Bought New EVO Shift with 2.2 from Sam's Club - EVO Shift 4G General

So today my brother and mother both got phone upgrades.
My mom got the Motorola Photon (which comes unlocked) and my brother got an EVO Shift. I too have the Shift, along with a close friend of mine. Both my friend's and my Shift have been rooted and are running CM7 with the x99 kernel.
When I was looking at my brother's Shift, I noticed that it was still running Sense 2.0 (I believe) along with Android 2.2. It was not forced to the 2.3 update yet.
At the moment, it is off and charging.
Hopefully when I turn it back on, it'll remain 2.2 and should be rootable.
That said, just made this thread to announce that my brother got the Shift from Sam's Club ($25) with Android 2.2, and not 2.3.
I should be able to root this right? Why didn't his come with 2.3 or will it upgrade when I turn it back on?
Personally, I rooted mine via the command line, and my friend's with the GUI tool.

If it was 2.2 when you turned it off, it will be 2.2 when you turn it on.. You would have to manually accept the update. As far as why it's still on froyo, pure luck! Tell him to count his blessings and root.

All right awesome.
This is the first time we have ever bought phones outside of a Sprint store, maybe it had to do with Sam's or something.
This will be the 3rd Shift I root.

It was partially luck, partially part of the policy in stores. FIFO, First In First Out for the store stock. That Sam's club might not move a lot of Shifts. So there stock is older, like crump said count your blessings . No it will not auto update. But just to make sure no one does anything dumb. Go into menu-settings-System updates-HTC software update , then uncheck Scheduled check. It will ask you if your sure you want to turn it off, yes you want to turn it off. This way no one does anything dumb, like take a prompted update. Also, my advice Root it .

AND repeat tell him not to accept any OTA updates!

I will say, when i get my shift, i will accept an OTA, but i would most likely manually update it. I love gingerbread 2.3.3 with sense 2.1. I thing its better than CM7. I think CM7 is good, but its not for me, i like sense over any custom rom. Many people will disagree, even try to fight with me, im just gonna say it now and get it over with, i get it, you think sense stinks, idc, dont bother starting anything with me. I wont take it kindly.

I get the benefit of being rooted and using GB via a custom rom from here at XDA. I get way more usage from being perm rooted than I ever would accepting an OTA upgrade and then only being limited to temp root right now. But whatever floats your boat. But I for one just don't see the logic of your statement.

There are 4 variations of unlocking your phone with CM7, and if you don't like those. Try Widgetlocker.
Hey guys, I'm bringing this thread back up because my brother's phone now can't make calls/texts or receive calls/texts
His data still works (Internet, etc)
It started last Wednesday.
Should I unroot, then call Sprint, or what?
Also, just *2 to call Sprint and have them fix it?
Thanks.

I must say, I took my HTC Incredible back to stock 2.1 then had OTA installed (from verizon). And I must say, What are these people thinking????. SkyRaider & CM are much better. So true. ALL these devs do a FAR FAR better job than the stock one does. It could be because that is how a corporate shop runs (err too far on the side caution) or it could be because there is a difference in doing something for money and doing it because you like it.

Yes they do. And I think HTC or Motorola should contact them. But one of my favorite saying from a movie is "Human knowledge belongs to the world". At least most open source people aren't out to plant bugs. But sometimes you still have to be worried.

This is just a testament to the fact that people are born with gifts and are hardly developed by being taught. Which is why I constantly express my gratitude to the developers we have working for themselves, yet (mostly) willing to share their creation for the betterment of others.

Not to be an ass, but If you don't see it here chances are it's not available yet. I believe XDA to be the central hub of information (even if the news originates somewhere else). If there is news it won't be hidden on the Development page.
Look in the forums of the other Galaxy S variants to see the status of Froyo on this Samsung line of devices. I believe it will be a little while before one is released for a CDMA version.

You were nicer than I was going to be, so I just decided to just bite my tongue, and let someone else respond first.
This is my first smartphone, so instead of this thread just dropping to the bottom, maybe myself and others could learn something.
What exactly needs to be done with Froyo (or any ROM) before it can be adapted to a particular phone, in this case, the fascinate?
I suppose keeping it in relative lay-speak would be nice as well.
Having samsung release a 2.2 ROM for the US Galaxy S phones would be a start.
The euro variants have a different button layout among other things that makes life harder for our development.

We need samsung to release the 2.2 update, and that will give you 2.2
As far as custom roms / CyanogenMod 6 on the fascinate, we will need the 2.6.32 kernel source code to drop (and pray that Samsung will release the right source when they release that code) and then a bit of developing.
you really think there will even be a 2.2? Personally, I think it would be updated straight to Gingerbread
There's a post from kaos on the kaos rom for eris forms stating that he had 2.2 running on his fascinate before it bricked, but that he MIGHT be developing a rom for the fascinate.
I'll see if I can track down the post.

We'll be so lucky if Kaos gets one working with the Fascinate, I had an Eris prior to the Fascinate and I was talking to him about developing for it, looks like he found someone to help him out.
His ROM > all others once they start rolling out.
Coming from an eris I would love to have punk kaos rom on my fascinate.
I'm coming from an eris too, and had kaos on mine, and about creamed myself after reading that, hahaha.....Even if kaos came out with a 2.1, id be all set.
LOL, same here. I got a late start with KaosFroyo, coming in at V30, after I discovered that one-touch root was finally available for the Eris. I had one month of the best Android experience possible on an Eris before I ordered up my new Fascinate. I wish I had the cash to buy a Fascinate for punk kaos, so he could start creating what could only become the best Fascinate ROM ever!
EDIT: Just saw the post where he said he's already working on one. Awesome!!! I'll DEFINITELY be donating to his coffee fund once he starts pumping out a ROM for this bad boy. Hmm, what will he name it though? I vote for Kaoscinate!
Yes, its true. I've been working on a 2.2 rom for the Fascinate. I got it to boot but was in the very early stages of dev when my phone let out a puff of smoke and died.
I got the phone through a sponsor, and have returned the phone to them and they're trying to get me another one. Hopefully they will soon and I can keep on truckin

Well, if you're sure
Just sent over some coffee cash for all the hard work on KaosFroyo, since I never got around to actually donating before. And also, I'm not done with it yet, as I'm loading up V35-1 on my deactivated Eris to let a co-worker with a live Eris play with. She's unhappy with 2.1, so she might want me to give her phone the same treatment, since she's stuck in a 2-year contract.
Anyway, looking forward to you getting a replacement Fascinate. Did it literally start smoking before it died? Dang, I knew these phones were hot, but that's just a bit over the top.

We will get more newer gb sense roms when a working kernel is ready. It slowed when tbolt came out, but the inc 2 will not slow us, neither a just that much of an upgrade imo. When our kernel is ready, you will see many varieties of ports for the dinc.

we'll get more ports when we get a gingersense leak. That rom is so outdated haha virus new port based on the htc kingdom sounds like its going to be a huge success for the evo.
A bit of perspective
Although I can feel where you are coming from on the fading of interest I wanted to chime in here to relay my recent experience with the incredible and its devs. My wife and I both had eris phones and were both rooted and running custom roms. The phone unrooted is almost unbearably slow and painful. Rooted is much better but still the phone itself is just so antiquated. I pushed Verizon to up my upgrade date and recently got the Thunderbolt. My wife finally got fed up with the eris and her upgrade date was too far out to push up so I got her a used incredible locally for about $170. Now comes the part that blew me away. The guy I got it from had it stock and never rooted. I did the research and was, as i said blown away with the sheer simplicity of the rooting and clockwork recovery rom experience. Thats all aside from the beauty, speed, screen brightness, perfect size, and overall satisfaction of the phone. I truly almost prefer it over my thunderbolt. The rom factory may be slowing down but this phone is an amazing device overall and the devs that have put time into it are to be commended in the highest. I can only hope that cyanogen and the others make my thunderbolt as amazing of an experience.
cant wait for gingersense. running CM7 2.3.4 but miss sense.

I disagree. Several awesome ROMS are out there and it seems like we get another new ROM every week or so. Admittedly, some are more awesome than others, but development is defintely still on-going. That's the beauty of this device - it was so far ahead of it's time.

Windows is a non issue.. once you flash an android rom (w/ Linux kernel) the windows phone os doesnt matter as its just hardware at that point. Android rom uses the Linux kernel to communicate w/ hw.

I have noticed things are slowing down too. I got a Thunderbold day 1, which I love, no looking back for me, but my wife still has a Dinc, and I am always looking to update, it is currently running Myns Warm Z, not much else right now.
I am not sure it is slowing down so much as people are finding that what they have the love. I personally still flash a few roms every now and then but I always tend to go back to one... because It has the most of what I love. I think that always happens. I use to see this when I was running windows mobile htc 8125, people said that everything was slowing down but I think it is more the fact that you have know tried most of the ROMs. When I first got this phone I went through and flashed as many roms as I could. a few of them I am not going to try again until they get a few more levels up since I was not satisfied but there were a few that I really liked and I have flashed them when they come out with a new one. BUT I do always go back to my main rom.
So after all that I dont know if it is slowing down since I see new roms out every once in a while. I think that I just dont have the interest to flash them as often since I can say, I have already tried that. I will wait 3 more version before flashing that again...
You may have noticed that I didnt use one rom name since I do not want to discourage any ROM developer. They all do an "Incredible" job here no pun intended. Keep up the GREAT work and happy flashing.
SoBBie
I hear what you're saying, but there is still a lot of great work going on. The release of skyraider 4.0 was huge, and there are still a ton of roms being actively supported. Between CM7, MIUI, LiquidMetal, the z roms, and the stock sense roms, you can get just about any look you want.
It seems though, that most new ROM work, including ports, are the same old bases reworked with a twist. CM7 is nice, but doesn't have Sense.. The desireZ ports are nice, but still 2.2.. as with Skyraider.
I'm sure not knocking any devs work.. I use them and donate, just wish we had some new work coming our way... especially GingerSense!
I still see lots of development for the Inc. I am definitely really glad I got rid of my Fascinate for it two months ago.
Just my $.02
LOL, I'll have my ROM up and running soon... coming out of alpha soon...

Official HTC Droid Incredible Gingerbread OTA

Well the HTC EVO 4G received their official OTA yesterday from sprint and we are scheduled to get it by the end of this month as well which means custom gingersense kernels will come soon after. Just putting this out there for people who want to know the news about the update and yes the OTA will break root.
Right on, which also means that the Unrevoked team will have to work on their root exploits AFTER the OTA to once again achieve root. Hopefully it won't be like the last OTA (or 2 OTA's ago?) where it broke root, and there were nothing but threads about not having it...you'd a thought people were going to die, and all they had to do was wait about a week or so.
My question is, can it put you S-ON? Because even the RUU can't do that. So even if you were on a stock rom, with S-OFF, and received the OTA, you could still root through CWM.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
What does that mean for us that are rooted and running custom Rom's? If I were to just let it run the OTA with root and custom Rom? Would it just overwrite the whole phone with new update and replace everything on my phone with updated stock gingerbread/Rom? Or will I need to restore my stock Rom backup and then unroot the phone to s-on and then let it OTA?

yea that sucks
Sure, Sense 1.0 is kinda lame. But its probably for the best. It's definitely lighter on resources, and the phone manual would still apply. Not much of an issue since the Inc isn't shipping anymore. But the EVO is. So they might have had to rewrite some of the manual for sense 2.1. But I think it has more to do with available memory. All these gingersense roms are great, but they sure do use a lot more.
Sent from my Synergy Rom using XDA App
I don't care what people say about Sense 2.1 on the Inc. It's working great for me. The bottom line is that the Inc isn't being made anymore, so there is absolutely NO incentive for HTC to put 2.x Sense on it. If your Inc broke for instance, and you could get an official 2.x Sense'd phone, you'd be more likely to pick up a used Inc as opposed to a newer phone. I've had my Inc going on almost a year, and I can honestly say I don't really need to "upgrade" my phone. I typically upgrade to a newer phone every year..... If I last that long! I had my ATT Fuze (aka HTC Raphael, aka Touch Pro) for like 3 or 4 months before "upgrading". Bottom line is, the Inc is a great phone, it's capable of running Sense 2.x, but HTC wouldn't be doing themselves any good to go through the effort of putting it on the Inc since it's an EOL product.....

Well the HTC EVO 4G received their official OTA yesterday from sprint and we are scheduled to get it by the end of this month as well which means custom gingersense kernels will come soon after. Just putting this out there for people who want to know the news about the update and yes the OTA will break root.

No they said by the end of Q2[which is the end of this month]
Does anyone know if the new Gingerbread with Sense running on the EVO has a better email client than the stock GB mail client (which bites)? I use SkyRaider 4 with Sense 2 on the Froyo platform, but MIUI on the GB platform with LauncherPro to make it as Sense-like as possible. Since the GB mail client neglected the 'Search' functionality, I had to buy the Enhanced Mail client (I'm and Exchange user), but there is no scrolling widget for this. A Sense-based GB rom with a Sense-based mail client would solve all my problems. Bottom line, has anyone seen the Sense Mail client on the new GB-based EVO?

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

How can it be unrootable "again"? If it was unrootable the first time, then how did we get it?

Yes, you are absolutely right. The updated ROM from Sprint will never be rooted.
NEVER. EVER.
Has anyone tried to run an old Froyo RUU on a brand new Shift that came with Gingerbread?

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

Yes, and man will never go to the moon. We will never be able to fly. Come on man .
PS. Don't knock the Site, or the Dev's. The work they do is because they want to, it's not an obligation.
after the samsung moment debacle i will never own another samsung phone. to me the epic is a moment on steroids. its still a POS lol. glad i switched to the shift

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Rooting in and of itself isn't going to make a damn bit of difference in battery life. It's what you do with the root that counts... lol, sounds like a phallic joke gone bad...
