Hello All,
Does anyone know of a way for me to get internet/network access on my phone through usb to my pc?
This is possible on windows mobile with active sync. I want to use it like this in a couple of weeks when I go to a LAN party. I want to use an IRC chat program on my phone but won't have access to WIFI.
Whenever I search for this all I find is USB tethering to give my pc access to the phones data connection. I want it the other way around.
It's driving me nuts that I can't find such a simple feature that's been around for so long with windows mobile.
when you connect usb cable Tattoo ask you what to do, you need to choose third option: "Mobile network sharing". If you earlier set default action, go in settings>Conect to PC - here you check option "Ask me"....
all done...
That's the opposite way around. That to use the phone as a modem for the pc.
I want to use the PC's internet connection to browse on the phone.
Also don't get that option with custom froyo rom.
I could also use bluetooth PAN if could work out how to get that working.

I just got my new laptop (Toshiba M400) and am trying to set up my 8125 for tethering. I am able to do that via USB, but I would like to have that for BT also. From all the threads I have read, I should have a "bluetooth modem" if they are connected, but I don't. Has anybody been able to connect the 8125 to Vista via bluetooth and get an internet connection that way? Could you please post a description of what needs to be done?
Thanks.
TTT
Im curious as well.

Yes, I have done it with Vista. First you need to make the Bluetooth on the computer “discoverable”. Then turn on the Bluetooth on the phone and select “settings”, under devices tab, select “add new device”, once it finds the computer it will ask you to enter a password, make one up. Then a box will come up on the lower right side of the monitor on the computer. Click on it and it will state a device wants access via Bluetooth and it will ask you for a password, enter the same password here that you made up earlier. After all of that you will need to make sure the “Activesync” box is checked on the wizard. Just follow the prompts and all will work. I have done it many times since I burn a new ROM every other day. This is all I do, I don't have a "Bluetooth modem" and internet works via bluetooth.
If you have issues let me know.
i dunt know if there was a thread similar to this but anyway can anyone tell me whether u can do this or is there a program that will do this for me?
you want to give your PDA internet from your PC via USB?
Sounds kind of pointless to me, if your at your pc wouldn't you wanna just browse on that.
well the reason is...
well i want to update my antivirus database and i can't do that unless i have an internet connection on my BA( i'm using Kapersky antivirus) i don't think kapersky has definitions that are downloadable off their website so that u can transfer them from pc to ppc?
if you have active sync on then afaik you should be able to browse through it anyway, thats why you see the network icon flash up whilst it gives your phone a virtual network connection to your computer.
however the chances of getting a virus on your phone are incredibly slim
since u put it htat way im no longer using the virus program anymore

I'm not 100% sure, but I use My Mobiler and I believe there may be an option to connect to an IP address through that connection. It's also a really good program and free
Link?
u gotta link coz i would really give it a try.

i mean i have been searching and trying and NO CANT DO IT....pleaaaaaaaaaaase i need it...i just wanna know how to connect to internet using the PC,,,,
I was looking for the same: For me this worked: In active sync at your pc go to File-->connection setting. Change "This computer is connected to" to The Internet not automatic as default. Thats it. Worked for me. Diden't work on auto mode. Hope this helps
Ben
Ive been using Activesync via bluetooth for years too.

1. change the setting like what says above.. in WMC , connection setting, change the computer connect to [ drop menu ] the internet.
2. make sure advance pc to usb is enable in ppc..
Fellassss:
Did you guys check out: My MobileR
I always knew this kickass app existed but never really tried it..... till now.
The thing is awsome
If you havent tried it out you should.
My question is:
Does any one know how can you use the computers internet conection on the phone. You guys know what I mean right?
Thanks for everyones time.
Yes, i've used My Mobiler many times.
Since it requires ActiveSync connection between the device and PC, the PC's internet connection will automatically be shared with the phone.
iv'e tryed it and it works good but haven't found any sense in the usage
I have used this app for a few weeks now without many problems. i have occcasionally had problems with the activesync connection but that may b down to something else, i simply disconnect and reconnect. it's great for using with a cradle as you can download your cabs, copy to device in normal way then use mymobiler to install and test without disconnecting device. i can send texts using pc keyboard and you can video record your screen as u use it (could b good to show a developer a problem that u are having with their app). screenshots are useful when you cant get the timing right on your screencapture program.

I dont get an auto connection. Weird!
Any help fellas?
Sergio PC,
Are you using ActiveSync(on XP) or WMDC(on Vista).
In the "Connection Settings" on both ActiveSync and WMDC, there is an option to "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop."
Try toggling it and see if it works then.

Thanks gonna give it a shot.
Kick ass Vista Ultimate is my poison.
Thanks again.
My Solution
If you use WindowsXP you have to use activesync to create any sync setting..
If you use WindowsVista you have to use WMDC and to create any sync setting..
For example sync "My Mobile Favorites"
I m using it long time due problem with my ActiveSync (Firewall etc) , so I simple using the WIFI connection, In this case no ActiveSync needs...
Noticed that, obviously my phone is not in airplane mode, please advise.
mine does this when im plugged in to the pc via usb

Yes...when plugged in via usb it utilizes the internet that is available in the pc and overrides the wi-fi. Unplug the usb cable and the wi-fi should come back on without any interaction on your part.

Does it do it no matter if I choose active-sync/file sharing/internet sharing? I guess the third option does not make much sense...

I'm a little outside of my comfort range here...but...I believe the third option, internet sharing allows the PC to use the HD2 as the internet source. This is referred to as tethering. I'll look forward to someone correcting me if I'm wrong.

Bingo, you are correct
It passes your data connection over to your PC via USB, just like the phone was a modem.
but what if you want to use the phone as the internet source from your laptop? I have wifi in my house and use hotspots when available but what if I have neither available. can I use the phone to connect my laptop to the internet?
if so HOW?
thanks

If your LT does not have a wifi card get one, a using a $30 wifi card is preferable to using a $500 phone as a wifi dongle ...[/QUOTE]
But, yes you can use your phone to access the internet on your laptop , as stated before it is called tethering , it uses the phones data connection not the phones wifi connection ...
The exception to that is , if you run the wifi router app on your phone, not plugged into usb, then you can connect your LT to your phone via wifi ...
So one more time ...
Internet Sharing over USB allows your LT to connect to your phones Data connection not its wifi , wifi will be disabled.
Internet Sharing using the Wifi Router on the phone turns the wifi into a Ad-hoc access point, so your LT can connect to your phone over wifi and use your phones data connection ..
---double post ---
my laptop does have 802.1bgn built into it. so at home, it automatically connects to my wireless router. this all works fine. I cannot afford to pay an additional $30 or whatever extra per month for a few minutes of internet access that I need from time to time from a wireless card/dongle or whatever.
if I take the LT to a hotspot (starbucks for example) once again it if fine.
if I go to a location that has neither then I would like to use the phone, either tethered or through bluetooth or wireless to get the laptop to connect to the internet throught the htc phone but I just cannot figure out how to do this.
I can connect the htc and the laptop through bluetooth or by the usb tethering but it will not connect to the internet and I cannot figure out what I need to do to get it to connect.
can you help me on this? thanks

Ok now we are getting somewhere, do you have a screen that pops up on your phone that asks you how to connect?
If not goto Settings>Connections>USB to PC , then check the bottom box "Ask me ..."
When you plug your phone into usb it should ask you if you want to use , ActiveSync, Diskdrive, or Internet Sharing, if you choose Internet sharing it should goto the data screen right after that and install the driver on the PC.
It then should connect .
So really your question should have been , "How do I share my phones data connection over USB?", or something like that .
..
It is a good idea to have the other connections on your laptop shut off, wifi , lan ...
that button has been checked but it only it says the first two active sync and disc drive but not internet connections. how do I get it to ask me that?

Well, to be honest, I only played with mine Stock for about 3 hours, so maybe someone with a stock one that has played with it more, will wade in here .....
pblocal, somewhere in your start menu, you will find an icon for "internet sharing", just run that, and make sure the two options are set to "USB" and "T-Mobile Data" (or whatever your data connection is named, it should be in the drop-down list), and then hit "connect" in the bottom left.. If you're connected via the ActiveSync option, it should then feed your 3G connection to your pc over the usb cable.
looked all over for that but could not find it.
could it be this phone does not have it? that would be LAME!
thanks for the help guys but I need more....
you can find the "Internet Sharing" app in the tools folder in the start menu.
it is in misc. settings on the phone last setting at the bottom

wow! found it, sometimes the most obvious buttons are the most difficult to see. I hooked it up and for some reason it connected automatically for me this time.
thanks everyone for all your help. I can now use my phone to get my laptop on the internet if need be, once in a blue moon!
thanks again.....
ps - this post was done while using the 3g connection from my HTC, not so slow either!
I'm still running WindowsMobile until I feel confident that all will work with Android. I just plugged the phone into my computer with Android running for the first time. I got a message asking me to install the ADB driver. Being afraid it'll screw up my ActiveSync connection in WM, I canceled the driver install. 2 questions:
1. Will ADB and WM AS play nice with each other?
2. Will Windows install the driver automatically, or do I have to find the drivers and download them?
Thanks in advance.
-Bob-
dont worry about ADB thats mainly for debugging (i'm no expert but in laymans terms thats what it's for) if you change the Android usb connection to USB drive (or something like that) it will connect as a usb stick...
oh and the installation wont screw up with WM activesync... as your PCwould treat your "windows mobile" phone and "android" phone as 2 completely different devices.

Thanks for your FAST reply! Under default connection type I currently have it set to "Charge only". "Disk drive" is also listed (which I think even I understand ). In addition there are 3 other settings. Can you explain them to me?
1. HTC Sync
2. USB tethering
3. Internet pass-through
Again, thanks.

htc sync havent tried
usb tethering is to share your phone's internet connection with you pc/laptop/mothership
Internet PAss Through allows you to connect to the pc's internet connection from the phone (opposite of usb tethering essentially)
