SGH-I897 Source Code is Available - Captivate Android Development

Samsung has released the Source code for the Captivate.
To download directly from their site follow the below link. Look for Model number SGH-I897.
http://opensource.samsung.com/
* This link contains the drivers that weren't included in the original release.
* The D/L speeds are all over the place so it might take a while to download.
* There appears to be some garbage at the end of the gz file but I was still able to mount the gz file and extract the tar files.
---------------------------------------------------
If you plan to build the kernel you will need Sourcery G++
The Lite version is free.
http://www.codesourcery.com/sgpp/lite/arm/portal/release1033
----------------------
I've verified that the kernel can be compiled using the Source Code and CodeSourcery G++ lite.
*NOTE: If you compile straight from the provided source, there are know issues with garbled mic and wake-up lag.
- The mic issue has been reportedly resolved by using the source code from "sound/soc/codecs" folder of the Vibrant source tree.
- No Update on the wake lag issue.
-------
08-23-2010
The wakeup-lag has been reportedly fixed if you compile the kernel with a different toolchain.
Here is the thread discussing the alt toolchain.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761923
Here is the thread to Unhelpful's kernel, it has instructions on how to build using the alt toolchain.

I woke up to a similar email as well! Now I'm really annoyed that I have to do silly unimportant things like work and go to wedding this weekend.

Wow, the samsung open source site is really slow, I'm only getting around 20 kb/s.
When the DL gets done, in 3 hours, I'll post the file to a couple of mirrors.

I did a speed test to S. Korea and it pegged at 3Mb/s, when I tried a tracert to the opensource server, it started timing out around the 8th hop.
maybe I should tether to my i897 and download it through 3G!

Uploading to multi-upload right now.
Edit:

Just updated the OP, thanks for the links.

Its probably slow because everybody with a Captivate is trying to download the file at the same time.

This is good news. I wonder how much and what code they withheld because its proprietary. What was the concensus on that in the international source code release?

As someone who is waiting for the Sprint Epic (or possibly getting an EVO), I'll be watching closely now to see if this has the encrypted drivers that are useless for ROM development.
I'd really like to see all GPS and stalling issues resolved before I consider the EPIC.

Getting about 700kbps. Uploading it to my server now. 6 minutes and I will post a mirror.
Well here you go, on my private server. Tell me what kinda speeds you get. I was always curious.

Thanks for the mirrors... from samsung's site my download would have taken an hour... I got it from your mirrors in 10 mins..
Thanks!!

Hey guys, I wanted to get a bounty started for this, I was about to buy the special usb drive for this, but why do that when we can just compile the source to work on our phones!
I don't have access to my ps3 right now, as it is loan out, but you might want to try to use the palm pre version and see if it works without recompiling.

well good thing the last time I updated was to 3.41 and I haven't played online since LBP... homebrew would be so nice on this powerhouse (especially since they took away our OtherOS)
I am definitely in for supporting the homebrew community. The amount is contingent on how long it takes to get done. The sooner, the more I pay

If using a DNS proxy will bypass the patch for this then that's an oversight on Sony's part. I can understand why the DNS proxy bypass the version check when you connect to PSN but not this.
I thought that 3.42 would prevent the specific code from running - as it needs to run during/pre OS loading.
DG did you confirm this yourself or have a link from a credible site that did?

[KERNEL][JVB]TalonDev Hourlies

This is just eXistZ's Talon kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050206
I was on the TalonDEV IRC channel and we had an interesting idea, that since the development is going so fast over the next few days, it'd be nice to have hourlies. Thus, I set a server up for the i9000 hourlies and the captivate hourlies. These are UNTESTED and UNSTABLE! It may very well break your phone, but these will be the most cutting edge Talon kernels you can get. You are welcome to ask for help in this thread or on the Talon IRC channel (irc.freenode.net #suckerpunch), but KEEP IT OUT OF THE CURRENT TALONDEV THREAD!
You may find the Captivate kernels (date and time stamped) here
If you want to look at the i9000 kernels or the build script, you may find those here: http://talondev.sailerboy.net/
Thanks to ytt3r, eXistZ, and anyone listed in eXistZ's thread.
I get no credit for this, I'm just hosting them and compiling them. Go over to eXistZ if you want to donate anything.
These are built every hour. Cappy is on the half hour, i9000 is on the hour.
Changelogs can be found at the newest commits here: https://github.com/existz/linux_gt-i9000-gb/commits/gingerbread-dev
These are all CWM flashable. Make sure you pick the right phone.
NOTE: If you notice that it takes more then 5-10 min to build (captivate starts at the 30, i9000 at the 00), you should probably use a previous build or wait for the next build. The build environments aren't seperate and the builds may conflict, potentially bricking your phone. I plan to fix this later.
Are they odin or cwm3 flashable files?

Well Baz, the X10 has been misplaced for a while in the CM development corridors. It seems they are getting ready for its inclusion on a regular basis. Once es209ra is added to ROM manager, nightlies will be available for OTA download through it. That should allow for more data to analyze and quicker bug resolution, leading to a stable release more quickly. And of course giving flash junkies their fix. I was so antsy waiting for a few expected releases that I flashed FXP113-CM9 and SpaarcDroid Alpha 4.0.3 last night. In my opinion getting the X10 in ROM manager is the most important next step.

Well i can see the benefit as Tal333 explained, thanks dude, if we have users giving real-time bug info OTA then they can be "ironed out" quicker, honestly (i know it sounds bad) but i have still not got my head around ADB, so i only use flashtool/recovery - so getting the "bug reports" manually has always intimidated me somewhat!!
Tal, if you don't mind i will PM you once these come out to check i have the process right for using the roms in a way that will be useful to the developers, but if i am right, i will be able to see the roms on "rom manager" (which i don't use yet but will learn!), d/l them straight thru the app, install via cwm, leave the cyanogen error reporting enabled (anonymous usage stats i believe?!) and the rest will happen in the background via data/wifi?
Anyways, i will read up on these things to learn more - thanks again for the info

I agree with this user since that is the only what which will speed up the development and help the developers bring out a stable release within a minimum period.
ok may i explain
a nightly or a daily build is an automated build.
organisations like canonical, mozilla, cyanogemmod, etc etc
have powerful servers running that can build rom/software/os live cd/whatever in few minutes
these builds are queued up by maintainers and the latest available sources automatically get compiled and released as a build.
the thing is between today and tomorrow if there is no change in the source code, then the two nightlies will come out exactly the same.
to understand better you ppl can visit jenkins.cyanogenmod.com
jenkins is their build server and you can see how each minute new builds are getting automatically generated

Will this phone ever see this? I really want to try it out.
I see it's available for the razr, could you flash it on the razr m and it still work?

NEVER flash a rom made for a different device. The razr and razr m are two different phones. Idk if ubuntu touch is gonna be available for this phone i havent headr anything about it. Maybe you should learn to port it. Ubuntu has made their own guide to doing it.

i wasn't gonna I was just curious. I just may and try porting... I have to find the time for it
It didn't really work for the RAZR anyhow it took a 2 GB ROM slot and wouldn't boot... the 12.1 version of Ubuntu would boot but was just a preview... nothing was functional it had preloaded contacts call logs texts....I would love to see a working version tho....

No real point in porting it until they release one that actually functions.

I use DB and Devhost for all of my stuff.
Had to move to a reliable internet source in order for it to complete (Taco bell)
I haven't had any problems with goo. o_o
I just don't like goo ... every time the ole lady goes through my history she is convinced its some kind of porn site with a secret entrance to its goodies...
