Should We Update to 2.2? - EVO 4G General

Hey guys. I am new to Android development, but I noticed that Froyo is coming out in waves in a few days. I also noticed that Sprint is letting us manually check for updates. So my question is: Because of the possibility of them plugging holes in rooting, etc., should we update, or stick with 2.1 for now? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! It is safe to use the rooted 2.2 ROMs from here. Don't install the HTC/Sprint OTA update if you want to keep root or root in the future.

Froyo poyo. Ok this is the way I see it. I have 2.1 with 55fps and 4g wifi tethering. Froyo omg really 40mflops and 1200 quadrant score, wow. But only 30fps, setcpu not working correctly, no 4g tethering, and will have issues for let's just say until HTC releases the kernal. Then and only then will froyo be worth it in my opinion. Then the devs here will be able to get 55 fps and 4g wifi back.
Froyo faster and stripped - Eclair slower but everything working.

SetCPU does work, as does wifi and usb tethering, oh and the 30FPS cap is broken too. Search for a different kernel you obviously can't overclock the stock one.

Can I DL from here and update without root?

Dave sweet then please let me know how and where you got the 4G 4G wifi tethering working because I love it. Wait did I say 4G? lol jk dave. Yes I can get 55 fps but it breaks the camera. Unless once again you found a new kernal that I have not seen. Yes setcpu works, my bad. I just want and need 4G wifi tethering and 55fps.

yesterday morning I was prompted for two updates. I got all excited and thought it was Froyo, but it wasn't. What were those two updates? radio? Did everybody else got those two update prompts?
thanks.

I have kept my EVO stock so far, and decided to install the Froyo update when I saw it on Engadget. Really wish I hadn't. This thing is buggy. Definitely still usable, and I dont mind bugs; but for those of you who want stability, WAIT for HTC's final build of this update.

Final build is in 3 days don't think much will change if anything. Anytime something is "so called" leaked every company always say "don't download or may not be final". The goal here was to beat Verizon and Motorola to the launch by as many days as possible. I think sprint handshake with HTC had something to do with it. One days its announced OTA will be released in 5 days the next day its on the companies website.

We (Sprint users) won't see the update next month. Sprint has already said that they will release their update sometime in the 2nd Quarter (Apr-Jun). The delay is so that they can add/optimize their bloatware garbage that most of us end up uninstalling anyway...
Not like anyone is gunna unroot and update anyway besides well have it before Sprint even thinks about realeasing it maybe even bored of it lol

Pretty much everyone will unroot for 2.1. What makes you think people are going to stick with old roms or buggy 2.0+ when they can have the real 2.1? Im sure once some decent custom roms for 2.1+ start surfacing people will start using them but until then stock 2.1 > Rooted 1.5.
That said sprint has already officially said Q2 just a couple days ago. Regardless of what the rumor mills say no update next month.

I imagine that a lot of people will indeed wait until the XDA devs release their own 2.1 update. Many, if not most, will not upgrade to a new 2.1 official release if they don't know if it can be rooted.

I seriously doubt that anyone here (besides you) will unroot for the update. Why? Because the root hole will almost certainly be closed and may not be able to be rooted again. Eris owners still do not have root. That is something that most people here will not give up. When the update arrives, the incredible devs here will have it working "with" root within a couple of days and that is the route most will take.

Well to be honest, I am rooted and I will NOT be unrooting for 2.1. Matter of fact I will be running 2.1 sooner than sprint will be releasing it. But once they do, I will be running a customized 2.1 which will be better than Sprints simply because it will be optimized and without all the bloatware I don't want. There's no way I would want to give up having root. Just my 2 cents though.

Hahahaha, funny. No. Make a poll and ask "Who will unroot for 2.1" "Who will wait for custom 2.1" to get your answer. I know Ill be staying rooted until 1. a fully working custom ROM comes around or 2. root is still possible even after 2.1 OTA update.

Yeah, because it makes sense to stay with the old roms just for tethering and nandroid.
Its not like the iphone jailbreaking where undoing it loses all of your third party programs and customizations to the phone. The only real reasons to even root an android phone are tethering, backups and custom roms.
stock 2.1 > all of these custom roms. Unless you absolutely NEED tethering there is no plausible reason to stay with the old roms.
The majority of Hero owners will update as soon as they know about it.
However, the vast majority of users of this forum (and others) will wait to update until there's a complete custom ROM out for 2.1. It doesn't make any sense to update from an optimized custom 1.5 (or 1.6+) ROM to a stock 2.1 with some crappy apps added in, when you could wait for a few hours and get an optimized and custom 2.1 ROM.

I think there will be a few folks that will update, but most of the people on this forum ARE regulars, and I think they'll probably be patient and wait for a custom ROM before unrooting. The talent we've got in this community will get a custom ROM out very quickly anyway I imagine.
Im gonna be waiting and with the speed and how far along our 2.1 builds are we will probably have 2.1 sooner than Sprint's update anyway

Look around you, the best you can hope for is a new leaked rom. The only 2.1 rom we have is dead in the water with too many bugs to truly be used day to day.
Realistically the first real working 2.1 rom will be at least a week after the official.

Hopes of Froyo

Now that our hopes of getting FroYo is going down, is CyanogenMod 6.1 Final the best bet?
I just unrooted my phone because of Wi-Fi and Google Market issues.
No wifi issue here with superfroyo. And the market issue can you fix. Just delete the market cache.

Yeah, because from what I know CM6 doesn't officialy support Legend? Correct me if I'm wrong. There are issues with the LED Notifications, etc.

Legend is getting Froyo. Still acting like an impatient child. It's ready when it's ready. I don't want non-Sense UI. I don't want to downgrade my HTC thank you. I will wait for Froyo, and a bit longer to for it to be rooted, that is al..
lol i wont froyo too
If CM6.1 releases before FroYo for HTC Legend, I'm going the CM6.1 way.
If you see the other thread, I was the one telling someone that FroYo WILL come but the question is 'WHEN'?
We don't want to have to wait till its 2011.
Not starting an argument, that's all.
Also, removing sense isn't really a 'downgrade' as you put it. Better Batterly Life. Have you even tried Launcher PRO/ ADW.Launcher?

Why would HTC say that 2.2 is coming when it isn't ?
For a laugh ? In order to show the world how unreliable they are ?
No !
Froyo is coming but since the Legend has never been one of their flagship phones and relatively few people own it how many people do you think they'll dedicate to the project ? They do have other business to attend to as well you know.
All you have to do is have a little paitence and get your obviously fragile emotions under control. Doom and gloom will get you nowhere.

2.3????

guesses? rumors? news? anyone? lots of hype about this. but it kinda seems like vibrant is gonna get left in the dust seeing as how we are still on 2.1. from what i have been reading, 2.3 (gingerbread) will be out within a week! so us vibrant users will be 2 versions behind! The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.

I understand why they pushed it out to us, but still if they have 2.2.1 on the Epic then we should, at the very least, have seen one or two leaked builds with 2.2.1. So far all of our post "shutup" release's have all been 2.2 and those have even stopped coming.
I guess my main reason for posting was not really complaining as much as could we rip the Epic apart and use it in our custom ROM's?

Krylon360 mentioned that Samsung changed their ports they used for their ROM updates so they have had issues trying to find the ROMs.
Does the Galaxy S 4G ship with 2.2.1 or still 2.2? If so, then the old Vibrant may have just been passed over (hopefully only temporarily).
The Epic shipps with Eclair. It just got its FroYo update, and it's 2.2.1 instead of just 2.2.
2.2.1 on Galaxy S phones runs much better than 2.2 (which has worse performance than JI6 on our phones, IMHO).
The reason why we don't have 2.2.1 is because so many people cried about the Vibrant following the Vibrant 4G announcement and T-Mobile/Samsung wanted to save face.
The fact that they pushed 2.2 out and they haven't heard many complains about KA6 from customers (I haven't seen many on FB/Twitter/T-Mo Forums) means that getting 2.2.1 out to Vibrant 3G users is probably one of their lowest priorities.

never heard that, and 2.2.1 is on the nexus one so it is not an upgrade for 4G reasons. The OS version really doesn't do anything for connectivity.

Bought New EVO Shift with 2.2 from Sam's Club

So today my brother and mother both got phone upgrades.
My mom got the Motorola Photon (which comes unlocked) and my brother got an EVO Shift. I too have the Shift, along with a close friend of mine. Both my friend's and my Shift have been rooted and are running CM7 with the x99 kernel.
When I was looking at my brother's Shift, I noticed that it was still running Sense 2.0 (I believe) along with Android 2.2. It was not forced to the 2.3 update yet.
At the moment, it is off and charging.
Hopefully when I turn it back on, it'll remain 2.2 and should be rootable.
That said, just made this thread to announce that my brother got the Shift from Sam's Club ($25) with Android 2.2, and not 2.3.
I should be able to root this right? Why didn't his come with 2.3 or will it upgrade when I turn it back on?
Personally, I rooted mine via the command line, and my friend's with the GUI tool.
If it was 2.2 when you turned it off, it will be 2.2 when you turn it on.. You would have to manually accept the update. As far as why it's still on froyo, pure luck! Tell him to count his blessings and root.

All right awesome.
This is the first time we have ever bought phones outside of a Sprint store, maybe it had to do with Sam's or something.
This will be the 3rd Shift I root.

It was partially luck, partially part of the policy in stores. FIFO, First In First Out for the store stock. That Sam's club might not move a lot of Shifts. So there stock is older, like crump said count your blessings . No it will not auto update. But just to make sure no one does anything dumb. Go into menu-settings-System updates-HTC software update , then uncheck Scheduled check. It will ask you if your sure you want to turn it off, yes you want to turn it off. This way no one does anything dumb, like take a prompted update. Also, my advice Root it .
AND repeat tell him not to accept any OTA updates!

I will say, when i get my shift, i will accept an OTA, but i would most likely manually update it. I love gingerbread 2.3.3 with sense 2.1. I thing its better than CM7. I think CM7 is good, but its not for me, i like sense over any custom rom. Many people will disagree, even try to fight with me, im just gonna say it now and get it over with, i get it, you think sense stinks, idc, dont bother starting anything with me. I wont take it kindly.

well if your going to accept the ota updates why are you on this site then since you cant root it? but there are awesome sense roms like Mik in my opinion is the best. cant stand CM7 mainly due to the lock screen, camera app and i enjoy rosie very much on sense.

Hah I like this guy! My main reason that I don't run CM& or any of the other AOSP variations is that dam goofy lock screen! either version the spinny one or the one you pull across,up or down the screen EEEWWWWW! Just Havin fun but seriously I don't care for it!
Well no matter what peoples Rom choices are, I'm sure they'll find something here on XDA .

I get the benefit of being rooted and using GB via a custom rom from here at XDA. I get way more usage from being perm rooted than I ever would accepting an OTA upgrade and then only being limited to temp root right now. But whatever floats your boat. But I for one just don't see the logic of your statement.

I see what your saying, and there is a place for me on here, i know a lot about the evo shift on 2.3.3, and if someone gets a shift from sprint (which comes with 2.3.3 now) i can help them. I am just gonna have to decide when i get the phone.

There are 4 variations of unlocking your phone with CM7, and if you don't like those. Try Widgetlocker.
Hey guys, I'm bringing this thread back up because my brother's phone now can't make calls/texts or receive calls/texts
His data still works (Internet, etc)
It started last Wednesday.
Should I unroot, then call Sprint, or what?
Also, just *2 to call Sprint and have them fix it?
Thanks.
