on Reliance India Mobile.
APN setting?. I'm down in Puerto Rico with a company called Centennial and I don't any idea what my APN setting are and the APN view in setting is disabled. I try every way to rooted with no luck. My firmware version is "1.63.556.1" I'm planning to use the Goldcard procedure to update. Thanks in advance.
Your prl should have that information soo
Doing that should just change your software, which would be 1.5 to 2.1 without changing your apn.
Also you can update your profile and prl once in 2.1 if everything goes right that should fix it, if changed.
Also have you seen the guide for non sprint phones?
Is Centennial even CDMA? From the looks of the wikipedia page, it's a subsidiary of at&t in puerto rico

We are saying that the ruu is for cdma phones. Not gsm phones.
Dont use the RUU that you have from this certain forum. It wont be pleasant.
You have to go here for rooting and android 2.1..

actually, centennial operates CDMA networks in puerto rico.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centennial_Communications
look for it under Centennial Wireless.
follow the instructions on a different thread about rooting if on different carriers. use search.

My bad, I wasn't sure, so that's why I phrased my initial post as a question. Thanks for clearing it up.
After reading and googling Centennial and cdma htc hero.
I think if he were to have the htc hero, he would be using gsm. I cant find anything that has to do with cdma htc hero on Centennial. But numerous sites take me to the GSM hero that say compatible services Centennial. Like this one.
http://www.cellhut.com/HTC-Hero-Goo...ed-QuadBand-Touchscreen-WiFi-Phone-15971.html
When you go to Centennial.com and type a puerto rico address, it takes you to att.com. If you try to find a store and tpye in a puerto rico address all the stores are att.
And reading att's website about upgrading your phone..
I think you can upgrade your plan with a newer phone, on att's original gsm network.

I feel like an idiot...I just assumed since it was GSM in Louisiana it was that way for their other locations.
I just found the Hero he's talking about...it is definitely a CDMA Hero:
http://www.centennialpr.com/
They call it HTC Android...but it's definitely an HTC Hero CDMA.

FINALLY
hey, hadn't worked up the nerve to ask for help rooting my CDMA HTC Hero from Centennial in Puerto Rico... there's so much info to go through!
So yea, what do you guys suggest I do at this point? Should I wait for an OTA update from my small-ish provider? If I wanted to go ahead and root, should I try markachee's Goldcard rooting tech?
Thanks a lot, you guys so amazing things here!
Got any more info on this? Got a Friend that want to go to 2.1 with Centennial, but has no idea con what to do.
Hey, fellow centennial HTC Hero user here. I like my phone so far, but I was promised by centennial that they would fix the MMS issue with a "manufacturer update" which i guessed would be android 2.1 Eclair. Since yesterday I've called customer service a couple of times and the people in that country (not PR) tell me that I should do that myself...surprising...
oh yeah and I tried updating with the Sprint installer, and it stops when it detects it obviously isn't a Sprint phone.
EDIT: Just talked to a customer service representative from PR and said that when the update arrives (no date) it will be available from their website.
Backup/restore or Manual programming? Non-Sprint Rom issues, *288 not working!

I did it, but honestly I am not an expert on this and I am still struggling with some issues. A good place to start is to know what information we need to backup just in case Sprint based Roms brake phone programming. I know PRL is one of those and you can back it up with QSPT Configuration app.
Beware... some post suggest to clear DSA Server URL, do a *228, and that’s all!, but it will not work after the initial/first *228 setup from Centennial even on untouched phones, so programming will need to be manually, I think… or convince them to re-enable on the air programming for the unit... and, well that is where my problems are..
Did anyone know about how to backup and restore ALL those settings that can cause problems? i.e. PRI, PRL, SID, etc.... and of course, what to do if you didn't backup and now need to make sure you have the right setting...
UPDATE: decided to try upgrading from another provider in PR which offers the cdma hero (name does not start with a T or an S ) and a rep said their update required a phone # input (which there wasn't). Just followed instructions on the installer's attached readme and used a contact, sms, calendar, etc backup app from the market before update. Updated smoothly, reinstalled backup app and restored my contacts, etc.
Finally Bluetooth file sharing is possible amongst other nice 2.1 features!!!

ok im wondering, i want to be able to root a Centennial Hero in order to flash ROMs on it. can it be done?
---back story---
I updated my vogue from 6.0 to 6.1 and it would not turn on.
After many different attempts (and changing my radio a few times because it kept saying no radio) I got it to load with a rom from a foreign country, then I tried us cellular then sprint and all of them said I was roaming.
I then updated to a kitchen 6.5 rom and it still says I'm roaming.
---------------
My carrier is Inland Cellular (when roaming it is through the Verizon Network)
I'm not actually roaming but the warnings are quite annoying.
So my question is would changing my radio again fix it?/What radio would I use or would it matter?
In one of those updates, if you let any of their customizations run it may have changed the PRL file (roaming file). The only way to get rid of the roaming triangle would be to get one for your carrier (Inland Cellular). I would no recommend placing calls on your phone, you could be roaming on who-knows network.
I'm trying to track down a PRL for your network, but I am totally not finding one. I'll keep an eye out though. If you know a forum for people with the same carrier as you, you might want to look into getting a PRL from them. ^^;
To update your PRL after you have the file, dial ##PRL# on your phone, type your MSL (use MSLGrabber if the code is not 000000), and then hold the box with an empty file name until a selection box comes up, tap it, then find the PRL file on your phone... blah blah blah select okay. Commit the change to the phone, restart...
Now to just find one. -_-
Thank you so much!
Turns out I was roaming on some random network so I did have a few roaming charges, but when I went up to pay the charges I explained to them (the part they would not get mad about) and he said that if I bring it back tomorrow he could fix the PRL, and due to the fact that they don't tell their customers about only updating with download from their site I am not the first person to do this. Thank you for your insight TheXev!
Awesome, glad to be of service.
So turns out my carrier decided not to help... Not because I am running a kitchen rom or anything like that, but because I had an unofficial battery in my phone. (I bought it as a refurb from them and they still said my warranty is now void)
THEN IT HIT ME. I grabbed my old inland cellular titan and extracted the PRL and loaded it onto mine! NO MORE ROAMING!
Problem solved!
Good idea. I've had to do that before. You should post your PRL file somewhere online so others can download it. I don't think you can do it on XDA until you have 10 or more post.
