I use my car dock constantly with my X. I have my car charger connected to it so I don't kill my battery from Pandora. So today I used my gps in conjunction with Pandora. After about 20 minutes I noticed my battery indicator had dropped. I looked close and it wasn't charging anymore. I unplugged and plugged in each connection (cigarette lighter, back of dock, phone in dock). No dice. The phone did recognize I was unplugging it, though, as it reminded me to unplug my charger to conserve energy. I also tried to charge the phone with just the car charger alone instead of running though the dock. Still no dice. I got to my destination and took my phone inside with me. It was SUPER hot, but still running. I rebooted the phone and it was able to charge in my car again. I listened to Pandora without gps to get lunch. It indicated the phone was charging, but the battery % dropped a bit. The phone was no longer hot. It is now charging my phone without running Pandora or the gps. I took a trip using gps and pandora in conjunction without losing power, but also didn't gain a charge while in the dock. Could the heat have caused Android to force the charge to stop, or is the charger a piece?
I noticed the same the battery is overheating if possible put an ac vent on it. I've had this happen with my tp2 as well as my X. Sucks get to your destination with a dead phone.

Dash mount disc, don't let me down. :-( The one for my garmin let go after 3 months and my gps hit the floor. :-/
I am a ups driver we have no ac anytime it gets hot in the truck my phone won't charge I have the phone pluged in all day. I have had the same problem with all my htc phones. Battery gets hot =no charge

I don't think I have had my battery go down any, but I just thought I was using as much juice as was going in. I use pandora and gps at the same time.battery does get hot

what is a good car charger? I've seen cheap ones but I dont know if there are better more expensive ones?
I got the 2.99 one on cellphoneshop.net and as long as the phone is not hot it works great. I can watch slingplayer and have bt on and still charge. I have the AC coming out of the defroster to keep it cool.

I use the OEM Motorola one and while yes, it definitely gets hot when I am running GPS and Pandora, it does charge. Very very slowly. I definitely don't lose charge though.
I have the same charger as above so don't think its the charger.

Go to your dialer and dial *#*#INFO#*#* then select Battery Information.
What temperature is it showing when it's charging?
Its normal for the batt to heat up when its charging..but to an extent

Yes that's normal, but you said it gets very hot, and again, read my first reply to your post and tell me what you see, then we can tell you if your heating is normal or not.
make sure you turn off WiFi when you are charging the battery on your SNS
else it heats up really really fast and hot
that was the same on the SGS

i wouldnt even listen to someone at best buy even if it what he told you seemed favorable
It seems common behavior on the Nexus. My NS got up to 105° F last night (to be fair, it was under my pillow). I've simply taken to turning it off when I charge at night, but seeing as my NS is a glorified PMP (and therefore I don't have to worry about texts or other notifications on it), you might feel differently about simply turning it off.

It's interesting to note that the adapter for the Nexus S actually charges at(and I'm sure I'm getting my terminology wrong, sorry electricity guys!) .7AMP vs the 1AMP that other smart phones charges at such as the Nexus One.
This might account for the seemingly longer charge times we've had reported, and why you might be seeing increased heating from using a third-party more generalized charger. Whether or not there's any truth to the idea that it may cause permanent damage to your device, I don't know. I would greatly appreciate it if someone more knowledgable about this kind of thing would post, as I'm considering buying a second charger/car charger. In any which case, I personally take what Best Buy/T-Mobile/anyone's first level support tell me with a great big grain of salt.
google maps heating phone up
I just had a similar experience with my Nexus S getting really warm while using Google Maps this morning. I usually use Google Maps in Car Mode with traffic overlayed as I drive to and from work (~30-40 min. drive). This morning I noticed the phone got really warm by the end of my commute, which did not happen the previous 3 or 4 times I have used Maps in this same fashion. I will take nxt's advice and check the temperature on the phone next time it heats up again. Does anyone know what is a "safe" upper temperature limit for the phone or battery? I've read that higher temperatures are detrimental to the life of a lithium battery.
Other than this one time, I have not experienced any other high temperature issues with my Nexus S in the ~1 week that I've had it.
Thanks ahead of time for any help/advice. This is my very first smartphone and I am eagerly trying to absorb as much information as I can about it so I can determine what is normal/abnormal behavior. I am loving my Nexus S so far!
I don't think third party chargers are to blame. In fact, I'd go as far as to say the opposite is true. I read that the shorter data pins on the official charger cause the device to enter a faster charging state, as compared to the usb cable or third party chargers.
I've yet to feel my nexus s get warm at all... during charging w/ wifi on. Using samsung wall charger, using LG wall charger, using computers w/usb cable.
My NS gets hotter to the touch than my Vibrant ever did, but when I check the battery temperature it is never as high as my Vibrant used to get.
When charging in the car and running Navigation + streaming music the Vibrant would hit almost 125F whereas my NS tops out at 110F.

Well that kind of sucks if you're using it to Wifi tether and want to charge you SNS while you're doing it.

it depends on the usage
when i download TONS of stuff via 3G or WiFi it heats up a lot, only if i have it plugged in to the charger, else it does not heat up
However! if you check carefully, or better yet, if you take out the back cover
you will notice it is not the battery that is hot, but the area beneath the SIM card that is hot, which points to be the CPU

FWIW, I have been charging my Nexus S with the Nexus One charger (1 amp) since day 1 - I can't stand how short the stock charging cable and wall adapter were. I haven't had any unusual temperature spikes when charging at all. I don't even really notice it getting warm under heavy load - unlike the Nexus One with the aluminum casing that conducted heat very well. Edit: I also leave WiFi on with a No Sleep policy when I am at home and I've not encountered any warming issues either.
I would be careful if I ware you.. high heat is dangerous for the battery, it might swallow and even a leak if you will keep using your device constantly at high temperatures.
I Have never had any problems with heat and I have been using it a lot.
btw, I use stock rom..
Anyone else having issues with the phone when it is charging on the wall? Screen transitions get really choppy and touch screen sensitivity goes bonkers.

I've had this with CM7 as well. It's super annoying.
I've had this with most if not all Roms I've used. It depends where I plug my charger in honestly. Some places the touchscreen goes crazy some places it doesn't. Why? Hell if I know lol. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one with this problem.

I have had this problem before, but it is gone now. Could never figure out the cause...
It was never specific to CM for me. I found that at times, setting setCPU to clock up to max (not necessarily OC) when charging helped a little.
But for some reason the problem disappeared for me. Not sure why to be honest.
My phone only lags when I have the sd card mounted to a pc
It happens to me when I use one of the chargers I bought from Walmart. I think its a grounding issue.

Happens to me on Cm roms with HTC charger.
Its an issue with the charger. I have two completely differnet phones and the same issue happens on both when I use a certain charger. It charges fine but touchscreen goes to crap. Both phones work fine on a different one.

+1. Works fine with the OEM charger. But a cheap charger I got on eBay that charges a battery at the same time that it charges the phone always causes the touch screen to become completely unusable.
Not the charger. I have the same issue with my evo connected to the stock charger. It doesn't usually happen right away. In fact most times for me it isn't until charging us complete before I see a slow down.
I could be mistaken, but i believe it's a heat issue. The heat from charging the battery causes the CPU to enter a slower, low power state. This in turn will result in everything, not just the screen, becoming laggy. I've also noticed the same effect on hot days during the summer, if I let the evo get hot (like leaving it in a poorly ventilated area or heavy CPU/graphics usage), I get the same slow down.
I have not tried using setcpu but I suspect that thermal protection will automatically override user defined clock speeds.
Of course, all this is just my best guess, and I have nothing to prove it either way.

Agree & Disagree.
From the world testing I've done I completely agree that heat is a cause that can cause the phone to act incredibly slow and unresponsive. I have accidentally left my phone in the car during summer, come back and hardly anything works
My disagreement is that I do also believe that the charger/charging effects the phone. Using the stock HTC charger I get an sporadic screen, sometimes immediately and other times delayed, while charging. It almost always shows up after a full night of charging (phone could/should be warm here, right?) but the moment I unplug the device it becomes immediately responsive (heat hasn't changed).
I don't know what the root cause is, heat I think is a contributor, but either way I just deal
I believe it's due to poor grounding, which affects the touchscreen.

yep - its a grounding issue with the touchscreen caused by using a cheap charger OR a cheap cable OR a bad cable. It is NOT a problem with your phone. Get a nice OEM cable or a nice OEM charger and you'll be in good shape.

I remember when the Evo first came out there were grounding issues with the screen (hardware 0001), i.e. if you put it down on a bed or couch, you couldn't get the notification bar to pull down. I would also estimate that there are still some minor residual grounding issues still around. I get it every now and then as well, I'm also using the stock HTC cable and charger. However, that battery theory is a pretty smart thought.

and perhaps you're cable is bad. stock cables do go bad, I've seen a few people with bad cables. They can fail in numerous ways.
If it is the cable or charger, why does it not happen on the stock ROM? Temp makes no difference.
EDIT: This DOES NOT happen with the stock ROM!

Same cable, same charger (both stock), same outlet, does not happen with the stock ROM, but it does with CM7. I've just tested this quite a bit. Temperature is not a problem, either.
It happens to me after the battery hits 100% (on a non-sbc kernel) using stock cables, and stock chargers and my computer's USB for charging. It never happens on the stock kernel.
I'm not sure anyone ever knew for sure what caused the rash of these back in June/July, but I do know when I created the first FPS hacked kernel back then, it mysteriously cured some people's touch screen problems even though my modification didn't even remotely have anything to do with charging/touch input code.

I used GPS for first time with my new SGS2. I was surprised how phone was hot. I had SGS but I never had any problem. GPS program is Sygic, I used same car charger, which I used for SGS. I drove home maybe 10min and phone was realy very hot, the screen also,back of the phone. Do you have same problem or do you think my phone is faulty?
Mine after 30 min surfing the internet is very hot (next to the camera and screen on top). Also i am worried about that...

Yes this I have same, but it is still OK compare to GPS and charging.
GPS + charge is always a hit or miss. My SGS was a little better, but my HTC Touch Pro 2 got blazing hot. All depends on the device, I'm more worried about the long term effects of such temperatures to the camera, which is in very close proximity.

There's a good answer to that. I had a cheap generic USB car charger and noticed it drained quicker than it charged. The reason is down to a pin on the USB connector. Your phone will only charge at rate it would if plugged to a PC. Buy a genuine Samsung car charger (about a tenner) and it uses fast/full charge. I think they remove/link pins which tell it how to charge. I also found it doesn't get as hot with a genuine charger

Maby I can confirm this ...
Was on a 1 hour trip using navigation.
My screen brightness was about 20%
Did not get warm and charged +6%
I use a standard Samsung charger.

True is, I have non original car charger, but I bought some cheap one. Never charge my SGS, just kept at the same level. So I am going to buy original from Samsung.
When ur using anything Radio and/or charging for a long time its gonna get hot, by hot i mean burning hot. On my sgs, nexus one, cliq when i am on long phone calls (>30min) and charging they all get hot, and get hot when using gps even when not charging. GPS on SGS is a hit or a miss though, barely use that phone for gps

I had the Atrix, and after 10-15 of heavy usage or just gps, the bottom portion near the sim area would be hot to the touch.
Think about it this way.
Why do laptops even in such tight close spaces have some fan going? because things get hot.
Stop the fan on a laptop and let the heatsink just do the work and it will burn u.
Its just the thep hone despensing the heat.
I personally dont' think phones with 1.2ghz processors should be made so small, and not have some time of active cooling.
Seriously even if my NAS Server with a marvell 1.2ghz CPU has some type of cooling fan!

Mine also tends to heat up. I then always take off the case and try to get it cooled down somehow. But i've experienced it myself: half an hour gps+navigation=processor hot as hell and battery drained down from 85% to 15%...hope the latest firmware update fixes this...and btw: heat is not very good for any kind of battery. It makes them drain faster afaik!

Well I have a 1mA charger which I used with my HTC Desire to charge it during driving and navigating. It worked well with my HTC Desire (the HTC Desire also needs a pin connection, otherwise it won't charge fast enough during navigating) but the same charger did not work very well with the SGS2. Yesterday during navigation the battery level dropped slowly... Even though I used the same charger as I used with my HTC Desire.

I did not have this problem with Samsung Galaxy S I think it was ok. Galaxy S 2 is much more hotter.

Hmm that's odd. I'm using the same charger I used for my sgs '1'. I have to admit not tried navigation on my sgs2 yet for a long drive. Will have to test this.

The competion of thickness between samsung and apple,or other android os manufucture like S.E has crushed samsung's mind.To elicit applause,the Korean giant just sacrificed the stability to make a both thin and powerful phone.
It's hard to say the choice is wise or not.But we can already find this company is becoming upset due to the pressure from the opponents.
Did Lincoln to London (135miles), phone in cradle with brightness 100%, CamerAlert and Google Navigation running, powered via USB converter in the car.
Battery went up about 1% every 20 minutes.
Phone out of cradle at the end wasn't hot to touch unlike every other phone I've had.

IT seems that samsung has a quality variation. Did you use a brand charger or an aftermarket one?
Ok guys i am quite worried now. I played game about 10min and the top half of the phone is quite hot again. Do you have same problem or should I take mine back to a shop? I do not think this is normal right?
Backstory: I've had my Nexus 4 since December 2012. I lived in San Francisco using T-Mobile through August 2013, and I've just moved to Sydney. I got a new sim through Vodafone here, and everything went well. Though my battery did drain a bit faster than usual, I employed Greenify and pretty much solved my problems. Fast forward to this weekend, I used my phone heavily all day and turned it off once it hit 2%. After getting back home for the night, I used it heavily while charging and everything battery/power wise and otherwise was behaving as expected. I went to bed with my phone draining and at roughly ~40% (making a guess) and not on the charger. I woke up at ~3AM, put the phone on the charger, and when i woke up at 6AM, it had only charged to 67%. This was my first sign something was wrong as I usually get a full charge in less than 3hrs. Over the course of the day, I monitored my phone and notice that whether on or off it charges extremely slowly as in 6+ hours still doesn't get to 100%. Additionally, using the phone while it's on the charger is net negative on the battery's charge as in it decreases albeit very slowly while using it on the charger.
I had my phone plugged in last night, and took it off the charger at 2AM at 100%. When I woke up at 6:15AM, I took the following screenshots (attached).
You can see that over 4h 15m off the charger and with no use the phone drained 44% with 37% coming from phone idle, 23% from cell standby, and 15% from wi-fi. This seems ridiculous to me. Can anyone help? What kind of troubleshooting can I do? It feels to me like this is hardware related as I get the problems whether the phone is on or off, but I'm not sure. I'm currently rooted and using AOKP Milestone 2. Here's a screenshot from about phone (attached).

Is anything wrong with your battery? If it is in very bad shape, you should probably get a new battery.
I don't know that even excessive wake-locks would cause a phone to charge that slowly, especially a Nexus 4.
Was it on the dedicated wall charger? Have you tried multiple chargers? Multiple wall sockets?

What's the battery replacement like for the N4? Can't be an easy job that's for sure.

I've used multiple chargers, usb cords, from computer, dedicated wall charger, etc. and it behaves no differently. How can I test to see if my battery is in bad shape or not? Also, how would you suggest replacing the battery?

Even though the battery stats isn;t showing the phone as awake, I wonder if there is an errant app causing a wakelock. I would definitely check with better battery stats to see if anything is preventing your phone form sleeping when not in use.

The problem is that it's not only discharging quickly while on but charging slowly while off.

Agree, that doesn't sound normal. Still I would check before buying a new battery.

Look at Battery information
See if there is anything telling.

Attached is what I see. Everything looks normal to me? Not sure what I should be expecting though.
When in doubt, frag out.. I mean BBS out..
Use betterbattery stats and it gives a lot more info and may help you pinpoint the issue..

94.64 degree fahrenheit for the battery. Is that high?
edit: Mine says 95 degrees
It seemed that google play services was sucking most of the juice, but this isn't always the case. I decided I was just going to go with flashing a new ROM, but even with USB debugging on and Connect as Media Device checked off in USB Computer Connection, I can't get my computer to recognize my phone via USB. I've tried this with two different cords, multiple ports on my computer, and even with a friend's computer. I'm starting to think my phone has just completely **** itself. Any advice?

your body temperature averages 98.6F. keeping your phone off and in a tight pocket on a warm day could raise the temperature to 95F. so, is 95F high?
Got exactly the same problem, already replaced the battery, but that wasn't the problem. Can t RMA because I'm not on the country Where it has been bought, so I'm really with my hands tied in here.
I already thought it could be the Qualcomm Power manager (IIRC) that is damaged, but that chip is soldered onto the mainboard..

Edit/Update: Phone completely **** out today, won't turn on, and only displays a solid red LED light for ~60 seconds after plugging into a wall charger. Good thing it's in warranty I guess.

ohhhh holy crap...
Dont worry. just charge your mobile for atleast 8 hrs and then switch it on.
