Running android in hd2 internal flash - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I am just loving the use you android on my hd2. I finally beleive that my investment is worth it.
First of all i actually dont know what haret.exe does. what i beleive is that my windows keeps running in the background and haret.exe just make it run as a emulator for android. But then first thing that comes to my mind is that doesnt that share my ram between 2 operating system running simultaneously?
And since we have almost perfect android builds running almost everything smoothly. y havent we seen any cheif creating an internal flash rom? wudnt it work? so that i can use android as sole operating system?
Please anyone with more knowledge put some light on this feature.
thanks

ok I very rarely post here, I do alot more READING than posting but I had to chime in on this one. If I read one more post about if they are working on or is it possible or ANYTHING to do with an Android rom I'm gonna lose it. At the moment there is no android rom your right it is a virtual version running simultaneously as winmo, whether or not there will be one I'm not quite sure but I'm sure in one of the 25 stickies or 200 other posts JUST LIKE YOURS you will find your answer. Hell there isnt even a completely flawless version that runs off your sd card yet so why would someone have a flashable version. I would imagine watching the pace of development IF there is ever going to be an android flashable rom it will probably be several months down the road maybe even next year. Who knows the developers work off DONATIONS and probably have other jobs and families and lives to be living. So with all that said just be patient, if you really cant wait then start helping the dev team or donate instead of not searching for your answer and posting questions which have been asked several times

Windows Mobile is NOT running simultaneously with android... Haret shuts down the windows CE kernel and then boots up the linux kernel. There is only android using your ram when you're using android, so booting it from nand won't increase speed all that much. It will help some because memory is read from nand quicker than from the sd card, and it might help with some power consumption... but you won't get more ram available. Once your booted into android, windows mobile is no longer using any resources.

Future of HD2 Android?

I was wondering once Android on the hd2 is stable, will it be possible to flash a ROM like we do with wm or will be stuck using haret or the dualboot thing? Or is it too soon to even forecast?
As I understand atm its just running ontop of windows you dont flash android yet, but i guess they will try and get it to work as a rom eventually after they have all the driver issues sorted out and the little niggles there is but don't hold you're breathe for now mate, I wouldn't even like to say if its possible to have it as a main rom,
I believe the devs plan to have android boot from nand. Whether or not they will be successful remains to be seen. I have faith that we will have a good solution in time.
Ok cool to know! I've been running sense all day and im hooked!

It is not running on top of winmo... haret.exe shuts down the windows kernel and launches the linux kernel. Right now, they need winmo to boot first because winmo initializes a lot of the hardware. Eventually, once they have drivers that can initialize everything on its own, they can boot android from nand, but that will probably take a while. Only 1 or 2 winmo devices out of over a dozen that have android ports have android roms that can be flashed, and thats after years of development.
Personally, I prefer to keep winmo and have the ability to boot android or other linux builds when i want to. I prefer winmo, but also love android and love the fact that i can run both on my phone. Also, booting from nand doesn't really improve performance on any of the other android ports. If I wanted android full-time, I'd get an android phone... and I know some people are going to say there is no android phone with the screen or specs available for their carrier... but I can almost guarantee that by the time we have a flashable rom, there will be plenty of android phones with equal or better specs and screen for your carrier or country. I just don't see the reason to flash and get rid of winmo when you could have the best of both worlds. I guess maybe I'm just a winmo fan, but I don't know why you would have an HD2 if you weren't. Why make your phone just another android phone when you could have a dual-booting power-phone that can run both android and winmo apps. There's no playstation emulator for android!

Hi guys , has anyone tried to create Android rom for HD2
using Supersonic's ( Evo 4G ) Rom ?
I mean :
- take some parts of Ssonic rom to compare this with existing "pre"Android Rom
for HD2
Some parts should be similar so..... anyone tried ???
Don't tell me about differences hd2->SSonic because i know this.
Answer please.
It would be great if we could have something like grub, with both WinMo and Android installed, and enabling us to select which to boot right after turning the phone on! But I don't see this coming
yeah its too early to know. Imagine having an Android ROM on it that isn't fully compatible and then you get an error that won't let you hard reset or boot to the flash screen. Youd brick your phone! I think it will happen but not for maybe another year and by then I'm sure more high spec phones will be out.
How about somebody figures out how to run a barebones WM and Android on internal memory? Then it would have SD hotswap. I don't know if that is even possible though (probably not).
I've thought about this. with internal memory, I believe it is more stable and speedy than SDcard.

I too prefer the ability boot both WM and Android rather than booting Android exclusively. After using the desire rom for the past couple of days, call me crazy, but it really feels like sense on Windows Mobile with cookies home tab is more streamlined and accessible. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Android over Windows Mobile at the end of the day, but the aging WM OS still has a lot of perks.
What I'd rather see is a solution that allows you to truly dual boot WM and Android, and making jumping in and out of one for the other relatively quick and easy.

I don't see how this is all that different than any of the several apps the devs here have created to let you choose after booting whether you want to boot Android (even the build of your choice) or WinMo... I'm running it now and that app works rather flawlessly.
i just cant wait to ahve a nand android on hd2,,, its soo awesome,,,
i have installed the latest 1.7 of froyo..on hd2 qnd it rocks,...only if it were possible to ake it permaert.

[Poll] Time for a new Android HD2 section?

I think its time for a new HD2 Section... What do you think. Mods?
Rarely do I post but I do read (and seach) all the time. I believe that the initial problem with adding a section for android is that android is not at all ready for the HD2, respectively.
While I do sit back in amazement with how fast development is moving along, adding a android section would bring even more "one timers" (folks that register just to ask a question that has been answered 20 times before) and flood the boards even more than they were when the HTC-LINUX discussion was open.
Its my opinion that though android is looking spectacular at this point, until there is a reliable way to flash android to NAND or at least a build that can hold its own without making you reboot your phone over and over, the temporary solutions that the mods have decided upon should stay in place.
Id like to conclude this post by saying thank you to the team for continuing to develop the linux kernel and various builds on their free time.
Good day.

Wait until it can be flashed before you propose this. Having a ROM of android that can be flashed is better than using it through a loader.

Because they still need winmo to initialize a lot of the hardware. Only 1 or 2 winmo devices have flashable android roms out of over a dozen devices that have android ports... most having been developed for years. It will probably still be a while before there is a flashable rom... I don't see the appeal, anyways. It doesn't improve performance much, if any. And it takes away the ability to have both winmo and android on your phone. If you want to only run android, why not get an android device? By the time there is flashable android roms for the HD2, there will probably be android phones with specs and screen equal or better for all the carriers and countries people say they can't get good android phones for.
Why would you want to flash android instead of having the ability to run both winmo and android, and any other linux ports that are released? Is there any reason? I would much prefer a dual-booting power phone than making it just another android phone that probably won't run as well as a native android phone.

This is a good & thoughtful opinion, though I feel that a section just for Android will allow people to more easily access the basic information that 'one timers' want to get, so a new section might help this problem rather than making it worse.
It would keep it all in one place, which would leave the ROM development section for WinMo rom discussion only.
There have been Android sections for Xperia, Pro2, Pro, Blackstone etc while the port was much more immature than the HD2 Port.
Now almost everything is working in Android, and there's lots of discussion & various people putting builds together on a regular basis.
Due to this progress and huge level of interest, I think it's time for a separate section for Android on HD2.

Man, I seriously doubt your statement here ...
Do you have any comparative numbers to back your opinion there? Fact is, Android runs "on top" of WinMo right now. Meaning you have a complete operating system running in the background.
I really expect at least some noticeable performance improvement if an optimized android is running standalone on the HD2.

Look at the other ports on other devices. Go read the threads. Sometimes when flashed to nand they will lose some functionality until they get driers right and every initializes right.
And Android does not run on top of winmo... where do you get that from?? Android is running stand-alone while it's running. It all runs from ram... only speed difference is the speed that data gets sent to ram, which is quicker with nand, but not enough to make a big difference. Haret shuts down the windows ce kernel and boot the linux kernel. You can't have 2 kernels running at once. The windows kernel does help by initializing some hardware, but it get completely shut down. Thats why you can't just close out of android and go back to windows. Its not emulated. I've been playing with these android ports for years using haret with many different winmo devices.
Having a faster memory card probably make some difference, too, but again, only with certain tasks. Most things I don't think you'd see a huge speed difference in actual operation.
I think YES !!!
i don't think that an android section would get more people asking for android builds. Especially if you add a sticky in top of the section regarding the progress of android and that it's not finished yet. I think it should be a android development thread only so people that are interested in the development know were to look.
Futhermore i think there should be a good explenation on how to install android and get it working so people can easily try android for themselves and see that it's not nearly opperational yet.
last but not least. there'll always be people asking if android is finished. These people are just too ignorant to recognize how a forum works and read a thread. They are not actually interested in the progress of all the great developers here but just want a quick fix to show of to their friends. They should brick there device and buy an android phone.
don't let the people that are really interested suffer from the ignorant fools.
sorry but i needed to get that of my chest.
that's my opinion,
greets Boris.
I think its getting ridiculous here. Please mods open a new Android HD2 section. There is so much information out there for Android on the HD2 its getting messy in this section. The poll tells you what the people want.

Hahahahaha, I just love how they put this thread in the android section, i laugh every time i see it
Thanks for adding this new forum ! I always like how XDA staff is listening to their users.
I see a problem about this forum though:
'HD2 Android Development' naming is erroneous for following two reasons:
-Most elementary progress is seated in the kernel - which has nothing to do with android in the first place. The kernel is Linux and not Android.
-Android is not the only userland based on Linux that is available. As seen here there is ubuntu and other stuff.
I therefore vote we rename the forum to 'HD2 Linux and Android development'
I have seen a ubuntu thread already where the user complains he is actually posting in the wrong subforum due to this naming problem.

I think we'll get an android section long before theres a flashable rom... it could be years before theres a rom. I think only one other winmo device has an android rom that can be flashed. Personally, I don't see the point in flashing android... I think the great part about these android ports is the fact that you can run WinMo and android on the same device. I don't think flashing even improves performance all that much. If I wanted an android device, I would just buy one. I like running multiple os's on the same device.
The current android port isn't really just an app running on winmo... yes, you run haret, but that shuts down the windows kernel and starts up the linux kernel. Having android flashed on nand will not improve speed or performance very much except the fact that info can be moved to ram from nand a little quicker than it takes for info to be moved from memory card to ram, but that will not make a very noticeable difference. They will also have to get all the components to initialize without winmo before they can make a flashable rom.... that will take time. Like I said, even after years of developers porting android to winmo devices, only 1 or 2 devices have flashable roms out of more than a dozen devices... and none of them really get a performance boost from running it from nand, so I don't see the point.
We will need an android development section before we have a android rom. We're at the point where we should probably get a new section soon, especially once we start getting more devs making android or other linux builds.

[Q] Simple question - NAND & Android on HD2 - Why we still cannot get working NAND v.

[Q] Simple question - NAND & Android on HD2 - Why we still cannot get working NAND v.
Well, my question is simple :
Why we still dont have NAND version of Android ?
Is it problem with .... drivers or anything else ?
Please tell me what is the problem. Why its so hard to develop working NAND Rom ?
screen orentation sensor makes the screen lag ... and there are still some major bugs
Why is there so much craving for a NAND version?
What's wrong with having Android running from the SDcard?
As long as that still doesn't function 100% (screen/g sensor/footprints in sense etc..), why would you want to have a Nand version? I doubt that that will actually change anything.

I guess the myth is if it's NAND then battery will be better which I really doubt.
Sorry but it's not an answer.
Many people want to have Nand version and it's their choice , but
it could be a good idea to tell us why there is so many problems
to create this kind of rom.
What parts are missing ....
What needs to be compiled ...
What to repaired...
Need some tech informations about this .
Who knows , many people is to busy to try create whole rom , but
there is many of us who knows programming and could Help .
But if someone will tell us what is a biggest problem ...
Linux was creating by many people , so maybe this time we can find solution together ?

So what if i will use search.
I will get 2,000 posts with small ammount of answers.
Will be easier if any dev will completly with details
answer this question.
It will stop another 2,000 posts to occur .
Many questions - one answer.
It isn't working because only a handful are working on it while the rest whine and think a lame post begging for an eta will motivate the devs. If you want it done pick up a book and start learning about linux coding. It isn't done yet because nobody tries on their own.
Just because the initial development was lightning quick doesn't guarantee it will all tidily come together at the same rate.
Do you remember what appeared on your HD2 when you first turned it on? Windoze f'ing mobile. Be grateful for what you have.
To motivate the coders even a bit more you could create a "Who will be the 1st Android NAND coder" thread where users can donate cash for the price money.
The 1st coder who does so will win the cash.
Me.. I've donated cash already to some of the coders here, and I can wait till we have a stable good working version.

You know ... it could be a great idea .
If someone trusted will keep grand prize for this so why not ???
First person that will make a working rom will get a BIG PRIZE ....
might work .
After testing, if we see that it really works ....
I could donate if someone will start something like this.
I don't know how fair it would be to say the first to make an android would get the prize... Most likely it will be a cook making the rom using the work of many developers. It will be the same group of devs that got android working in the first place that will get it working on nand.... Dcordes, cotulla, netripper, etc... Might as well just donate. I'm sure it will be a group effort by them.
Nand is difficult because we will need a lot of new drivers to initialize the hardware... Right now winmo is used to initialize most hardware for android. I don't understand why you think it shouldn't be difficult... Look at other winmo devices that can run android... Only 2 out of a dozen can even boot from nand... And the nand versions are less functional than the versions run from sd card. It takes a LOT more work to get everything working on its own from nand without winmo to initialize hardware. I would expect the same with the first versions of nand booting for the hd2 also.... It will probably be nowhere near as functional as booting from sd until a lot of development is done. Be patient... It could be a long time before we have a nand bootable android that's anywhere as stable and functional as the sd bootable builds we currently have. I also doubt that speed or battery life will be much better with nand, if at all. We have great speed & batteries with our sd versions already... It will be hard to beat that with new nand versions, especially since many drivers for nand will probably have to be made from scratch. But you never know... We have some great devs and I've already been surprised with what they've accomplished.

I guess you'll have to wait until the day you hire your own Android HD2 developer, then you can have them working on things that -you- want.
seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. I'm actually pondering about creating some sort of donations thread just to fix particular problems.
But, because this is a community driven effort, we are at the mercy of whatever developers/chefs want to have. If you don't like that, you may want to consider becoming a developer/chef yourself..

There is no android app to shut down android and launch windows kernel, so that possibility is very far away if it's even possible. First they would need to get android booting off nand, which is a ways off, then a haret type app would need to be written for android that can launch the window ce kernel, which may be very difficult because windows is not open sourced, and then a version of winmo that will work with that will need to be developed.
I don't see this as being very likely to happen. If you want nand android, you're going to lose winmo.
Personally, I don't see why everyone wants to boot android from nand... It works so well from sd and you get to run multiple os on your phone. And looking at the history of nand booting android on winmo phones, the nand versions are usually less functional and don't really improve speed or battery that much. Doesn't seem worth it to change a multiple os superphone into a subpar android-only phone. But that's just me.

I guess the simple question would be why? What do you gain from that setup compared to what we have today? You'd still get 2 OSes, but with a -lot- more work I presume.
right?

I completely understand. I was just curious..Im sure there wouldent be any benefit of nand booting except another option and being able to shut up people from asking about it lol...I personally don't mind android running off the SD card...I have two and I use one as my everyday android build and I use the other for when new builds come out so I can try it out. Pretty sweet if yu ask me I'm sure some type of nand build will b out soon...everyone just needs to be patient

Meh, I'd rather have our awesome devs working on meaningful things like the touch screen lag...

Why is there so much craving for a NAND version?
What's wrong with having Android running from the SDcard?
As long as that still doesn't function 100% (screen/g sensor/footprints in sense etc..), why would you want to have a Nand version? I doubt that that will actually change anything.

footprint works on sense
i prefere sd card over nand ,easy switch between roms ,ihave 4 different roms on my sd card

[Q] What EXACTLY will be the advantages of NAND on HD2?!

Hey folks!
...I beg your pardon for possibly asking *goddamn* noobish questions here...but till now I really can´t get the point...
What will be the advantages of having NAND on our loved HD2? I´m really happy about the simplicism of impinging on the system so easily (e.g. changing the Kernel etc.). As soon as I intend to change something, I´m just copying the content of my SD-Card to the Desktop of my PC (backup)...after that I can mess around with android as long as I have fun with it...when something goes wrong, there´s always the possibility to make a rollback copying the backup on the SD again.
Will NAND reduce the battery drain to a minimum (i´ve read somewhere that this is false hope)? Will NAND make Android running faster than it already does? Will NAND quit with short screen freezes? Or what is the point here?
I´m sure the Devs do have a really good reason applying so much effort on the realization of NAND. I would be very grateful to understand how this reason looks like!
This question has been asked and debated a million times.
Short answer is that nobody knows, as nothing has been released. Ask a million of us this question and you will get a million answers. We just have to wait and see.

Thank you for your answer!! Well, of course I´m deeply sorry then for posting this question! However I couldn´t find any answer on this when using Mr. search?! Perhaps this has been dicussed only within other topics? Hm,...
I think the only noticeable difference will be in boot up time... since you wont have to boot into winnow first, it will be much quicker to boot into android. Other than that it may improve battery life a little, but I doubt it will improve that much. You're still running android on ram whether it's stored on nand or sd card. It may make other small improvements, and may introduce a whole bunch of new problems. We'll have to wait and see. Personally, I like having the option to run winmo and android in the same phone, and don't think the small improvements nand will make will be worth losing winmo. Also, I think once magldr is released, there may be some of the same improovements when running it from SD card, as magldr will take out the need to boot into winmo first to get to android, but still allow you to keep winmo and run android from SD.
I am definitely looking forward to magldr, but don't care about running android from nand. As far as improvements made, we'll have to wait and see to know for sure.

Lets not forget that once magldr is released we are a step closer to WP7 on HD2!
Also, installing applications on the HD2 takes forever and freezes up the phone because its writing to the SD card, where the ROM is too....
