I would like someone to explain in detail the difference between "factory data reset" and "factory format"
You can do a factory data reset via the phone itself, or by using this code

I've done this before, but it seems like a soft reset, I want something more hard. Something to totally swipe the phone clean, and reinstall everything fresh.
So I found this "factory format" code *2767*3855#
This totally wipes the phone, and reinstalls the firmware.
My question is, will using this second option reinstall stuff like avatar, and stock programs, or does it totally wipe everything off.
can someone explain the benefits and downfalls of the two.

that didn't answer the question, I already said the first code is the same as doing the instructions you gave.
I was inquiring on a factory format, which is different.
Have you tried it(through the # command)? Or is that just what it says it does? Unless it downloads the firmware, theres no place that its stored on the phone, so I doubt it reflashes the firmware over again. I initially though maybe it would reformat and setup the /system partition, but it would need an img stored somewhere to flash it, and I doubt it does.
What it probably is, is just Androids naming vs Samsungs naming, and wouldn't reinstall any bloatware that was removed.

I did that last week, but booting the phone to recovery mode:
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Hold down the volume up and down buttons while turning the Vibrant on, which will bring you to the recovery mode.
3. Choose "delete all user data"
Once the phone boot up, you should have factory stock phone.

What you are describing is the same as doing a data reset via through the phones settings, or using the first code I provided.
However, a "Factory format" is different. I'm trying to figure out what a factory format using the second code does.

I believe what your after would involve one of 2 methods and no neither is a factory format or reset.
To completely reset the phone to stock all parts including radio and os files you need to use odin a pit file and a rom image.
If your ONLY needing to restore apps to factory/stock you can use the posted nandroid backups to restore.
Both methods are well documented but if you need help drop me a line or a pm.

How can you tell people that they are wrong, without knowing yourself. Chances are that the factory format does exactly the same thing as they described. Why don't you try it and if it does something different let us know.
I think there is a difference between the two, can factory format reinstall firmware?
Well i tried the factory format, and it did start out differently than the facory data reset did, and it seemed to be faster, but in the end my phone looks exactly as it did with a factory data reset, so i dont know what its doing differently

oh really? you did the factory format? interesting, your phone is fine?
Yeah my phone is fine, everything works... i mean as well as you can expect, still having same issues as before but it wipes everything including the sd card so you might want to backup any nandroid or titanium backups to your computer because it will erase everything from the phone and the sd card, and put it back to how you got the phone.

So it appears this Factory Format is a TRUE hard reset, compared to the soft data reset. I have a question, does it erase avatar? Does it put avatar back on? What about all the other "stock" programs... does it put them back on?

Wanna try factory format, I'm scared.
Avatar is stored on the 2GB SD card. Simply remove the card before doing a factory format and you're safe.

Just did a factory format and it deletes everything on the internal phone memory except the stock bloatware programs. It didn't touch my SD card as Avatar is still there. Seems to be a true hard reset.
I did the format and my 3G was gone. Everything else worked and it seemed the same as the factory reset. No problems with Avatar,etc. Any files I had previously altered did not revert back to factory. I could not figure out the 3G issue, though. All of my settings seemed correct but I had no data connection (no 3G, Edge, ...) Wifi worked luckily and I was able to do a nandroid restore.

I'm new to android, coming from BB. I've had my phone for a month now and have rooted, gps fixed, flashed vibrant 4, tried the lag fix, flashed gps fix, flashed back to stock, un-rooted, rooted again, flashed stock.... un-rooted....
In the end I wondered if I was getting in over my head here (I was) and maybe I needed to just enjoy my phone for what it is and stop worrying about all of this experimental stuff. I'm no developer.
So I just flashed back to stock using the nandroid backup linked on this forum, un-rooted and did a soft reset.
I noticed it doesn;t truly wipe the phone though, so now, any time I get any type of glitch I constantly worry that maybe there's some sort of residual settings hanging around... my GPS flakes out and hangs, or shows my location as "accurate within 2 meters" yet map location shows me over 3 blocks away? I start worrying, is this residual effects from flashing the gps fix?
I really don't know, and I was wondering if there was a way to truly hard reset, wipe everything and go back to exactly the way the phone was when I took it out of the box so I can stop worrying that I've jacked my phone up.
It looks like this is the way and I may give it a go once I hear more success stories (worried about the poster above missing data connections).
I'm content to wait for an OTA update, or something really solid like CM6, till then stock with launcher pro is more than enough customization for me.

I can confirm my 3G came back and the phone looks EXACTLY like it did when I took it out of the box. Surprisingly, it's still rooted, at least it still has the app. Will update as I progress.
EDIT: No problems at all. Got Voodoo running just fine after my fiasco with OCLF. Market stored all the apps I downloaded so it's just a matter of time now. XD

Im mulling over doing a factory reset to see if that will cure my GPS issues before I send the phone back for replacement.

There's the old power up, volume down, home key, select between fastbook, recovery, clear storage and simlock.
Then there's the code, *2767*3855# whih some say as well as obliterating everything, also reinstalls the firmware.
What I don't want to do, is brick the device, and I don't want to kill the firmware on there - because I just don't have any official firmware from Samsung, and I don't care about the stuff from samsung-firmwares, that's not "officially released" afaics.
So, what's the difference between fastbook, recovery, clear storage and simlock? does *2767*3855# really reflash the firmware?
Which option would you recommend?

I used the code the other day... Everything reset. Haven't a clue if that means it firmware was reinstalled, and it felt a bit fast for that (though the boot time was in the minutes).
I didn't have any issues with the reset... and also reset to see if some of my problems including the GPS issue went away.
No avail on any of my problems... GPS is still being a pain and battery life is still lower than expected.
Having said that, looks like new firmwares are starting to pop up... so these issues could be resolved quite soon!

That code will wipe the whole phone included built in storage to factory.
I used it once to wipe my phone, had no problem but make sure you back up any data as it does full wipe.

My phone was stolen a few days ago and reset. Luckily i found it, but i had backups of EasyMoney on it.
I just learned that LG decided to call the hard reset, a complete wipe. Although it is my fault i did not back up, i`m sure i might be able to recover one or more of the BAK files on the internal storage.
Any suggestions on how i could look for the BAK files?
You should be able to set a password for hard reset, so that it is not that easy for someone to ruin your day!

Sorry to hear. G2 has like 5 partitions - System, Data, Dalvik, Cache, Internal Storage. If they wiped the Internal Storage (Hard Reset?) there is no way of you getting your old files back. I don't know the reason why they are gonna do that. If you did have a custom recovery (TWRP,CWM) before the Hard Reset, you have at least the option to select which partition/s you want to wipe out. If your internal storage wasn't wiped out just try to search for apk files using a file explorer like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop.
Well this is my 1st post so first of all hey everyone
I just spent a week in Amsterdam and my phone restarted twice, different times different days and I dont remember what I was doing with it back then.
But as I landed back home I put the phone back from "Airplane Mode" and went on to toggle "Cellular Data" on.
The second I pressed the cellular data shortcut on my the phone restarted itself but this time whenever it would finish the screen would be on but fully black and sometimes it'll show battery precentage at the top but then will restart again in an infinite loop.
Sometimes it'll pop up the "Optimizing Apps" window and will go through all 24, upon finishing it will restart once more and do the same.
I tried using the bootloader and it worked (the bootloader that is) but the phone would do the same thing even after Rebooting from there or shutting down from there and then turning back on.
I contacted tech support on chat but they couldnt help past telling me to go to bootloader and reboot, said I should factory wipe when it failed.
Also tried wiping cache but to no avail.
I have no backup of my phone (wanted to do one before the flight but got lazy and I suck for not doing one sooner) since probably October and google doesnt backup my contacts properly for some unknown reason.
I already downloaded Android Studio with everything included for me to try using adb to sideload stock without wiping but its my first time and I couldnt get it to do anything at all...
I already got the official stock .gz file from the motorola website.
Anyway here are the specs to my phone:
XT1575
Everything is stock. didn't root or change recovery once in my life.
Was fully updated and had plenty of drive space (I have almost 128GB with the 64GB version + 64GB SD)
I'm really lost here so help will be very appreciated.

Start with a full wipe and if that doesn't work flash the stock image. Not sure what your question is though as you never really say. Once fixed I would unlock and make a backup so you don't have to deal with this again.

The thing I pretty much want to know is if theres a way to either backup the phone now with it connected to the computer while in bootloader or recovery. or a way to flash the stock rom without wiping which I read someone did with his tablet. Also while in recovery I noticed 2 options under wipe: 1. userdata only. 2. userdata+(insert something I dont remember here) and I was wondering what gets deleted in both? if I delete only userdata what data will remain? something helpful?
Sure you can try flashing without wiping data but being locked I personally wouldn't risk it. No idea about backing up in your state... somewhere I remember a thread on backing up without root try searching in q&a.

Out of curiosity why shouldnt I try flashing with no wipe if ill lose the data anyway? worst case wont I just have to wipe after it fails and flash again?

Well I tried turning the phone on and it took a couple of minutes before loading to a fresh start. It apparently wiped itself on its own. Managed to restore almost everything.
Anyhow the phone takes too long to boot now. Was even stuck at boot and I had to restart it.
Anyway to fix my software? Or at least check for corruption?

This is the second time I get this message. First time was on stock Android 7.0. next time, ~2 weeks later on stock Android 7.1.1. To revive my phone I had to perform a factory reset twice.
What causes this message? Is it software or hardware related? I assumed the former, but the fact that it happened twice after a reset and on a new version made me wonder...
I'm heading to a country without 3G coverage and barely any WiFi, so if this happens then, I'm screwed on 2 levels: -Loss of pictures, due to not able to back-up -Not able to reset, since that requires WiFi.
Anyone else who had this issue? Any recommendations, RMA?

In Google photos there is in settings also drive after that I believe the rest of settings will back up w/o wifi I know photos will

When you say stock you confirm that it's full stock (no root and running google's kernel) ?

Never had any troubles with random reboots.
My phone froze, got unresponsive. I had to restart, and when it tried to boot I got this message. This happened twice.
No root, standard kernel. Bootloader not even unlocked.

That's it. Storage corruption and the decryption unsuccessful is a consequence of your problem.
Sorry but that looks like a defective device.
ram/emmc/power, it's hard to find without root/twrp. Unless an update got wrong but I don't think that would show these symptoms.
First, I would also raise a PR on google to see what they suggest: https://source.android.com/source/report-bugs.html
You really need to backup your data and have a backup phone in case the following gets you a brick..
I'd actually try flashing factory images (you won't be able to flash recovery image but others yes ). Make sure to record the messages returned on your PC to see if something went wrong. The update process is a bit dumb, it goes on even if errors are encountered so even if it finishes it doesn't mean much.
Once the device is flashed, if it boots, you could try filling your data partition by moving big files using usb transfer. When its full, reboot and see what's happening.
If you are short on time, prepare the RMA process...
edit: oh btw, I'm sure people would be interested to get the information displayed in bootloader mode (power on the phone by pressing volume down)

I sent it for an RMA, so unfortunately not able to do what you described. Couldn't chance it getting this error message when abroad.
Curious though if they will grant an RMA, nothing much is looking wrong at the moment. Hope they will, because else I'm screwed.
If they don't, though, I'll see if I can get the information displayed in bootloader mode.

Same message, only I'm BL unlocked, rooted and twrp.
It happened twice. Once on 7.1 DP1, and again on DP2.
Once I get into recovery, the system is encrypted, and I can't do a thing.
I'm going to try and back up to a flash drive, and try to mount that in twrp if it happens again.

Recent Twrp now supports full disk encryption so you should be able to see your files? And even do a backup from there. Take twrp 3.0.2-3

Weird. I don't have twrp so I can't check but you should see your data. Maybe the partition needs to be mounted (I think it is by default though). No /data/media ? /sdcard is the same but as a virtualized FAT file system to be able to be access from Windows. Could be that /sdcard is empty in twrp but /data/media shouldn't.

If I understand this thread flash custom kernel like ElementalX to unencrypt your device.
I tried searching for awhile and couldn't find anything too related to the exact question. Seems like with every update coming out storage shows the system taking up 1gb more than previous. Its as if it doesn't delete previous android versions. Its gone from 2.5gb few updates ago to now 5.6gb but the android updates are no more than 1gb. Its about when I started to notice this, 3 big updates ago all being around 1gb each.
My phone is completely stock, would a full stock flash delete everything and start the phone over? Also reading the general topic a few different methods mostly for unlocked bootloader., which one is the best for a locked bootloader? I was wanting to do this anyway because I have other unrelated issues with the phone such as gboard constantly crashing and photos not storing properly/overlapping eachother in memory that seems to happen with every update no matter what.

Before doing anything rash, you should probably start by clearing cached data @ Settings.>>Storage>>Cached Data. Also booting the phone to stock recovery and wiping the cache partition may help with any apps that are wigging out. Lastly, you really cannot "flash" anything with a locked bootloader. You can, and may later decide to wipe/factory reset from stock recovery. That would wipe your data and return your phone to the blank Android version you had installed last (7.1.2?) and yes, it would wipe/reclaim space, but you can do that manually without a factory reset. Before you go down that road make sure you enable the Google backup of your account so all your app/app data is saved. If you have photos, let Photos sync fully before the reset so your photos will be backed up to the Cloud. Also note that if you decide to unlock the bootloader (good choice) it will automatically perform a full wipe/factory reset. There is a sticky in General on how to do this.

Thanks for the input, but thats something I've been trying after every update already.
I found another site with clearer setup and instructions to do a stock flash with a factory rom and not OTA. Only reason why I had an issue with not wanting to unlock the bootloader was because im on windows 10 creators and it uses powershell now. So I had to figure out how to use fastboot/adb with powershell since cmdprompt wasn't the same. Doing a flash of a factory rom indeed fixed my gboard/photo storing overlapping issue that every ota update and factory reset through bootloader wouldn't solve.
Although my original question still remains, the system data in my storage is still 4.5gb with 7.1.2, better than the 5.5gb it was but I'm pretty sure its not supposed to be that big, any ideas why every update keeps taking up more space on the phone? The rom was even 1gb being flashed on the phone and I swear I remember the amount of space it took up when I first got the phone was around 2gb.

Doing a flash of a factory rom indeed fixed my gboard/photo storing overlapping issue that every ota update and factory reset through bootloader wouldn't solve.
Although my original question still remains, the system data in my storage is still 4.5gb with 7.1.2, better than the 5.5gb it was but I'm pretty sure its not supposed to be that big, any ideas why every update keeps taking up more space on the phone? The rom was even 1gb being flashed on the phone and I swear I remember the amount of space it took up when I first got the phone was around 2gb.

I always flash a full images- not OTA... but I've always been unlocked on all my Nexus devices going back to the Galaxy. You cannot flash a full image without unlocking the bootloader but yet you say your bootloader is locked? For comparison, my untouched System is using 4.57 GB. I am running stock 7.1.2 ROM, rooted and EX Kernel.
PS...there is a toggle switch in Windows 10 settings to select command shell or powershell. It's as easy as a toggle to restore the command shell (or switch back).
