How much root is too much? - EVO 4G General

I've been enjoying the Froyo ROM extravaganza since the .3 releases went out a while back. This board a great resource for customizing the EVO and the people here are terribly smart (Flipz, Netarchy, Cyan, et.al).
However, with the sheer volume of ROM releases coming out lately, I found myself installing a new ROM before I went to bed at night, doing it again at breakfast, maybe another time while waiting in line to get food on my lunch break and the list goes on.
For me, too much of a good thing was, well, too much. I ended up carrying my old Blackberry Bold2 for calls because the HTC was likely being rebooted for some reason or another.
From my perspective, I was using the phone as a test bed more than for the reason I purchased it... as smart phone
This morning, I decided to revert to stock and install the 2.2 OTA. No more fun for me, at least for a while.
I'm not sure why I'm posting this other than to say this board is insanely addictive. Good work from all the contributors, but watch yourself. You can spend more time tweaking the device than actually using it.
Good luck to all and I'll be watching for the 2.2 root, but take your time. I've got some work to do!

I was doing the same. But really, that's what makes it so fun. I do however, keep a nandroid backup of my daily driver just to make playing with new roms even easier

Your right but I'm addicted to flashing also....

So am I. I think I am heading back to stock for now. Too much too fast..
P.S. - We sound like babies.

He's on that crack... Be glad you aren't using a ROM with nightlies on ROM Manager!

oh dude, i totally know what you're saying. i get my nightly hits with cm6... it's just too addicting. i flash at night, test during the day, show off in the afternoon, play with it more in the evening, flash at night, rinse and repeat.

LOL, your story is so true! I couldn't believe how addictive flashing is until I read this thread. At first I thought it was just me and my addiction, well, what do you know?!!! lol.
One thing though. Never ever in a million would I go back to stock and possibly loose root for god knows how long, but that just me.
Good luck to you my friend and hope you'll be back in this flashing game shortly.

I totally understand. I did the same thing as you. I just installed a slightly modified 2.2 OTA that gets 45mflops and 3 days of standby. If you're going to quit now, at least flash to this for your daily:

In all seriousness i was going crazy too and my gf was going to murder me. I'm using netarchy's rom (burnt droid) which is basically just a stripped down OTA with a modified dalvik. I've been on this single rom for a record 5 days and i'm very happy with it. I will need to see some pretty convincing evidence before i move to something else.

Ah it does get addicting...

I have to say that I too was starting to feel like an addict..
However, a strange bit of luck changed my habits.. I normally plug my evo in to charge every night before sleeping.. and unplug in the morning.. normally around 8 hours of charging, even when the phone really doesn't need a charge..
So the other night I didn't plug it in (the phone was at pretty close to 100% when I went to bed) and 10 hours later (nothing but cell stand by) it dropped less than 10%..
This was using AVA's V3A and SetCpu with a profile that includes screen off : set cpu 245mhz.
So the next day I got up and was pretty surprised, left the charger off and made it throughout most of the day of light usage with awesome results.. It occurred to me, what else do I need? Why swap for another ROM.. I got everything I need.. 4g, Camera, BT etc.. and awesome battery..
Now the only thing that will make me change is if AVA's evolution V10 comes out.. then I might pick up the ROM pipe and take another hit.
ROM's is about getting a near perfect experience.. sooner or later we're gonna hit as good as its going to get the question is when will that happen? For me? I'm pretty damn close..

LOL Classic! I'm right there with you. See you at the meeting.
I decided to stick with EViO from Calkulin for at least a month and resist the urge to try every new thing that pops up. One major upside to sticking with one ROM, stock or otherwise is increased battery life. Definite improvement having stuck with one ROM for the past five days. It gives your EVO a chance to calibrate the battery properly and the consistency helps no doubt about it. I've seen about a 12-13% gain simply by wiping the stats, cycling a couple of times and then just using the phone.
I know, novel concept, actually using the phone. I was really getting sick of all the posts about the 59 and 64 and 120,000 hour stand-by times. That's like bragging about how long your new Ferrari can sit in the driveway before all the gas evaporates. Ooh, ahh.
I'd rather see how far I can get pushing my EVO to the limit. How much real world use can I get out of a charge. 5-6 hours? That's about what I got on my last six Blackberries. 7? That's what I pulled on my jailbroken iPharce. If I can grab 15.25 hours like I did the last charge, I am ecstatic AND I get to actually enjoy my beast of a phone.
Plus squeezing every last drop of juice out of this thing every few days gives me a replacement fix for my new ROM jonze!

Dammit! I got suckered. Tucking in my denim shirt as I type this. Very nice move.

Ahhh, I was in the same boat as you guys......until I found the love of my life, and I forgot about all things and focused all of my attention on her. We've been together for only a week or so, but I think we may be in it for the long run. Her name? Oh, it's Baked Snack.
I will say though, that I have done some things that I'm not ashamed of. My ex, Cyanogenmod 6, just popped back into my life randomly one day. I don't know what it is, but she gets even more attractive every single day. I just couldn't resist my urges, and, well, you know what I did. I just don't know what I'd do without them both. The choices!!!!!
Edit: Oh, and did everybody see the google press release for Gingerbread a few hours ago? Check it out here.

this phone is very anti-productive.

I thought this phone was supposed to increase productivity!
that is truly a false statement.
I've been playing with this phone for 24 hours now, and I don't think it'll stop anytime soon.
It takes a while, you will get used to what's on it, configure it to your needs and either:
a) Use it when you need it
b) Continually flash the ROM and reconfigure the device
Enjoy.

thank God I went for option a). anyway... I do agree that it's the coolest piece of pocket gadgetry at the moment. a true next gen phone/pda.
Definitely... I'm regularly getting addicted to my new toys, but the HD2 is by far the one for which the first excitement / loss of time phase has been the longest for me ever. I'm not even sure it's over yet, after 6 weeks
I'm on the other boat. Just bought this 2 wks ago. Rushed the job to get it set up to my preferred standards (I've owned Win CE machines since late 90s...so this was pretty quick).
Now, one ROM upgrade and 4 days of setup later, it's my daily machine and I'm easily used to it. Want to play more on it...but no time due to other responsibilities
BTW -- I didn't know this thing can handle Unreal Tournament!

Mine's T-Mobile USA version, so no ROM flashing for me yet. thank god...
I'd first love to get used to the stock ROM so that I'll appreciate the changes made when I flash.
Having the Data Connections on, drains so much battery, it's ridiculous.
In 1 hour, I've lost 11% battery just by sending 3 text messages, and writing 2 emails.
But when the data connection was off, and 3G off, it seemed to be doing fine.
Auto-disconnect seems to help lots.
But then I just got this yesterday, and only went through 1 charging cycle.
Guess I'll have to condition this battery for a few days before I can evaluate the battery usage.

Figures. Still haven't found a decent FPS for the HD2 yet. Oh well.
As for battery life -- yeah let it run for a few days. From reading the forums, it seems it takes the first charge for the ROM to "settle in" with the battery life...then things improve.
FWIW, I use no data connections, and I get 2 days of use out of my phone.

Damage vs. Fresh

Just wanting some opinions. I'm using Fresh 0.2 and wondering if its worth it to switch. Thanks for any response.

It's different for sure...do a nandroid of your current setup and play with damage for a while...if you don't like it, restore your nandroid back to fresh and you haven't lost any settings.

Ohh Yeah, Damage made some crazy battery improvement, dont get me wrong, I love Flipz and was using it till two days ago, and found that my battery was running as I was running stock ROM, but now with Damage, last time i charge my phone was last night 10 pm.
Right now it is 5.30pm EST NYC, and still got 52%
GPS running, WIFI, Exchange email, Gvoice, Fring, Android Community, PDAnet, and some others.
Your turn to judge.

Thats the boat I'm in. Switched from Fresh on my Hero and ever since, just...problems.
I'm sure he's got his own kick ass tweaks coming soon anyway. In the meantime, fewer sprint apps is nice.
Both are great. Try them out and make your own decision. Many of the asop like ruins are also nice and so us the froyo port. If you can live without the camera for now that its also a great alternative. Soon enough we will have much more variety.
I'd use damage but there's some problems with it I just can't get past. For now i'm just getting by with one of these till the developer from my old phone puts out one for the evo
Ive had better luck with the Damage ROM then I have with the Fresh ROM. I also think Bugless and Baked ROM's are pretty darn close to Damage as well. The only ROM I had issues with was the Fresh ROM actually
been using Fresh and haven't really had ANY issues. Curious to hear from other people about damages battery life. Is it really that much better? I'm not that happy with the phones battery life. Coming from the Hero i've used both Fresh rom and Damagecontrol from there so i know they both make good roms. I don't really like all the sprint apps, but those are easy enough to pull out with adb.

Memory leaks and no flash support (i think he fixed the latter with his last update though)
i use both i used both on my hero and will do the same on my EVO
atm im running flipz
Personally I switched from using Fresh to DamageControl. No 'huge' differences as far as battery life and such. Personally I think they are faily close to the same, other than the look of course. I liked Fresh, but I like Damage also. Cant wait til further update tho, and only both, and other ROMs can get better.
I'm done flashing, for now. I went from the Hero to the Evo and I flashed my Hero every update and tried different ROMs. I like the Evo stock cause I'm not always wonder if the "other" is slightly quicker or better on battery life. Also like it because I'm not having to reload all my apps and settings from ROM to ROM.

This is what nandroids are for. You can just save the current device and put it back to the exact way it was before.
Did Damage for 2 days and Fresh for 2 days.
With Damage my Battery life was DREADFUL, I had to recharge twice in the same day, both days.
Fresh, 16+ hours.
Same use, same apps for both installs.
A lot of conflicting posts, guess ill wait for more to chime in. Until then I'll stick with Fresh for now.
How many SD cards did u go thru with all that flashing? I am trying to be conscious of that so I dont turn mine into useless plastic.

Dropped my EVO, screen broke, bought a new one. Old one still works, not activated so couldn't test calling features, but still functions fine. If anybody would like me to test anything for them, I'd be willing to do so. I'm laid off with a lot of time on my hands, so whatever, let me know.

My exact intentions bro. Wanna keep the phone for the sake of development, and testing. Anything to make my evo and anyone elses better. Since I don't know how to develop, figured I could contribute this way.
here is something I would like to see..
turn off all radios and auto updates.. anything that makes the evo work when nothing is happening.
charge it to full..
and let it sit till it dies.
how long does it really last?
That will be cool

Aside of going into airplane mode, everything is turned off, including mobile network.. So far... 18+ hours, battery symbol drained one notch. Usage: 50% Cell Standby, 50% phone idle.
i am assuming it's unrooted. you will for sure get more than 1d 19h. (my previous test result) but i actually used it during the entire weekend for texting +calling

G2 insanely hot battery

I am running CM7 nightlies on my G2, a few days out dated because I have been insanely busy lately... But today in class my phone heated up insanely bad. Sizzled my finger on the metal back plate. I immediately ripped the battery out and let it cool. I think the battery bloated a little bit.
When I put it back in after cooling, all seems normal. The battery started out at 85% and drained to 44% during this. All I can think is that I charged it on the way home to top it off from about 50 to 85% battery, and then topped off a little more, bout ten minutes while at home. Got back to class and then it happened a few minutes later.
Also, I used SetCPU....BUT not overclocking, I had it stock speed, on demand governor, and screen off profile to 245mhz.
What could cause this? I called tmobile and they wanna swap out the phone itself because the battery is not currently bloated so it must be device related.
I am scared to let them swap it out, because I don't wanna revert my phone back to stock, and then have to root the new one. Are ALL G2's rootable? I don't want to risk getting a new one that can't be cracked

That makes me feel better, if I have to replace.
They were going to call me in 20 minutes after I started charging it during the initial call, but they called my wife's Vibrant which never rang, I just got a voice mail notification They left message, and I have no way of calling that particular rep back in technical without going through the entire process over again But, it's still charging, went from about 35%-80% and it's not hot at all. I'm just very confused how this is an isolated thing.
I'm about to be gone from home for 5 weeks, and need my phone, Worst timing ever for this

I'm just wary to change the entire phone out and keep the part that scares me into the new one. If I have a problem, I'll call them. It seems to have been just that once. I'll be leaving in about a week probably, and phone is vital. so I hope I get this figured out.
Do NAND backups swap to new phones? Like just NAND this one how it is, and stick it onto my replacement? Or does it backup things specific to that exact phone?

Either the battery itself is fried, or some SOFTWARE you're running is responsible. Swapping out the phone itself is pointless. Try a WIPE and see if the problem doesn't come back. If it does, replace the BATTERY.
I didn't read if yo ugot it fixed, but check your battery status... liek what's been using that. I had that one time and like my email app for example used a **** load... I reflashed it and started it from new and it's fixed now.

Yes, except that sometimes these hacks can cause problems, so before concluding that the hardware is defective, it is important to return the software to a more natural state and see if the problem goes away. If the problem is present with the hacks and not when without, then it is reasonable to conclude that there is a correlation between the problem and the hack.

For the record, tmobile concluded that it's hardware, not me *can't exactly say I have it fully rooted/modded* and the only reason I called them was that my wife used to work for verizon and it was a known issue that a certain battery style/make/whatever was known to have this exact issue. So she told me to call and ask if it was some known problem that I could tell them my serial to identify if my battery falls under those conditions. They said since it wasn't still bloated by the time I called them, it must be the phone. I talked them out of sending me a replacement... that I'll see if it comes back and immediately call them lol.
I haven't had the issue come back, I think I'm on Nightly 3, and I'm about to flash the latest but I want the battery more charged before I do so. I got like 3x the battery life today than I did the other day.
For whoever asked, I haven't tried MIUI, looks pretty interesting but I'm quite a die hard Cyanogen guy lol. I wish it came to the vibrant
THE GET RICH QUICK SCHEME:
1. Keep phone.
2. Keep using phone the way it is.
3. Induce it to blow up.
4. Sue HTC
5. ? ? ?
6. Profit
I DON'T THINK YOU NEED THE QUESTION MARKS LOL... remember the "droid x that blew up while I was talking on it and it cut my face/I smashed my droid x I want a refund trolol" guy?

Holy Crap this thing is fast

Just got my Atrix this morning..and am loving how blazing fast it really is. This thing has more horse power than any phone I have ever owned..
I'm coming from a tricked out Captivate OC/UV to 1.3 and it pales by comparison..
I'm not just talking benchmarks....but while watching full hd movies..I can pause and fast forward right to where I slide it without any hesitation at all...no pixelation..no stalls..no FC's...no lag at all...I love it..
I don't have it rooted yet..and no custom rom yet..have to wait out the return period first..just in case it goes bonkers..but I gotta say...anyone on the fence about getting it..you really need to look at one..
I can't wait till I get to oc/uv this one..just to see how much smoother it really can be..

Haha I remember you from the captivate forum anyway im loving my. How's your battery so far? When I got mine it would drain with in 3h now since I rooted etc it jumped to woopiing 16h with sync and data on the whole time.

Just ran across your post and thought I'd share my impressions on the battery. I just picked up my atrix last week after returning my infuse 4g. My battery is a beast; this morning I pulled it off the charger at 8am and now its 1:46am...I am still at 50%. I am a heavy user and I am definitely surprised how long the battery last me. I am also 100% stock running gingerbread. (Also have juice defender running). If I had my infuse still and pulled it off the charger at 8am it would hit the 50% mark by 12pm.

If you like it now, you are going to LOVE it after you take time to mod it.
But then again - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've also got to chime in and say this is the best stock android battery experience I've ever had. Lasts all day with moderate usage, with over 60% when I go to bed at night. Even with heavy usage I'm not running low. I don't plug it in at work like I would my nexus one, and I only charge it in the car if I'm running navigation.

That's kinda wild. Many have complained about the big dropoff in battery life with Gingerbread compared to Froyo.
Interesting that a couple others here seem happy with battery life on GB too...

Well...considering I was getting fair life with my Captivate...this one just blows it out of the water...so I think I am getting pretty good stats so far...
I had 9 hours of showing this thing off...I watched 1/2 of Transformers in HD...made 5 phone calls..8 text messages..downloaded 8 programs..played 3 different games and surfed the internet for about 20 minutes..and I am at 60%...so...I guess it's way above average... ?
I'll charge it back up..and see if I get the same amount tonight at work...but I got to say...Moto did right on this one for me..and I am loving it...All the guys at work are miffed...only 2 said I should have held off for the SGSII...and I just laughed...
Mac
With all the complaining going on, it's always nice to see people that have everything working and working well.
I am personally extremely satisfied with my self modded stock 2.3.4. The only thing that kind of annoys me is occasional lag of Motoblur. I might just try the Touchwiz port posted somewhere around here while I wait for CM7 final.
Go and install CM7 beta - you'll **** your self with how fast it is.

I'd laugh too, the SGSII apparently has absolutely atrocious battery life. They put it up next to an Infuse 4G with similar usage and such and the Infuse 4G took the cake. I think the Infuse's battery life is horrid, if the SGSII is worse I'll stick with my 30+ hour Atrix!!
Great to hear you guys are enjoying your new Atrices! As for me, i got mine the first day it came out luckily since everyone was so hesitant on getting it! As for the battery life, when i first got it, i would get 16+ hours on heavy phone usage over 8+ hours and with continuous wifi and data when i wasn't in the house.
Only when i started messing around with it by flashing different psuedo-roms did i notice that the battery life was shortened dramatically, so heads up to you new guys, dont forget to wipe your battery stats everytime you flash a new rom!

Got an Infuse and loved the size of the screen.
Had it for a few weeks and thought the size began to become annoying for things like my car cradle, pocket, etc. but I thought it was neat.
Wife's upgrade become available and she didn't like the size of the Infuse, so I told her to get an Atrix cause of the power (was Infuse, Atrix or Inspire and the Atrix made the most sense).
We got the wife's phone on Thursday. I went home, got her a different launcher, set up the stuff she would like on her phone, etc. She loved it. So did I.
It made my Infuse feel like it was running in slow motion. I played with my wife's phone for literally 20-30 minutes setting it up for her.
The next day, as soon as I got off work, I took mine back (had a week left in my 30 days), got my Atrix and (after having to take it back and get a replacement as my first one rebooted constantly) haven't looked back.
I can't believe this thing.
I was talking with a couple guys at work that had them..they got them when they first come out...they had battery issues too..but..I have had other phones with bad batteries before...and just this year .and went through 2 on my Captivate and a new charger...so..If you got one that the battery doesn't last long on..go get a new battery for it..Many folks over look this..and blame custom roms or the phones themselves for bad battery life..Just a FYI for those who have had bad luck with them..
Mac
I recently bought a used Atrix and it had 2.3.4 already installed on it. Coming from a Captivate, I was immediately impressed with the blazing speed of the device. The first day, I ran the phone hard. After 14-hours it was down to about 20%. The display had been on for over 3-hours and I had more than 2-hours of phone calls.
Simply awesome. BL is unlocked and rooted but rom is stock.
