I was wondering once Android on the hd2 is stable, will it be possible to flash a ROM like we do with wm or will be stuck using haret or the dualboot thing? Or is it too soon to even forecast?
As I understand atm its just running ontop of windows you dont flash android yet, but i guess they will try and get it to work as a rom eventually after they have all the driver issues sorted out and the little niggles there is but don't hold you're breathe for now mate, I wouldn't even like to say if its possible to have it as a main rom,
I believe the devs plan to have android boot from nand. Whether or not they will be successful remains to be seen. I have faith that we will have a good solution in time.
Ok cool to know! I've been running sense all day and im hooked!

It is not running on top of winmo... haret.exe shuts down the windows kernel and launches the linux kernel. Right now, they need winmo to boot first because winmo initializes a lot of the hardware. Eventually, once they have drivers that can initialize everything on its own, they can boot android from nand, but that will probably take a while. Only 1 or 2 winmo devices out of over a dozen that have android ports have android roms that can be flashed, and thats after years of development.
Personally, I prefer to keep winmo and have the ability to boot android or other linux builds when i want to. I prefer winmo, but also love android and love the fact that i can run both on my phone. Also, booting from nand doesn't really improve performance on any of the other android ports. If I wanted android full-time, I'd get an android phone... and I know some people are going to say there is no android phone with the screen or specs available for their carrier... but I can almost guarantee that by the time we have a flashable rom, there will be plenty of android phones with equal or better specs and screen for your carrier or country. I just don't see the reason to flash and get rid of winmo when you could have the best of both worlds. I guess maybe I'm just a winmo fan, but I don't know why you would have an HD2 if you weren't. Why make your phone just another android phone when you could have a dual-booting power-phone that can run both android and winmo apps. There's no playstation emulator for android!

Hi guys , has anyone tried to create Android rom for HD2
using Supersonic's ( Evo 4G ) Rom ?
I mean :
- take some parts of Ssonic rom to compare this with existing "pre"Android Rom
for HD2
Some parts should be similar so..... anyone tried ???
Don't tell me about differences hd2->SSonic because i know this.
Answer please.
It would be great if we could have something like grub, with both WinMo and Android installed, and enabling us to select which to boot right after turning the phone on! But I don't see this coming
yeah its too early to know. Imagine having an Android ROM on it that isn't fully compatible and then you get an error that won't let you hard reset or boot to the flash screen. Youd brick your phone! I think it will happen but not for maybe another year and by then I'm sure more high spec phones will be out.
How about somebody figures out how to run a barebones WM and Android on internal memory? Then it would have SD hotswap. I don't know if that is even possible though (probably not).
I've thought about this. with internal memory, I believe it is more stable and speedy than SDcard.

I too prefer the ability boot both WM and Android rather than booting Android exclusively. After using the desire rom for the past couple of days, call me crazy, but it really feels like sense on Windows Mobile with cookies home tab is more streamlined and accessible. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Android over Windows Mobile at the end of the day, but the aging WM OS still has a lot of perks.
What I'd rather see is a solution that allows you to truly dual boot WM and Android, and making jumping in and out of one for the other relatively quick and easy.

I don't see how this is all that different than any of the several apps the devs here have created to let you choose after booting whether you want to boot Android (even the build of your choice) or WinMo... I'm running it now and that app works rather flawlessly.
i just cant wait to ahve a nand android on hd2,,, its soo awesome,,,
i have installed the latest 1.7 of froyo..on hd2 qnd it rocks,...only if it were possible to ake it permaert.

I was wondering if it would be possible to flash an android rom onto the HD2. Or if space could posibly allow to have both WM6.5 and Android on the device and you can boot one or the other by means of choocing one during boot phase of the device.

the beta Android for Touch HD is getting slightly matured now, but still pretty unusable, other than that, it is very hard to tell if the Android can be cooked and become fully working with any WM phones now. But if someone can get Android working, this is gonna be really exciting!
the furtherest along is the polaris/vogue/kaiser port and that is still not at a working rom yet, getting close now but no rom yet, still using harret to boot it.
For me, getting Android working correctly is a much higher priority than being able to boot straight into Android - effectively, all the need to boot WM and use haret does is increase the boot time.
Anyway, I do hope that Android is ported to the HD2, but WM7 is a higher priority because I can already run Android on my Touch Diamond...
Thanks for the replies. I didn't know there already was a port and you could boot Android inside WM. Since I own a Polaris I tried that the last few hours and Android works like a charm. It's a pretty neet OS.
I think if HD2 becomes popular, there might be a port for HD2, too. So there is actually no real need for my idea of a dual boot launcher, since booting it from inside WM is functional, too.
I really wouldn't want to miss out on Windows Mobile, even when Android is pretty nice.
The HTC Dragon may be the phone to consider if you want Android on a HD2-like device. Looks pretty similar to the HD2 in terms of specs; 1GHz Snapdragon, capacitive touchscreen, all the rest, but a slightly rounded and more chin-like format. Looks to me like a cross between the HTC Hero and the HD2.

For the chef experts out there... If you had to put a percentage on the chance that someone will cook up an Adroid 2.0 ROM that will work seemlessly for the HD2, what would it be?
Also, might this news have any effect on it? http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/30/android-2-0-ported-to-original-t-mobile-g1-video/

This thread has been dead for over 5 months! I've seen you in other android for HD2 threads... you already know that there is a linux/android port being worked on. The linux project thread is in the roms section. What is it you wanna know that's not already known?
Hey all,
I have been waiting for news on this and it has been May since there has been any word on the Android OS being able to run on HD2s. Supposedly they have gotten over most of the major conflicts with this anticipated pairing. Check out some of the information from this article below:
Title:
HTC HD2 Android Port Makes Strides, Nears Release [Community Overcomes Problems Plauging HTC HD2 Android Port, Hopes to Have Public Release Available Soon[
Info:
With Windows Mobile dying a slow and painful death, Windows Phone 7 right around the corner and Android gaining a considerable portion of the smartphone marketshare along with buzz, the HTC HD2 remains a device lingering in limbo, begging for some attention. Regarded as one of the best Windows Mobile 6.5 powered handsets with a 4.3-inch capacitive display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 576MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, microSDHC slot and WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/3G the HTC HD2 lacks no where in terms of hardware, but arguably everywhere in terms of software.
...
Apparantly, the port was plagued with problems regarding the HD2′s processor along with the Linux boot tool dubbed HaRET that would be used to actually make the Android port. Luckily, those problems have been overcome giving the HTC HD2 Android port the much needed kick to near public availability. Be sure to check back soon as we track the port’s progress.
If/when this port is made available, will all of you HD2 owners out there make the jump from Windows Mobile to Android? If not, why?

I also have heard that someone actually has a working Windows Mobile 7 on a HD2, its in the development stage, can someone post on that if they know more. I am hoping for a dual boot so I can use both and have the best of both worlds.

Keep in mind we are still a long way from a fully functional port that you would actually want to replace winmo with. I wouldn't expect a fully working port that can actually use most of the hardware (bluetooth, wifi, gps, camera, etc.) and that works like an actual android phone for at least a year... and I would consider that fast development. Look at all the other ports for other winmo phones... none of them are fully functional yet... they all have missing parts and bugs. Great progress has been made in the last week for the hd2, but theres still a long way to go.
guess if you could do a dual boot with windows and android..would that make it the first hybrid OS? maybe call it WinDroid..or has that already been coined?

There are several other WinMo phones that can boot into android... this isn't the first winmo device there working on this for. That's how we pretty much know what to expect with the port and how it will take a long time to get it fully functional... They'e been porting android to winmo devices for years... even before there was an android device released.... but not one port is fully functional yet like a dedicated android phone. These android ports are fun to play with and if theres specific apps you want to use its nice to be able to boot into android... but they usually aren't good enough to replace winmo as your daily phone os for a long time. So don't expect your HD2 to become as functional as an EVO or any other android phone anytime soon.

Like I said earlier... the android port is not going to be as good as an android phone. Your not going to want to use it full time and replace windows with it for at least a year. You shouldn't have gotten a HD2 if you don't like winmo, because thats the only os that will run well on the phone for a long time. The android port will be nice to play with, but its going to be very buggy and not very functional for a long time. Look at the android ports for the other winmo phones... and they've been under development for years.
I don't know about that...I've used the port on both the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 and both are REALLY good. Really...the ONLY thing that stops me from using the TP2 port in everyday use is the "no external speaker". It's usually not a big deal durring work hrs since it's on vibrate all day anyway...but when im home and stuff gets loud...vibrate doesn't work for me. The only other things that don't work I believe are camera, bt, and gps(which KIND of works). None of those 3 would stop me from using a phone every day. The Android port for the TP2 is blazing fast compared to other devices with the same processor(i.e. g1/mytouch) and offers you that beautiful wvga resolution(480x800). if and when the HD2 gets to that point...i'd use WM durring the day for work, and Android by night lol
Is triple booting possible?
I thuroughly enjoy the freedom that the HD2 allows us. If you know how to us WM propperly, there isn't anything that this hardware can't handle. Adding the ability to boot into Android, or WP7 for that matter,is simply an added bonus. Will I install it on my phone? Of course. There isn't much that I haven't installed on my phone. But did I buy this in hopes of a port to another OS? No. I would have bought a phone that came with said OS if I needed that.
Thank you to all the developers who have worked tirelessly to make our phones so much fun. Keep doing what you do for those of us who can't.
^i agree wholeheartedly. I bought this phone after having a G1 and before that having a Wing, MDA and SDA. I am used to WinMo and Android and though I love Android, I can't say I'm dissatisfied with WinMo at all. I love the freedom to flash roms and all the different sorts of customization options I've got. If Android is what you want, I'd say don't get the HD2 from the start.
Speaking of Win 7 I hope the developers are working on it for the HD2. Rumor was that it will not be able to run on it.

Why even bother if it is soo buggy and not fully functional? Just for fun? I don't get it if it is sooo far away from a fully functional port why is everyone so excited. Sorry but your statement makes me feel like this android port is a big waste of time. Im sure next time I get a new phone I will try out an ANDROID phone.
The reason we are excited is because it brings new life to our phones, it allows us the freedom of choice. I love Windows and I love Android and the prospect of getting WP7 makes me excited because I don't have to shell out money for a new phone when I have a phone that I love right here, to do whatever I want and make my phone what I want it to be. It isn't a waste of time, it is a huge step to the development for a Android port to an original Windows phone. Saying it's a huge waste of time is like saying cooked roms is a huge waste of time, it adds another spectrum to our devices allowing us to customize, mod, hack, and personalize as we please.
I just booted Android on my HD2 and I can not wait till it's stable and I can play around with it even more. I got to the Set Up Device screen and played with the menu ! I'll post a video soon!

I think we'll get an android section long before theres a flashable rom... it could be years before theres a rom. I think only one other winmo device has an android rom that can be flashed. Personally, I don't see the point in flashing android... I think the great part about these android ports is the fact that you can run WinMo and android on the same device. I don't think flashing even improves performance all that much. If I wanted an android device, I would just buy one. I like running multiple os's on the same device.
The current android port isn't really just an app running on winmo... yes, you run haret, but that shuts down the windows kernel and starts up the linux kernel. Having android flashed on nand will not improve speed or performance very much except the fact that info can be moved to ram from nand a little quicker than it takes for info to be moved from memory card to ram, but that will not make a very noticeable difference. They will also have to get all the components to initialize without winmo before they can make a flashable rom.... that will take time. Like I said, even after years of developers porting android to winmo devices, only 1 or 2 devices have flashable roms out of more than a dozen devices... and none of them really get a performance boost from running it from nand, so I don't see the point.
We will need an android development section before we have a android rom. We're at the point where we should probably get a new section soon, especially once we start getting more devs making android or other linux builds.
I've read about HD2 performance since it was released, but now it seems that it is getting even better, with full android support and soon WM7, but is it true?
I want to change my X1 and was nearly going to get a Desire because i seem to like android, but i found that HD2 might support WM7 in the near future, and i want to have it too.
but is having HD2 and running on it other OS (Like android) a good choice for everyday use or just for hackers who like to push the device to its limits?
I'd say its more for people who like to mod there phones. It takes a lot of work and research to get android running well.... and it will probably never run as well as you can get a native android phone running. If you just want to run android and want a phone that will easily work, get an android phone. If you want to use winmo and android, and have the time, patience, and willingness to hack and play around with your phone until it works the way you want, then the hd2 is perfect.

i don't know, i personally like my HD2 with android and ubuntu. aside from having to load a winmo rom so voice and sound would work correctly, the whole process following the FAQ was less than 1hr. i'm not saying there aren't risks, but i do like the reward.
I do little modding on devices I use (computers, routers, mobile phones), and with my X1 i did many experiments and used many ROMs just to get the functionality i want, and still i am not very satisfied with it.
Currently i am trying the X1 version of android, which is quite fast and stable, but there is no support for the camera, wifi is not always working, and it is a huge battery eater (not more than 2-3 hours). but i liked the interface, can be changed easily, many apps in the app store, that's why i wanted an android.
If i see that HD2 can use a Desire HD rom in a native mode, then HD2 is it
What do you mean by using a desire HD rom in a native mode? The hd2 will never be a native android device and you can't flash android phone roms directly to the hd2. It has very good android port... probably one of the best... but it will always be a port. If you don't want to put the time in to do research and mod it the way you want, then the hd2 may not be for you. Expect to come across problems that will take time to research and find workarounds for. There will be a lot of trial and error to get it to run even close to as well as a native android phone will work out of the box.

I personally like my HD2 very much ! It's a really high-end device which can be modded as you wish... and I think that the HD2 is even the most customizable phone ever created on market... So I really.. recommend you the HD2, if you will dislike Windows Mobile, this is not a problem at all.. I also dislike it xD... because I've realised that Android is the future... but .. after some Android use & gaming, I was really feeled like.. I wanted to return back to WM.. so I can easily do it.. or even change to another OS like Ubuntu and try it whenever I want.. but if you buy an Android Phone.. you will not have such a customizable OS feature at all .. you will stay locked only on Android... so .. that's why I really like the HD2... and btw.. very soon will appear a NAND Version of Android .. or smth. like this which will allow you to wipe your Windows Mobile from your HD2... and you'll stay only on Android if you like so... and if you'll want to return back to the WM.. just simple .. you will install an Official HD2 ROM.. and you'll have the WM back.. ... so .. it's up to you to decide which phone you take.. but I highly recommend you the HD2 !

Be careful what you do with your hd2, if you really know what your doing you would always leave a windows mobile build as the resident rom, if windows wasn't to boot first, android would run but would be a service and driver nightmare and would need a bigger rom space on the hd2 to add many recovery sectors to not brick the hd2, the hd2 wasn't intended for resident android use, windows is still the master os at booting into things n shuttin down quick (bluescreen. lol) anyhow, android works great and fast enuff on my hd2 winmo 6.5.x custom rom (spl3) running android 2.2.1 dl desireZ v3.4finalz (webkit 3.1). I come from the dos and basic unix/bsd times, aah the times when DOS Shell with a booted mouse driver using a floppy was great to browse file systems quick n boot many things, cut copy paste ect, and bad because would forget vital entries then back to installing 9 o so floppies again, windows 3.1 saved us all for a long time as regards to media sound and streaming techniques. i went off topic, don't get a hd2 if you don't love windows mobile 2003se and above, if you really educate yourself with more knowledge of mobile devices and framework you would understand that windows mobile is very stable and responsive if you dnt load crap onto your phones memory and create trouble folders especially whilst using a corrupt windows pc os when transferring over to phone storage or mem card, not to mention not formatting the mem card the proper way!! good luck, the hd2 is still holding a little price, i say get it if you like winmobile, you may never be able to do a good custom flash on your hd2 and could brick it if your laptop cuts out half way through, i say use a pc when flashing hard-spl3, custom rom and radio to you hd2. research very good before doing anything with it ok. bless

Um not trying to be a butt hole here but have you not checked out the NAND Andriod ROMs? They seem to be running pretty good. I have talked to plenty of people that use a NAND Andriod ROM as their day to day OS on their HD2.

This is very good advice. Windows Mobile is not your average users OS. All of what you said above is great advice.
nand on hd2 is way better than on a mid level Android device.
This thread is from 4 months ago... no reason to revive it.
Hey everyone
Im just bought a used hd2 and just doing some investigating on xda on what you can do on it. And i must say, you can do A LOT on it. I was thinking of using a sd android rom as it is the easiest way. But now it leaves me with a decision with what OS to boot on NAND. Windows Mobile is old but its still good, WP7 is new and i dunno, kind of stuck in between the two. Can anyone help with my dilemma? Thanks
Why not just try WP7? It isn't going to take more than 5 mins to have everything ready. Beware it will format your sd card, so put in another one.
wp7 is a great os... go for it
best thing would be to try out wp7 and experience it. it's definitely worth installing and trying out. like wm6.5 or android, wp7 has it's own ups and downs. really depends on your preferences but again once you've tried it only you can decide which os is best suited for you. cheers
As to me, i still love WM 6.5.5 and i am going to stick with it for a very long time! Sense UI is so ****in great! loooooooove it! Android is not my stile and WM 7 is weird... my opinion though maybe later on i'll try both of them!

Just like others, I would strongly encourage you to test all the roms available here
I once, used SD Android, then WP7, then NANDROID, then going back again to Dual Boot WM 6.5.x and SD Android. This is the best combination for what I need it from my HD2. But, it will be very subjective.
So, go flashing it and share your experiences with us
Cheers
If you are mainly going to run Android, then why not run it Android NAND?
If you prefer the dual boot but still mainly use the Android on the SD, then does it really matter, as you switch on your HD2 then when WP or WM boot up you use the system to close and load Android.
Personally I still like WM, as it is open and completely customisable. I regularly switch between WM and Android (SD). Android for the apps and WM for the apps not on Android. If all the apps were available on all operating systems (WM/WP/Android) I would not move away from WM.
