I recently noticed a small screen defect on my Evo, in the upper right corner the screen is bad. You can see the defect when the Evo reboots w/ the Sprint Logo (white background). I've called Sprint and they told me to bring in the phone and possible fix the problem. Question is, my Evo is fully rooted and running OMJ 2.2 froyo rom.
Should I unroot my Evo before I take to the store? Or just take it and see?
JB
Technically it voids the warranty, but my Hero was rooted with a DC ROM and vanilla lock screen and they fixed my button and screen dust. I'm sure it would be the same with you. If not, just load a stock rooted rom on there and take it in, they probably won't check if it looks stock. And if they say anything, just tell them it's not software, it's hardware (if I read it right).
Thx. omj looks like stock. ill take it in and see what they say.

When I try to wake my phone from standby the screen lights up half way then becomes interlaced and sometimes gets filled with bars of color. If I keep pressing the power power essentially taking the phone out of standby and putting it back into standby the phone will eventually wake up from it's slumber and everything will be just fine until it goes back into standby again.
SO, before I scrap the phone I was hoping the wonderful people on this forum would have a magical solution. I'll post a vid of what's happening tonight when I get home if needed.
BTW
my phone is running
cyan 4.04
Danger SPL (I think that's what we're still calling it)
apps to sd on
refer to my post and see if it's kind of the same thing.

Well it's similar but not the same. Mine does sometimes go completely white but not often it usually displays half the screen for a second and then goes completely black with the backlight still on. Mine happens whether I press any buttons, slide it open, or any other way to take the phone out of standby. My phone has been doing this for awhile now, how long I'm not entirely sure it's just recently become an annoyance that I will no longer put up with.
I've tried using a new battery and a new sd card neither seemed to have helped. Now my only ideas are [A] the phone is just f'ed (meaning mainboard issues) it's a side effect of the danger SPL.
Does anyone know if it is possible to flash hard SPL or reflash the danger SPL on a phone without bricking it?
maybe you're having the ribbon issue as described in the link below.

To the naked eye my ribbon cable seems to be alright, a bit dusty but alright. It doesn't have that white piece protecting it but other than a little dust it seems to be fine. Should I be able to see the problem?
Edit:
I'm not sure if this will help but I do seem to have better luck waking up the phone by sliding it open rather than by pressing a button.
Edit 2:
I've pretty much given up on this phone I'm just going to buy a Motorola Cliq when it comes out. Hopefully the wonderful people at XDA will be able to root in in a reasonable amount of time.
Does anyone want to buy an unlocked rooted white g1??? It works but have to play with the screen sometimes.

Nope. It's made by motorola and this XDA is a HTC only forum, many many people have asked Flar and others to add sub-forums for other popular smartphones and the answer is always no. You will have to find either a good motorola forum or one of the android forums because I can tell you with 100% certainty they won't support it here.
I am in the same boat as you though, my screen is all f'ed up it turns on when it pleases and sometimes it won't at all. I was able to send it to HTC for like $30 and they are fixing it and shipping it back so thats not a bad deal. Also, I would advise against the cliq as its gotten some pretty bad reviews (boygeniusreport.com) and the screen is a tad smaller then the G1. If you can hold out another month or so then get the sholes, also made by motorola. It will be for high end users where the cliq is entry level, sporting a 600-800mhz processor, 512mb ram/rom, 5mp camera, 3.7" screen, qwerty slider, 8gb sd (comes with), gps wifi bt and all the other good stuff. Will only cost 199 with a 2yr contract from verizon and if you prefer gsm it will be coming to att soon after it debuts on vzw.
Ya I was thinking of getting the sholes but I thought it was only going to appear on the Verizon network. I'm also contemplating whether I should just buy another g1. For awhile there it looked like support for the g1 would be dwindling. but with the two open-source android projects gaining momentum and both being focused primarily on the g1 it looks like the phone will have support for quite awhile still.
I'd love to be able to send it into HTC to get it repaired but I don't know if it's under warranty still (I bought the phone used) Any idea how much it would cost to get it repaired if it's not under warranty??
It should be, I think it is still less then a year old isn't it? You can call them and they will ask for the ESN, worst that happens is it's not under warranty but if it is then your all set.
Well it is also rooted and has a custom spl on it .. the danger one to be exact. Would I just have to throw on an unrooted rom or would I have to roll back the spl .. and if i have to roll back the spl would I be able to seeing as it is the "danger" spl.
And thank you for all your help so far, i really appreciate it.
this seems to be a more popular thread than mine, since you've actually gotten replies. I'm not trying to hijack it or anything, but I noticed tonight, since it was my first actual phone call, since my screen went screwy, that around the ear piece speaker gets REALLY hot immediately when I picked up the call.
I completely disassembled my phone, and put it back together. Thus reseating all the connections, and that didn't help mine at all.
Current state of mine is when the screen slider is closed, the display is jacked. Either just a full white screen, full black screen, or white with thin RGB (red, green, blue) lines horizontally across it. If I open the slider in that state, it stays the same, but if the screen is locked, and I slide it open, it displays fine. If the phone is locked, but the slider is open and I unlock the screen, it displays fine.
So I have no idea if it's the slider mechanism, a ribbon, or the board. I know mine is not under warranty, plus as soon as I cracked it, I voided the warranty.
Is it worth getting a full housing + slider from ebay for $55 and take the chance that it's the slider mechanism and not a ribbon or board? or go the extra $100-$150 and just get a completely new phone?
Hopefully this link doesn't violate the "no external links" policy, since it's to ebay, and not another HTC dev forum.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, and might even help the fellow who started this thread.
Edit: When I close the screen 90% it switches to portrait, and when I tilt it, it goes to landscape and back just fine, but when I close it that last 10%, then it goes all funky.
really? nothing?
Hi, everyone. I think this is my first post to the forum, been a member for a while. I got the white EVO and battery life suxed, but I got it fixed now after rooting my device and using SetCPU + other tweaks in the forum.
I guess I should have noticed the issue when I saw BB give me a bent box. Anyways, there is a gap that looks like it is starting to grow, but I haven't confirm this. Take a look at what I talking about. The defect is between the black and white plastic pieces.

Yeah it kinda bothers me, has a clicking noise if you squeeze the back, but not always; thought this was normal, lol. Yeah if I run my finger on it it does expand and I can see it moving like a clam with a small mouth. I am just curious if this is going to get bigger or if this is normal. Also, has anyone exchanged a phone for this or similar defects.
Thanks,
Definitely exchange it

Yup, I'd go exchange it, especially since the box was already bent. Though the real issue may be that the Apple device shown in your picture tried to kill your phone while you slept.
I am going to return it tomorrow. How do I un-root it? I did'nt flash it to install custom roms, I just rooted it. Is their a way to un-root it?

shouldn't matter. rooting your phone didn't cause the plastic to separate. I wouldn't even bother honestly.
So here's the deal. My screen won't turn on probably 95% of the time. Pulling the battery doesn't help at all. The other 5% of the time that it does turn on, it looks like this.
hxxp://i56.tinypic.com/2m45an5.jpg
The lines that are blue and green at the bottom of the screen that extend about 35% of the way up are not part of the background. they are for lack of a better term lines that look like static. they move on top of the screen. In addition, the pixel quality of the parts without the lines is severely diminished.
The phone has not been dropped, put in water, nothing. It has stayed in its otterbox case its entire life. So physical damage is not possible. I have taken care of this phone like a child.
Has anybody experienced this issue? the software specs are below
Gingerblur 4.5
Faux kernel r1
I want to go back down to 2.2.2 and I posted that in the Q&A but people seem to think im on 4.5.91 when I am not.
Basically, am i completely screwed in terms of this atrix and should try for warranty? Or is there hope. booting into CWM is EXTREMELY unlikely as if I try to reboot the phone, I don't have a screen 95% of the time unless somebody can give me the exact amount of clicks I will need per item menu.
Definitely looks like a hardware issue, either the screen or the chip inside is fried. Those artifacts on top are pretty indicative. Definitely go for the warranty I would say
Just flash down unroot and odex your files. Hopefully your carrier gives you a replacement atrix!
Went to the AT&T store. I couldn't get the screen on like the other 95% of the time so they are sending me a new(read, refurbished) one.
Here is a better question now. Does anybody know if the refurbs are coming with 2.3.4 auto loaded onto them?
So today I noticed my phone had a purple blotch on it and well I thought nothing of it until I saw more of it at the bottom and when I turn the brightness up it gets even worse all over the screen on my phone. I've found one other person with this issue and they hadn't received any help, so I'm coming to you guys to ask you as to whats going on with my screen. Some information as follows, I am using the RandomRom with gingerbread and the modem is EI22.
my phone is kinda doing the same thing..
but. I took my phone in because the screen wouldnt come on..
and when I got it back the screen colors was all messed up..
I asked them about it.. and they said thats how I Gave it to them..
which is a lie.. but I didnt want to give them my phone back for another 4 to 6 hours..
I plan on taking it back.. but right now I'm too lazy to unroot my phone and put it back to stock.. then give it to them for god knows how long..
people say my phone screen looks like a old school GameBoy Color screen..
right now I don't even notice it anymore.. I got use to it.
so when ever I do decide to get it fixed.. its gonna be like I got a brand new phone..
Right, so does anyone know why this happens?

Had mine serviced last week. Its the ribbon for the screen. Covered under TEP if ya got it. At least this what the issue sound like. If you guys are anything like me, its probably from over clocking and such.

Well I didn't overclock my phone, unless the ROM I installed did that itself.
So is this covered by Sprint for free? I can't exactly afford another replacement.
It's entirely pink now and the bottom itself is progressing to a darkish blue blotch and slowly replacing the pink.

As long as you have the insurance, yes, its free.

Well I think we have insurance on the phone, but I'm going to run it into the store sometime this week. I'm gonna keep checking this thread though for any updated information. But on a short note... when I got this phone replaced, the left side of the screen could be pushed up more than the other side. In my experience of having this phone a few times it has never done that so I assume it's on the department stores part. But do you think it has anything to do with my issue of this funky screen?

Okay so here's an update I haven't had it replaced yet but the screen is now tinted blue with black coming from the bottom. I managed to bring my phone back to Stock EC05 after bricking it apparently. So the download mode triangle is stuck on the uh overlay of blue and the entire bottom is basically black.
I woke up this morning to find my phone had a large dark colored spot located a little above the bottom of the screen. It is very noticeable on anything not black. And at the top right, what almost looks like pixels stuck on white. This phone has been nothing but a headache. I also got the bad screen, comparing to my gf mt4g is very noticeable. Her phone has been problem free, even gets better wifi then mine with the same rom and kernel.
Question is, i did not get the warranty. What are my options?
Obviously i will unroot the phone before returning if that is a viable option. I use this phone for work so i cant be without one...

If the problem is a manufacturer's defect and within its 1-year limited warranty, they should switch it out regardless if you have warranty or not. Premium warranty just covers damages that aren't due manufacturer's defect--lost, damage due to carelessness, etc.
Also, if you don't have warranty. You have to send in your phone first before they send you out a new one, making the exchange process longer.
If they won't let you do a warranty exchange, I would say that your best option is to do a lcd replacement, if you're brave enough.
