GPS Google Navigation, need too mutch power !?! - XPERIA X10 General

Hi there forum users...
I have discovered a big issue with my X10i.
When i use the GPS it drain my battery even thoug i bought the S/E car-charger only for that reason (to use the gps in my car)
It seems to me, that the phone SHOULD be able to at least maintain the same amount of "battery left" (not drain the battery any more), when using the GPS with the car charger plugged in, but for some reason even the car-charger don´t give enough power to run the navigation system

Hi.
I recently went a 400km trip with Google Maps Navigation also using the SE Car Charger, but in my case the battery power has risen. Are you using newest Firmware Version?

I have discovered the same thing, using a 3rd party car charger. Sometimes it would just stop charging... It seems to correlate to times where the battery was getting hotter then usual, so maybe its a "feature" of the charging controller to prevent battery from overheating... I was on 020 firmware then, havent tried it since I upgraded...

Same issue as the OP today, with a nokia car charger.
Lost battery power despite being plugged in. Battery also hit 55C, and it's not like I'm in a hot country, I'm in scotland!
Those with success running nav, what model of charger do you use? If it's unknown what's the output in mA?

Mine was doing the same thing (Stops Charging) until I pointed and air conditioning vent up so that it would slightly cool the phone. Then it ran nav and charged slowly the whole time.
It just gets too hot with the screen on fulltime and all of that running.

There is a battery failsafe where it will not charge if the temperature is over a certain degree. If you want ti avoid this, place the phone in a location it can have air from the air conditioner blowing on it.

HD2 & GPS (common questions)

Hi everybody!
Could someone having the HD2 answer these questions:
While using the device's GPS over longer time (>1 hour), does the device get as hot as the HTC Touch Diamond? I'm asking that question, because on Diamond after some hours of using the GPS (charging cable in car plugged), the device gets so hot, that the battery doesn't charge any longer. And suddenly your device gets off, although its plugged for charging through cigarrete lighter.
Are there lag problems like with the HTC touch diamond?
Thanks for your replies!
Chris
GPS is one of my primary uses for my smartphones. Over the past 2 years, I have used a Diamond, Diamond 2 and now the HD2. My main GPS software is GMXT.
Yes, in the case of the Diamond, overheating was an issue with extended GPS use. It was significantly better in the case of TD2. Although I have not had the opportunity to use the HD2 on GPS for extended periods, I would guess it would be better than the TD2 - in terms of heat. I think it is a simple case of better dissipation of heat - since the body surface area have gone significantly larger from Diamond, to TD2, to HD2.
In terms of lag, I believe all smartphones will have some form of GPS lag, given its in-built GPSr. However I`m glad to say that the HD2 is extremely fast in getting a sat lock; much faster than the other 2 phones. And a 4.3" screen? It`s very legible when mounted in your car.
Yeah I used GMXT on my nokia 5800 and now on HD2 and for me HD2 is the best phone for gps because of the large screen, good gps processor and it has quickgps. Gmxt on HD2 displays position very accurately during navigation. A little heat issues but none so severe like the diamond.
I was using Garmin mobile XT on HTC Touch HD. It overheated it so much that the screen stopped responding. I had to be serviced afterwards.
HD 2 moderately heats, (but no problem at all) I guess the stronger processor has to do with it.
Something to consider:
The HTC car charger used for the older phones, with mini USB, had an output rating of 2A. While the newer HTC charger for the HD2, with micro USB, has an output rating of 1A.
Thanks for your replies!
So as far as i understood it correct, it is possible to use GPS with the HD2 endless while charger cable is connected in the car?

I already used a 600mA charger for the car, heating is the same as with a 1A charger...

I don't understand the logic. HD2 has a 1GH processor, while the HD has only 500Mh (half of the HD2) -> HD2 should get much hotter. But as far as i understood now, thats not case...
I'm pretty sure the heat has much more to do with the battery being constantly charged than with cpu usage...I guess a way to find out would be to use the GPS for one hour without charging (provided that the battery doesn't get drained before the hour is up
and then again one hour with the battery being charged and compare heat.
OK, I try to explain the known situation of my/the HTC Touch Diamond:
Using GPS (with IGO) about maximally one hour ist possible. Device gets verry hot, but thats no problem. But using GPS for a longer time (more than one hour, what's not verry unusual) forces you to charge the battery. Normally you won't start plugging the charging cable while driving. So i plug it in before my drive. Normally you would expect, that in that case the battery never gets empty, because it's permanently charging (for examle like a notebook, which's battery is in and is connected to a power source). But the problem is, that after some time the device gets so hot, that the emergency mechanism of the battery stops charging to prevent battery damage (or even explosion). The reason why the battery of the Touch Diamond gets so hot is, that the Processor is directly above the battery.

You're right charging heats the battery up. In combination with a already heated battery through the processor and considering that in summer the temperature can be high and even more heating up the battery by charging... after some time the mentioned battery protection mechanism prevents further charging and after some time the device gets off because there is no more power in the battery although it's connected to a power source...
Because of this issue and under consideration that i'm driving a lot and neet a Mobile GPS device which i can use even for 24 hours, i'm thinking about buying the HTC HD2. Therefore i need to know if the device gets so hot, that the battery stops charging after some time by using the GPS?
Can somebody definetly acknowledge or deny this?
Well, I have had no problems so far relating to heat. I have had problems with current consumption - I have a 500mA rated charger/fm transmitter... was fine with my old Mio, but after ~2min of iGo8 usage, HD2 warns me charging voltage is too low (sure, if too much current is drawn, the RC oscillator of the DC voltage regulation circuit gets out of proper operation). Use a decent charger and you won't have problems.
I was running the HD2 with Glympse for around 7 hours this past Wednesday and it was working perfectly the whole time. It was plugged into the charger constantly and while the device was warm it was no more warm than after a prolonged webbrowsing or gaming session.
Could be that using Co-Pilot or something similar would stress the CPU more than Glympse did but I doubt we would run into any issues of overheating either way.
IGO and Battery charge
1. If you use the IGO when the battery was fully charged before (green light) the HTC will work without any problems.
2. If you direct your aircondition to windshield and cool the HTC it will work fine.
3. I have TYTN II and HD2 and both off them have the same problem with battery charging when using IGO (without a work arround that I described above)
I used my HD2 with IGO8 constantly for 3hrs whilst on a long drive. I had it plugged in with charger the whole time. Whilst it worked fine for the journey, it did get incredibly hot, almost too hot to touch! and when I closed IGO8 the phone was very unresponsive and lagging constantly even though nothing was running, so I ended up switching it off for a few mins to cool down. Worked fine on restart.
Using GPS causes freeze
I am now using energy ROM
radio 2.07.50_2
everytime i use GPS, the device just freeze and the only way to restart is to take out the battery, if it did not freeze, I cannot lock up on any satellites, problem still present after flashing another ROM/Radio/HardReset
any solutions?
hd2
same story.. before HD2 I've had a Diamond that after half hour of charging + GPS it was very hot and it wouldn't charge. On Leo I've noticed that if it's charged 50% and I am plugin to the car charger it still gets hot , I charge it for about 1 hour (trip duration) and after 1 second I'm plugin it out, the battery drops from 100% to 83%.

Nexus One Discharge Rate w/ GPS

Any of you guys ever use the Google Navigation w/ N1, while plugged in to the car charger and find that it's still discharging even if it has the charging icon? Like the charging rate is less than the discharge rate.
I've used it in the car for hours, must be plugged in for me, otherwise it would be dead very soon. Mine gets hot as hell with the gps on while plugged in and driving looking at the screen.
I bet it's possible to achieve a negative rate of charge with enough stuff going on inside the phone.
I like it better than the tom tom though.
I have experienced this. I got to work and, despite having been on charge all the way there, my battery had depleted. 100% to around 85% on a 40 minute journey.
However my car cigarette lighter socket is extremely temperamental, and so it frequently looses connection. In the case of my N1 I was hoping this was the problem, rather than the phone. I can have the car repaired!
I have had phones in the past when it was possible to achieve a negative rate of charge (Samsung Omnia using internal GPS and HTC Wizard using bluethooth GPS). Particularly fun was the fact that the Wizard won't charge from a car charger when it gets too low. This left me STRANDED in the middle of the US.
Navigate uses alot of juice because of the GPS.
The phone can only charge so fast. If the usage is faster than the charging rate then obviously you'll get a slower charge or a depletion.
It's most likely your car charger. It is probably only pulling a small amount of power. There are some 1000ma car chargers you can buy that should work better.
I also believe the official car dock from Google will keep it charged too.
It definitely depends on the car charger and your settings.
My first car charger supplied 500mA (I had it lying around from some other piece of equipment I had bought). I did an experiment with the screen at 100%, navigating, and streaming Pandora. I lost something like 15% of the charge in 45 minutes or so.
I now have a 1000mA charger (just a couple of bucks at monoprice.com). What that same configuration, the battery goes down very, very slowly. If I don't run the screen at 100%, or if I turn off the screen during long stretches between turns on the highway, the Nexus One gains charge instead of losing it.
This may be of use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=669643
go plug your nexus into the car charger and go to settings, about, and see if it shows usb or ac and you will figure out the problem. it prob will say usb which means its only pulling 500 ma rather than the full 1000 ma that it should be. my car charger pulls the full amount and it can actually charge the device during navigation.

Charging Problem with Navigation turned on

Hi,
I have a navigation software on my x10. everything works fine but it seems that this programm needs so much battery that the charger can´t charger the battery.
With navigation turned on and charging the battery is still getting lower and lower.
I have a self build car charger in my car with 1000mA but it seems, that it´s not enough.
Have you any suggestions, how to solve the problem? Is there an app to change the cpu usage for the navigation to e.g. 60% instead of 100%? Or is this only possible with rooted phones?
Thanks.
Same Problem over here.
My only solution --> 2G instead of 3G and turning off W-Lan.
In that way (with GPS and Bluetooth active), the phone at least charges very slowly and doesn't drain the battery.
I had turned WLAN, BT, 3G off. But my battery was still not loading... Maybe I have to switch from 100% Screen brightness to automatic. I will try it the next time...

But the charging symbol shows up?
Did you shorten the Data+ and Data- Lines on your selfmade car charger?
I guess, you build it, like i did:
I took a 12V cigarette lighter to USB adapter.
Then I broke that thing apart and soldered a (micro) USB cable directly do the USB jack.
To make it working, I had to shorten the inner two lines.
Otherwise, the phone didn't charge at all.
Then I glued / taped / bubblegummed the whole thing an threw it behind my radio
Or did you build an other solution?
I build it myself, not broken a charger, and yes, it´s working (data is shorten), but it´s not enough to load the battery during navigation. If I turn navigation off, my battery is charging as usual.

Nice one
Uhm.. what about rising mA a little further?
I've no clue what max. should be.
Probably you know?
I've also seen USB Chargers with 1500mA.
But I dunno, if its a good idea.
Phone + Battery would also heat up a little further...
Another Idea:
Maybe there is a couple of Apps running at full load in the background?
Take a look around in this forum.
Especially at the "helix launcher" and the "battery life issues" threads.
You can also download the App "SystemPanelLite".
With that one you can search and monitor the running Apps and their CPU consumption and so on.
With "Task Manger" (the one made by Rhythm Software) you can set up a auto kill rule.
Hope, that helps...
I have also tried to charge my phone with my car charger left from Omnia HD and the phone is not charging ??? HTC Desire is charging but X10 is not. Can someone tell me what could be the problem ??
Tnx
@damirbusic
The Problem is, that the two Data Pins (2 & 3 - the two middle ones)) must be shorten. Then the X10 is loading...
@McKebapp
I´m tried it with helix launcher and have some applications auto killed and all tasks closed. But it's still not enough.
It´s possible to charge the Li-Ion Batteries with 1500 mA. That will be my last solution. Don´t want to charge it with 1500mA due to overheating, specially in the summertime...
I don't have this issue at all, weird

@UserX10:
Uhm... that is strange after all...
Which Navi-SW do u use?
I use "Sygic" for onboard navigation.
Normaly I use Sygic, too.
I tried Navigon, too, but the same result.
Both Apps draining the battery more then the charger is loading...

Really Strange...
Which temperatures do you have to deal with?
My last Idea: Maybe some overheat protection, that limits the charging rate?
By my one is the problem defently the temparatur... when i hold me phone in to the airstream from the aircooling then does the phone charging works. If i let the phone just on the right side of me on seat the it doesnt charged. But the symbol on the phone say the is currently charging... with the tool batterygraph can i see, thats isnt true...
aso i can reconized that the phone is hot.. realy hot.. extremly when the sun does shine on the phone.. the only solution is for me, to hold the phone from time to time at the airstream or i let the phone down in to the footweel, where does the sun not shine and a airstream flow around...
The akku is the warmest thing. without the cover, it works better.. i thnk the akku has around 45°... when is hot..
tested with navigon..
Hm... that´s possible. I will try it the next time with holding it in the airstream... Maybe that´s the solution.
I've got an windshield holder (dunno the correct English word).
While I'm driving open with my convertible, I set the airstream to the windshield (demister setting, but without heat), to cool the Phone a little down.
(If the Car is closed, I usually drive with activated A/C at 19°C - 23°C depending on my mood and the frozen girl on my side )
My Phone never exceeded 40°C.
So, this really may be the solution.
BY shorten the middle 2 pins... do you mean "short circuit" by joining the pins together in some way.
I have the same issue - I have the car charger from my old samsung omnia but it doesn't charge the phone and using any navigation software drains the battery very quickly
Jepp, short circuit the both two middle pins, then it will work.
For information: I tested today the charging with power supply.
780 mA is the maximum what the X10 takes. Tested with empty Battery (in Idle Mode and Apps running + WLAN + BT + GPS). Same result.
So a 1000 mA charger is fully sufficient.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great work!
What's your opinion about your battery drainage?
Do you really think that the phone, running at full load, will suck more than 780mA to prevent charging?
Or is it really an overheating prevention?
Something I realized today:
I drove around for about an hour today.
We had 31,5°C today.
The phone was placed in its windscreen holder directly facing with its backside to the sun.
I drove with closed top A/C at 23°C.
At the end, when I was at home, the App "TempMonitor" showed me 56°C at the battery, that still was charging.
On weekend I'll try pushing the limits a little higher.
Empty battery + Navigation + open top without any A/C.
I hope my phone doesn't melt away

Battery drains when charging

Hi, came across something strange this morning, when i took my phone off charge ot said 91%, but i always take it off at 100%, so i plugged it back in and now the battery is at 86%. Any ideas people?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I read somewhere that x10 has an auto disconnect function.. if your battery reaches 100% it wont charge further until it drops to 90% i think.. also check if the temperature have gone too high.
dial *#*#4636#*#* and check battery information..
I checked it, temp was 40c :S
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
not only does it not charge if you plug it in when over 90% (unless you power it down, then plug in. it will turn on and charge up to 100%) but it also turns off charging while plugged in. this means if you are listening to music, or streaming something while plugged in it will still lose charge until it hits 89%, then it should start to charge again, or if you plug in over night you could wake up to 90% charge depending on when it hit 100%. this kinda bugs me but i have learned to get around it.
you might have an app running in the background that caused your battery to run low and the temperature to rise. if you installed anything new recently try uninstalling it and see if the charging cycle fixes itself
For me is the same so far...
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
I noticed something similar go this but at lower power levels.
From a charge (starting around 8%) I found that even while plugged in,me playing with the phone caused it to drain battery faster than it would charge. So I left it alone for a while, then experienced the same issue around 50%.

Same problem here too. :-(

i get the same problem too, but only when using my car charger. if i try to use google maps as a sat nav, the battery drains rather than charges. a real big pain to be honest, means I can't just use the sat nav features of the phone when ever I drive.
hi I also have the same problem however to add in to it also i noticed that battery is not charging they way it use to be i am using the stock charger that came with the phone and i have noticed that since i have updated it to R2ba020 the battery does not charge , i mean earlier i use to get it charged within 4 to 5 hours and now it just get like 40% charged in the same time.
anyone has any idea.
I am experiencing the same issue. sometimes the phone charges very slowly. And as soon as it reaches the 90% mark the LED turns green, the status says charging(AC), battery icon has that charging mark on it. but it does not charge any further, rather the battery starts draining. Once the charging went upto 93%, but thats the best it got so far. I guess it has somethng to do aith the battery temperture. what is the temperature limit if any one knows.
Okay... starting to get really agitated at the battery now. Charged it overnight for over 8 hours, and woke up to my phone at 72%. That's just inexcusable for any cell phone, smartphone or not.

Do ypu guys think it could be the 020 rom? has anyone checked if the 023 update is avaliable from seus? Ill try it tomorrow. But tbh this is really bugging me now, great phone yet there is always an issue......:'(

yesterday I charged it through USB. at 90% it stopped charging and started draining. unpluged the phone and repluged it after 5 minutes and it started charging and this time it went all the way to 100%. today I charged it through AC and it chrged to 100%. I think its working OK now. The only difference is that i installed Battery Indicator from market, but am not sure if that solved the issue.
I have the same issue with my phone after updating to the 020 firmware.
It will charge to a certain point and the power will drop off after that. It will never reach MAX.
This is Bad.
Not sure if it's related, but I upgraded to R2BA020 (Rogers) this weekend, and now whenever I tether via PdaNet my battery drains at quite an accelerated rate (15-20%/hour). Under the stock Rogers ROM this wasn't the case, and though the battery would drain while tethered (more power usage than was gaining through USB charging), it would be around 3-5%/hour.
I checked and the phone is receiving what appears to be a proper charge via USB, but I'm not sure if it fills to full or not.
It almost seems to me like 020 messed up how much capacity the phone sees the battery as holding. I did fully discharge the phone last night.
I'm using the 023 rom now. Completely skipped over the 020 rom so I can't compare the two, but in my experience, the 023 rom rooted seems to drain more battery than the 014 stock rom.

I have the same issue but i tracked down the problem.... its something to do with the usb socket on the phone i think.... When i plug it in sometimes starts charging sometimes it doesn't... but if i push the usb cable gently a little more in it starts charging again.... i think the usb socket is a little to big... and cable doesn't stay in place... most of the time if i touch the phone or the cable while charging it stops right away so I think I'm right....

If that's the case you'll want to RMA the phone. It's not normal.
I had that happen with my old iPAQ 910c. Eventually, it wouldn't charge at all as the USB port had become so loose. At that point I had the phone replaced by my carrier.
the socket is not loose its just too big i think ... doesn't move at all...

Yotaphone 2 not charging

Hi all,
Since the Lollipop update my battery life has been pretty terrible, and the device seems to have run much hotter than previously. The battery hit about 16% by 5pm today, so I plugged it in as normal, just as the update claiming to improve standby battery usage popped up, but the phone wouldn't acknowledge the cable being connected. I've tried different cables, different plugs, tried connecting it to my PC etc and nothing. The battery hit 1% and the phone switched off and is now dead.
Since the battery is not removable, I guess a warranty replacement/repair is my only option at this point, with all my stuff lost.
Anyone got any bright ideas?

You could flash the latest update via download mode (which would save you from the power hog that is Lollipop), but if the device outright refuses to charge, even from the wall outlet which gives you more power than USB, then you are out of luck.
It's always possible that the phone has been somehow damaged, but I do not necessarily believe that.
TLDR: see at bottom of post...
Since the (initial) Lollipop update, I've had pretty terrible battery life, too. I do happen to have a couple of games that exert a great toll on battery life, and what's strange is that I remember, in the pre-Lollipop days, being able to run the game on my Yotaphone plugged to a USB charger and have the bettery recharge, slowly but steadily. Since the update, I've noticed that the phone, plugged to the very same USB charger, would continue to drain the battery instead of charging while I played the game.
The funny thing is that I decided to install the game on an Android tablet so that I coud keep playing while making sure that the phone's battery would get topped off when I'd leave my desk, and the tablet (LG G Pad 8.3) has shown the very same behavior (i.e. the battery depleting while playing plugged to the USB charger), so I strongly suspect that it's a Lollipop issue more than a Yotaphone issue.
I've read somewhere that Lollipop, amongst other "features", exhibits a bug where the data connection will not time-out as it should, so the device actually remains with a more or less permanent live data connection, contributing greatly to reduce the battery life. Give that the aforementioned games are online games, I'm more than ready to believe in the existence of such a bug.
TLDR: if the battery dies completely, it can take quite some time for it to reharge enough to power-up the device properly. I'd leave your Yotaphone connected to a USB charger for a whole night, for instance, and see if that helps. Trying another charger (preferably 2 Amp, instead of the normal 0.5 Amp delivered by a USB cable), and/or another USB to micro-USB cable (preferably a short one, the longer it is the less efficient it is, generally), and see if that changes anything.
If that still fails to le the device restart, you're certainly out of luck and should contact Yota for a replacement (it is certainly covered by warranty, new as this phone is).
Hope this helps, let us know if you can bring it back from dead-phones-land!
or maybe some contacts at the usb port are brocken. did you try a qi wireless charger?
