2.1 coming next month? - Hero CDMA General

just found this website saying the hero will get 2.1 sometime next month
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=16225&news=HTC+Hero+Android+OS+2.1+Upgrade+Droid+Eris

Although its showing a Sprint Hero pic, the rumored Hero update for March is for the Euro Hero, not for our Hero, for which, you can read this thread.
Sprint Tweet on 2.1 for Hero/Moment
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633985

We (Sprint users) won't see the update next month. Sprint has already said that they will release their update sometime in the 2nd Quarter (Apr-Jun). The delay is so that they can add/optimize their bloatware garbage that most of us end up uninstalling anyway...

Not like anyone is gunna unroot and update anyway besides well have it before Sprint even thinks about realeasing it maybe even bored of it lol

Pretty much everyone will unroot for 2.1. What makes you think people are going to stick with old roms or buggy 2.0+ when they can have the real 2.1? Im sure once some decent custom roms for 2.1+ start surfacing people will start using them but until then stock 2.1 > Rooted 1.5.
That said sprint has already officially said Q2 just a couple days ago. Regardless of what the rumor mills say no update next month.

I imagine that a lot of people will indeed wait until the XDA devs release their own 2.1 update. Many, if not most, will not upgrade to a new 2.1 official release if they don't know if it can be rooted.

I seriously doubt that anyone here (besides you) will unroot for the update. Why? Because the root hole will almost certainly be closed and may not be able to be rooted again. Eris owners still do not have root. That is something that most people here will not give up. When the update arrives, the incredible devs here will have it working "with" root within a couple of days and that is the route most will take.

Well to be honest, I am rooted and I will NOT be unrooting for 2.1. Matter of fact I will be running 2.1 sooner than sprint will be releasing it. But once they do, I will be running a customized 2.1 which will be better than Sprints simply because it will be optimized and without all the bloatware I don't want. There's no way I would want to give up having root. Just my 2 cents though.

I doubt it, not very many people would be willing to give up root just to have something they can have sooner than sprint is releasing it, without knowing that they can get root back. Just doesn't make much sense.

Hahahaha, funny. No. Make a poll and ask "Who will unroot for 2.1" "Who will wait for custom 2.1" to get your answer. I know Ill be staying rooted until 1. a fully working custom ROM comes around or 2. root is still possible even after 2.1 OTA update.

Yeah, because it makes sense to stay with the old roms just for tethering and nandroid.
Its not like the iphone jailbreaking where undoing it loses all of your third party programs and customizations to the phone. The only real reasons to even root an android phone are tethering, backups and custom roms.
stock 2.1 > all of these custom roms. Unless you absolutely NEED tethering there is no plausible reason to stay with the old roms.

The majority of Hero owners will update as soon as they know about it.
However, the vast majority of users of this forum (and others) will wait to update until there's a complete custom ROM out for 2.1. It doesn't make any sense to update from an optimized custom 1.5 (or 1.6+) ROM to a stock 2.1 with some crappy apps added in, when you could wait for a few hours and get an optimized and custom 2.1 ROM.

I think there will be a few folks that will update, but most of the people on this forum ARE regulars, and I think they'll probably be patient and wait for a custom ROM before unrooting. The talent we've got in this community will get a custom ROM out very quickly anyway I imagine.

Im gonna be waiting and with the speed and how far along our 2.1 builds are we will probably have 2.1 sooner than Sprint's update anyway

Look around you, the best you can hope for is a new leaked rom. The only 2.1 rom we have is dead in the water with too many bugs to truly be used day to day.
Realistically the first real working 2.1 rom will be at least a week after the official.

Stock 2.2 eventually?

I know Froyo was just recently announced, and the incredible has yet to be rooted, but assuming that it eventually does get rooted, is it unreasonable to assume there will be a way to get a stock 2.2 ROM onto a rooted incredible?
I just read over on engadget that "most" HTC devices will get Froyo by the end of the year, and being a sense-based device, I would assume it would be receiving a Sense-ified 2.2. Thanks for all the help.

Just a few threads down this is being discussed. It looks like Evo, Droid, Incredible will be getting it in June. This is not a huge leap like it was going from 1.6 to 2.1. It shouldn't take too long for this to be rolled to all.

The Droid Incredible and the Droid are two different phones by two different manufacturers.
For our phones there's no specific information, just that Droid Incredible and other flagship phones are a priority.
I would guess that if the EVO gets it, we are too, considering they're both CDMA, SenseUI, and are the flagship android phones for the carrier they're on. it wouldn't make sense not to.
Yes yes, as I pointed out in that thread. I was piggy backing off of your hope and optimism. My bad.

I never implied we were getting it in June. All I ever said was that the N1 and Droid were getting it in June, because they're both stock Android.
The only way we're getting it in June is if we manage to root by then and can install a port.
Even if we don't, we'll be among the first SenseUI phones to get it. When exactly that is depends on a lot of things, how different the API for 2.2 is, how long it takes HTC to produce Sense for 2.2, how long carrier testing takes, whether there's an early leak, etc
Well I can tell you this much, jit and sense do not play nice together, so it may be awhile for HTC to get all the bugs worked out.
Its supposed to be way faster than even 2.1 so on our device it should be awesome. I just wish (though I doubt HTC will do it) they would give us the option to turn off Sense UI. Its nice but it really should be optional. That would make 2.2 complete for me without rooting. Otherwise this phone will never be complete for me until rooted.

Sorry if this question has been asked in any of the other threads involving Froyo - but are there any specific reasons why SenseUI and JIT don't work well together? Is this based on experiences with custom ROMs for other devices using JIT and SenseUI or is this something that's a bit more officially recognized?

This is based off of others using a incomplete version of JIT from eclair and attempting to use it on eclair.
as soon as my incredible has root with custom recovery i will be releasing a 2.2 custom froyo rom based on stock 2.2 as well as porting any 2.2 sense leaks that are released. all we need is root

So i got one with root and one thats rooted and I gotta say this yes all these posts whining need to stop. But I do want to say why not? There aren't any roms as fast as this right now and everytime that there is a good one it gets ****ed up or forgotten before its done. The only thing that has any hope is the froyo thing right now because all the devs are working on it together.
I hate to admit it but I agree one hundred percent with dark shnieder. A million times we all said dont install the new signed 2.1 releAse and this shows that ignorance is the downfall for those who do not listen. Do yourselfs a favor all u ppl who installed stock 2.1... when the community tells you not to do something don't ****ing do it. Now deal with your ignorance until 2.1 is rooted.
I don't care one way or the other, I've had working 2.1 for months and I am very happy with it. If you were dumb enough to flash a ROM without researching it first, you get what you deserve. I've been running damages ROM's since they came out and have had little to no issues. I am currently running 2.08.1 and have no problems at all. So, if they come out with another update to DC or not, I'm am very happy with the ROM I have.
Hell, Ive been running ports of Android versions since Donut started to get ported (it wasnt a daily for me since I couldnt get SMS working) then played around with early 2.1 builds. I can say I was one of the few that actually saw all these 2.1 ROMs evolve from pretty basic stuff, kinda like what Froyo is right now.
I learned my lesson back with the PSP: "do not update to the latest and greatest if you know the community will come up with better stuff in days if not hours of that release".
Not everyone flashed the 2.1 RUU. I took my phone in for service and it was deemed hardware failure. They gave me a brand new phone and installed 2.1 on it without asking me if I wanted it. I asked for another phone with 1.5 and they said no LOL. So I am stuck with 2.1 stock until someone figures out how to root it. And I can't wait, because some of the ROMs I have been reading about sound real nice.

I would wait on the root and keep it private until froyo gets released, the rooting process you guys do come up with might get heard by the wrong person and they could patch it in froyo. this is a common practice when it comes to hacking devices that i have seen, once exploits are found generally the dev waits for the next update that way it can be rooted as well. Just my opinion...

Usually, root is device specific (I think). If Google releases Froyo after our "2.1 root", it most likely wont be patched since the Hero is not on the list to get that upgrade.

Looks like the Captivate OTA is a bit of a clusterf***

If you go over to the Captivate forum, many many many people are reporting failed updates, including possible brickage in some instances. There doesn't seem to be a common thread to the failure (root, lagfixed, custom ROM, etc.); it's just widespread and seemingly random. Some people have stock Captivates that won't update successfully, while others have updated rooted phones and maintained root.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say "T-Mobile and Samsung, please take your time and make the Vibrant update perfect."

Not only that, but also if you read AC at all they are planning another OTA for the Epic because the last OTA slowed their 3G speeds waaayyy doownn
That's what I said in the other thread about the update. MAYBE, just maybe T-Mobile held off on the update for the GPS/other fixes just to see how the update did on ATT and Verizon and go from there. I'm not as upset over the fact that we didn't get any update, so I agree with you. Take your time Samsung and T-Mo and make this update awesome and worthy to hold us until 2.2 gets here

Read that tonight too. Other carriers are "Pawns" while T-Mo users wait while the bugs get fixed and the others have to deal with them maybe?
Wonder what this will do to everyone here who have been endlessly complaining about T-Mobile not updating fast enough like all of the other companies.
....Probably nothing now that I think about it.
Maybe T-Mobile is shooting for quality. I just wish they'd tell us about it instead of being super tight lipped. A simple "the update did not meet our QA standards" message would do the job. Saying absolutely nothing is only hurting them. Same for Samsung. Give us a release date for Froyo, even if it's Dec. 27th. They've got nothing to lose since people in the know are already being persuaded to not buy the phone and people not in the know are still going to buy it because of all the pretty colors.
What sucks is, them having to fix this problem is probably only going to slow down the time frame of when we should get our update.
My gfs captivate updated without a problem, I guess shes in the minority though

is it possible that tmobile is not working enough on asking samsung to update our vibrant that's why it is taking a long time for them to update our phone? vibrant is the very first to be released and why is it the last one to get an update?? or is it because there isnt much vibrant users and thus makes samsung less focused on updating it? ughh

Seriously, someone should buy the programmers that work for these vendors an actual phone to test their releases on.
A lot of peole have been wondering if T-Mo/Verizon/ATT test their phones before launch. The only one that's had little issue is Sprints Epic. Samsung pushed for this device to be released in the States, even though people have been complaining about the GPS issues..

Jk2 is a build number of the most recent (and most important since its specifically for vibrants) froyo. Before this all the froyo roms out has been built off of other variations on diff models/carrier.
The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

It doesn't matter if they do or not. Like I said above, "We can port it"

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.
Akaskriller say he has an official 2.2 froyo ready for those who donates to his site.. I saw the vid it looks good

Tough call. I would say 1 year till official release...
mmmm im thinkin honeycomb (3.0) will be out within a year. prob not for our phones tho. we will have to upgrade to the we will have to upgrade to the galaxy t hahaha
2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

Froyo was out in January, wasn't it...?
That's more than 2-4 months ago.
I don't ever expect to see 2.3 from Sammy. We'll honestly be lucky if we ever see an official & working 2.2.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.
I don't care what anyone else says, I happy with my froyo.

actually when i bought the phone i got ****in played man. haha the people at the t-mo store told me i would get all the updates as soon as they came out, and that i would get 4 g on my vibrant. thats when i didnt know much about the phone, or phones at all. but now that im doing my research, im finding out that none of that stuff is true! im liking t-mo. but dont like how they lied to me to buy the vibrant. i was even looking right at the g2. like 'what about this one?' 'na man! you want the vibrant' i love my vibrant. but i also am gonna want 4g and firmware updates in the future.

Even the iPhone 3G gets Gingerbread before the N1...

Just looking at Dailymobile.se and came across:
http://dailymobile.se/2011/01/08/android-2-3-ported-to-iphone-3g-video-demo/
Seems that the we N1 owners really are having to wait
Dude I am running Gingerbread on my N1 for to weeks now...
i'm pretty sure he means OTA

Well the iphone certainly didnt get it over the air either. Just root and install it already. There are plenty of fine versions to choose from with features the ota certainly will never have.
Pathetic

Check the dev section much? N1 has had Gingerbread roms for a while now.
And if you're talking about an OTA... I didn't realize the iPhone got an OTA?
Not going to happen...
I'm imagining (okay, praying) there was a 30-day exclusive on GB given to the Nexus S. Release date for NS was 12/16, so that'd delay the N1 OTA until about 1/16. So that's the end of this week...
great thread we've got here
yeah man... growing long bear waiting for GB...
I hope google takes it upon themselves one of these days to get the damn update process together and get official updates out to non vanilla phones at least a month or 2 after the update is available (stock phones should have had this from day one). I should be rooting my phone out of fun and not necessity to get the latest update (well this doesn't actually apply to me because I did do it out of fun with the old command prompt back in march, but to some folks it's necessity or not even an option at all).
what a useless thread.... iPhone's Gingerbread is a mod, just like the ones for the N1.... geeeeeeezzz
Lemme know when Apple sends out an OTA update of Google Gingerbread to all iPhone users.

This is ridiculous.
And I don't even know why you're all still waiting for the damned official release.
Who gives a f****? Root, flash amon_ra 2.2.1, flash CyanogenMod 7 nightly et voilĂ .
I think either these people are trolls or insane 10 year old brats.
We've all been running Gingerbread for quite some time now, and they still feel the need to complain when there is a hacked port to the iPhone?
There are a few trolls around here lately...easy to ID by their posts!
