thanks the lord my phone i freaking awesome now i got this apps called easytether for android my mobile broadband has the speed of 7.2 mbps wile my SE x10 has 144.2 mbps wen i connected to usb... wahhhhh so f....king very fast...
PdaNET works very well as well. Was using it on my X10 before rooting and switching to Barnacle. Used it on my old WinMo-based iPAQ before that.
EasyTether Lite is available for free on the market. Otherwise, it's $9.99 for the full version. If you're proposing sharing the full version with people, that goes against forum rules and this thread should be deleted.

@junexyz
saltorio is correct. If you are willing to distribute the free version (also found in the Market) it is perfectly fine, but offering/requesting the distribution of a paid app (the full version) is considered warez and as such, it is strictly prohibited under XDA rules. If you will not upload the apk that you are offering in here, I can only assume that you are distributing the full version, and not uploading it to avoid getting caught.
I am closing this thread and will reopen it only if you are indeed trying to re-distribute the free version... with the author's consent.
Thread closed.

Does any one know if tethering will be done with out the verizon 30 dlr charge? I just installed 2.1 yesterady and have had zero problems.
I will answer my own question, it is possible with a simple app from the android market, it's called eazy tether lite, just follow directions on install, and remember not to go over the 5gb limit.
There is not cap on how much you can you use internet on your phone ...Just call verizon and verify if you don't believe me.

For those of you who don't know, that 5gb limit is for the mobile broadband card (see link for reference of what I mean); all of the Verizon reps I have talked to said that the internet package is TRULY unlimited. Thus, I use Pandora pretty much every single day. No increase on the bill yet.
I have to say this because I/We(Sickbox) just told someone else this. Questions about apps should go in the Android app section accessable from the HTC Droid Eris screen. I know it really didn't start as an "app" question but in reality it did. Anyways carry on and don't forget about the other sections just outside of the Android Development section.
PDA Net is also a good program for us non rooted folks
You may get throttled back over 5gig but not blocked.
Im using internet sharing. Not the hot spot. Can I cancel the hot spot and save the $30. a month and still use internet sharing. Thanks
Yes you can. The wifi hot spot is only necessary if you want to turn your devices into a WiFi hot spot so other devices could use it, such as the iPad. If you just want to have internet access for your own laptop/desktop, just use the usb cable and you're off and running.
If you root your phone, free wifi tether is now working as of yesterday.
use the wifi tethering that ChrisDos referenced. it works flawlessly!

I was using PDAnet on our Evo's until yesterday. Now both are rooted and using WiFi tether and work just fine. No extra $30 per Evo to sprint here.
Thanks
Thanks Alot. New the the droid world. Learning. Been an wm user for years.
Dont feel bad. Ive been WiMo for years also. Android is totally new but I should have crossed over long before now.
When is 2.2 scheduled for release? Would it be smart to wait til after 2.2 to root my phone, is there any reason to wait or will they be able to do anything with 2.2 that could block me from the update if I have a rooted phone?

The USB internet sharing option won't work without the plan. You can use it to share a wifi connection, but not your mobile connection.
If you want to keep using USB tethering without the $30 fee, you can install Android Wired Tether. Only the official version won't work for the Evo, the Eris and a couple other HTC phones.
Here's the version that works on our phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=351324&d=1277754525
It's attached to this post in the HTC Legend forum, but it was originally tested on the Evo.
Guys a sprint rep told me its 30 bucks either way.. i don't know if they are right or not i would be giants recommend rooting your phone .. look into unrevoked

whoops wrong thread
Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?
Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.
Sent from my Bonzai'd Epic 4g.
It is usually usable only on the Eclair build when rooted. Sometimes not ;-)

Ok I found a hit on google for wireless tether on google code. The only samsung glaxy device I saw said it ran on 1.5 but I'm on 2.1 so it should work right. I'm not sure if the device listed works with epic but it said galaxy device. Also will sprint notice the increase of data usage and charge me more?
Nope, unless you start dl movies.

So standard internet browsing should be fine then?
Your expectations are unrealistic and this is a really easy subject to search for.
I don't unerstand how my expectations are unrealistic but thanks for the responses anyways.

Here you. Root and wifi tether and other stuff all in one. Easy menu.

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.
Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.
I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

Am I missing the OP's question that Sprint called this device a mobile hotspot?? Is Sprint lying?
If you don't pay the $30 a month charge for hotspotting, will Sprint find out and charge you any extra if you tether your phone after rooting it?

Ive been tethering since i had windows mobile, and ive never been in trouble, just dont download movies or any other big files. I mean its not even worth it to download movies takes too long anyhow. Just dont take your phone in rooted with that app on it or then u might get into some trouble.
If you have an epic 4g you have unlimited (truely unlimited) data...they are not going to say anything regardless of how much data you use. That being said spint will not Check the status of your phone (root or un rooted). You are go to go on tethering

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.
Thanks for letting me know!
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?
Drake
Forgive me if this question has been answered in another thread I did search but could find the answer also forgive me if this is the wrong thread. I'm new to the android world fr I've been with Winmo. Ok my question.
I was wondering if I can use mobile hotspot if I root my android device from verizion ( droid incredible) without paying for the hotspot service they have. With tmobile all you need is a data plan which I have with verizion but hotspot cost extra. Is there a app or tweak etc to be able to use your data with Verizion mobile as a Wifi hotspot? Thanks

I don't think you can find the google version in the market. Here is the link:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
There is also one in the market called Barnacle wifi tether. That one will probably work also. And yes, you need to be rooted. Unless you have a phone that already is set up to be a hot spot, like the MT4G, but I think it's restricted to only two connections. Not sure as I only used it briefly and rooted my phone and use the Google version hence forth.

A root user of any carrier can do this. I know I am not paying for tethering with tmo but I have the feature. I also know that you are responsible for anything your carrier does as a consequence if using and/or abusing the feature without paying for it.

EDIT:
I no longer own a u8800, neither will I host the download server in the near future. Better host providers exists than my download server. I still have the files (approx. 15-20GB) if anyone else is interested for hosting, though they are most likely outdated by now.

Hi!
I decided that I will host a mirror for everything related to our U8800 - Ideos X5.
It's hosted at my home. I have 20Mbps uplink on FTTH (fiber). The links below are redundant, each link is hosted on a seperate 20Mbps link. I do have some issues from time to time on server.streznik.org, cause it is updating in my OS, while qrac.zapto.org is updated on my router.
I will try to keep things organized and be online as much as possible (I cant guarantee 99% uptime). I am from Europe, so speeds elsewhere may be a bit slow.
And if I helped you getting a file you could not find elsewhere, use the Thanks button.
Primary: http://qrac.zapto.org/
Secondary: http://server.streznik.org/ Please use this only if the primary website is down
Permanently offline!
I switched to Ubuntu server for hosting the mirror, I will add upload function later.
Update 14.3.2012:
Switched to HFS. Everyone can upload, I will sort files later. Developers are not strangers here aswell. No bandwidth capping.
Update 18.3.2012
Added U8800 PRO section per request
Added some statistics at the bottom of the page
Update 21.3.2012
Wow! Over 200 Absolute Unique Visitors in 2 days reported by Google Analytics!
HFS reports over 1200 IP's connected since I began this little project! Few of them are zombies from China, but still!
Update 23.3.2012
New categories, I grouped them because of the increasing vertical size. It takes a second or two longer to find what you are actually looking for (more clicks), but it makes the whole page more compact.
Also added a graph at the bottom of the page (1.8kB), pink is download and yellow is upload.
Update 28.3.2012
All paid apk's have been removed after consulting with the moderator. Free apk's are allowed to be uploaded, while the paid ones will be deleted immediately, on the second occasion that a user will upload a paid apk, I will ban the IP.
Update 5.4.2012
I have changed my phone to Galaxy S i9000(Huawei never again!). I will still host the mirror, but it might not be updated so frequently.
Update 2.6.2012
I've updated ICS Aurora ROM files, as it is the ROM I keep my eyes on.
... Great news for all u8800 users ..
..just a little notice for you.. remove the ''mystuff'' folder, it contains Warez/Illegal files..

Its based on kernel .32 , froyo 2.2.2 and its flawless "there are no known bugs". You dont have a upload button so i leave the link. Cya and keep the server running.

Nice to see you having such work, but you can use a free app named "hfs file server" that is a http server with upload button already included, and other good things like ip update "for services like no-ip".

Please give me feedback on the download speeds. What is your best download speed compared to this mirror?
I tried it on my U8800, I got 2MB/s, not over LAN but Internet. I am worried because I see speeds about 140kB/s, one had 40kB/s. I have overclocked my router for best possible speeds.
I think you are overthinking the speeds of download, let me remind you that a lot of ppl are still atatched to adsl at 12 mb/s even less.
If you browse the forum of hfs you can find little tweaks that can do a little improvment, none the less, i tested and everything went well.
Sorry for the bad english, its not my native language.

I want to offer the best possible speeds to everyone, that means even if there are multiple users downloading, they still get their maximum speed. Mediafire is capping downloading to about 800kB/s, which is 1/3 of my speed. I believe there are more people like me, that want their files asap.

Well being few thousand kilometers apart does not help...that is why I mentioned "slow" speeds from those who arent from Europe or near EU.
After all, the main reason I had put up this backup mirror, well so it is backup up. Slower speed is better then no speed. Afaik I made everything as fast as possible.
Relax mate. I am not complaining at all! I actually love this because I downloaded SuperOneClick straight away in a few minutes.. I would have spent more time looking around the forum (and clicking broken links) then it took to download.
Keep up the good work mate. It's very organised.
