[Q] Battery issues: Please inform - Touch 3G General

I have recently found that in the past couple of days, if I charge my battery to full it will lose charge, and reset itself, exceptionally quickly.
I can have a full charge one minute, my girlfriend can call for ten minutes, and then the battery will die; when I turn my phone back on, instantly, the light will flash and the 'battery low' symbol will appear in the right hand corner of the screen; the strange thing is, when I leave the phone for ten minutes, or more, the phone will suddenly come back to life again, and start working as usual; as you can imagine, quite an annoying situation, especially when your girlfriend thinks you are constantly hanging up on her........hahaha
I have taken steps, and ordered a new battery, but I'm unsure if this is the issue, or whether or not it is the original orange rom that is the problem. It'd be of much help if someone can inform me on this issue, whether they have experienced it before, or, if they can give me any steps to change this..it'd be much appreciated.

I've also removed the plastic casing surrounding the phone, just incase the phone is overheating.

hi
1. how old is ur phone may be its more than a yr old and its time for a new battery mine is around 2yrs and the battery is draining fast but then i gave it to my wife whos usage is not much and its ok for her
battery life is something u cant really comment on some get great life some get not all that good life mine was quite good for all the usage and flashing i did
but im sure ur new battery will give u better battery life i dont thing theirs any thing wrong with ur phone this as per my experience thats all

In response
The problem that I have is that it only occurs when I'm on the phone; the phone conversation will last between 2-5 mins and then just cut off and reset; the phone works perfectly fine when I'm doing any other task- I can stream programmes on myplayer, etc. So, all I can do is wait for my new battery and hope it's a battery fault.
I bought the phone second hand, so the battery and the phone maybe more than a year old, so I just have to wait and see. It just seems a bit random, especially since the phone was working perfectly about a week ago. It seems like something has affected the battery, or something that won't allow me to make or accept any incoming phone calls.
Oh, and thank you Haree for your reply.
Regards,
Nick

Battery life on XDAIIi

Hi All - Did a search but couldn't find much about any 'battery life' problems with this device.
I'm experiencing poor battery life on my new XDA IIi. This is my second machine (o2 replaced the forst one due to poor battery lifery life and dead pixels on screen)
I just wondered what others are experiencing...I tend to have the phone switched from 8am til 6pm. The signal strength is good and I have wifi and bluetooth turned off.
Here is a typical set of figures for the battery through the course of my typical day
8am 100%
9am 84%
10am 75%
11am 61%
12am 50%
1pm 41%
2pm 32%
3pm 19%
4pm 11%
5pm 6%
6pm 3%
O2 say that the battery is at fault...but they've changed the battery twice and the unit once, and it's much the same. My guess is that something is draining the battery, but there's nothing special about my set up as far as I know. it's running a 1 gig SD card...but I took that out to see if it made a difference - it doesn't
Even with the phone switched OFF for extended periods of time, the battery doesn't seem to survive the day - I certainly cannot get to 8pm in the evening without having to charge it up.
I just wonder if the behaviour is fairly normal! If someone else out there is able to offer me some advice, or better still, some comparable figures, that would be helpful - just so I know it's not just me!!! ))
Alternatively has any one got any suggestiosn as to what might be draining the battery? (I'm always in a strong signal area for the phone)
Thanks
Hi I also have an XDAIIi.
My battery seems to be a lot more stronger than yours :?
If I don't use my XDAIIi at all, it can last about 4 days on standby, by this I mean phone on, wi-fi and bluetooth off. I have installed a LOT of applications on it and nothing seems to drain the battery.
My backlight is on full, my SD Card is always in.
If I use the phone say for about 30 minutes every night, then it lasts for about 3 days, still as the set-up above.
I find that if I am constantly using it, it will last about a day.
I am probably being pedantic, but as you probably know, rechagable batteries, in particular Li-Ion. Then they benefit from being run-down completely and leaving dis-charged for about 12 hours, then trying to turn them on again, (i.e. soft re-set) and then leaving them to turn off (almost instantly) Then whilst the XDAIIi is in it's "dead state" put it on charge using the mains charger and leaving it charging for about 3-4 hours. Then take it off charge and turn it on again.
Batteries don't like being half charged then run down a little then charger again.
Also the complete run-down time of a battery will only reach it's fullest after a couple of run-down and full re-charges.
This is what I do.
Hope it helps.
lydiachris
ps. the strenth of your signal should not make any difference. I am also in a strong signal area.
Battery...
Wow! Yours seems much better than mine with batteries. I just can't figure out what's wrong here and its very frsustrating - new battery..new XDA2i seems to make no difference, so it MUST be something I'm running...but there's nothing running in the background at all...very strange
Thanks anyway..at least I know it IS possible to get better battery life
S
Just out of interest, what mAh is your battery which came with your XDAIIi.
Mine is the standard 1300mAh
Lydiachris
ps. write me a list of what software you are running.
pps. Kettering??? Very near me Peterborough!!!
Battery woes...
MIne came with a 1300...but I bought a spare via the O2 shop that came with a 1200 :?:
I've got hundreds of progs on the XDA. Do you mean a list of ones that are running on startup?
Thanks
PS USed to live in Werrington!
do you have bluetooth or wifi or both turned on all day ?
is the pda on all the time or off and only the phone on ?
is gprs turned on all day ?
IR is it set to recieve all incomming beams?
how long before the backlight turn itself off ?
how bright is the backlight set to be ?
many many factors
Battery troubles
do you have bluetooth or wifi or both turned on all day ?
Both OFF
is the pda on all the time or off and only the phone on ?
Phone scheduled to be ON between 9 and 7pm
is gprs turned on all day ?
..Nope
IR is it set to recieve all incomming beams?
..Nope it's Off
how long before the backlight turn itself off ?
..1 minute
how bright is the backlight set to be ?
..about as low as it can go
As you can see, I've switched OFF most things to get drainage down to a minimum. As this is my SECOND device (o2 replaced the first one - same problem) and I'm trying out a second battery...my deduction is that it *MUST* be software related. I may be wrong and I'm hoping someone can point me in a different/new direction
I had a lot of hair when I bough this device - now I've very little left
Make sure lock all buttons is engaged, second set turn lcd off after 30 sec, third turn off device after 1 minute and you should be dialed in. If this does not work, preform a hard reset then repeat process. Do not install any additional apps/progs! Now if it works try installing one proggy at a time and test the device. It is most likley that there is a program running a daemon that is killing your XDA-IIi
Mikee
One more note. If you do a hard reset, which if I where you, I would, pay attention to the setup screen on the hard reset. When you see the O2 personal user corporate user screen, preform a soft reset with your stylus immediately! Then you will not get the O2 garbage and Icons.

hi
just got a xda2i and my battery doesent last long also my car phone charger wont charge it up quickly enough when its being used i took loads of stuff of but no difference.

Thanks Mikee
Hi Mikee
Thanks for your advice. I'm a little uinlcelar how a hard reset will help. This is NEW machine, I only got it last week. How does a HARD reset help the bettery management?
Make sure lock all buttons is engaged,
Done
second set turn lcd off after 30 sec,
Done
third turn off device after 1 minute
Already switches off after a minute
and you should be dialed in.
ehhh?
not sure what you mean

There is a fault with your device - under Consumer Service Guarentee you can return and have it replaced immediately as these goods are definetly NOT fit for purpose.
Mind you, you should hard-reset and double-check, but I'd say you've got a lemon flavour there.
Tkae heart, if you're the only one then it should be easy to fix!
My XDA ws the same when i first got it ... i'd deffo agree that the battery needs to be "optimised"
after a week or so you should notice a difference.
Heavy use of mine, ie listening to ,mp3s all day will take it down to about 15% (9 till 4 ish)
I have WIFI , bluetooth off
screen to the lowest brightness
power off after 30 seconds
[edit]
I just thought ..... You dont have the "Turbo mode" on do you ?
Battery on XDAIIi
Hi Guys - Thanks for your advice. What I find hard to believe is that this is the SECOND device where the battery life is c***. All my instincts tell me it's NOT the device - this is the second one they've sent me - nor the battery (as I'm now on my THIRD one)
I really want to avoid a hard reset because of the time taken to reinstal everything afterwards. I lead a very busy business life :? , and I just don't have the time to 'start from scratch'
...but I guess I will, if enough people tell me a hard reset will sort it
i did a hard reset but it didnt make a difference and when i spoke to 02 they were very quick to exchange it and when i spoke to the guy he said i should expect it to crash every so often like windows does on a computer i disagreed with this abd explained my xda2sw didnt crash like this one did.
regards kevin
stevep, in that case why don't u just make a complete backup of ur IIi, then perform a hard reset..
Sometimes the apps installed are the cause.. Also take note that switching to 'Turbo Mode' all the time will drain the batt pretty fast..
Battery drain - hard reset
Thanks for your reply - it's appreciated...but I don't understand how a hard reset helps. Yes, I can back it all and restore it, but surely that'll just put the problem back on the XDA (if it's an app thats causing the drain)
Can anyone explain (from a techy point of view) how a hard reset MIGHT corrrect the battery drain problem
Have you checked your turbo button under start, settings, power and then the processor speed? if you set it on turbo, it will eat up the battery VERY FAST. If else, I am using one and I am Happy with the battery life.
I've actually tested it with turbo 'on' and 'off' and I didn't notice much difference either way. It's actually on 'standard' currently

mda restarts while im on the web, then says no battery

my mda says that it has like 93% battery life and while im scrolling around on the web after 15 minutes the phone just automatically SHUTS OFF and restarts saying low battery life and then it dies again. whats the deal with that? what do i have to do to fix this? its sooo annoying. any help will be greatly appreciated!
you might be out of RAM..
close some apps that are running..
IE eats up a bunch of RAM..
Looks more like a faulty battery to me! OUT OF RAM or LOW RAM never will give out the message: LOW BATTERY.!
If you have the chance to try another battery (maybe you own a second one or a friend might have the same device) just give it a shot ...
i tried with a different battery. the phone still reboots if your on the phone or interenet for longer than 10-15 mins. whats up with this?
I have EXACTLY the same problem with my phone. This phone is onlt 1 month old and was a replacement for a previous MDA that had SD card problems...
I have the exact same problem. When I don't use WiFi the battery lasts for several days. But when I use Wi-Fi in 10-15 minutes it restarts and shows battery very low.
I have noticed that if I connect and immediately disconnect the charger, it shows that there is a lot of power left in the battery and the phone will actually last a while. It definitely can't charge it so fast, so somehow its getting confused about how much battery is left.
Can anyone help with this, please?
I just did a clean install of the official T-Mobile Rom, and the problem is still there. The phone keeps restarting.
Help please.
right there with you guys. ihave and 8125 and they same thing happens i am just glad i have a spare phone. Bad very BAd.
Guys
Junner2003 is right. The problem is a failed cell in the battery. If you don't put the wizard under any load it will last for a while however as soon as you ask it to do something (like use the internet) it dies real quick.
Get a new battery (not a second hand one that you know nothing about) and the problem will go away. I had the same problem a few months ago and went through all the same issus mentioned on this forum but a new battery solve the issue once and for all.
Thanks for the input, jt_armstrong. I'll replace the battery and report back here. I am thinking I about getting a high capacity one like this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/2400mAh-Ext-OEM...ryZ15034QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Hey everyone. jt_armstrong and Junner2003 are right. At least in my case changing the battery seems to have solved the problem.
I got the high capacity one from ebay, and so far it has been working perfectly.

HTC HD2 Battery drainage?

Hi
Battery problem, keeps draining quickly, just by leaving it anywhere. I charge the htc hd2, after not much use... the battery looses charge? I have s2u2 installed any ideas why this would be?
In other words, battery is on 100%. I open it using s2u2 and close it, just random play aroung with the phone. Next minute you know the battery is going lower and lower in matter of minutes. Thats with no phone calls, few text, no music, no games played i think your getting the gist?
This is wierd? anyone else experience this?
Please can some help and advice in the right direction.
thanks.

Try a search as there is a ton of stuff about how to treat the battery in order to get the most out of it.
hi pa49
I have looked at soo many post on xda, but i cannot get to to the bottom of it?
1. Is there any post you might note of, that could possibly put me in to the right direction?
2. also any place you can get extended battery (not the big fat one lol)

you may want to install battclock and check what0s your cpu usage, also disable s2u2, check differences, and whatnot... the only way you can find if it's a software problem or not is by checking with a clean rom.
Usual old boring advice, backup and hard reset, test with nothing installed, if there is the same problem of very high drainage, it's basically a good chance you need to send it back for warranty
I have exactly the same problem. Suddenly yesterday my phone's battery drained and I found my phone switched off, out of nowhere. I charged it for 3-4 hours, and then played some games, the battery was left at 85% and when I woke up today, after 6 hours, it was off again.
So you are suggesting to perform a hard reset and observe the way the battery drains?
Ok, First get the battery working at max capacity by charging it non stop for at least 2 weeks. Whenever you can and wherever you can for as long as you can.
Once you have done that there is a battery monitoring capability built into the charging circuits. You could then allow your battery to drain to cuttoff and then recharge to full again which will accurise the power remaing readout. I never bother with this step as I just use the phone and then recharge as soon as I can again, but, if it's important to you then go ahead, but, don't continually allow the cutoff point to be reached as this will damage the battery.
Now you have maximised the capacity of the battery see how it performs and assess whether you need to take further action.
Installing apps to mem card will eat battery.
Some say leaving apps open will drain the battery. I'm not too sure, but, it's good practice to close them any way.
Finding a clean and pared down cooked ROM will save a lot of power, but, you will have to do your own experimenting there.
After that you could invest in a spare/extended battery, however, I would suggest an external rechargable power pack (Have a look at the juice bar solar pack as it will recharge itself without needing a power socket or USB port (although you can use them!), purely by sunlight. Another advantage is that if you change your phone you still can use the pack with your next device and they will also charge many other devices!
Good luck!
I have my new hd2 leo, and battery seemed to be the main issue for me cause it couldn hold 1working day... but as everybody told its nessesery to charge 1 week to exercise battery for its full potential.. but i did some improvements, did the registry thing with dissablepowersavings dont remmember where found that, and instaled wmpowersaving, for control of 3g 2g data, using 2.12 radio rom, witch is more stable than 2.08 cause i use hd2 for a lot of browsing, and 2.08 was freezing my device.. 2.12 is stable and seems using much less power, i can feel less heat in the back of the case.. tried android... but that was not intterested me... i dont need those 1000ds of apps i need to browse the internet using iris browser.. and now battery easily can hold 2 days with some wifi 3g browsing.. and few phone calls some usage of camera.. witch is poor in dark conditions... so i think battery life is 2days ... and control the 2g 3g networks, turn off location service, turn off data connection.. and the battery for today evening is still 72% after 10 hrs of few phonecalls and a bit browsing with wifi.. some gps navigation i dont even think to buy expanded batery cause i dont like the BACK BIG CASE ... Also i wonder how much power is nessesary to run Micro SD built in card reader... because its a pitty to have 180mb internal memory for progams... if it had 2gb then u install everything in the memory and dont use the sd card reader witch i suppose will save couple of hours of battery.
this issue has been well documented..imo the stock rom battery life is awful lasts up to 24hour on casual use for me..there are cooked roms with better battery life or you could invest in a bigger capacity battery from htc or third party ones on ebay
There is a known issue with the HD2 and microsd cards, when the microsd's filesystem becomes corrupted, causing battery drain.

Ok, so I did a quick test, I turned off the radio just to take that out of the equation.
I ran for two hours, first hour with SD card out and then an hour with it in.
From the log, you see that I am about 6 to 7 mA up until 0945 and then it started to cycle, I dont know why, the phone was in standby the whole time.
I put the SD card back in at 1016 and opened explorer just to access it once.
the cycling continued for like 30 min then settled back down to 6 to 9mA.
So, it looks like the currnt is a few mA higher with the SD card in, but I have no idea why the phone was sucking over 150mA in those four to five reading bursts when I was not using the phone.
What do you think?

Battery problems

I have the T8585 HD2, recently ive been having troubles with the battery...
I was getting intermittent battery drain for no apparent reason, the back of the phone would get very hot. Searching I found that this had something to do with the SD card not being formatted properly, did this and havent had this same issue since.
Last night I charged the phone while on my PC, was approximately 80%. I wake up this morning and the phone is dead, wont turn on. So i plug it in to charge again and then it starts to do the soft reset loop thing, I just left it go for about 6 or 7 loops and then it seemed to settle. I look at the battery capacity and its 0%.
This explains why it was dead, but why the hell is the battery draining to nothing over night? I did not notice it getting hot last night and it was dead cold this morning. Battery terminals are not bent as some others have suggested as a cause for this.
I really like the HD2 but this battery thing on top of the poor capacity for the this type of phone is really starting to disappoint.
I have not messed with ROMs yet, so its running the following that i got with the phone...
ROM 1.66.707.1 (76641) WWE
Radio 2.06.51.07
Any ideas on this would be helpful!!
Same phone, same software
I have exactly same phone & software, I upgraded rom to this 1. But have had no problems with phone at all. Few soft resets at 1st, but then started deleteing messages, shutting down programs in background, no problems since. Hope you get figured out,,
I'm having the exact same problem. I've had the phone since November and, although the battery doesn't last like it used to, since about 2 days ago the phone has gone haywire!
I haven't installed any new apps or used the phone any differently than usual but, after getting readings of between 15 - 20mA in standby (with Battery Guard) I'm getting on average 490mA now in standby! Crazy! The back of the phone is getting so hot that I'm actually worried that it might do the phone damage and, like the OP, I'll go to bed with a full charge and wake up with the phone so dead that I have to pull the battery before I can start to recharge.
I've removed some of the PDF files and other things that might be causing slowdown etc due to but there is definitely a problem. Does anyone have any ideas of what kind of things I should look for that could be causing this before I contact the insurance guys for a replacement?
Thanks in advance
Im having a similar problem with my HTC raphael with WiMo 6.5 Roms didnt tried if the problem exists in 6.1.
My phone is fine today, was 100% last night, 95% this morning. Im starting to think this is a software issue not hardware due to the randomness....

funny you put it this way.... its actually the other way around.... nevertheless i understand what u mean (off-topic, just couldn't resist ;-) )
when the power usage jumps from 20ma to 490ma and gets very hot the battery has started to fail - don't be surprised their qualty is hit or miss. I'm on the T8585 HD2 (1.66 rom) since November and a few weeks ago the battery would get hot in standby and battery life dropped by half. I popped in a spare battery and problem instantly went away. I've since bought a 1,300 mha battery from Mugen, phone runs great again.
Hi. Had a similar thing with the battery drain, but the last few night I have put the phone on charge as normal and in the morning I have Nealy dropped the phone because of how hot the back was. Any ideas?
Happened again today, fully charged last night, 0% this morning. Very unhappy about this, this is a serious reliability issue that a $700 phone shouldn't have.
I would suggest checking your task managers processes, I had a process - Filesys.exe that was using 98% of my processor for long periods of time and absolutely eating battery life.
Yeah i have installed battlog to see if that will shed any light on the problem...
Did u try hard-resetting ur device?
no, im trying to avoid that at this stage, I want to find the source of the problem.
Had the same issue. Phone worked very well for a few months and then this battery drain + overheating issue started all of a sudden. Tried hard reset, disabled 3g and problem continued. Finally, got my phone replaced with great difficulty and problem solved!
Anyway, check the signal strength. One of the issues could be the phone trying to connect repeatedly when the signal is weak. You can also try to disable data connections to see if that causes the problem (Disable all autoupdates like email, twitter, weather and so on).

Anyone else with this problem...?

Hello all,
I bought the HD a couple of months after it first was released and have never had this problem until about 3 days ago, where my phone has started to suddenly "die" even with ample battery life in it. When I reboot it, it simply starts to reboot then dies again as if the battery is dead, however, when I plug it into the charger, it shows that it has over half to almost full battery life. So the problem can not be that the battery is simply dying. What could be causing this problem? I have ample free main storage and program memory and it occurs even when there is only one program running or even when I'm just in the middle of a call.
Can anyone help me solve this problem? I have tons of medical programs in my phone which took forever to install and don't want to hard reset the phone, especially if that is not even the solution to the problem. Help?
Same thing happened to me, but my phone gets some water. I had to dry it and wait a month. Then it worked fine. If your phone hasn't took any water the problem must be elsewhere.
One question, it dies even if attached to the power? or only on battery?
If it dies only on battery then could be the battery not working properly.
bye
Batteries do weird stuff when they're dead. If it works OK on power but not on battery, chances are the battery is indeed on its way out. If you don't want to do a hard reset, a replacement battery on ebay is cheap and worth trying.
Hello,
I have exactly the same behavior. I changed of Rom, different build, each time running Task29, but it is always the same thing :
- when charged, phone never dies
- when on battery, it randomly dies but always when phone is awake
I think too it may come from the battery, so I just ordered a new one, and I'll keep you up to date.
Ciao,
Yea, so far it has occurred about 4 times, always when it's not plugged in however the battery meter shows alof of battery time left. I'm thinking it's the battery too, it just sucks to have to pay so much for an OEM battery. Oh well, thanks for the help everyone.
Hello,
so I received my new battery this morning.
After some phone calls and some tests...so far so good ! I'll tell you if something's change in the next days, but it seems changing the battery is the solution.
Cheers,
Mine started doing similar things. Guess I will order a battery too. Which one did you get?
Well I got the exact same one I had previously : an official htc touch hd battery.
Part number : 35H00120-01M.
I hope this one will last until I really want to change my phone .
Any more issues since replacing the battery?
still no issues so far. I am really happy because as the battery is new, my phone last much longer than before.
Same here. Got the new battery yesterday and it's back to it's old self. Now it should last me until the dual core processor Android devices come out next year.
Well it would be nice if my pnone only turned off when it wasnt on charge but it seems to just reset itself whenever it wants. it will simply turn off and start right back up sometimes not even reaching the rom load before it turns off again. It does this for a while or just simply once. I tried erasing all data off it and hoping it was something i uploaded but it could be that my battery is just no good anymore.
Any suggestions? ive been dealing with this for 6 months
I don't know about you, but I played quite a lot with my phone, trying a lot of ROM, for a while, even beta ones, and I tried to overclock it. Often the phone would heat up a lot. It may have be hard on the battery.
Right now I am using a stable rom of NRG from last month, with the new battery, and everything is fine. The phone never heat, and I happy for now.
Like Marksm, I am waiting for Android dual core phones or at least based on Tegra 2.
