Restart loop of death - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Have noticed this a few times and wondering if there is an easy fix.
Few roms now I have finally had to restart (After 3 days running) and I get this loop of death around the battery status.
Failed to find rootfs on SD card. You need to unzip a rootfs
/bin/sh can’t access tty
266.56 : HTCleo battery 0-0026 : I2CV_Read_Status
266.56 : HTCleo battery 0-0026 : I2C_Read_Data
266.57 : HTCleo battery 0-0026 : ACR=4211 FL=1256 RAAC=95
266.57 : HTCleo battery 0-0026 : Batt: 95%, 4053 mV, -121mA (-121avg, 28.3c, 1152ma
316 : HTCleo battery 0-0026 : I2c_Read_status
I have just re-dumped the whole image back onto the SD card less the data.img file and restarting.
Is this a known problem?
Any easy way to fix?
Update - Looks like the issue is in the data.img. Might be corrupt. ISs there a chkdsk for img files?
Really don't want to loose my configuration.

ive had the loop only when my data hasn't filled itself in as in when I've deleted the data file & there hasn't been enough storage to make up a full data file, check you've got enough storage on card

Still got 5gig left on the card.
Can anyone recommend a utlil to scan the repair the img file?

HERE IS YOUR QUICK FIX!
I had this problem tons of times and had to wipe and reinstall android and lose all my files
Really all you have to do is sync your phone to a pc on WM boot and erase the android folder on the root of your SD card. Don't worry you will not lose any documents, Linux will remake the folder uncorrupted when booting into android the next time!
Hope this helps!

This is not my solution, but it works:
Boot into WinMo, go to your SD card and delete the "android" folder.
Once you've done that you can run clrcad and haret and you won't "loop". Even better any customization will still be there.

Glad to hear that!

plz this is it no way
Boy i will be trying this one. can it be that easy Man!!!????

Thanks for the workaround! That seems to work.
Now as to the cause. Could it be that we are not waiting for the OS to shutdown all the way when we power down?

delete android folder ... will not let me delete it
ok i did this once and yes it work ... got me out of loop of death but now i cant delete the damn folder now.. is there some reason or is there another way to delete this damn folder ... will have to format the damn card and i got like 11gigs of moives on the damn thing Plz someone tell me how to delete a folder that i am sure is protected some kind of way but i dont know what to do to fix this. Anyway i am copying the folder for now but damn i know how it got lock up because of the gps i turn on and then trapster and the cache folder and another one is there in the android folder... so i must have quit and reboot the phone and got the loop of death. tried to delete it and it will not let me delete it.. so there u have it those damn gps apps are whats causing it for me anyway. thanks all..

hate to bring a dead bird back to life but can anyone help me get out of the restart loop? ive deleted the android folder once and now there is no more android folder to delete to solve the problem. ive got rafdroid nand using magdlr. phone boots without the sd card in though. but ive got no more original settings, its like a fresh copy of android
[EDIT]: nevermind, looks like doing a reboot with "recovery" within android (boot into the OS without sd card first, then insert later) solved the problem. hope that helps someone else out there with this problem. should have done that the first time, now i have no android folder

Package File Invalid

My phone wont download apps from the marketplace or my sdcard anymore. It keeps saying the "package file invalid" and with apps from my sdcard it just says not installed. What gives? After a soft reset I was able to download one thing but after than nothing would install

Helpful information:
What ROM you're using?
What was the last thing you did before this began happening?
Did you make Nandroid back up, if so -- have you restored?
Have you tried reinstalling the market application?
Have you tried changing to a different ROM and seeing if the problem occurs?
We're here to help, just gotta give us a little more info.
okay
Im using the Fresh Rom,
the last thing I did was install an app of my SdCard.
I didnt do a restore, only because I haven't done a backup in about a week, and I didnt want to lose all the stuff I've done since then.
I dont really know how to reinstall the market app, but does that also control installs from the sdcard?
and ive been using this rom for about 3 weeks with no problems so I dont know if that was the problem

Hmm...interesting.
The first thing you should do is make a back up. Save all the stuff you have. Then, while still in recovery, I would restore your OLD back up and see if anything changes.
I've created an update.zip file that will automatically delete your Market application (Vending.apk) and then reinstall it. This might or might not fix your problem. Download the file below and copy it to your SD Card, then flash it through recovery.
Tell me what happens.
EDIT:: File was removed due to bad update-script, please see post below.
thanks for the post. I would flash this but when I tried it said that the directory didnt exist. I think it has to do with the permissions or something and I haven't the slightest clue how to do it... grrrr!!!

Directory didn't existed? I've never heard of that error. You have rooted your phone phone and installed a recovery image, correct?
yes my phone is definitely rooted. Irony is I did a restore from a previous backup, but now its doing the same thing!!
But this is what I get when I try to flash it,
E:cant chown/mod /system/bin
(No such file or directory)
E:Failure at line 10
set_perm_recursive 0 2000 0755 0 755 SYSTEM:bin

Well, I'll be honest, I know exactly why you're getting that error... the update script I included in the update.zip file was incorrect. However, I've fixed the problem and uploaded a second version of the update.zip. Please download this file, copy to your sd card and flash. You shouldn't have any problems this time.
Again, this will remove your Market application and then reinstall it. Hope it works, tell me if you have problems. Sorry again.
Thanks! It worked like a charm..Lets hope it stays that way!

Wow. Are you using Apps2SD? Also, maybe you should try running a Sprint RUU on your phone, bringing it back to the original factory settings and see if you have problems. If not, try installing a ROM again and see what happens. Otherwise, I'm not sure what's going on here.
Yea I am using App2SD. Im not sure what it is either. It works and then it doesnt sometimes. Its very strange. Reinstalling the Market did work for a little bit, but I don't know. I just keep clearing out the caches and stuff. Maybe that has something to do with it.
Thanks for all your help!

Apps2SD = All of your applications will be installed and stored on your SD Card instead of the internal memory on your phone, thus supposedly increasing performance and such. It's best to have a a decent sized card, but also one labeled "Class 6", as it has the fastest transfer rates, so again better performance. I don't think Apps2SD is your problem, but for the hell of it... if you want, you could try disabling it.
**Before trying this, you need to back up your sd card -- meaning, copying all the stuff from the card onto your Desktop or somewhere on the computer before proceeding to the next step.
To do so; go into recovery and choose:
1. Partition sdcard
2. Partition SD
3. Press Home to confirm
4. Set Swap-size to O MB (Use trackball)
5. Set Ext2-size to 0 MB (Use trackball)
6. Fat32-size = Leave that to Remainder
7. Press Home to confirm.
This will FORMAT (erase) everything on your SD card, but not the phone. After its done, you can reboot, mount your SD Card and copy what you saved to the desktop back onto the SD card, like nothing ever changed. However, what did change is that your applications will no longer be saved to the SD card, but rather the internal memory on the phone.
Also, I would reflash the update.zip that I uploaded the other day and see if this Market thing happens again. If it happens again, I'd say you're better off running the Sprint RUU (bringing your phone back to factory settings) and then starting over from scratch, but that's just me.
Okay I will try that!

Problem when rebooting back to android

Hi Bro,
Im running android on my HD 2
Energy rom (rom version 6 aug 2010)
Radio 2.10.50.28_2
Android rom (mattleo 1.7 / froyostone 2.2 both rom will give the same problem)
I keep getting problem when rebooting back android on my HD2 (2nd or third time). normally the first time i boot android its quite slow (its normal). the second time its faster. but when this problem came it take very long to boot back to android. Below is the message appear
"failed to find rootfs on SD card. You need to unzip rootfs zip file to the root of your SD card. (i didnt delete any rootfs file from ny sd card????)
/bin/sh:cant access tty; job control turned off"
this problem is random...normally the 3rd or fourth time i boot android or sometimes the 2nd time i boot. when the message above appear, it will take way to looooonnnng to boot back to android.
any thing that i miss bcos i follow all the direction on installing android on HD2. first time boot all working, 3g, wifi, no robo voice, marketplace, internet access all working superbly...
sorry my english not that good, im from the longhouse of borneo island..
Do you have the files stored in the root of your sd card or in "Android" folder? I would put everything in the "Android" folder; it just keeps things more organised. You may need to edit your startup.txt file to point to where your installation is.
dammit.....i put it on root...
sorry for my mistake n ignorance not reading the readme file...
thanks n will let you know if its solve the problem.

Hello, Exodix-i´ve had the same problem:Hardreset, clean boot and then calibrating the touchscreen. It allways took longer and longer and you can do nothing about it.... makes you feel verrrrrrrry lost!! The longest time i have been following the cross ´round the screen was 2 h !!!!! There is no way (as far as i know) to skip this part of the setup-so keep on and stay patient. B t w -i used my fingers at the end-You can setup the touchscreen later again to work more exactly.
Greetings-Frank. (If Brainmaster reeds this-are you from H in Ger??)

The solution should be very simple - just make a blank welcome.not file and copy it on your SD Card. The existence of the welcome.not file stops the Calibration and Welcome screen.
@ Frank - Yes. How did you knew?
@ Brainmaster: "Frohes Neues..."! ...what for a file?? how to get it and how to boot from SD???? I`m not so familiar to all of this...just an unknowing user...!!...probably this could have worked with my m800. It had the same problem and does now RIP-the service at Pearl couldn´t fix it......! (b.t.w.: your Weather told me!!! I`m from Burgdorf.)
all the best-Frank.
Open notepad on PC - save a empty file named "welcome.not" (just a empty file!) - extension of the file must be .not and not .txt - copy it to the SD-card - reboot your Phone ...

[Q] bad blocks

hey guys ik there are threads already on this but dont want to revive a dead thread, i have recently found that i have about 9 bad blocks on my device. i have ran task29 a few times and they are still there. i have also tried to flash the leodev file with no luck on the flash comes back saying not signed and bs... is there any way i can fix my baby?
How do you know, that you have bad blocks? Is there any programm to check this?
how to see
How to See if you have Bad Blocks: Okay since people are asking, here is a short step by step for both EU and TMous: 1) Format your Boot, Data, Cache, System, Dalvik Cache (Eu users your Dalvik Cache is on your sdcard on the SD-EXT) 2) Flash your rom. 3) After flashing DO NOT REBOOT. 4) Go to Advanced, then Error Report. 5) This will copy the Recover.log to your SDCard. 6) Go Back and enter Mount & Storage. 7) Mount USB SD. 8) On your computer navigate your SD Drive. 9) Look for a folder called: clockworkmod. 10) Inside you will find a file called: recovery.log 11) Copy this to your Desktop. 12) Open with Wordpad or Notepad++ If you see in that whole log, Could not erase blah blah bad block, or anything that says bad block, with the exception of a location called "system/xbin/badblocks" (This location is normal hats a file name), then you have bad blocks, and the more you have, the smaller your cwr partition actually is.
try task2a

2: "After task 29, I get this output in MTTY:

This has been asked 100+ times in the Diamond thread so this is the final time I will answer:
IT MEANS NOTHING..NADA..ZIP! I have not experienced ANY problem with this output...Please stop asking!

I have also nearly the same problem with my babe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944464&page=2
Mtty shows me 3 bad nand blocks and have big problems with booting wp7, have also startet a new thread.... have also not found a solution for my actuall problem.
With my old HD2 i had the problem that its often crashed down by freezing or random reboots,...sometimes about 10x per day.
do you want to know, what was the solution in that case?
Had installed stock rom (3.14) and let my HD2 to fully drain the battey until the device has not response any more.
Then had fully charged the battery (green light on mobile), restart the device, charged the battery again until the green light was shown again.
Had installed wp7 and the problem never occured any more... try maybe this

[Q] AmericanAndroid SD boot problem

Hi,
This is my first time with android - that's why I'm trying SD.
All went ok for about 3 days - I tried many apps from the market & all of a sudden my phone rebooted!
When it booted again I saw the lock screen & can see the tiny icons on the status bar then it just reboot again!
After several attempts I got it booting but most of the apps now force close - my contacts are gone so as my SMS.
Any idea what might caused something like that? is Android so vulnerable that
installing some application can cause a total loss of the system?
- Do I need to re-install every thing again?
- will deleting data.img is enough to force a clean install?
- Is there a way to restore my old data from data.img?
- Is there a recommended book to upgrade from a noob to an educated user?
Thanks,
it's strange because when Americn android craches, it should bootloop.
here's a couple of suggestions:
backup the valuable contents of your SD card then search for file system errors, if your card has a corrupt file here and there it might be the one causing the problem, for the how to, it's in my troubleshooter, check my sig.
Usually a fresh data.img file is considered a clean install unless you've messed with root explorer (or any similar app) and did something wrong to your sytem files.
I'm not sure how to get the data back, I know you can access the data.img contents using a special tool, see here for info http://www.howtoforge.com/access-linux-partitions-from-windows
there's also a tool on softpedia to do so.
but you can try to look for the SMS data somewhere on your data.img, extract them to your harddrive, then copy them back using android explorer. I haven't tried it, and theoretically it might work, but I can not guarantee it.
My advice is that don't put too much pressure on the device, it's running Android from the SD which is not designed to work as NAND. let the device take a breath for a few seconds after each installation, it may say it finished, but it's still doing something in the background, I learned that the hard way. and always backup our data before you do something new.
and yes, if you use a fresh data.img you will have to install everything again.
