I have been backing up my Nexus One with Titanium. Very nice and reliable.
Now that I have changed to a HTC Panache (MT4G), I can't root the phone and Titanium won't work.
Any suggestions for a reliable app to backup the config, apps and data ?
Thanks
There is none. Without root access you can't back up anything but your personal data.
But I'll write it here too - you could actually read the thread where you complain about various rooting methods not working - read my post answering you, read some more, and get root. It'll wipe the phone in the process, but you don't have a choice anyway.
I have the XOOM WiFi only and love it.
Previously I have had an Android phone and looked at that time at rooting it in order to upgrade to Android 2.0. Vodafone was being a bit slow with updates however as I was on contract I chickened out.
Obviously I am not on a contract with the XOOM so i am wondering if someone could explain the benefits to be had in rooting my XOOM, other than installing ICS before Motorola release it.
What are the risks of bricking it and what do I have to do to back up the data.

I followed a particular method of rooting that wiped the tablet. I didn't really care about my app data but you may be able to find a method to root that maintains user data. I use Titanium Backup to backup user data but it requires root. Astro file manager also does backups - not sure if it requires root so you may want to give it a shot.
Aside from flashing ROMs/kernels, the biggest benefit to me is using SixAxis controller to use my PS3 controller with games.
I use Astro so I'll have a look.

It's the unlocking, not the rooting, per se, that wipes the tablet. Good luck finding a rooting method that doesn't require unlocking the bootloader.
(Chuckles under breath.)
Don't forget over locking too!
I just love tinkering so just flashing a now rom makes me happy
So what are the advantages of rooting an Andfoid device?

Lol, you already knew there's no other way but to unlock first which wipe everything. I've been searching all over but result to none available.
this is what holding me back from rooting my wife's wifi Xoom. She have a bunch of games and app data that needed to be save before the unlocking but apparently the xoom is easier to unlock and do permanent root than to find temp root just to use root only app.
how long did it take to root the device?

Access to everything.....but the advantage would be able to run apps that require root. Titanium Backup being a primary one for me. Root Explorer if you like to move files to or edit files in /system. There are quite a few apps that require root that I find useful.

The ability to back everything up completely, and to be able to change your system fonts and customize your own Xoom experience to your heart's content.
Like others have already said I like the overclocking ability, true access to everything, customization, etc...
Although I have to admit, just rooted my Xoom for the first time last night. Not sure why I waited so long.
I did run a rooted/rom'd D1 for quite a while though.
Hi,
I have been looking for a way to backup my phone data, especially app data. The problem is that I did not root my phone before I started using it, and now I don't want to lose my data.
I am on KitKat, so it doesn't even allow me to write to an SD card.
The backup apps I see in the store, all seem to require root privileges.
I found a couple of apps (Holo Backup and Helium) which claimed to be able to backup app data without root privileges.
Unfortunately HoloBackup just hanged on the backup step, and Helium could never detect my phone.
Could anyone please reply or direct me to a post that has a solution ?
Thanks,
Hirak
Preferably for free.
Unfortunately, probably not without root. Texts are usually saved in a database akin to the texting app, and to access an internal app's data; you are going to need root. Sorry I can't help you out. Even with root, depending on the system of course, this database may either wipe the text or just mark it as deleted, either way, you will need root.
I am completely new to rooting and, if I understand correctly, the process of rooting (specifically unlocking the boatloader) will wipe your apps and their data. What can I do, pre-root, to backup my app data? I have Google's backup on, but from what I can tell, it really doesn't do jack sneezle (I assume that's because Google doesn't require app developers to make their app data (settings, login, etc.) compliant with their backup system). Reinstalling the apps isn't a huge deal to me, but having to recustomize ALL my settings and login to everything again is a pain in the keister. Any suggestions? Is there any apps out there to facilitate this transition period? Let me know what you guys think. If possible, give multiple methods, and let me know which one you find the best. Thanks!
I don't know of any way to back up your apps and data without being rooted. I think you are just going to have to bite the bullet. You need root access before you can even access the folders that app data is stored in.
you havent unlocked the bootloader yet..
so probably no way to back up the data beforehand..
[edit]
you can use adb backup & restore commands to back up and restore, but im not sure if its possible to just restore the app data without overwrite the whole device..
Try Helium. Requires a PC.
There aren't many methods to backup on an unrooted phone.
