For those of you curious about the speed of 4G here is a speed test i just did on my Clearwire Motorola CPEi 725...I know its not a test on the evo but it will give you an idea of what you can expect. Also this test was kind of low, the one i ran last week hit 14mbps down 1mbps up.
It's a far cry from what I get here with my Ubee modem. It'll get worse with the EVO.
I'm amazed, day 1 of launch I didn't get 4G anywhere except Chicago!
Over the past couple days I am getting 4G even in Round Lake & Grayslake, most surprising if you are aware of the area. It's relatively lower income in the area compared to the suburbs 10min South.
Around Lincolnshire I hit 3.8Mbps! I was under the impression 3Mbps was the cap, that's what I get (solid speed) when I checked 4G in Chicago.
I wont lie, I'm impressed, 4G was scarce just a week ago!
No 4g for me :<
You are lucky....
I live in Lake Forest - No 4g for me, and it's a very affluent area. Worse, I get NO SIGNAL in my home (3g / 4g, cell).
I specifically left AT&T because of dropped calls and lack of 3g service. I may have to leave Sprint because of no service....
Any idea if they will be adding towers anytime soon?
I wish there was a way to test Verizon before I switched again.
I have no idea, but hey...you've got another 2+ weeks to decide.
That does stink though, in general I've experienced good service...have you upgraded the radio on your Evo? That makes a difference.
I've rooted, and have a de-crapified build with the latest updates.
The lack of service also kills my battery, as it's continually trying to connect unless I go into airplane mode.
Major bummer :<

Call retentions and tell then you get lousy voice service. They gave me a free Airave and waved the monthly charge. Won't help with data much, with data, but works great for voice. You need a broadband connection with it.
I'm in Evanston and I've picked up 1 or 2 two bars of 4G while outside. Inside I had to get an Ariave. Speeds haven't been impressive so far, 3G actually has been faster when I've tested.
Have you tried flashing a verizon radio to your Evo? Maybe a better signal.
if you go downtown you get what i have in my sig
at my place by midway i get about 4mbps. yesterday i was testing and i was getting around 1 to 1.5 but today testing again i get around 3.5 to 4.5. maybe the weather was messing things up yesterday....i was testing while it was raining. today its gorgeous outside...
No 4G around Waukegan, IL either. Though I get full 3G coverage in and around this area, so I don't mind since data still loads pretty quick.
Grayslake has a 4Gtower - from there it's a long run south till the next. Lake Forest doesn't want any towers on their precious skyline so signal there sucks. Drives me nuts.
I ride the train into downtown from Grayslake so I've been watching 4g rollout closely - will stick with the Hero for a bit yet I suspect. No compelling reason to work around early upgrade mess and short supply. Yet.

I get about 2-3mbps at home.....so about 5 minutes from my home i wanted to show my friend how fast my data is vs his Sprint.....well my 3G crapped out at around 200-300kbps and his Sprint was in 5-6mbps range.....this is the second time now Tmobile data does this to me. The other time my friend was streaming 128kbps music on ATT iPhone while I had GPRS with pretty much non-working data connection....< this was 1 year ago, and exactly the same this year !
Spotty network connection. Happens to me all the time.
Yeah that sucks. I always read about other people getting 4-6mbs on their vibrants. In my town I only get 1-2.5mbs on 3g, in the town next to me I can get 3mbs. If I want real speed I just stay home and get 14mbs on my wifi network.
Fear the beard...

This happens to the best of us. I tried a speedtest with vs a dude who was all proud of his Evo using 4G and i beat him in my office 4Mbs vs 3Mbs. It just all depends on where you're at and how congested the network is. If it makes you feel any better, my Vibrant can smoke my Droid X 90 percent of the time.

Networks vary. This shouldn't be a surprise. Each tower is different. Different loads. Different backhauls.
2 days ago I had a friend over with his iPhone4, and I was telling him about Nero v3 on my Vibrant, and the subject of speed tests came up. So he pulls up his speedtest.net app, and happily shows me a 2.5mbps test, with 220ms ping. I'm like "hey, not bad", then I pull out my Vibrant and run a test: 4.4mbps, 84ms ping.
It only went slow because you were trying to one-up your friend.
Ive been getting edge like speed on my vibrant ever since thanksgiving day. It sometimes gets to 3g.
I finally rang up tmobile support and apparently its becuase theres a network problem with the towers....so, in 72 hours, it should be fixed by the engineers.
Before the slow speed I was getting constant 1500-2000kbps, now I am struggling to get over 100kbps, almost dial up speed
Verizon 4G LTE 22 megabits/sec download. What the heck???????????????????????????????
I am simply speachless at how fast Verizon wireless 4G LTE is.
So my friend is getting a new phone and we go on a shopping adventure. Verizon, At&t and T-Mobile all 3 stores accross the street from one another.
All 3 stores are located in Los Angeles in a verified 4G area.
We ran a little experiment, hitting up 4G phones and running speedtest. We ran speedtest a few times, and the below are average max scores
Verizon HTC Thunderbolt 20-22 mbps download every single time, and 35mbps upload
At&t Motorola Atrix 4G Max download 0.36mbps What the heck? That doesn't even count as 3G I don't think
T-Mobile Vibrant 4G Max download about 1.5mbps. Still not 4G in my opinion
My personal T-Mobile Vibrant 3G max download about 3mbps. For some reason my Vibrant 3G had faster downloads thant the Vibrant 4G every single time, and we ran the test like 10 times.
So At&t was just simply a joke. T-Mobile was more acceptable, but still not 4G speeds, and I have no clue why my 3G Vibrant outperformed the 4G Vibrant. So we ran the test on the HTC G2 4G, again faster speeds on my Vibrant 3G. Doesn't make sense.
Now, Verizon 4G LTE 22 mbps download, 35 mbps upload. NO I AM NOT KIDDING.
He ends up getting the Thunderbolt, driving around LA all day yesterday, not one single spot did the Thunderbolt go below 18mbps download, and was consistantly getting over 25mbps upload.
I am amazed, now THAT IS 4G!
Are those speeds real or is the phone reporting incorrectly? He is even getting almost 40 mbps upload sometimes. Seriously? Tell me thats just a software issue giving false speeds, because that is almost not believable!
Yep, 4G made it to my town and its amazing...just wanted to let everybody know. 3G still sucks HORRIBLY but 4G is amazing even with one bar.

Congratz man! I know they say wimax is not even real 4G but it does have great speeds. Plus you can't really call hspa+ or lte real 4G either. Good to know Sprint is still expanding wimax even with there deal with lightsquared

Awesome! I like how Sprint's still quietly sneaking out the 4G. We just got 4G in select parts of Des Moines within the last couple months But no word from Sprint and most of the Sprint customers I meet tell me I'm full of it when I say we got 4G here, lol.
ALL HAIL OTAKING71, THE RAPER OF HBOOT!!!
Any word on how far the signal goes outside of Waterloo (Cedar Falls?)
We supposedly have a 4g tower. You must have to go stand at the base of it to get a signal, though.
3g is pretty bad. But where I live in downtown los angeles. The 4g is really all over the place depending on how tall the building you are next to is. Inside my loft its very all over the place. No biggie. Just was hoping it would be a bit more stable in certain areas.

I have yet to pick up 4g with my shift. Even when in Nashville, Tn.
Nor the town I work in where there are 4g towers as well.
Stood right next to a VZW guy last night and he was telling me about his charge, he was standing there on 4g. I was sad. =*(
I'm not having much issues with 3g speeds, but I was running stock Vanilla.
I just got around to rooting last night.
Got MikShifted loaded up for now, see if I like it.
Looks like i'ma have to re-flash already, to many apps I wont use. =*(
Why do you have to reflash? Why not just remove the stuff you don't want?

You know you can remove those right? Its not like stock, if you use something like titanium to remove them, then they are gone, not back at reboot.

The signal is limited to the downtown area. Cedar Falls does not get any service from the 4G, and it cuts off right at the Fletcher exit on 218. Also it doesn't go past 18th Street Bridge and barely crosses Washington St to the west side. Crossroads has VERY faint 4G.
I have 1 solid bar in my house on the west side and its awesome. I have full signal on 218 (I assume the tower is near Tech Works).
So one day I was browsing around on craigslist and I saw a new condition Moto Photon for $250.00 ( I know, Its not the galaxy s 2) but hey its was a good price and its a nice world phone. Anyways, I couldn't believe how much faster my data speeds were!
Previously, I was getting around 200-300 kbps with the latest SRF on my Epic. I am now getting 500-700 kbps in the same location with the Photon. Its a fantastic device. The antennae on the phone is really top shelf, areas I would get 1 or maybe 2 bars with the Epic I get 3-4 with the Photon. In areas I couldn't even get data, I am watching netflix with not buffering. I really forgot you could stream Netflix and YouTube on 3g because with my old epic.... you just couldn't. Anyways I am not hating. I love the Epic. I will miss the the everyone in here. Trust me, there isn't much developing going on in the photon forums yet but I am sure things will pick up in time.
Overall I am really happy with the Photon. Just wanted to share my experience with everyone. Thanks for all the support and help along the way. Having the Epic and the support in the forums have really helped broaden my understanding of Android and the entire rooting process.
Thanks Again,
Justin
After having read some early reviews it did seem to have great antenna/reception. How is moto in terms of providing source to developers? I suppose its too early to tell how fast they release updates as well?
dunno if I buy this argument, though I do have my doubts about the Epic. I'm inclined to think Sprint has plenty to do with the problem.
I drove all over Manhattan today and whenever I was stopped in traffic - which basically every 2 minutes - I'd run speed tests for both 3G and 4G. Suffice it to say that from about Times Square up through Morningside Heights, the service is (with a few exceptions) dreadful. When you get a bit south, speeds are much better. Both my wife and I (she's on a Nexus S 4G) were able to get about 6Mbps on 4G down near the Holland Tunnel. Up where we live, it's a total crapshoot. Every so often it's ok, most of the time it's garbage. 3G is on par with dial-up where we live. A colossal waste of time.
Oh, and just for a little extra chuckle, consider this: at the moment we're in upstate NY, about 75 miles north of the city. Just ran a speed test and 3G is faster here than in most of Manhattan.
Yeah I am getting pretty consistent 5-7Mbps download speeds on 4G in SoCal. I don't have any complaints here

Moto is releasing updates for the stock rom almost every other day it seems. As of now there is no source code available to Dev's. I am not sure if/when that will happen. Right now we are just getting Pseudo Roms and themes. I haven't come across any noticeable bugs yet. Although Unlocking the Boot loader breaks 4g. In my case that is a non issue because we don't have 4g in most of Riverside County.

I am in a non 4g area so I am not really concerned with 4g speeds. My focus is 3g. I reside in a rural area of Riverside County in Southern California. I would get atrociously slow, spotty data. Getting the Photon made a huge difference. In the same location I would rarely ever hit 400 and frequently run between 200-300 kpbs I am getting 500-700 consistently. I'm just sharing my experience for others to draw on. Granted your location may keep this from applying to you specifically. But one of the things that drew me to the Photon in the first place was the well regarded hardware specifically the radio in the device.
Also Networks are different all over the place. The user load in Manhattan is presumably higher then a rural area of So-Cal. As well as the obvious building obstructions. When I was in Manhattan about 6 months ago I enjoyed my 4g speeds on my Epic which ranged anywhere from 4Mbps-7Mbps. Granted most of what I was using the phone for was uploading videos and looking for places to eat ;-) Sure its not as fast as WiMax can get but what do you need it faster for on your phone anyway? Video Streaming, Music Streaming all worked nearly instantaneous for me.
Again just my 2 cents I am not claiming to be a sprint messiah or anything. My first android device got faster data speeds too (HTC Hero). It was a big deal for me when I got my epic and noticed the data speeds were much more choppy and slow. In case this is a big issue for other Epic users getting ready to jump ship I wanted to share my experience with the Moto Photon 4g. Not to mention the Hardware is pretty sweet and its a world phone.

Lol.. well you know San Diego isn't a major city. kidding of course. I am right in between Orange and LA counties in Uptown Whittier. I have bull bar 4G inside my apartment and basically I have one small dead spot about a half mile away but it's rock solid everywhere else. I heard there's a small pocket in San Diego but I haven't heard of it working for anybody down there though.

When roaming my epic is super fast occasionally it's also fast on sprint's network. I think the 1900mhz antenna in this phone may not be so great. While roaming on 800mhz I get 1100k+ all the time.

San Diego has so many hills, not sure if they want to invest in wimax there at this moment
It's not the phone! It's SPRINT! For the last time I have talked to Sprint and they have had outages throughout different areas, mine included. My and my girlfriend, my kids and my ex all have Sprint and all have different phones. Epic, EVO, EVO 3D and Moto Photon. All were great then they ALL sucked. Issues in my area are fixed now and I have no data issues any longer and neither does my gf, kids or ex. None of us did anything to our phones to make the signal better. So for the last time, IT's SPRINT.... not the phone.

AGREED! Sprint service in my area was great a year ago and now it's slowly gone downhill. EVO 4G; Epic 4G; Epic 4G Touch; It doesn't matter which phone I use, Sprint's 3G performance is TERRIBLE.
Um, actually it's both. The Epic, (and the nexus too) have mediocre signal reception. Couple that with low signal strength and you get really slow data. If Sprint's coverage were better the weak reception wouldn't be as big an issue. If the phone were more sensitive it could deal with the lower signal strength better.
i have the eh07 modem and ecop5 rom and my 4g sucks..it hardly connects not sure whats the issue
I know for sure its the phone. nothing posted higher 3g speeds than my old HTC HERO.
I was around 2.5mb/s peaking and 1.8+ normal rate.
Now when I got the evo, the speeds were down. Epic the speeds were down. Photon speeds were down. Epic 4g Touch the speeds were up at 1.8
So my experience for fastest as follows:
Hero: fastest 3g @2.5mbs
Photon: fastest 4g upload @1919mbs
EpTouch: fastest 4g download @15.179mbs

It's not the phones! Again until about a month and a half ago my phone used to scream and now it sucks! I never had reception problems ever. Sprint has done something (at least in my area) to slow down data service. It's obvious.
Sprint certainly had outages in various areas. Common sense would say check Sprint Forums or do a simple Google search.
Phones certainly can have an effect on your speeds but not as much as a Tower.
Having both phones side by side its Sprint and not the phone....
