[Q] Car charger = weak sauce? - Droid X General

I use my car dock constantly with my X. I have my car charger connected to it so I don't kill my battery from Pandora. So today I used my gps in conjunction with Pandora. After about 20 minutes I noticed my battery indicator had dropped. I looked close and it wasn't charging anymore. I unplugged and plugged in each connection (cigarette lighter, back of dock, phone in dock). No dice. The phone did recognize I was unplugging it, though, as it reminded me to unplug my charger to conserve energy. I also tried to charge the phone with just the car charger alone instead of running though the dock. Still no dice. I got to my destination and took my phone inside with me. It was SUPER hot, but still running. I rebooted the phone and it was able to charge in my car again. I listened to Pandora without gps to get lunch. It indicated the phone was charging, but the battery % dropped a bit. The phone was no longer hot. It is now charging my phone without running Pandora or the gps. I took a trip using gps and pandora in conjunction without losing power, but also didn't gain a charge while in the dock. Could the heat have caused Android to force the charge to stop, or is the charger a piece?

I noticed the same the battery is overheating if possible put an ac vent on it. I've had this happen with my tp2 as well as my X. Sucks get to your destination with a dead phone.

I am a ups driver we have no ac anytime it gets hot in the truck my phone won't charge I have the phone pluged in all day. I have had the same problem with all my htc phones. Battery gets hot =no charge

I don't think I have had my battery go down any, but I just thought I was using as much juice as was going in. I use pandora and gps at the same time.battery does get hot

what is a good car charger? I've seen cheap ones but I dont know if there are better more expensive ones?

I got the 2.99 one on cellphoneshop.net and as long as the phone is not hot it works great. I can watch slingplayer and have bt on and still charge. I have the AC coming out of the defroster to keep it cool.

I use the OEM Motorola one and while yes, it definitely gets hot when I am running GPS and Pandora, it does charge. Very very slowly. I definitely don't lose charge though.

I have the same charger as above so don't think its the charger.

Battery bad warmth weirdness

Say, juys.
I've been reading about battery life and charging, etc. I actually do get pretty decent battery now with plenty of use and everything I want turned on, but that's not why I'm posting.
I have read that if you use certain chargers and the back of the phone gets warm, it means that charger's not charging the battery right and you should immediately stop using it. But I have noticed that when I use the official HTC charger, the back of the phone gets warm, but only on the BOTTOM of the battery door close to the charge port, NOT on top where the battery actually is.
I've even pulled the battery off and felt it when this happens, and it's not warm, which is weird/good. So I guess that's ok, right? Anyone else seeing this behavior?

on a related note if you are really worried about battery temp the HTC battery widget tells you the temp
i haven't had any issues like this. the only charger i use is the wall-mount/usb plug that came with the phone, and just the usb cable from a computer.
I was getting a warm back using the stock charger until flashing CM6. I still have issues when using navigation software though.

My battery gets very hot (58 C) when using the GPS + Google Navigation + Charging. (Charging with the htc cable with a USB car charger that I have). I asked HTC and they suggested a hard reset, and if not, send it back.
Last night when I used my gps for navigation, the htc battery widget even gave me "Status: Overheat"
Does this happen to other people? I can't be the only person using this as a gps....
i had some bad overheating issues. i ended up returning that aria for another one and had none thereafter.
my temps would reach 55~60 even while it wasnt charging or using it.
the entire phone would be extremely hot, including the glass on the front. it would almost be too hot to touch.
i dont know what is was that would cause it. but i think it coulda been when i first got the phone using setcpu, but im not sure.
but if your worried about the temps being too high you can always return it for another if your still within your 30 day window.
No idea I didn't but I will. Notice next time when I use gps but when charging phone it doesn't get hot its normal tho even if it gets hot all phone does get hot while charging. N using

X10 Sat Nav Battery Drain when charging

When i run google maps for navigation my battery seems to continue to drain even when i have the charger connected in my car. So much so tht my battery dropped from 70% to 5% in an hours journey. Ive made sure the charger is connected throught the journey and the phone display confi

Confirmed that it was. Am i missing something? Not much use as sat nav if the battery continues to drain!
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
Hi..I also get battery drain, but no where near as bad as that.. Maybe 2% per hour.. I've had a couple of chargers off ebay and one is better than the other, so it could be that your charger is the problem rather than the phone?
Sent from my x10 using XDA and swype.
Mines has started charging properly now with sat navigation on...
Only difference is I'm no longer using Google which, as you'll know, uses data which is what eats the battery (and your allowance)
it also depends on which charger you on using. I think the original X10 charger is .5A (500mA) charger. If you get a higher rated charger, you should be able to charge the phone faster even with the drain.
The standard HTC chargers are rated 1A (1000mA), pretty cheap online
I've found that when my x10 gets too hot while using copilot it stops charging. I just turn the screen off for a bit and it cools down again!

ya i know that sometimes it get can quite hot (especially if its in the sun for extended periods) and the phone will stop charging.
if you have an air vent mount u can just blast the a/c for a bit ...
or get a higher rated charger
In the car i'm using this:
http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045...nator-100w-power-inverter-reviews/reviews.htm
+ the supplied X10 charger and is actually charging my battery even with the GPS on + maximum brightness
Well, using the AC not the USB port...

Does anyone know where i can get the original charger? Ive got the same problem. Tried to purchase from SE UK but see no option and phones4u etc but no one has them.

When using phone heavily and charging battery drians.

Hey guys thought I would post here has anyone else expierence this before?
When charging in my car and using either gmaps with gps and listening to music with my g2 the battery drians even while charging!
Yesterday it screwed me over. I was going to a place I had never been and no matter what I tried it wouldn't boot any more. Even after plugging it in to the car charger.
The farthest I would get is that it boots into recovery I hit reboot now and it endlessly loops. Its weird. Is my battery bad?
Thanks!

Your battery is fine. I suggest you pull the battery out for a minute or 2 and put it back in
BUT
do not turn the phone on yet. let it charge for half and hour to an hour to give it some charge back and see what happens from there.
Pretty much agree with the above. Make sure you use the wall charger, not USB or the car charger, as those supply lower voltage (EDIT: current or mA, thats the term/units I should have said, per below). Let the phone charge for a long time, maybe overnight, and see what happens.
I've never tried using GPS and playing music at the same time (at least not for any significant length of time). What do you have your screen brightness set at? Since the screen is always on when using Maps/Navigation, turning it down may have a big impact on battery drain, and might result in the charging rate being greater than the drain rate.
I bought the official HTC car usb adaptor for this very reason. Most car adaptors only output between about 300 to 500mA which is less than the battery drain when you play music, use gps and have 3g activated. The HTC adaptor outputs 1000mA and is the fastest car charger I have found. It is as fast as the Nokia N86 home charger I have. Buy one and you won't be dissapointed. It comes with a coiled usb lead in the pack but I use mine with the retractable usb lead that came with my powertraveller.

USB supplies only 500mA and car chargers often only supply 1000mA as mentioned. This might not be enough to cover everything =/
My car charger (the official HTC Nexus One car dock) does 2000mA though so it's great =)

Great info. I didn't realize the HTC car charger was that much better than others.
Ah ok this has to be it! Yes I imagine between taxing the cpu, generating heat, 3g, gps, and the screen on with music playing would drain faster than a regular usb can keep up with! Thanks guys. I will be finding a better car adapter! Anyone have any links of where they went?

I purchased the Motorola Car Charger from the thread below. Did some research on it, and it is rated to put out 950mah. Not quite as much as the stock HTC car charger, but its only $5 if you follow the link from the thread.

I don't use my phone nearly as heavily as you do in the car, only for GPS directions when I need them. But it works great when I need a quick charge. Drove to work last night (about 15 minutes) and it took me from 22% - 34%. Enough to make it through the evening shift!

Samsung Galaxy S2 very hot GPS + charging

Hi guys,
I used GPS for first time with my new SGS2. I was surprised how phone was hot. I had SGS but I never had any problem. GPS program is Sygic, I used same car charger, which I used for SGS. I drove home maybe 10min and phone was realy very hot, the screen also, back of the phone. Do you have same problem or do you think my phone is faulty?
Mine after 30 min surfing the internet is very hot (next to the camera and screen on top). Also i am worried about that...
Enviado desde mi GT-I9100 usando Tapatalk
Yes this I have same, but it is still OK compare to GPS and charging.
GPS + charge is always a hit or miss. My SGS was a little better, but my HTC Touch Pro 2 got blazing hot. All depends on the device, I'm more worried about the long term effects of such temperatures to the camera, which is in very close proximity.
I noticed when using sygic with gps that the battery continues to drain even when using the car charger.

There's a good answer to that. I had a cheap generic USB car charger and noticed it drained quicker than it charged. The reason is down to a pin on the USB connector. Your phone will only charge at rate it would if plugged to a PC. Buy a genuine Samsung car charger (about a tenner) and it uses fast/full charge. I think they remove/link pins which tell it how to charge. I also found it doesn't get as hot with a genuine charger

Was on a 1 hour trip using navigation.
My screen brightness was about 20%
Did not get warm and charged +6%
I use a standard Samsung charger.

True is, I have non original car charger, but I bought some cheap one. Never charge my SGS, just kept at the same level. So I am going to buy original from Samsung.
When ur using anything Radio and/or charging for a long time its gonna get hot, by hot i mean burning hot. On my sgs, nexus one, cliq when i am on long phone calls (>30min) and charging they all get hot, and get hot when using gps even when not charging. GPS on SGS is a hit or a miss though, barely use that phone for gps
Don't listen to peopel telling you it's the charge that is causing the phone to heat up.
thats just nonsense.
Its the 1.2ghz cpu.. and the close tight body of the phone.
I had the Atrix, and after 10-15 of heavy usage or just gps, the bottom portion near the sim area would be hot to the touch.
Think about it this way.
Why do laptops even in such tight close spaces have some fan going? because things get hot.
Stop the fan on a laptop and let the heatsink just do the work and it will burn u.
Its just the thep hone despensing the heat.
I personally dont' think phones with 1.2ghz processors should be made so small, and not have some time of active cooling.
Seriously even if my NAS Server with a marvell 1.2ghz CPU has some type of cooling fan!
this is just ridiculous
Mine also tends to heat up. I then always take off the case and try to get it cooled down somehow. But i've experienced it myself: half an hour gps+navigation=processor hot as hell and battery drained down from 85% to 15%...hope the latest firmware update fixes this...and btw: heat is not very good for any kind of battery. It makes them drain faster afaik!
Cheers

Well I have a 1mA charger which I used with my HTC Desire to charge it during driving and navigating. It worked well with my HTC Desire (the HTC Desire also needs a pin connection, otherwise it won't charge fast enough during navigating) but the same charger did not work very well with the SGS2. Yesterday during navigation the battery level dropped slowly... Even though I used the same charger as I used with my HTC Desire.

Yeah,u are right~
The competion of thickness between samsung and apple,or other android os manufucture like S.E has crushed samsung's mind.To elicit applause, the Korean giant just sacrificed the stability to make a both thin and powerful phone.
It's hard to say the choice is wise or not.But we can already find this company is becoming upset due to the pressure from the opponents.
Did Lincoln to London (135miles), phone in cradle with brightness 100%, CamerAlert and Google Navigation running, powered via USB converter in the car.
Battery went up about 1% every 20 minutes.
Phone out of cradle at the end wasn't hot to touch unlike every other phone I've had.

Ok guys i am quite worried now. I played game about 10min and the top half of the phone is quite hot again. Do you have same problem or should I take mine back to a shop? I do not think this is normal right?

GPS & bluetooth + charger =no charge

While traveling I was using the gps (coPilot) with my bluetooth on, (just for calls) and was getting low on battery!
So... Naturally I plugged in the charger! Guess what! Battery drained nonetheless!
Has anyone else seen this? I have the screen brightness to the lowest setting... But to no avail!
I apologize if it's been covered before, but just looking to see if anyone else had this issue and any suggestions on making that battery not run down while plugged in!
Thanks everyone! Oh, and yes I have a second battery for these occasions!

Also, if the phone gets too hot, it will stop charging.

are those chargers "random" chargers of other phones ?
my official samsung charger that came with it has decided to pack in after a month of use, it no longer charges at the rate it used to of about 24% an hour and im lucky to get about 5% an hour now. I've tried my old hd2 charger (same 5v 1a output) and it charges without any issues
samung make crap chargers
That's what I think the issue is, I'm using a generic charger and it's not pushing enough juice!
Gonna pick up another charger soon and report back.

I got a 1A car charger with my mount which works ok (cheapo chinese says 1A). I think any car charger with a USB slot which says 'Ipad' would work better, IIRC the ipad needs ~2.2A so it would have plenty of juice.
I've got various car chargers, one at 850mA, one at 1A and one at 2.1A. None of them charge the Note while using sat nav (Copilot) even using night mode (dark backgrounds to maps) and dimming the backlight in between junctions. I've tried the USB lead that came with the Note and a lead from another phone. No improvement.
The phone shows Charging AC because I have the central pins shorted on the chargers, but even that is not enough. I'm thinking the only solution is to buy a proper Samsung charger, which might have some other trick up its sleeve for getting the Note to draw sufficient current.
I have just switched from using co pilot to another satnav app and the phone now charges faster. I knew co pilot was juice hungry. ...
