UMA WiFi Software From Kineto - Android Software Development

I was just wondering if anyone had come across the Smart Wi-Fi app from Kineto that T-Mobile is purportedly testing now. Is there a more concrete timetable for release known. Also, I have heard conflicting information about the software requirements. I have read somewhere that it would run on any Android device with v. 1.5 or greater, but I have also heard that it requires special APIs that it needs to hook into so does that mean that the carrier would have to issue new builds of Android for each device with the APIs built in or did Google bake the APIs into Eclair or Froyo?

Anyone? I'm only gonna bump this once and if no one answers I'll take that as a confirmation that no one knows.

Ill throw down a bump on this.

Looks like they have officially put out the info. Now it is just waiting on T-mobile to push it out to users.
Funny thing is they say it is for Froyo, but Eclair is being showed on Vibrant as a demo.
http://www.kineto.com/press_releases/Kineto_Smart_Wifi_Android2_Froyo.php

Im kinda curious what this means exactly.
The press release doesn't seem to imply that this will be for one network or country, nor did the article that I read here.
Hopefully this will turn into something that'll be for any droid device. As someone who lives in a blackspot I would LOVE this kinda service. Here's hoping it gets into a release candidate soon. Wish they had opened it up to everyone rather than keeping in closed development tho, but oh well.
This would be a seriously amazing service and really boost android's rockingness.
I'd love to see if you could hack this to get true phone capability to wifi only tablets somehow *ponders*

Google earth....?

Hi everyone,
This is my first post, though I have been lurking for a while now. Does anyone know if google earth is coming anytime soon to android? The code is out there to make it available, the guys who were developing Enkin had a working client before they were mysteriously silenced by corporate confidentiality agreements.
Aleks
N.B. Thanks to everyone who has posted before for all the info on how to gain root and also to JF for his top quality builds.
i'm going to just (guess) say that google WILL make an official google earth app.
if they made one for the competing phone - iphone - then there is no way they wouold just skip over android. i'd say we can probably expect an android google earth app by summer.
Lurking is good! You gain knowledge of how the forum works. UK lurkers are better!
Anyway, from what I saw, Google Earth will be in the cupcake build, however that could just be me. If anyone will release it, it will be google, and most likely in an upgrade. It might be a push with the G1s graphics accelleration, and wouldn't work amazingly with the slow 3G data connection, I think google will do it eventually, if not in cupcake, then their next major build (cheesecake?, Vanilla Crazy cake?)
And yes, I made a portal reference that wasn't (as) obvious!

Froyo around the corner:-)

http://www.amobil.no/artikler/android_2_2_til_galaxy_s_rett_rundt_hjornet/78810
This was an artical on a norwegian mobile site
This summer, it was said that Android 2.2 version of the Galaxy S probably would get an official version in September. September is known as the passed, but the update is now just around the corner.
- We have estimated the deployment in mid-October, and hopefully the update will reach users during the next week, "said Stig Ove Langø, major account manager in Samsung Norway.
Your phone is much faster
Android OS 2.2, also called Froyo, is a major update. Some of the highlights:
The browser has been quicker to load sites with Javascrip
Applications will load two to five times faster that everything does not have to be before you start, but it all happen on the way
Processor performance of the phone in general should be better
Memory handling must be very much faster.
Exchange support is greatly improved
The phone can function as Wi-Fi router
In addition, there are a lot of other things that have changed when it comes to user interface. The full list can look at the Android development page.
Great

Ah, that's good news. amobil.no are usually more dependable than any operator. So this might just be the right deal...
it depends where the corner is...
i think is near too.
Samsung just tweeted this:

We’re very sorry about the delay with the release of Froyo. We're working on it round the clock & will post an update as soon as we have one
They like to tweet something like that every other week to make us think it's nearby. All we can do is wait.
hey tweeted that on the 8th i believe, and probably re-tweeted it again
i hope to god its just round the corner, im not moaning believe me, i moaned a hell of alot more with my hero and the delays for 2.1
GPS best be fixed, as no matter what rom i have flashed, it takes an age to lock on, and when it does at best im about 100 metres away from where i actually am
The filesystem is shocking also
all in all though, i love the music player, samsung always get that bit right
that gps problems is a hardware problem some guy who sended his phone back got a new antenna(different material) in it and then it worked fine! its with the first batch of phones. i got a phone that came with jm2 instead of fp3 from when i got it right out of the box and my phone is good and acurate on gps quick fix and very accurate 5-10 meters
Its a software problem with the GPS. i get 5-10 meters accuracy too. But when i slow down everything went jumping around... locking is not a problem for me. Its only that it cant rly lock me to one place. So i guess its a software problem
yea its jumping a little i just noticed in a gps monitoring program but it keeps locked on (rarely they go all gray for a sec but then its back again)(gives no problems in actual navigation) here and while driving and navigating in car with sygic mobile maps it never looses track

FroYo better be good or I'm selling and getting WP7. Although I was against it from the start its shaping up to better than Android.
I love Android but its not polished as an OS yet. It really isn't. Samsung's AWFUL software department doesn't help either.

Good to know that they are working their ass off, because the beta Froyo's i've seen are not worth waiting for
Hope they take their time to make the update really worthwhile. No problem waiting for it.

So because Android still has a few quirks to sort out and needs some polish here and there, you're considering jumping to a spanking new, "fully rewritten" platform?
Among the features that are not yet present are cut, copy, and paste, full multitasking
[...]
Support for removable SD cards and tethering have also been left out of the OS. Microsoft claims this to be in the interest of data security for enterprise users. Windows Phone 7 will also not support Silverlight in the web browser or IPsec virtual private network (VPN) security, videocalling, a system-wide file manager, Bluetooth file transfers, and music player equalizers.

Windows Phone 7 might become the next-best thing since sliced bread, but they've still got a long way to go
Then you can blame is all on M$ again like people are used too hehe

Mainly because I miss my QWERTY keyboard! I was hoping the Epic would become global, but for some reason companies intend on keeping QWERTY for CDMA only .

Researcher To Release Web-Based Android Attack

I hope we get 2.2
http://it.slashdot.org/story/10/11/05/0229205/Researcher-To-Release-Web-Based-Android-Attack
"The attack targets the browser in older, Android 2.1-and-earlier versions of the phones."

What an ass. So he figures out something and now hes going to release it?
So is his intensions to piss people off or force Googles hands to fix it?

I think its the latter. That, or to light a fire under the OEMs & network operators to get 2.2 out to more devices. Just my $0.02...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The current OEM vendor/carrier model is one of the worst parts of Android. Google attempted to break this model via the Nexus One. Hopefully it does light a fire to improve the security model for these phones.
Google may be forced to rein in some of the rampant variances to secure the platform via enforcing a minimum level of compliance to security updates or else revoke a phone makers ability to use the Android trademark.
The problem has already been fixed with 2.2, so the onus is on the OEMs to get their act together.
Some things make me want to respect this guy, then again it affects me since we have yet to recieve 2.2. But yes I believe all android phones should be running current software.
I wonder if you need to be rooted in order to fall the vicitm, unless you can push superuser.apk via the exploit and run it.
Have to give him props for trying, and like seeing that he is using linux based OS to develop on

Youre right! Maybe he works for T-mobile and is secretely making all our phones go back to stock and unrootable. Which in turns means they will never release 2.2 hahaha. <- By the way do not take this as actual fact I know how the paranaoid are here on the forums lol

No, this a generic exploit within WebKit. The actual exploit itself doesn't have superuser access, it can only access what the web browser is able to access. It can't make phone calls or generate SMS messages, but it can access files like photos and whatever else is available to non-rooted apps.
I don't know why you guys think this guy is a douche. This is how it always worked. When people find security vulnerbilities, they tell the company, but the company usually doesn't move it up to the top of the list to fix. So they mention the type of security flaw there is, sends the information to the company, and sometimes even mention it at conferences. After publicly announcing it, they give the company time to fix it, otherwise it's the company's fault for not getting their ass in gear to fix the security issue.

I do no see how he is a douche.
Ignoring the issue does not make it disappear, and he clearly has done his work to make the issue public in hopes it gets addressed.
Releasing a code with a security hole that you have to use something to circumvent the security of the device to fix is douche (apple vs jailbreakme.com anyone)

I was paranoid by this too. My Vibrant will shackled from having sex with the web until it gets 2.2 Maybe that researcher wants them to release Froyo soon so use this to leverage against them to release ASAP?
I don't think he's a douche. I honestly want to believe that google would push carriers to be on the same OS. Just the fact that not all android phones can handle the 2.2 OS - And so people stuck with those phones and would be affected by this flaw is pretty crappy. But I really hope this makes carriers want their phones updated and running the latest and greatest. Only time will tell.

[Q] Tethering?

Any word on tethering for the DVP?
If it's looking like it's not going to be possible I want to order the Omnia before VAT goes up.
Thanks in advance,
cfp
Not a matter of if its possible (I am sure it is..) It's how to do it.. I havent gotten past finding a diagnostic screen and the deafining silence on my posts tells me no one else has either. YET..
So you'd be very surprised if tethering wasn't available in a few months?
Tethering was SUPPOSED to be a major feature of WP7.. but the carriers gave MS a huge pushback on that, as they had different plans on getting more money out of thier customers for tethering. So it was removed, on one phone (I believe the Samsung) they have found the "Work around".
I have seen on some videos and boards the things HTC wanted to do to the OS but was stopped from doing by MS in regards to customizations. So again there has to be ways to do some of this.
So I firmly believe its in the OS buried somewhere. At worst we have to registry hack to get to it.
The Devs here are amazing.. and its only a matter of time until they crack the OS and come up with ways to customize the tiles, tether, custom ringtones (that has already been done through Chevron), and the like.
The real question is are the Devs going to have to fight through the OS every step of the way or is MS or HTC (Or someone inside) going to "leak" some of the needed elements that will help attain those goals.
If they can crack iOS WP7 should be crackable too.
Would love to see something like htc's Windows 6.5 "Wi Fi Router" on Windows Phone 7 phones.

Where are you getting this information from? There has never been any mention of tethering being part of WP7, not in the test builds, tech preview and obviously not in the final release. And where is the "pushback" from carriers? In fact if you read here http://wmpoweruser.com/telstra-thinks-windows-phone-7-is-very-competitive-wants-tethering/ the carrier rep actually says they DO want tethering in WP7.
There is NO evidence that tethering was present at all and then removed for any reason, and the simple fact is that its just not there and we have no idea how it will be implemented when and if it actually is officially added to WP7.
In a number of sources.. http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/windows-phone-7-has-tethering-support-up-to-carriers-whether-to/ its in the OS but disabled.
Lastly there was even a notice early on that like WM6 it would be intragal to the OS, and that MS was going to make carrier not charge for it and it would be free. Fpr the life of me can not find those articles.. (I'm not a conspiracy theorist.. but... I KNOW I read them... )
As we all know the Samsung can do it if you do a few hacks and jump through a few hoops. So its obviously there.
I was even told TODAY by T-mobile customer rep its a $15 option.. didnt say how it would work though. REALLY thinking of paying for the $15 option and seing how they do it. Good thing the old WM6.5 can tether without any blockage.

I'm agreeing with you...I've never seen this in any spec or announcment. I do know that tethering is in the OS, but its a setting that is preset to off by the OEM. It's exposed by accident in the Samsung....and I'm sure others have it. I've always been under the belief that tethering will be exposed, once the appropriate data plans are available. I think of tethering like I think of luggage on an airlines....if you pay, you can bring all the bags you want....No pay, no bags....

Gingerbread 2.4 article on Engadget.com

for any one interested.
"We're still coming down from the euphoria of introduction, but Dutch site Tweakers.net claims that Google's not entirely passing the torch to Honeycomb just yet -- beforehand, there's apparently another Gingerbread build in the cards. Having played with some sort of cobbled-together Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc with a 2.4 build, the site says that we can expect an incremental build that seems to feature miscellaneous stuff Google might not have had time to include in 2.3 -- random things like a new animation when deleting icons off the home screen, to much bigger features like visible video calling hooks. Unfortunately, said hooks didn't seem to be tied to any video calling-enabled Google Talk client, but considering how early this build seems to be, there's reason to believe they'll add it in by launch time. It's an open question when this is coming -- or to what devices -- and when you think about Eclair's progression from 2.0 to 2.1, it could happen sooner than you expect. "
Wow, it's like Deja Vu of last year
Eclair 2.1 - December 09
Eclair 2.1 - January 10
I could see the same thing happening:
Gingerbread 2.3 - December 10
Gingerbread 2.4 - January 11
I wonder what are the improvements though. I would predict the new Android music player or Gtalk Video calling
I think that is fake or something. It just doesn't add up. Sony has always been ages behind everyone else when it comes to android.... And wouldn't we be seeing 2.4 on nexus s before sony could even sniff the code for it?

but i think sony is trying to fix that, with the upcoming devices.
the psp phone now runs 2.3 instead of the 2.1(on first leaked photos)
and we all know the chart with web visited 2.4 devices.(supposed to be honeycomb rumor.though honeycomb is officially 3.0)

Question, i know you can edit the build.prop to say what ever version number you would like but would that carry over to usage stats like in that article?

sure. any website or server that tracks hits to their site can log the user agent info from each device. any rooted user can make their user agent and/or build.prop look like any device and platform it wants. to the outside world (server) it doesnt know the difference.
It's like I'm a ****ing psychic or something.

In that case, i say we all edit our build.prop to show version 5.0 and pay some websites a visit
