Clean ear piece grill?

Anyone have any ideas on how I can go about cleaning the ear-piece grill? I see some flakes of string/hair, no sure what it is, or just string particles that is stuck there that I'm having difficulty removing. Should I go with the canned air route? Or do I risk blowing the stuff INSIDE the ear-piece and consequently, the phone?
Any ideas are welcome.

I've usually just been using qtips (lightly dampened, then dry), and just blowing into it with my mouth. I've avoided using canned air just because I'd be worried about damaging the speaker inside. That might not be a valid concern, but I haven't bothered finding out.

yea, same, i'm not keen on blasting away right inside my lovely toy, no matter what they say about how safe it is.

Be really CAREFUL!!!! with tweezers because they can chip and scratch off the black paint thats on mesh type grill

Cleaning the speaker grill....

Ok I'm sure you all like to keep your HD2's looking as clean and shiny as i do, however I've noticed a bit of fluff and dust collecting in the earpiece speaker grill. I was just womdering if anyone had found a quick and simple way of cleaning it? I've tried cotton buds, sellotape and air dusters but it wont shift!
Before you suggest it I've already considered shrinking myself down to microscopic size (like that 80's movie with Dennis Quaid) and removing it by hand but thats not very practical.

I use one of the girlfriends unused blusher brushes, and I keep it in the case all the time. A thick brush works best, you can grip the tip and give the grill a brisk brush.

Try one of those little usb vaccum cleaners. They're only a few bucks on ebay and should do the trick.

Yes, very annoying with all the crap that collects in the ear piece speaker grill...

usb vacuum cleaners are just a geek collectable (I would know, I have one sitting on my desk anc passively collecting dust since at least 3 years ago as it is useless for any other use )... anyway, @you who suggested pressurized airflow... don't you worry that it will somehow damage the speaker membrane?

Also while I think of it, I use one of those super-duper 'Xlerator' hand dryers at work on occasion to blow some of the dirt out of it.

Dont use a Dyson vaccum cleaner tho I sucked 4 keys off my laptop and what a pain replacing those

Thanks again folks, some strange and ingenious solutions indeed. The small brush is doing the trick but theres still some crap actually lodged in the grill I can't shift. Oh well..... at least I haven't smashed the screen or anything serious ....

I wouldn't use that!
I did this once at work on an old phone, and as you know, water likes to form in the pipes when it's not been used in a while in compressors, also you get tiny bits of dirt in the pipes which you're blasting out and through the grill like a soft sand blaster!
Anyway, didn't even notice the small amount of water blasting out until the phone stopped working and i took it apart again to see the whole board was rusty.
Wondering if it was the air line that did it I fired it at a wall for about 30 seconds and saw it forming on the wall and running down.
A quick empty of the compressors drain valve did the trick to stop the water, but I still wouldn't trust it now.
I use a sort bristled (unused) tooth brush on my HD2 now.

Try good old blu-tack.
That or use something like a pin to dislodge the bits then the brush to clear them.

A soft tooth brush may work.

[Q] Cleaning Tips for Nexus 4 users

Hey guys,
So I've had the Nexus 4 for around two weeks now and it's too well designed of a device for me to resort to using screen protectors although I will be getting a thin case soon since it is quite slippery. I was just wondering what some of you do in order to maintain the condition of the device. I've simply been using a dry microfiber cloth - usually used on my eyeglasses - and rubbing gently until all the smudges are gone. This keeps it quite clean for 3-4 days but I don't know if that period will shorten with prolonged use. Any and all tips are appreciated, thanks in advance!

I just usually rub it on my shirt. Takes the smudges off in one wipe

After I wash/dry my hands I use the edge of my palm, the coating is great so I don't even have to do that that often.

Sounds like a pack of microfiber cloths should do just fine for the future then! Thanks guys, still welcoming other suggestions

american apparel t-shirts work surprisingly well. it makes the phone extra shiny!
well it works just like a microfiber cloth.
any sunglasses pouch works well too!

I use optical wipes on my phones, gets rid of any finger grease and doesn't leave streaks.

I use the cloth that came with the Nillkin case. Works way better than a microfiber one that came with my girls mini laptop.. :/

Not fair
He guys im new and i had a question about keeping my nexus 4 clean. So when i recieved my nexus 4 i had it naked without a screen protector or case, then i decided to buy a full body xtremeguard screen protector, which was 6 dollars. They arrived and i tried putting them on the next day. They were wet installation which i didnt really like. I had to use a bowl of handsoap and water. So I installed them and tried to accelerate the drying process a little by using a blow dryer, but guess what, it really made the beautiful screen look all ugly and disoriented so i took them off and decided to keep it the way. and applied a little more water to the glass to get all the soapy residue off and dried it off a little more. The next day I noticed that when i held it in sunlight I noticed this white stuff inside the crevices in between the glass and the edges of the phone. SO whats bothering me is that i think its dried soap in there and blow drying it only made it worse. But wheat really gets me ticked off is that i wanted to keep my phone perfect and clean but that stuff is still in there and i dont know how to get it out. Its just killing me. Ive tried water, q tips, even scraping it out with printer paper but no luck. Can anyone give me ideas or help plz?? thx. IM sorry if this a very long post

Should have left the XtremeGuard on there, it takes a few days for them to dry properly and until they do, they look like a disaster.
As for the left overs, maybe a fingernail will be able to scrape it out?

Fingernail is thicker than paper. If he can't get it out with paper....Try using a needle I guess?

Oh nope I already tried that when my nails were longer and now there even more useless ha. Its too deep in there. But I guess I'll keep searching though. Any type of liquid I could use to dissolve it or something?

Not related to the above posts as such but more the actual thread title, a pair of jeans works very well. Wiping the phone on my knees while wearing jeans gets rid of everything, and no smears either. Looks like new, much better than T-Shirts.

anyone have advice on how to clean the ear piece grill? putting my nexus 4 in my jeans and pockets add lint to the inside of the grill. it annoys me. any advice on how to get it super clean and all black again?

Compressed air, but be careful not to blow it to closely.
As far as cleaning the screen itself, I use monster LCD/plasma TV cleaner I got at best buy. Its a little pricy but I've had it for 3 years and works wonders on all my phones, even on screen protectors.
I do not have any advice as far as what to do what the residue in the screen your talking about.
I have a screen protector on the screen and have been thinking about removing it lately. I had a convo with my neighbor who never uses a protector on his phones. He never has gotten a huge scratch on gorilla glass, and to be honest I rarely ever change my protector and prob sacrifice more clear screen using one vs not...

Get yourself a small camera lens puffer (like a rocket). Great for getting dust and lint out of nooks and crannys, but not enough force to damage anything nor any chemical agents (like in canned air).

my ear piece and mic is a bit dirty, I don't think air will get it out. can you use alcohol or something similar??

Cleaning HTC One

Hi guys,
I couldn`t find a topic about cleaning our phones, so here it goes.
I`m scared of using any kind of chemical before someone actually posts a good result after trying it
I assume that different parts of the phone must be cleaned differently:
1. White plastic around the phone - micro fiber towel alone doesn`t do the trick. I`ve heard that Mr. Clean Magic Erase cleans it well, but there is nothing like it that sells in my country. I would like to know if water or alcohol can be used without any harm to the plastic.
2. Aluminium parts - any kind of chemical that can clean it well ? The beats logo is awful looking after several days of use. I`ve heard that it can be removed completely with a nail polish removal . Also scared about trying it lol !
3. Speaker grills - toothbrush can do the trick, but does it work alone without any water, alcohol or something like that ?
Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks !

I've used the eraser on the white but for the back all I use is a semi damp paper towel or towel. No chemicals. It wipes off the scuffs and the marks easily and safely

What about the beats audio logo ? How can we remove it ? And anything else that works well except the eraser on the plastic ?

I meant 'the' eraser as in the Magic eraser.. being the plastic doesn't appear to be smooth a normal eraser would be a horrible idea lol
Personally I don't know how bad your phones are but a damp cloth works for me every time. Maybe try a tip of rubbing alcohol on a cloth and wiping down the plastic... as always start in a hidden area like maybe around the USB port

i switched my out of box phone with my cousin's one month used phone, so the whites are a little yellowed hence the question
damp cloth didn't do much, ill try to hunt down the eraser

Let me know how that Magic Eraser works. I am on vacations where they do sell it, but live in a place that doesn't so I'd take some with me if it works.

I clean my phone often flipping between bare back and different cases.
I only use Eye Sunglass cleaner w/ a soft microfiber towel. Applying to the towel.
To clean the speakers, I use tape.

About the logo ... yeah ... mine is awful atm after just one week of use, but I don`t care about it that much, cause I don`t like it !

Use 100-proof alcohol to clean the phone. Works like a charm.

Nailpolish remover makes it super easy to remove the beats logo. I've used it to remove all the logos on my aluminum stereo equipment. I think beats is a joke and it looks better without it.
I also clean the back of my phone with spit and whatever shirt I'm wearing at the time... The front I clean with a microfiber cloth from an eye glass cleaning kit.

From my experiences, never use anything but a damp (water) microfiber cloth to clean the screen. Any chemicals (including various percentages of alcohol) will strip off the chemical coating on the glass that makes it so smooth to slide across and sheds finger oils. As for the back, a damp (again water) paper towel etc. Has always taken everything off of aluminum very easily for me. For plastics like the sides, a 5% isopropyl alcohol solution works well in most cases. Ethanol and other cleaners can react with the plastic depending on the type and turn it yellow. I don't know what the plastic here is, but why risk it? Also mine is still fine with that. This is also what most quality lcd cleaning solutions are if you don't want to mix it yourself.
The magic eraser is pretty awesome for removing really stubborn material though. And that includes the beats logo of you are so inclined but that's because it's abrasive so it will leave a dull patch on the plastic or aluminum if you use it too often. I can confirm though that one mild use on the aluminum won't leave a dull patch. Be especially careful around the shiny champfers.
For the yellow plastic is try the isopropyl alcohol first. Good luck

Any rubber/eraser works.

I have a product called Endust Electronic, in a spray. I spray a hit onto a microfiber cloth and have used that to clean the white plastic.....works great. I use the same for the metal back, I NEVER use chemicals on the screen......very slightly damp microfiber, nothing more.

Today I replaced my M8 Battery... When I opened the phone..... See it from your on eyes. In my case the replacement of the columns covers made a huge difference.

Is it pretty easy to pop those off and put them back on without damaging the phone?

Yes, it is simple. First of all you should warm the covers with a hair dryer or heat gun. Then using a spatula easily removes them. On youtube you will find several videos. Covers I bought on Ebay.

What did you use to glue the new covers back on? Any additional adhesive?

The same can be achieved by using a tooth brush and lightly brushing on the speaker grills...
Over time sweat and dust blocks the speaker grills... just use a fine brush.
My m8 speaker volume was so bad, before cleaning, that I couldn't receive calls Outdoors without headset...

They come off pretty easy with a heat source like what's been said, but I wanted to add the note that the grills are rather brittle, and flimsy. Don't do like I did and accidentally break it in half while cleaning it. I had mine held to a table, and was rubbing it with rubbing alcohol to remove the adhesive, and it caught on the cloth, and got pulled back toward my hand (that was holding it down) folding it in half causing it to immediately break. I got careless, so maybe someone can benefit from my screw-up.

The covers come with built-in adhesive.
