When I try to wake my phone from standby the screen lights up half way then becomes interlaced and sometimes gets filled with bars of color. If I keep pressing the power power essentially taking the phone out of standby and putting it back into standby the phone will eventually wake up from it's slumber and everything will be just fine until it goes back into standby again.
SO, before I scrap the phone I was hoping the wonderful people on this forum would have a magical solution. I'll post a vid of what's happening tonight when I get home if needed.
BTW
my phone is running
cyan 4.04
Danger SPL (I think that's what we're still calling it)
apps to sd on
refer to my post and see if it's kind of the same thing.

Well it's similar but not the same. Mine does sometimes go completely white but not often it usually displays half the screen for a second and then goes completely black with the backlight still on. Mine happens whether I press any buttons, slide it open, or any other way to take the phone out of standby. My phone has been doing this for awhile now, how long I'm not entirely sure it's just recently become an annoyance that I will no longer put up with.
I've tried using a new battery and a new sd card neither seemed to have helped. Now my only ideas are [A] the phone is just f'ed (meaning mainboard issues) it's a side effect of the danger SPL.
Does anyone know if it is possible to flash hard SPL or reflash the danger SPL on a phone without bricking it?
maybe you're having the ribbon issue as described in the link below.

To the naked eye my ribbon cable seems to be alright, a bit dusty but alright. It doesn't have that white piece protecting it but other than a little dust it seems to be fine. Should I be able to see the problem?
Edit:
I'm not sure if this will help but I do seem to have better luck waking up the phone by sliding it open rather than by pressing a button.
Edit 2:
I've pretty much given up on this phone I'm just going to buy a Motorola Cliq when it comes out. Hopefully the wonderful people at XDA will be able to root in in a reasonable amount of time.
Does anyone want to buy an unlocked rooted white g1??? It works but have to play with the screen sometimes.

Nope. It's made by motorola and this XDA is a HTC only forum, many many people have asked Flar and others to add sub-forums for other popular smartphones and the answer is always no. You will have to find either a good motorola forum or one of the android forums because I can tell you with 100% certainty they won't support it here.
I am in the same boat as you though, my screen is all f'ed up it turns on when it pleases and sometimes it won't at all. I was able to send it to HTC for like $30 and they are fixing it and shipping it back so thats not a bad deal. Also, I would advise against the cliq as its gotten some pretty bad reviews (boygeniusreport.com) and the screen is a tad smaller then the G1. If you can hold out another month or so then get the sholes, also made by motorola. It will be for high end users where the cliq is entry level, sporting a 600-800mhz processor, 512mb ram/rom, 5mp camera, 3.7" screen, qwerty slider, 8gb sd (comes with), gps wifi bt and all the other good stuff. Will only cost 199 with a 2yr contract from verizon and if you prefer gsm it will be coming to att soon after it debuts on vzw.
Ya I was thinking of getting the sholes but I thought it was only going to appear on the Verizon network. I'm also contemplating whether I should just buy another g1. For awhile there it looked like support for the g1 would be dwindling. but with the two open-source android projects gaining momentum and both being focused primarily on the g1 it looks like the phone will have support for quite awhile still.
I'd love to be able to send it into HTC to get it repaired but I don't know if it's under warranty still (I bought the phone used) Any idea how much it would cost to get it repaired if it's not under warranty??
It should be, I think it is still less then a year old isn't it? You can call them and they will ask for the ESN, worst that happens is it's not under warranty but if it is then your all set.
Well it is also rooted and has a custom spl on it .. the danger one to be exact. Would I just have to throw on an unrooted rom or would I have to roll back the spl .. and if i have to roll back the spl would I be able to seeing as it is the "danger" spl.
And thank you for all your help so far, i really appreciate it.
this seems to be a more popular thread than mine, since you've actually gotten replies. I'm not trying to hijack it or anything, but I noticed tonight, since it was my first actual phone call, since my screen went screwy, that around the ear piece speaker gets REALLY hot immediately when I picked up the call.
I completely disassembled my phone, and put it back together. Thus reseating all the connections, and that didn't help mine at all.
Current state of mine is when the screen slider is closed, the display is jacked. Either just a full white screen, full black screen, or white with thin RGB (red, green, blue) lines horizontally across it. If I open the slider in that state, it stays the same, but if the screen is locked, and I slide it open, it displays fine. If the phone is locked, but the slider is open and I unlock the screen, it displays fine.
So I have no idea if it's the slider mechanism, a ribbon, or the board. I know mine is not under warranty, plus as soon as I cracked it, I voided the warranty.
Is it worth getting a full housing + slider from ebay for $55 and take the chance that it's the slider mechanism and not a ribbon or board? or go the extra $100-$150 and just get a completely new phone?
Hopefully this link doesn't violate the "no external links" policy, since it's to ebay, and not another HTC dev forum.
http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-DREAM-B...ries?hash=item5ad1b3cd14&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Any thoughts would be appreciated, and might even help the fellow who started this thread.
Edit: When I close the screen 90% it switches to portrait, and when I tilt it, it goes to landscape and back just fine, but when I close it that last 10%, then it goes all funky.
really? nothing?
I brought my Imagio in to get a new one under the 30 day worryfree.
The new imagio has a much less sensitive screen and oddly enough, it displays the battery up in the taskbar.
I figured it was worth sharing.
Also, does anyone have any tips on how to improve screen sensitivity? My last one was amazing.
I would do a hard reset. I got a replacement and the screen would not automatically turn off. After a hard reset all was great. Little quirks sometimes happen.
thanks, ill give that a try. i dont believe the phone to be defective because im noticing small improvements in the new one. a crisper sound, less light leak from around the screen and just a sturdier feel. while i have your attention what is your calibration data? im trying to figure out the ideal values.
I am just using the defaults, I have not made any adjustments.
I did a hard reset and changed my PressureThreshold to 900. I changed my PanGestureDistanceThreshold to 80. Everything is working to my liking now.

where do you get to these settings? somewhere in the registry i guess, sorry for my ignorance
I really think the first set of phones that were available had problems, I had mine replaced and the battery is so much better. There was slight light leakage at the buttom ofthe screen on the first phone, none on the second.
Weird
i agree, i think the first wave had some issues. it'd make sense. this second one is working so much better.
to find these setting youll want to go to...
HKLM>DRIVERS>TOUCHPANEL and youll see Pressurethreshhold
as for the the other...
HKLM>HARDWARE>DEVICEMAP>TOUCH and youll see PanGestureDistanceThreshold
The second path i listed is also where you will find calibration data.
I use PHM RegEdit.
If anyone knows some more about reg tweaks that affect the screen please share!

When I got my original and my recent warranty replacement I noticed the screen was almost "sticky" and hard to swipe and it went away after a day of use.
Someone else I know just got one and their didn't work right out of the box and needed a hard reset and then it was OK. That of course makes no sense to me.
I ordered mine the day they became available. I don't know if I can explain it but it ran pretty poorly (sluggish performance) but after a hard reset it seemed to clear up any problems. What prompted you to replace it?
There is a slight gap between the screen and the buttons that some light does leak out of. Is this cause for concern or just cosmetic? (Seeing as how I'm more or less locked into this phone for the next 2 years.)
I also am wondering the same thing.
I posted a thread on the other forum wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the screen gap.
I love the phone and noticed all of the stores demos are perfect without the gap.
Wondering if I should replace, deal with with the cosmetic annoyance or worry about the long term effects?????

I'm calling for a warrantee replacement today, I just can't take it any more. I really like this phone, but boy does the build quality suck.
its purely cosmetic no worries. i have the same gap and have heard lots of people report the same light leak in the location. its completely normal. unless you notice the the light leak becomes more severe or your screen gets a little bit of rippling (both of which i HIGHLY doubt will ever happen) you have nothing to worry about.
also, i noticed the same thing with the screen almost being "sticky". im not sure what it is, but i either adjusted to it or it went away
its not possible for them to seal in all light. the chief concern is making sure dust and moisture cant seep in. the screen is sort of like a big button in this respect. around every button there is light leak.

My first Imagio did not have any light leaking/bleeding around the edge, my replacement does. So I do have to disagree with you that there is no way around it. It may be purely cosmetic, but cosmetics is a factor in purchasing a phone. Otherwise we would all buy ugly Moto phones. So while I know for some people they will deal with it, I am calling V to get an exchange.
Ok I am looking for some advice / help on an issue I am having with my vibrant. A few days ago I started to get what appeared to be screen burn in. I could see details burnt into the screen from previous apps / emails / texts etc in the upper half of the screen. Over the next few days this burn in has turned into a giant brown blob / haze. It is getting bigger and bigger each day or two. I was running MIUI 2.3.7 for the vibrant and this is the 1st issue I have ever encountered with my phone.
I have read some about the AMOLED screen and burn in but I am confused as to why I would have burn in to begin with. I have always kept the screen timeout to 30s and never have the screen on for longer than 10min to 15min at a time while using it. I have turned the phone off for a whole day and still there. I have odin'd back to stock and still there. I have downloaded screen fix / burn in tester apps and still there. It appears my screen is calling it quits and I will need to get a new phone.
I got the vibrant when it 1st was released and my warranty is out. I don't have insurance on it either to boot so I'm out of 400 bucks is this is not fixable. The phone has never been dropped and I have always taken extremely good care of it. Just wondering if there is any hope in fixing this and if anyone has had the same issue. Anyone know what the deal is with this and if it is fixable or if a new phone is the solution?
Go down about five threads, worst case scenario you might have to replace screen. if thats the case I believe there are several ops on this and probly a youtube vid. Run every screen test on the market first, Im in the same boat different problem.
You can buy replacement screens off ebay...they're usually like $100 but its better than spending $400 on a new phone ya know. It shouldn't be toooo awful hard to install either. I'd try it if I were in your situation.

My friend is getting a new phone sometime this week. He currently has a Droid X, and told me he'd be willing to sell it to me for about 50 bucks. This includes the phone, charger, battery and extended battery. The only real problem other than a few minor nicks or dings in the case is the screen. He said he dropped it and the LCD appears to have bled or something. On the lower right corner there's a black spot with some discoloration around it, maybe about 1/4-1/2 inches in diameter. The touch sensitivity is fine, no dead spots. It's just the black on the screen. So, I have a few questions.
1.) Would a replacement screen be just fine? I've found this: http://www.amazon.com/Screen-Displa...N33K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326745234&sr=8-2. Would that be fine or would I need the digitizer as well? The glass is fine, no cracks or anything.
2.) Would replacing the screen be too much of a hassle? The touch screen functionality is completely fine. I used it myself. No problems whatsoever, except for the black spot. I'd really like a completely working display, though.
3.) I've looked into rooting it (which I would definitely do if I got a hold of it), and I've read there's problems with the latest software, which he has. How easy is this to root and install roms?
4.) Is this worth it? I have an upgrade in May, and an Eris now, so this would be really nice to hold me off until my upgrade. But is the time/extra screen worth it? At $75 total investment it doesn't seem too bad. Or should I just look the other way and not even bother with this?
Thanks in advance for any help or insight you guys might have.
You would just need a new LCD.
Replacing an LCD screen can be intimidating for someone who has never done it or anything like it. There are videos you can watch that will take you step-by-step, though.
There are no problems whatsoever with rooting the device. The latest firmware can be rooted in about eight minutes or less.
Whether it's worth it or not is up to you. My Droid X has two of those spots and it doesn't bother. I can say that the Droid X will give you plenty of roms to try out, and if you do successfully replace the LCD, the phone's resell value will be ~$120.

I've watched a few videos on how to do it and it doesn't seem too bad. I feel I could do it.
Thanks so much for your input. I believe I'm gonna get it then. So, hopefully by the end of this week I'll own a Droid X. Even if I don't replace the screen it'll be a huge upgrade over my Eris haha
Black Screen
Mine was doing the same thing its dead pixels in the display. I took mine to verizon and they replaced mine for free next day air!
I replaced the LCD on my DX myself using a youtube video, the only thing you need is a Torx wrench set and plastic pry tool. I thought it was totally manageable but my only caution is watch out for certain screws that hold the screen itself in. On my DX they were overtightened by the factory resulting in stripping. I had to take a special pair of pliers to loose and remove them.
Anyone having issues with ghosting on there v20?? Any fix if so r is it Rom related. In on vs995 weta Rom 5.0.7 7.0
I'm starting to have issues with image retention on mine.
I'm stock unrooted.
I wonder if this is covered under warranty.. it's not super annoying but still.
I am having a curious issue with the second screen. Under bright light or sunlight, the top right corner of my screen starts to flicker. Well, the brightness increases and decreases. At the beginning quite slowly and then at a higher pace. However, when I'm indoors it doesn't seem to happen, or at least not too foten.
I've tried with and without automatic brightness. I have also tried installing Lux and the issue still persists.
What I realised is that the flickering comes from the backlight of the second screen, and if I disable it, problem solved. I might Have to give it a hard reset and hope is not a hardware problem.
Has anyone experienced the same?
I posted something similar a while ago on this topic. On my left side of the screen I could see what seemed to be screen burn or something. It would be a yellowish tint that would display the keyboard and part of a screen from the app. But it seemed to be the same app everytime. I never found a solution, I had to turn the phone in for a different reason. The ffc just stopped working and would freeze my phone up.

I haven't tried to take the phone to see if it can be fixed, but I have done some research and after reading many posts of people having either the G4,V10 and V20 most have been honored under warranty having their screens replaced but the problem comes back, some people claim having their screens more than one time.
I think I can live with it.. I don't wanna risk having the phone scratched or damaged somehow by the person making repairs (I like to keep my phones in mint condition) and I have a Huge OCD problem lol
I think joining XDA is an indicator of having a degree of OCD
Although I'd class mine as low I'd not be happy with the retention exhibited in those pics.
Thankfully my V20 hasn't presented any inherrent problems so far, just the odd temporary ones that happen when modding, but they're soon remedied.
Since @emdroidle gave us root for the H990ds its been great having the chance to open it up and explore more of its potential.

As far as I've read this is just a quirk of these LCD screens that LG uses on their phones. It should go away pretty quick as the only time mine shows up like that is when the screen brightness is all the way or very bright for like 5 or 10 minutes. Mine goes away after 5 or 10 minutes.
Download sfilter from play store activate it at 10 % and image ghosting will go away ?

I was looking into the Warranty as well and just read that it can take up to 4 weeks to inspect and repair a unit, so no mobile for maybe 4 weeks or more and I'm not even sure they will accept the retention as a fault of the mobile itself, but give me the blame for it as there are some minor surface scratches from normal daily use.
So it seems the warranty is pretty much to the bin and reading stories from others about sending there phones with issues does not really make me want to send it back either. Who knows how long, and if declined giving me the blame, what a waste of time it has been. feel like iv Wasted enough time already.
They told me to make a full factory reset, which would of cause not solve the issue at all as I already knew - but I did it and sent the video of the retention afterwards - then I was told to look for scratches and I send them a video and 2 pics of what I could find and now being pointed out that maybe if they find out it is from damage that it just might be send back. Damage... Got to give me a break.
I'm not even sure what they would do with it if they accept the fault - would they begin to toy around with it or would they send me a new phone out of the box.
Is it worth it or not... I'm thinking...
For a +500 Euro phone - retention/ghosting should not happen and yet it does. First phone I ever experiences this issue.
I think I'm on the Whine wagon at the moment, sorry guys - just a little annoyed.

I did ended up replacing my phone, not under LG warranty though I paid 60 bucks to Sprint to get it swapped. I thought it was better than sending out my phone to LG and wait weeks..
Convenience was the what made me toss the 60 bucks for a new unit.
Though a month later I switched to T-Mobile and upgraded to the V30+
They paid the rest of my installments with Sprint which was half the cost of 2 V20's and also got to keep them.
I use my V20 as a multimedia device now.

Nice - seems like I'm not going to get much from the warranty on the screen issue and still not sure if I should send it back as I'm afraid they do something stupid to it. Well, if my phone melted down at some point I would still buy an V20 in replacement. Battery and SD card is just a win for me even with all the phones faults. Just so sad that LG did not fix a better screen for the V20 in regards of getting Ghosting/Retention.
Anyway - I just tried one of the fixes I found without jail breaking the phone and it does help a little but far from solved the issue at all. I have ghosting/retention all over the screen now and most likely just going to get worse over time as it has from the beginning of it.
I think the image retention is a bug. It randomly happens on mine. At first I thought it was a crappy screen but then it went away. It will even show dark image retention like using xda. And most of my retention around the inside 1/4 of the screen.

Sadly did not work here. Still have ghosting. 20% won't do either - il try 30%.
Ok I was getting ghosting which has been getting worse and wore the past month but in the past 2 weeks its been getting really bad on both displays, ontop of that my phone was dying in 20-25% range and going up to 100% charge just to drop like 10 minutes later to like 50% probably just the battery idk
I sent my phone in and here is what they marked on the warranty page
Symptom: Software failure
Repair: Download new software
I honestly hope they don't think its because I wasn't on the latest version of android because I kept putting it off or i'm gonna be pissed, especially since my warranty ends 3/18/2018 and these 2 issues have slowly been getting worse.
Hi!
Here is a working fix if your device is rooted.

so is this an LG LCD specific issue ? I am just curious when I switch phones should I consider AMOLED / OLED or stick with LCD but maybe a different vendor ?

The culprit behind this is low contrast with high blue-output or cooler color temperature. If you are rooted, you can easily tone down the blue channel by a count of 20 (out of 256) and all is good. Also you don't have to use the phone as maximum brightness all the time, the screen itself is way too bright even for the least level.
2ndly, this ghosting is temporary and develops over time of use. It goes away for LCD.
OLED screens suffer from the permanent ghosting aka burn-in, though its coming over time is delayed by quality and improvement of the manufacturing process. Honestly, OLED's have higher saturation, more vibrance, higher contrast which makes them appeal to human eye but it comes at a cost.
