Epic siting - Epic 4G General

Omg I was at a bbq place I'm overland park and I saw some asian men with epic 4gs and I thought that was strange any ideas on how the accuired these
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App

I have seen some on ebay but I read some where that they released beta versions with 700 to 800 MHz CPU. The seller could not confirm if they where retail models with 1000 MHz CPU. I passed on the sale.

Well Sprints headquarters are in Overland Park, so that really doesn't sound terribly odd.

Any reason why you didn't knock him out and take it? lol
But my guess is it was an employee..not to mention someone mentioned they will be giving it out nationwide to some employees to test drive...maybe since they were near by they received the first batch of those?

Oh
Cool
Ok

thanks for the info OP. How close did you get to it? Could you smell the 4G goodness?

Oh yeah I actullay got to watch them use it and I was so jelous, I was amazed at how thin it was compared to my espresso

Thats funny, I saw some asian guys at Jack Stacks off metcalf in OP yesterday and i saw that they had a phone that resembeled the Epic 4G but i tried to get closer and they put it away, but i did catch a glimpse of it and was very impressed!

"Epic Sighting" please correct the title OP. It was a little misleading.
I cannot wait for this phone much longer =\

Really? I was a bit concerned about the added thickness due to the keyboard. As long as it isn't thicker than my Vogue I'll be happy, but I'd love for it to be thinner.

That's were I was yesterday aroud dinner at Jack Stack and it vouge is wayyyyy thicker than th epic
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App

Truthfully, phones like the Epic4G are so long and wide, they barely have to even try to make them thin because there's plenty of room to just spread everything out horizontally onto a single 2-sided circuit board using relatively normal surface-mount components. IMHO, the phones that were a REAL engineering marvel were the first PalmOS & Windows Mobile phones from around 2000-2004. THOSE phones were literally Chinese puzzles on the inside, with stacked & interleaved modules & components whose actual circuit design was the least of the designers' problems ;-)
Look at the teardown photos of an Evo. 5-10% of its interior space is basically a plastic frame designed to fill space around the battery and give them a mounting point for the camera and vibrator.

I can't wait for this phone, actually I can, I won't be in the states until the 23rd, but you know what I mean. I'm new to android also and have been doing alot of research and I am EXTREMEMLY excited about exploring. My last "smartphone" (if you want to call it that) was the first Samsung Instinct. I've been messing with the galaxy s here in Norway and its like day and night. I love this phone!! I can't wait!!

What do you guys think about your Slides? Do you regret buying it?

I'm actually really happy with it. Ever since I got team fenix's froyo on here, gmail has been syncing properly, I have all the apps I need. I play games non stop in lab instead of listening to lecture. The thing isn't a battery whore and can last up to 3 sometimes 4 days on stock battery. It's a great mid range phone. I have a laptop for movies and tv shows.
I love it, and I never regret anything in life i just hope tmobile would have told us about the mytouch hd so I could have waited for that, hopefully they have it in white.

I love mine. I had a BB for 3 years and this is so much better and you can root it and make it your phone. I am not crazy about customer service from T-Mobile latley but the phone rock. Easy to root and works like a charm...
To be honest I regret getting it. Not because anything is wrong on the phone at all but because there are better phones right around the corner. If this is the only decent phone with a keyboard and sense UI that comes out then I won't feel so bad but it really sucks to have a phone with just 600 mhz when phones with 1 ghz are dropping everywhere. I don't mean to rant but I just don't want anyone else to make the mistake of purchasing an almost outdated phone. September should be big for tmobile ust try to wait till then.

I've thought about this too. However, it's how technology works. The latest and greatest is always just around the corner. If you upgraded every time something better came out, you'd be buying a new phone once a month.

Switched from HD2, and completely satisfied, not worried about the 1ghz. Seems superfluous to me, I don't plan on running any benchmarks on this phone so, what is the point really. This phone is snappier than any 1ghz phone I've used, only phone I envy is the evo with the hdmi output.
*edit*
Extended battery would be nice though.

I am satisfied with this phone. It has great features and I personally like the sense ui and feel its better than the vanilla interface. My gripes with this phone are moreso with the manufacturer. This phone should have had a better cpu, more onboard space and it should not be as difficult as it is to send a mms message. Those are my only complaints. If, however, the rumors about the mytouch hd are true, then I am going to definitely purchase that phone out right and make this my backup phone.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Seems to be a great phone, little buyers remorse on not getting the Vibrant instead as it would be nice to have beefier hardware but it is a major plus to have the physical keyboard of the slide, and sense ui is rather nice.

Is it worth it??

buying a slide?
i currently own an Eris on VZW, and i was thinking about switching over to T-Mobile ( due to current promotions and pay cut ). With that being said the slide was the only device that caught my attention.
is it really worth it? i havent really caught the buzz about the device wanted to get some current user feedback.
Thanks!
-SoCal
Personally I love my Slide but if you have a few weeks to wait, for about the same money (depending on the mail in rebate) you can get the new G2 when it comes out
I really like my Slide and have had mostly good experiences with Tmo. I've never been on another carrier but I have listened to friends endlessly ***** and moan about Verizon.
Are you buying it to root and load roms? or just as a phone? The stock sense rom is a little bulky and sluggish. Most of the Devs bailed on the slide. Eugene, HTCClay and even though we have CM the wifi is very wonky. They either went to the Samsung Vibrant or HD2..... If you need a keyboard than maybe the G2. The rumor that it only has an 800m processor stinks. Its stepping backwards like the slide did. I have had the slide since day one. Rooted it first week and have loaded every rom out there. I feel like i did when i bought my intellivision or turbo graphix 16 or sega cd.........
I've had it for about four months and haven't had any issues that were not self inflicted (goatta love rooting ;-) ) . Just go into it knowing your not buying a top of the line phone. As nice as it is, and it truly is a wonderful device, buy it with the right expectations and you will be happy.

If you're going to spread your opinion, you should do some research first. Clock speed is irrelevant in this matter. It's a completely different type of chipset (Scorpion), that works much more efficiently and quickly than current Snapdragon and Hummingbird processors, according to the information we have.

IMO u should wait and get one of the two new phones that T-Mobile is fixing to come out with. This slide is only ok. Nothing bad to say about it (unless you wanna get choosy, like I am) but also nothing good to sat bout it if u know what I mean. Obviously there are better phones out there but not any that u can get from T-Mobile. This is just MY opinion so do what u want with it.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I would wait for the G2.
Waste of money IMHO. The slide is dependable but very low end. I would stick with verizon as well. Better phones and better coverage (at least where I am) also not as expensive.
it is good if you must go with tmo but then again I would say consider some of their other models or wait for some newer phones. Phones always come around the holiday season.
lettin the hussy role on my MT3G Slide
Slide is Tmobile's current top offering.
Is it worth it?
Sure; yes.
Wait for the G2, or choose another carrier for their high-end phone.
But the truth -- is that the Slide is holding it's own with phones with better specs.
That's the hype you'll be hearing about the Slide (at least for a while).

Agreed, if you need a phone NOW the Slide is T-Mobile's best phone. If you can wait a bit, the G2 will be the way to go.
The Slide is a great phone, but the G2 is only gonna be 20 more, so I would wait the 3 weeks and get the G2. If I had known this was definately coming out in September back in June when I got the Slide I would have waited.

Played with a G2 this weekend [review]

gotta say.. its nice..
My buddy FINALLY got an Android phone. The G2. He decided on that over the Sprint Evo Shift 4g.
The phone is built quality. I like the way '4g' utilizes the 3g radio, and not a separate radio to toggle. Automatically switches to the faster network.
4g tests, both had full bars. The Sprint 4g was consistently faster by alot, 6.5mps vs 2.5mps although on 2 occasions the Tmo 4g reached 6.5mps as well. Latency was consistently much lower on Tmo.
The keyboard, it took the epic for me to take interest in keyboards again (after horror of PPC6700/PPC6800-mogul) Quite a different feel in the buttons. They are big, although the overall footprint is smaller than the Epic's. And they are mushy feeling. I feel a harder button reacts faster for quick button mashing style texting.
At least for me. But is something I could get used to. The hinge I do no see to be a problem at all either.
The phone itself is a little weighty. But that goes hand in hand with the strong industrial feel. The use of metal vs plastic feels of quality build. Makes you feel like it will break you, before you break it.
Screen size 3.7in Super-TFT, as coming from the mammoth Evo's 4.3in screen foundation, down to the pretty 4.0in found in the Epic; I didn't miss it. Those of you spoiled by the Samoled, one thing you wouldn't get over are the black levels. Not nearly as breathtaking..
800Mhz was pretty quick in stock form. Didnt notice a difference between the Evo or Epic's powerplant while stabbing at the screen and instantly having a reaction.
Charging time. Typical HTC, utilizing fast charge system. Noticeable much faster charging system than what is implemented in the Samsung Epic. Placement of the charging port is a bit cumbersome for one-handed use, [protrudes from left of device] as one may find it difficult to manage in the left hand. But when using the slider, the port is located at the bottom now and is free from obstructing your commands.
Compass, sensors, GPS, and magnetic shielding. As expected, the HTC had no problems locking on being inside the home. I have to make mention that the Samsung also had no problem locking on under the same conditions.
The compass in both were accurate, [using the Compass app free in market] but the compass was much more reactive to every movement. Though I suspect the 6 axis accelerometer in the Epic to be reason.
While still using compass, holding the phones side by side resulted in the Epic's compass to completely change course. The Epic is terribly vulnerable to interference, as the G2's compass stayed rock solid. I am willing to bet that this is the result of lack of magnetic shielding.
So there you have it, my impressions of the G2. I find it hard to believe that I will purchase a Samsung mobile device anytime soon. As to me, HTC is still the best manufacture currently of phones out today. Not talking about whats on paper, but under real world use.

Thank you for that, just wanted to express my experience with the device. But it turned into a review the more I went on lol.
Yes I know its hard to wing off the Iphone users lol.
I admit I am anti-Iphone but its because of facts and opinion, not fanboyisms.
But my bud always had the candy bar phones from cricket, sprint, tmo, and he always could not understand why I am on my phone so much. This was even back when I had the mogul, diamond, hero etc.
its been growing on him after I have shown him things on the Evo and Epic. He admitted its cool, but he would never use all that. He just needs a phone to make calls and text he stated. The Epic really did a number on him because he know how I wireless tether, how pretty the screen is etc and wanted a phone to do all that now lol.
He first decided to get the android device from Cricket, the Ascend, and was curious if it could do at least half of what mine did. Well the very spotty coverage shot that out lol. The reason he is not on Sprint with the Shift, is because he didnt wanna spend the extra money of of pocket (rebate)
But even at that, he is paying off the phone monthy like 20$ <- you can beat Tmo with payment plans for phones. Wished Sprint did this.
My bud is super happy, never puts the phone down lol. I am glad to be such an influence.
Nice review man... I like to see our phones compared with others even though it seems to loose this one with the build quality and such... good job.

I'd honestly say that the Epic owns pretty much every other phone...
... except for the build quality, support, and just the manufacturer in general. I must say that I love my phone. But, the GPS not working, the keyboard missing keys, and the crappy support just KILLS it.
I owned Htc MTS3gs and 2 samsumgs(Epic and Behold 2),i gotta say that from that expirience Samsung has better hardware and phones feel more solid, but MTS3Gs was so snappy and lag free for a 600mhz phone it was amazing even with Sense.
2G is only 3.7 screen and no Amoled so its no go for me.Until htc starts making Amoled screens im not fckin with them-i refuse to use regular lcd phone even if it has dual cpu and nvidia.
I got tired of my Epic missing keystrokes and Sprint's flaky 4G service so I switched to the G2.. Much happier. Here in Atlanta, HSPA+ is a steady 6mbps indoors and out, and like you said the latency is much lower.
If you want to jump ship to TMobile, this phone is being offered free with contract (I think) so it's definitely a good deal.
After dealing with the Moment and then the Epic's problems, I've gotta say that HTC is simply the better choice.
Thanks for that. I posted this morning, on my FB this: Debating ending my 8yr relationship with Sprint, and starting up TMO? I ended up with 58 replies in that thread. Yes I know I will miss the pretty screen, the hummingbird etc. but the G2 felt fast too. plus it can be OC beyond hell, takes advantage of JIT, Dev support etc.. its looking mighty fine lol
I gotta friend thats gonna hook me up with a good deal when i switch. gonna pickup the mytouch 4g for the baby mamma, and g2 for myself. BUT I will be back on the Sammy Vibrant 4G when that releases as it will utilized the UPGRADED HSPA+ 21mbps (and later on 41mbps)

Nice review, it is a nice phone. Just some input from a former Nexus One T-Mobile user. I absolutely loved my Nexus One but just could not put up with T mobiles spotty coverage hear in South Florida. It was almost unbearable. I truly believe carrier coverages vary from region to region but here in South Florida T Mobiles coverage was super spotty. Sprint coverage down here is definitely much better but I would love to see how the new T Mobile 4g coverage performs because Sprints 4g coverage is horrible! My phone is constantly going from 3g to 4g down here. Very annoying!

I actually bought the G2 the day it released(it's early release) and I loved it...Honestly the only unappealing thing I can think of is the screen quality compared to the Epic. Nothing beats the epics screen. But the G2 Blows the EVO away IMHO.
Unfortunately I seem to live in a t-mobile black hole and couldn't stand not being able to use the phone at home so I turned it in and got the Epic.
I do miss that phone...
thanks for the input! where I live at home I get badass coverage for 4g with Sprint.
now very true, the coverage is verrrrry spotty.. it works here and there in a 0.2 mile difference in distance.. even look up the coverage map and that even shows it.. I will have 14 days to decide TMO works for my needs, where I live and around. (also hate that 4g drops on the epic under load)

Anyone else actually considering the Vibrant 4G?

I'm a serial phone swapper , but I'd have to say that the Vibrant (all GPS issues, the plasticy feel about it and lack of Samsung updates aside) was one of my favorite Android phones.
I'm seriously considering picking up the Vibrant 4G when it comes out. I love the screen, the call quality , and signal strength that it had. If this 2nd edition of the Vibrant lives up to those qualities of the first, I have no worries about picking one up!
Anyone else considering getting one?
If it was time for me to update on my contract I probably would.
I absolutely love this phone! Thankfully I've had no issues with GPS and honestly it doesn't feel as solid as my old G1 made by HTC. I only have a cheapy silicone case on it that I literally got for $3 from Japan thru ebay, and I've dropped it a few times from around 2-3 feet and the phone didn't miss a beat.
So even tho it feels light and cheap it def holds up, even with just a cheap case.
And yes , Samsung is horrible with the updates, but we've also found that it is also TMO's fault as well.
But IDC bout updates, we have the greatest devs giving us ROM's that make my phone feel literally 10 times faster and smoother than my g/f's stock Nexus S!
Also, I got a front facing camera from a buddy for $20. So My phone will be exactly like the 4G, aside from the fact of the 4G speeds of course.
i really was thinking about getting it and actually got as far as almost completin gmy ebay listing to sell my current vibrant before the price drops....but then i looked up some more details about the 4g and found out that it only has 1gb internal memory. Also, since the devs currently have vibrants, and the vibrant 4g isnt ThaT MUCh of an upgrade, i think they will stick with the current vibrant. So then the dev community will not be that strong for the 4g. Agreed, its an easy port between the two phones, but I personally have no idea how to do it and im pretty sure that all devs will be busy porting 2.3 etc to the current vibrant to pay much attention to the vibrant 4g....so im not jumping ship just yet
no
maybe when my 3g speeds max out everywhere i go, t-mobile lifts the 5gb throttle limit, or i actually find a use for a FFC. until then, i'm fine with the original
Not with Pyramid around the corner.
I figure by the time that the Pyramid comes out I'll be shopping around again LOL

I am actually considering it, first i will see how far i get with customer loyalty(because my gps never truly worked on any rom), we've been with tmobile since voicestream(Probably won't matter to them anyways). If customer loyalty is willing to send a vibrant 4G at a reasonable price i will get it, if not i will wait for dual core. Honestly unless another manufacturer comes out with a super amoled+ display i don't see myself leaving samsung. They suck with updates but xda pushes out way better roms than stock.
My wife works for Tmobile so I'll be getting it She gets 3 free phones a year...so yeah
I won't be spending money on it, but I will be calling the customer loyalty department and finagling a free Vibrant 4G out of them for pulling a shenanigan like this.

1gb is for apps. And I believe its like 1.8 not 1gb.

T-mobile Galaxy S 4G vs VIbrant 3G

We all know that the Galaxy S 4G(aka vibrant 4G) has been released as of feb 24. My question and im pretty sure alot of people would ask the same, IS IT WORTH IT...or should I wait til Galaxy S2 comes out. I currently have a vibrant and ive been checking the specs and literally nothing is different to me except the front facing camera and HSPA+...whats do you guys think
You kind of answered your own question "and literally nothing is different to me except the front facing camera and HSPA+"
If I were you, I would wait for the sgs2, like i'm doing

So no, not everything is the same. It's a bit crappier with this little memory.

Have a friend that actually got the 4g and took it back the next day when I showed him I am getting upwards of of 7-10 mb download speeds and the loss of the internal storage.
They really screwed up with the 4g. Will wait for the gsII

I don't think they screwed up the 4g version, but I've been noticing a trend lately of manufacturers leaving out internal memory in lieu of a larger external. It would be nice if no one bought the 4g, to show Samsung they should step up their software development and quality control.
I've finally stopped worrying about my device being inferior though. It's no longer top of the line, but a very solid upper-middle range. I can live with that.

It is the only thing that matters, to me - but, #NeverAgain
Can't wait till my first bucket of stock vests & I can blow a small bit of cash to get away from Samsung.

Honestly samsung pulled an Apple on this one... had the SAME exact phone (ie iPhone 3G & iPhone3GS) and changed like 2 things on it, and called it "The next greatest thing" haha if you're a sucker for hspa+ in the same phone you already have then I guess its the deal for you... personally i'd just wait for something that is actually superior. jmho
4g hasn't reached the ghetto. 3g Vibrant ftw. Typically seeing 3-5 mb/s.
if SG2 really is coming to Tmobile US, then hopefully something by next year will be better cause my contract ends on 2012 of april
I have the vibrant while a friend of mind has just got the galaxy s 4g. The phones look almost the same another use the same cases. Tin only difference is the 4g and the front facing camera so even if i had the chance to get the galaxy s 4g i would just wait

My 4G is goign back.
I actually like the 3G better.
I see no difference in download times, and the Sdcard is a slower class 2, Which sucks.
I actually found the 3G to be better speedwise in overall operation.
Wow suprised to hear that!
