Im using internet sharing. Not the hot spot. Can I cancel the hot spot and save the $30. a month and still use internet sharing. Thanks
Yes you can. The wifi hot spot is only necessary if you want to turn your devices into a WiFi hot spot so other devices could use it, such as the iPad. If you just want to have internet access for your own laptop/desktop, just use the usb cable and you're off and running.
If you root your phone, free wifi tether is now working as of yesterday.
use the wifi tethering that ChrisDos referenced. it works flawlessly!

I was using PDAnet on our Evo's until yesterday. Now both are rooted and using WiFi tether and work just fine. No extra $30 per Evo to sprint here.
Thanks
Thanks Alot. New the the droid world. Learning. Been an wm user for years.
Dont feel bad. Ive been WiMo for years also. Android is totally new but I should have crossed over long before now.
When is 2.2 scheduled for release? Would it be smart to wait til after 2.2 to root my phone, is there any reason to wait or will they be able to do anything with 2.2 that could block me from the update if I have a rooted phone?

The USB internet sharing option won't work without the plan. You can use it to share a wifi connection, but not your mobile connection.
If you want to keep using USB tethering without the $30 fee, you can install Android Wired Tether. Only the official version won't work for the Evo, the Eris and a couple other HTC phones.
Here's the version that works on our phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=351324&d=1277754525
It's attached to this post in the HTC Legend forum, but it was originally tested on the Evo.
Guys a sprint rep told me its 30 bucks either way.. i don't know if they are right or not i would be giants recommend rooting your phone .. look into unrevoked

I see that there is now an option to use the phone as a wireless hotspot in the settings. I don't see any mention of this costing money or anything popping up telling me that it will cost $$.
How does this work?
just try it lol
also check to see if there is an added apn. it should have only 3
tmo data mms and fota
It works great! Watching Netflix on my iPod Touch through my G2's hotspot. I read on Engadget that the $14.95/mo hotspot fee starts tomorrow 11/4, and to enjoy the free wifi while it lasts. Will they just disable it OTA tomorrow? I dunno, but I'm going to keep using it til then.
if anything i have the apk for free wifi tethering so if u need it ill post it
I'm curious how this will work as well. It's not prompting me to require any specific plan or monies, though I'm wary of using this after their "opening" date tomorrow and suddenly incur some hidden charge.
yea, thats what im wary of too
I'm sure its a great feeling using the hell Out'ta the new hotspOT feAture now... but WATCHOUT FOR THE 5GB (throttled) DATA CAP!!

Yep, this tether is built into the ROM like Froyo's should be. Settings > Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot. No app required.
Tethered for like an hour tonight, no complaints here
question: do you have to pay for sprint's mobile hotspot to use mobileap? I flashed the dk17 viper rom to my epic last night and it keeps saying something under the lines of my sprint pcs username and pw couldn't be authorized...

MobileAP is notorious for having issues unless it is perfectly integrated into the ROM. Try using Wireless Tether, it is available for free just do a search for it on here. IMO it works much better than Sprint Hotspot, and there is no need to pay for it. If you still have problems (I can never get neither MobileAP nor Wireless Tether working properly on my phone), try using a wired tether app such as PdaNet or Wired Tether. These require the usb cable to be plugged in, but there are far fewer compatiblity issues. Hope this helps!

Nope, it is a free solution to tether your existing 3G or 4G data connection wirelessly. You just need to have it baked into whichever ROM you are using, as it is not a standalone .apk.

I'm not sure about speed, wired tether would surely be the fastest as there is no loss of speed from wireless data transfer. PdaNet is very slow IMO, I don't use it anymore due to this. MobileAP shouldn't be too much faster than WifiTether, as they are both using essentially the same protocol to do the same thing, just different ways of going about it. Keep following the ViperROM thread, I'm sure BT will get a fully functional MobileAP mod working shortly
yeah the sprint hotspot is a sprint app (obviously, lol) that you will have to pay for to use. the MobileAP in the vipeROM is in Settings > Wireless > Mobile AP. Its not going to be any faster than wireless tether, the benefit is that the above are both infrastructure mode while wireless tether is ad hoc. some devices cannot connect to ad hoc connections.
i tested the vipeROM mobile AP and my lappy could connect successfully and cant connect to ad hoc. it looks like he swiped it from the captivate since there was att related text in it, lol. but it works, data worked, i jsut got messages every few seconds about not being able to register me or something like that, but it continued to work, lol. hope this helps
Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?
Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.

Ok I found a hit on google for wireless tether on google code. The only samsung glaxy device I saw said it ran on 1.5 but I'm on 2.1 so it should work right. I'm not sure if the device listed works with epic but it said galaxy device. Also will sprint notice the increase of data usage and charge me more?
Nope, unless you start dl movies.

So standard internet browsing should be fine then?
Your expectations are unrealistic and this is a really easy subject to search for.

Here you. Root and wifi tether and other stuff all in one. Easy menu.

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.
Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.
I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

Am I missing the OP's question that Sprint called this device a mobile hotspot?? Is Sprint lying?
If you don't pay the $30 a month charge for hotspotting, will Sprint find out and charge you any extra if you tether your phone after rooting it?

Ive been tethering since i had windows mobile, and ive never been in trouble, just dont download movies or any other big files. I mean its not even worth it to download movies takes too long anyhow. Just dont take your phone in rooted with that app on it or then u might get into some trouble.
If you have an epic 4g you have unlimited (truely unlimited) data...they are not going to say anything regardless of how much data you use. That being said spint will not Check the status of your phone (root or un rooted). You are go to go on tethering

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.
Thanks for letting me know!
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?

so ive got an evo. and i use my wireless tethering quite often. and when the galaxy tab came out, i tried to tether it to my phone, and i couldnt get it to work. i have no interest in a 3g or 4g connection for a tablet, atleast not now. so does anyone have any idea if i will be able to piggyback the xoom off of my phone?

It should work the same as any other wireless device. My wife uses her IPAD off my evo all the time.
have you tried tethering a android device to another android tablet? i tried it with a hero and an evo. couldnt get either to work.

Which did you tether to what. HTC EVO, being designed for tethering has the proper wifi drivers to offer full infrastructure mode tethering. Some other devices, maybe the Hero, originally not being designed for wifi-tethering, only offered a certain kind of tethering that didn't work with some devices. IIRC this was fixed in the freely available Android Wifi Tether app. So if you tried to share your EVO's connection with the Hero, that should have worked. The reverse maybe not so much.
I tethered my HTC EVO to a Viewsonic G-Tablet with no problem so I don't foresee a issue with the xoom.
i was using wifi tether on my evo to provide the galaxy tab with internet. couldnt get it to work. so we tried the wifi tether on my brothers hero, and that would not support it either. im crossing my fingers that the xoom will be able to.
Your wifi tether program might not be working, I had the htc evo 4g and tether to the ipad, laptop, galaxy tab without a problem.

are you using an app or the native tethering btw? theres a few apps that only offer ad hoc wifi which isnt really "meant" for internet. It more of a device to device type thing. while infrastructure is internet to device and thats what you want from your evo. i think i explained that right, i havent slept for like a day. i got too freakin excited about preorder i couldnt fall asleep lol
I had that problem initially with the Viewsonic G-Tablet and with my Kindle. Change the wifi channel in the tethering app to anything but what it is, and try again.
Wireless tether, I've been able to have other android phones and an iPhone see it. For some strange reason barnacle won't show up on a scan with other wifi phones. It's probably going into a different mode that laptops can see but some phones can't.

I think you are right. Android devices can't wifi connect to ad-hoc connections, thus tethering doesn't work. However, if you have hotspot capability on your phone it might be different. Or even different tethering programs that don't do ad hoc. Do these exist?
I could wireless tether the Viewsonic Gtab (pre and post root) to my Evo using Fresh Rom and the included wireless tether. Fast and stable
I'm using the wifi tether app for root users from the android market. And yes it works great with my netbook, work desktop, home desktop, and even my ps3. As well as supplying a connection for a buddies iPhone. But when trying to connect the galaxy tab... nothing. It didnt even recognize it. I guess we will see in a few days. Cause this "will be a dealbreaker ladies" (for those that watch 30 rock)

There's always the option of running a rom that has it preinstalled, such as CommunityRom, which has a hacked default hotspot, or CM7/MIUI, which have their own.
What OS are you on for your PC?

+1 on the WIFI Tether for Root Users as it supports infastructure mode instead of just adhoc.

Running Win7. Was finally able to connect after flashing a fresh CM7 nightly and using built in tethering. Though it took a few minutes to actually get internet access. I would prefer to use wifi tether, but just can't connect to it in infrastructure, only ad-hoc, even after I snagged an AP module from EVO system dump. It seems infrastructure mode on DInc is really hit or miss.
