The kite UI project was created to provide Android users with a beautiful homescreen. It's key features is the coherent minimal design, the access to the most daily functions from the home screen and the smooth jump from it to the different applications.
The kite UI is built off of a pretty simple idea:
You have 2-3 views in every app. Flicking left from the middle view will bring you to the right view and vice versa. While you are in the right view, for instance the 'social' view, you can dig deeper by pressing on a friend. If you want to move backwards in this view all you do is flick right. If you are in the left view you move backwards by flicking left.
Simply put, when you're going deeper within a certain view you move further away from the middle. Moving closer to the middle equals moving backwards until ultimately your on the first 'level' of the view.

Homescreen example
The 3 'boxes' on the bottom of the screen, which show were you are, also acts like the app launcher. However, depending on which page you are currently viewing it brings up different menus. On the homescreen it brings up all apps while it on the social page brings up apps that are directly related to social medias like twitter, facebook, flickr.

*Updated* 2010-12-01 - Video teaser.
Finished the video showcase of the user interface. I'm currently too tired to update the thread or answer PMs and questions on the thread but I will try to get to that on the train to/from school tomorrow.
Video Teaser: Watch in 720p.
Enjoy!
*Updated* 2010-10-20 - Development goes on....
First of all I would like to clarify some things about this project.
Kite UI is not a theme, it is a completely new and unique User Interface. It will be available for Devices with the resolution 480x800 (and up) running Android 2.1 (and up).
We are really appreciative to all the interest that has been shown. However, with all due respect I must say that finding PMs like "can i plz test it" in my inbox is rather annoying.
If you have some serious skills that could be useful in development, feel free to PM me.
Back to the UI then. I recently got a new idea of how the interface should work and I have also altered the views slightly (to the better). This means that some of the pictures in this post is more or less obsolete, even though they still give you a good idea of what it is all about.
I will go into further detail about what is changed in the near future.
Edit:
If this thread is a little scarce on updates don't worry. It is simply because what is currently going on "behind the scenes" is more or less boring dev stuff.
*Updated* 2010-09-28 - Development has started.
Alright, so we have now started the actual developing of the UI. We are however, still in need of a few more coders for this project. Specifically coders with experience within programming on the Android Home API. To apply for the team, simply send me a PM.
As far as testers go we do have a test leader, but we have yet to decide who else is going to be on the testing team.
Audio and additional graphics designers are not needed at the time being, but might be asked to join in the future.
*Updated* 2010-09-26 - Rewritten presentation, list removed from post.
And yes, I got some inspiration from the HTC1 concept but this idea wasn't initiated by it. What was inspired by the HTC1 concept was the implementation of Flickr pics in the friend stream and how the clock and weather was done as one single widget. However I think we all can agree the end result of my clock look almost nothing like the original HTC1.
I stated this a couple of posts ahead but I guess I should've written this in the original post.
*Updated* 2010-09-20 - Teaser Promos.
If you are on the list of devs (language excluded) expect to be notified by PM sometime this week.
*Updated* 2010-09-17 - Ratio Changes, Redone art and New art.
Alright, I got some explaining to do so I'll go right ahead. I was supposed to look into the actuall developing of the UI at the end of August, but unfortunately I didn't. I'm not going to go into detail about why but it was a mix of school and prolonged work which left me with very little spare time to do much else.
Anyway, enough with the excuses. The last couple of days I've been doing some changes to the concept art. For some (stupid) reason I decided to use a resolution of 640x960px when this was first started, however that is now changed to 480x800 (hdpi). When I changed the ratio I also did some minor changes to all views, some was completely redone and some new where added.
This project is however still in concept art stage. Other than the ratio changes and some new views - done the last couple of days - the development has been at a complete standstill.
However this is about to change. Even though I go to college and study pretty much I will from now on focus my spare time on this. The list below has been modified with some new interesting people but to make sure the team doesn't get too big I will try to make it shorter in the following days.
Developers will be picked based on experience and how much time you can spare in a week.
Testers will be chosen based on devices, spare time and when they 'signed up' and if more testers are needed then we will work our way down the list. This means that if you are on the list you are not yet guaranteed to be on the team.
uhm..I very like this idea.....
pm me if you want someone
That weather/clock widget is amazing.
Interesting concept. Wish I had some skills to help you.
Bump! *updated* 2010-07-31
New Screens and more specifik descriptions of the project. I thought I might have been a bit unclear the first time...
I could help with some of the coding. I'm not a android dev god, but i can do some decent coding, and if i don't know how to do it i'll find out
If i can join i'll be ready to work on saturday, because i'm on vacation until then
I like the silky smooth white look you're going for, I love designing UI's as well
This looks epic, I'd be glad to beta test when that time comes. Unfortunately, I have no coding skill at all (I had meant to start learning Java over the summer but I've been lazy), but again, this looks promising, and a great way to keep Android fresh for older phones that won't get official updates to Eclair or FroYo (let along Gingerbread/3.0). Excellent graphic design.
I'm wouldn't be able to build it... but I'd sure be glad to give feedback/test it all
WOW! i really like this it's very nice hopefully it's fast 2
i would rly like to test it if it's in beta fase.
Will test when ready for testing. Sign me up.
Wow looks good. Wish I had coding skills! Would love to test this

I've recently been working on some simple designs for a Coherent User Interface for Android and I thought I'd start with explaining why I first decided to start with my sketches for this project for a UI.
(Should you not be interested in why - just scroll down to the /// mark and read about/look at the interface as of yet)
The first time I used an Android phone for more than 5 minutes was earlier this summer. The first thing I realised was that I liked the phone itself, which was my brothers htc Hero, but I also liked the feature of SenseUI. The apps being accessible trough widgets 'on the homescreen' rather than trough a list of apps with respective icons (like the iphone) was the key benefit for me.
However something bothered me with the SenseUI. First of I dont like the design of the greyish 'console' on the bottom of the screen and I would much rather have a design that fits the background picture better. I must however say that I respect the customization abilities, but unfortunately the problem with this feature is that it looks like those widgets where put in last minute without any respect for the rest of the UI - it doesn't feel cohesive.
Enough complaining. To the point!
///
I wanted a UI with a simplistic design that makes the beautiful background picture fit perfectly with everything else that I might interact with. I also wanted to keep the benefit of having everything accessible from the homescreen (rather than forcing me to an ugly app list).
So the challenge here was to incorporate the most daily functions with the homescreen and its background picture and make everything look cohesive and thought trough, rather than last minute, while keeping a simplistic yet beautiful design.
I'm calling this project kiteUI to begin with. The UI is much like SenseUI in the way that you swipe back and forth between pages, however the pages are dedicated to the most daily uses in order to maintain that consistant look.
This overview pic shows how the 'pages' relate to eachother
Here are the screenshots with descriptions for the current graphics.

The apps/games/settings list (lvl2) is not necessarily a part of the UI itself. It's rather a replacement for the current standard app list. The important thing about this project is to maintain that coherent look all throught the usual apps, wether it is the UI itself or a complimentary app list or phone app.
However, the switch from the kiteUI to the app list, or any other standard app for that matter, should feel as natural as when swiping back and forth between the pages (lvl1, see overview pic).
///
This is very early on in the project though so there's obviously going to be some major bumps on the road.
1st - I will not use an Android phone 'for real' until the middle of August. Untill then the android emulator will be more than fine.
2nd - My skills are pretty much limited to graphic design and this is why I'm reaching out to coders, programmers, cookers (even beta testers, not yet though) that might find this interesting.
Programmers/Coders - Will take on the challenge of making the UI (or rather the widgets) itself and the new style app list.
Cookers - Will help make the ROM that uses the latest Android version with the kiteUI, app list, and all the reskinned standard apps.
I myself will do the designs for the UI and all the app list but also the reskinning of all the standard apps (and probably more).
I do not think this has to be so radical that we create a program from nothing. As I said I'm no programmer but I do believe that you could base the main kiteUI off of the standard Android interface source code but with obviously different layouts, graphics, animations and actions.
///
Do you find this interesting? Do you want to be a part of this? Do you have any skills that might come in handy?
Then send me a PM or feel free to share your opinions and thoughts below.
Thanks!

I hope so.
Unfortunally I have seen many nice concepts here, which never were impemented
*updated* 2010-08-02
Thats very true - most concepts, no matter what they concern, never make it to reality. However I'm willing to put alot of effort into this project. As you can see my concept art are pretty much final and already covers the main features.
Whats left other than finalizing the rest of the concept art is saving the "screenies" as resource pngs (or similiar type) and that's the easies part of it all.
For obvious reasons though, I'm not willing to put my whole spare time into this unless I know I've got some help on the other parts of this project. However since I now know that we have a programmer, cooker and some beta testers onboard I'm going to keep going with the 'concept art'. It's good to know that this is going somewhere.
For the time being I must however ask for a little patience. I quit my summer job at the end of this week and from that time on I'm pretty much free every evening.
From now on I'm going to make a list of the people willing to help out on this project in the original thread post and update it as often as possible. As soon as your help is needed you will me PM'd. To 'sign up' express your interest below...
I know i stated this before, bit i am good at cooking roms. I can also do some themeing, and some programming if need be. Pm anytime if need be

I'm running 32659 New Manilla.
How do I get all of the spiffy weather animations on the home screen and the weather tab? (TouchFLO enabled to show on the home screen) Whenever "showers" is displayed, it does the raindrops and window wiper animation, but none of the other ones such as the clouds on a cloudy day.
(First post, about a month long lurker.)

Which device are you using? You shouldn't have the raindrops/wiper animation in the Vogue. The Vogue does not have TF3D/Sense (which is what you are referring to). The version of Manila on the Vogue is M2D (or Manila 2D), which is a less graphical version of TF3D.
I thought it was strange as well. I had all of the animations when I flashed Super Hero 2.1 RLS1 to the device. I stopped using it and went back to a 6.5 ROM because it couldn't handle it and would lock up constantly.
Ever since then though I've had the raindrop and wipers animation on the Sense weather tab, and nothing more.
I'll try and get a screenshot some time- just have to wait for a rainy day.

I believe that you are right. I have not used Touch Flo, Manila, or what ever you want to call it in a long time. There was some animation with rain drops & wiper blades but not to the degree of Touch Flo 3D.

Yes way.. I also get it when it's rainy. Animation starts with raindrops and then the wipers comes in.
I never thought there was other animations? Would be cool to see what they look like..

Jeeeeeeeeezzzzzz,
If your going to be a news writer check your facts before you make statements.
EG your a smart guy and I normally respect your posts, flash your own ROM and set up M2D when it rains............raindrops and wipers......really......it's the only weather animation in M2D but yes it's there, and actually just as cool as the latest Android Sense version.
I know your guys (Lmiller etc) liked to troll the NFSFAN thread and talk about it's irrelevance, but NFSFAN, VIN, and WDM worked hard to perfect manila, including porting different parts of it directly from sense / 3d. This is one reason their ROMs though outdated are still relevant. Everything (especially manila) worked and worked well. Now that I have retired my Vogue I have flashed every latest ROM, they all have the base (not working well) manila files, no tweaks, no extras like the new date picker, calendar, sound profiles etc. Flash your last Vogue ROM, then NFS's and use TouchFlo, you'll see what I mean. I gave my Vogue to my son and he was disappointed, he asked what I did to it. I reloaded NFSFAN's ROM for him and now he's happy showing the phone off and impressing his Iphone toting friends like I used to do (of course he has my latest JMITR mega black theme on it as well).
Not taking away any of the rest of your work from you, I repect ALL fellow XDA'rs, especially devs BUT you guys never took the time to learn and tweak Touchflo / Manila / sense like the "older" chefs.

I am going to be as politically correct as I possibly can here.
First of all, I do not like to be called off like that. Yes, I am a News Writer and in fact, I am one of the Site's Administrators. My knowledge of Manila (or lack thereof) should be no reason for you to treat me like that. A simple "I believe you are mistaken because x y and z" would have sufficed. I don't give people attitude and I don't appreciate being given attitude either.
As far as your comment about LMiller, myself, and others being around in the NSFAN's thread (thing that I haven't done in close to 3/4 of a year), the only reason why we normally go into that thread is because tons of people still go to that thread for advise from an OP that has left that thread long ago. I respect his work as well as Vin's and WDM's (it is no coincidence that NFS rom is still featured in my tutorial thread. I know that there are numerous other newer roms out there, but his is good and bug free enough for anyone out there). I personally don't troll that thread, but rather help people out whenever I see something that I can answer. I cannot think of a less irrelevant thread in the whole Vogue section. That thread is full of useful info, tweaks, and more...
Why we don't go into manila/sense development? Very simple, I personally don't have the knowledge (LUA, among other languages required) nor the time to sit down and code/develop. In fact, I believe that there are very few people actually working on this thing as it is a dying UI. I don't like being called a chef, cause truth be told, I am not. I made a rom with a kitchen, added as many tweaks and useful packages as I deemed necessary and gave the people the chance to use a device for a carrier that does not have many preconfigured roms for. Plain and simple.
Lastly, if I have not seen the rain animation in M2D is probably because I never had data enabled in my account, so I never did use it. The few times I had my weather updated was by having it connected to USB and I only used it to make sure that the fix was working right, and considering I am in Miami, FL, you would have to understand that "rainy" is not exactly the normal weather down here. The only animation I was aware of was the flip clock... again, a mute point as I hardly ever used the weather tab.

No problems,
If I could take back some of my "tone" I would, you've admited to not having the knowledge of others, and even said you don't like being referred to as a chef.
Takes a man to admit he was wrong, you didn't blast off from my response, you admitted your lack of knowledge in some areas and I can't help but to respect that.
Please accept this humble apology for my tone I set in the previous post.
Also, yep you are a chef, I've tested your ROM and I think there's nothing wrong with it if someone just wants to use titanium, you guys picked up development after NFS and the others literally abandoned it and continued. The Vogue would have died a long time ago in terms of Windows development without you guys. I wish someone was as interested in Manila / sense but.....oh well.
Sorry again,
Jason

Okay WTF why can't I set the full wallpaper in Android? I mean MT4G is using WVGA 480x800 right? So WTF if I have same res wallpaper I can't set the full image without chopping it? Looks like I am already starting to miss the superior control of WinMo.
Also WTF is the background image moving? Is there any way to just make the wallpaper fixed in still form? So its on all 5 panels? What kinda crap is this.

Um, this is a joke right?
When it brings up the picture and you have the little box in the middle of the picture, touch/grab a side and drag it out. It allows you to crop the picture and use the part you want.
As for scrolling wallpaper, yeah, always been that way since the first android device, so NO, you cannot make it the same on every page.
Your post is really negative. Probably won't get a lot of answers like this.

Ya this is my 1st Android as I try to clearly stay away from iOS and wannabe google based BS they pretend to call Android. If this was WM lol it would take me 3sec to rape it and do as I want it. Ironic here Android is open source and WM is proprietary yet we have more control over it :O
if you want to "screenlock" your background Launcher Pro has that as an option, it is free in the market however you will lose most of your stock widgets (as they are proprietary to HTC Sense UI) unless you get the donate version, the developer has created his own verions of the most popular Sense widgets.
side note : if you are so anti-Android then why didn't you get the HD7 (since it runs your beloved WinMo) instead of the Glacier?
hypernode, U just lack the knowledge. If U looking to learn U might wanna ask without all the "If this was WM boy I would" stuff just because U have more knowledge about WM. Android is just as customizable as WM, just does everything better. I own a touch pro, and touch pro 2.
So wait you are telling me that no one complained about this BS before other than me? find it hard to believe as its same concept as desktop environment console which came from ironically from UNIX world 30+ years ago and before Win platform made it mainstream yet on so called Android PPC variant we don't have this? WTF how old is Android again? They don't even have this basic setting? I mean some folks might want to use wallpaper with lower/higher res for example in display tile, center, stretch and use it as is without chopping it.
BTW I am not anti-android I just hate Google gl with your info being passed around googleware. Its a privacy thing but they sure did a mockup job of Linux based PPC here. Also WTF would I want WM7? Have you seen that POS? lol whats with the tiles? Sorry I am not 5years old M$ failed again.
Would you want something like this?

The only reason I picked MT4G was due to its superior hardware spec's thus promising much more capabilities. This was the only alternative other than HTC DHD which I can't use in USA due to no 3G so I picked this one. But I am not paying $450 for HD7 when its same BS as HD2 which we had since 2009.
I just find it odd that Android lacks so much which I find unbelievable for an open platform and I don't plan on becoming an Android developer just to apply wallpaper lol I mean this should have already been documented. Trust me I know I come from the real *nix world. Then again I had it for like a day maybe I should give it more time.

hypernode, U just lack the knowledge. If U looking to learn U might wanna ask without all the "If this was WM boy I would" stuff just because U have more knowledge about WM. Android is just as customizable as WM, just does everything better. I own a touch pro, and touch pro 2.

lol knowledge to setup wallpapers? are you serious? they should have just "had" it. So you are saying no one ever noticed this before? I mean we are not talking about setting up UDE here on a server remotely then allocating XDesktop daemon. Then manually editing the display init via console with editor. Ohh man I can see now ill end up being a Android dev due to so much BS lacking. Hell if I can code AI's lol and my own filesharing client on my own network. I am sure this mock of OS won't be difficult as nothing to reverse engineer. Maybe I should give it few sometime so I am use to it.

Scrolling wallpaper has been out since the G1 over 2 years ago. If you are as smart as you claim to be, do 5 minutes of research before buying a phone. There are thousands of videos online showing the Android home screen. You could have watched a few, decided you didn't like the wallpaper scrolling and asked someone BEFORE you bought it, if it was possible to not have that. Besides that, walk into a T-Mobile store and use the phone for 10 minutes, see if you can do what you want.
You are acting so negative that Google didn't add the features YOU want, but you didn't take any time to research a product before you bought it? It sounds like you jumped in head first without looking anything up and now you are mad at everyone but yourself. If you are so desperate to have a static wallpaper, download LauncherPro, turn on the setting to not scroll wallpaper and stop complaining.

I saw your HD2 wallpaper on another post and personally I don't like it. It looks chaotic, unrefined and just an overall mess. That is just my opinion, but lets get onto the real issue here, hostility. Why are you coming at everyone with such hostility, calling everyone a kid and stupid?
The second question is, if you love WM so much, why do you try to make your phone look like an android phone? I tried the HD2 (well, it was a friends) and I found it to be a disaster, nothing was in a logical place or order, but again, that is just my opinion. A lot of people love WM, just like a lot of people love Android for their own reasons.
As for the wallpaper, I guess Google made what they liked (and MOST user like) and left it at that. Wallpaper is such a small aspect of the phone that I never really cared to do it any other way.
Maybe you should sell your MT4G, buy a used HD2 and wait and see what WM brings this year because you really seem to hate your phone.
what a tool.... hates google and buys a phone with google's software on it....
P.S. If you have to list your case and screen protector in your sig - you're better off with jitterbug.
Just curious but you do know that the wallpaper resolution is 960x800 right?!
Not 800x480. Try that hater and see if it helps.
Borodin was right...what a tool.
You are all on crack, so get of it.
@setzer715:
LOL @ you for saying "It looks chaotic, unrefined and just an overall mess"
You are obviously crazy now look at the SS from what you can conclude from single panel you have all the information in it. But on Andriod you force everyone on 5-7 panels but can't even display that info in one? lol don't be silly if you have any clue in graphic design you could see how beautiful and elegant it is aligned with focal point and matching color theme. If you think it looks like mess well you should admit yourself in the hospital or something.
Why I love WM? Cuz I am starting to see why Andriod is POS now only way to get it working is download stupid apps. "You got app for that?" WM6.5.X is more mature and it evolved. If you don't like it then do WTF you want and make it as you want.
@CyberStorm98
Do search on the thread and post I created and tell me if I didn't do research lol from that you can see what? Are you guys serious? This is STANDARD future I guess most of you use Windows in home? If you used real Unix/Linux you would know what I am takling about here but then again its ironic? On mobile platform WinMo is superior where in PC *nix is superior. You are for getting Android is BS due to googles control. BTW I checked out Launcher Pro its POS and costs like 2.99 for Plus which is BS due to actually lacking this standard future. Most of you just like it cuz they just IMPOSED that BS on you.
@borodin1
What are you mentally handicapped? You can't afford case or anything? Thats like buying a car and you modifying without stating whats under the hood. Ya if you can see my sig you should have seen the 1st/2nd line on it or did you miss that? Only thing I see is ATM its POS Android that's holding the device back as the hardware is superior.
@CBConsultation:
LOL he is right the wallpaper resolution is 960x800 when the display itself is 800x480. Which does not even make sense is that another BS google created? Do I need an app to fix that BS also?
Android is POS so far to me and most BS is lacking but you can fix that just go to silly app market and install some adware app with google ads on it they claim is freeware. I mean WTF it seems most are run away Apple iPanzy users.
Now I know I can easily modify this BS myself but ATM I am having 2nd guess if I want to keep this device as I still have 12days to return it so IDK if I want to root it yet and rape Android for whats it worth and fix it myself. Lets see how things goes if I do decide to keep it might flash to diff rom and start cooking my own. Been using POS: Android for 2days and I am not impressed. Some of the BS don't even make sense its utter ****up to 9th power.
I mean IDK why so many fanboys cried about Android being superior maybe they just some mindless drones who ran of from iPhone or some **** IDK. Its seems like just to do basic BS I "HAVE" to download some bull**** apps. Ooh man and don't get me started as the app claims its freeware but its adware. No wonder Android users don't like WM as most of the thing is already there and when they make an app its actually does something lol its not replacing anything as its complementary.
1st step is rooting this device and 2nd is to install Android SDK. What an utter failure. Just to have some decent standard I have to cook my own rom WTF.
Great. Make your own ROM and quit whining already. You can't type a proper sentence to save your life so stop the babbling.
Can't wait to see your home grown ROM. I hope your coding skills are better than your grammar skills.
now that i got a chance to play with wp7 oon the hd2, i find the os boring. i do say thats it is and is not like the old winmo.
not the same because the ui is different.
seems the same because when you open the windows folder, it takes a while to load.
os seems pretty fast but how well does it do with lots of apps being loaded? im not too fond of the tile interface and the straight in line icon/apps. seems that if you have a lot of apps loaded, the single list will just get longer and that just looks dumb.
not looking for fight or argument, just what are your thoughts are with wp7 running on your hd2. i personally wouldnt but a wp7 phone as of now.
i do think the hd2 is awsome because we can run several os's.
Very boring, but that's my opinion
Its very basic because its very young.
M$ have said that they are working on allot more user customization. Stuff like the apps page will obviously be changeable at some point, hopefully in next update, if not its plain retarded.
Im currently dual booting WP7 with Android as I cant see me having it as my daily driver any time soon.
PS. This is a WP7 discussion so it should have gone in the WP7 general forum.
Ya I was not very pleased with M$ for some silly reason picking the horrible tile BS. I mean you want to have something nice looks good hell the whole 6.5.X base 29XXX was stable.
But the biggest thing M$ did was drop the legacy support and dumping CE now they can build it based on their own guideline which they outlined for WM7 spec, kinda like stole the play from Apple.
Would you want something like this?

This is WM7 on HD7, who would you take this?
Sorry M$ you did epic fail on building main screen user env. Maybe HTC should have stepped up and provided SenseUI over the tile BS and not make Sense dock though settings.
At the moment?????? Yes...It's very clean and user friendly but it's very boring... i switched to Android before 1 week until something new will come out!
only opinions....
for me this is the FIRST wp7 rom on hd2 and is a lot more functional than the android first ones....
the interface can be boring using it for a long time, ok, the same with apple...but i'm sure HTC and XDA can do a better work on the UI, hoping in MS update too..
i'm still of the opinion that is good for daily use. for me the essentials are phonebook, sms, email (very good), internet (android better for now, waiting for opera)
To me the biggest problem is the limitation of the UI.
Okay, maybe it can be funny the first 20 Minutes you used it, but after that????
I'm a big fan of personalization. and ok let be clear to me changing the color from Green to blue or orange isn't a personalization. I'm just missing Sense, (the big force of HTC)
To be honest except the Hardware look what is the different now between Samsung/HTC/LG/... WP7 versions? Yeah right no different.
I know everyone will saying it's new.... Yeah it is but at the other side, Windows don't tolerate that 3th users changed the UI. So, this means no Sense
Apart the fact it's running fast and stable. Yeah it border you after 20 Min.

LOL now that made me laugh, as I been saying long before WM7 even came out M$ sure thinks users are retarded or something as they designed this UI for 5years old? Its like they keep digging the hole bigger and bigger while being in it. I mean WTF they post to compete with AOSP and iOS with BS like that?
"I am WM7 look I have 4-5 tiles that moves, keep looking at it as it will move, oops BSOD" lol
Windows 6.5 was 100 times better in my opinion, and that even sucked. Long live android.
i have to disagree with everyone i suppose.
I dont think wp7 (not wm7) boring at all. In fact i think Android is very boring and outdated. I mean wm6.5 and Android just feel from ancient history when compared with wp7. I have wp7 more than a week and certainly not's boring. Its way smoother than Android. But i mean WAY WAY... smoother.
metro
actually it looks awesome on my omnia 7, less so on my hd2 coz of the washed out colours. I think its a great alternative os look. Im looking forward to folders coz the scrolling list of programs is getting to be a pain. love the sharp frill free magazine look which seems very 2011, all those rounded icons and faux shine fade of other ossers remind me of vista. plus its quite a popular look when yours eyes arent as sharp as a 20 something.
I dont bash other os.s. when youre locked into a 2 year contract people get quite attached and defensive of their phones.
I love the feel of wp7 compared to android. For everyday use of texting and calling I prefer it, but for more app intensive stuff I dual boot android. The UI of wp7 just works.
I think for thinkerers like most people here ANY OS that you can not pull down and build up ten times daily will be borring to us. Our phones have become our major toys. Before I moved over to WP7, I was flashing MDJ's Gingerbread every day, modding the battery icons and such stuffs. I can not do most of that with WP7 and it is a bit annoying.
But I think WP7 as it is now is already much more functional for what really matter in a phone, sms, email, contacts, social networking than IOS and android. The mostly text-based interface is clean, fast and readable. I have used all the rest, I think this is the best.
i like it. Actually all my phones and roms i used since wm5 and android i always prefered the closest to stock roms. I dont like funny things, collorful icons or "amazing" backgrounds...i want responsiveness, pratical and easy to use UI. No lags or bugs because i ****ed all the UI with random customizations.
And IMHO the problem with ppl saying its boring its because we dont have too many apps yet (or at least really useful apps) that uses tiles at their maximum potencial. So instead of dynamic icons on home screen you end up "watching" big blue squares or whatever is your color profile. Tiles is like widgets but better. One of the things ppl like android is because of the widgets. Afaik you cant do that on iphone (which is a REALLY boring device).
=]
Can't really complain much knowing well WP7 came out what 2-3 months ago (officially not the betas). Honestly I love it & this is coming from someone who went from an iPhone 2G/3G/3GS to a HD2. Yeah is missing tons of features that both Android/iOS have (background apps, copy/paste/tethering you get the picture). But so far I love it next phone I buy will most likely have WP7 on it
Found it boring at first but once you actually get involved with some of the non stock apps then it gets interesting.
I much prefer the way the UI works to Android although, as others have said, more customisation would be good.
Am now dual booting WP7 with Android (mainly for Wi-Fi tethering) but am using WP7 as my daily OS.
My first thoughts on wp7 were indeed along the lines of it being boring or suchlike, but now I've used it as my main phone for a week or so I'm liking it more and more, and definitely more than I thought I would like it.
On the whole, it works very nicely compared with winmo or android. Admittedly the androind nand installs were TONS better than the SD versions but wp7 just feels clean and uncluttered, and normally I like clutter.
The weirdest thing is that the thing I loved most about winmo (the ability to tinker as much as I wanted) is actually something I'm mostly not missing as this os just does a good job with a few exceptions.
I love that the AD2P or whatever it's called works really well with bluetooth, the wifi doesn't eat the battery alive, and things like that.
What has surprised me most is the fact that while I had zillions of app shortcuts on android & winmo, I currently have 24 tiles. That sounds a lot, but it flicks so easily & smoothly through that it's barely like you have to do anything. That's a mix of apps/contacts/settings/and favourite pages. It's made me realise that most of those countless app shortcuts I used to have just mostly never got used in reality.
BUT, there are things that drive me ****ing nuts with wp7. Maybe they can't be done yet, or maybe they can and I just don't know how...
Font sizes - on emails screen. It's WAY too big. I'm not a dribbling imbecile so I can read a font smaller than 22point or whatever it might be. I want to change it.
Email settings - haven't yet found one for data size/download sizes per message. Sure it must be in there though.
Contacts - you should be able to customise the display of them. The layout is stupid as you get big font for the names but tiny for the numbers. If you're in the car it's impossible to read what the number is against a contact for instance.
Apps - not enough, but we all knew that would be the case.
Tiles - not a big issue but it would kinda be nice if you could vary the size of them and the style a little. I'm not talking full on eye candy but a little extra visual bling wouldn't kill it.
The multitask thing. I want a call recorder and I understand it's impossible because of no multitasking. That's not good enough, and it's annoying to close my music playing while I go do something else.
Sounds a lot but mostly they're minor gripes and it's proving to be way better than I actually remotely thought it would be.
I'm hoping in due course that the uber clever tefal heads and boffins on here will be able to make it look a little prettier and address some minor issues, but it's doing well for such a new player I think.
I know WP7 is very new and look at Apple with the Iphone, no bluetooth, crappy camera etc when it first came out. WP7 for me has richer and more useful applications. I mean, flicking from page to page for BBC Mobile or ITN app is very pleasing and for me, better than Android.
I think what everyone is looking for is more customization. Not just changing colour of the panel but adding your own patterns, background image throughout and not just boring black or white. For me I would love folder options in applications layout and the ability to choose folder graphics or pictures. End call button being more big and bold, better internet explorer, damn is that just pants. I would also love more usability with press and hold user interface as well. Adding another layout than just panes, swipe right for applications but also swipe again for widgets so you can truly customise.
i think now Android has the edge but in time, if Microsoft listens to what people actually want then WP7 will be the phone to have.
I personally love it, but I am a 2 years Xbox live gold member so I am slightly biased in that direction.
Out of all 3 OSes I have used, WP7 has the most consistent UI across all of them, It's minimalistic without being condescending and is very robust out of the box.
Android I needed an alarm clock and alternate music player and Windows Mobile was even worse.
Don't get me wrong though, Gingerbread was awesome and I loved GTX Sense on my WM6.5.
It all comes down to preference really. Windows Mobile for tweakability, Android for updatability and adaptability; and Windows Phone for consistency, gaming and eye candy.
in it's current form is simple and a little bit boring.
I suppose this one is for the folks that are new to rooting and custom ROMs in general. I should say from the start that I am NOT a developer. Just a flashaholic.
I started out as a big fan of HTC's sense UI. I still appreciate the spit and polish of the little details in their work and will flash a Sense based ROM just to have my FriendStream widget back for a day or two. The visual appeal is still a few steps ahead of the AOSP ROMs that are available. Sense is also easy to customize, for the parts that can be customized. HTC offers a fairly good variety of stuff and in my experience most of the apps that make your phone "prettier" are compatible with my Evo.
Things started to change for me the first time I tried out a MIUI ROM. I was astounded to find out the number of things that my phone was capable of that Sense either locked out or simply could not integrate successfully. I got frustrated with the bugs in the version of MIUI I was using at the time pretty quickly and bounced back over to another Sense ROM. It took about 48 hours before I was so annoyed with the lack of user discretion in actual system settings that I hopped back over to that Friday's release of MIUI. I like that ROM in the overall for the ease of flashing. Just download, wipe, flash and voila! You're ready to go. What I didn't like was the amount of infighting and chaos that the American team seemed to be struggling through. This does seem to have been resolved. Now I just want to see them iron out a few wrinkles caused by the leap to GingerBread.
I do want to mention here that I still have the utmost respect for the people who bring us MIUI every week. Thank you to Stiffspliff, who brings a fresh port to our Evos every weekend, and usually less than 24 hours after the Chinese team releases it!
That being said, I looked at flashing a Cyanogen ROM and at the time was frankly intimidated by what was needed to flash it. Initially I couldn't even figure out the difference between Stable, Nighly, Release Candidate and Experimental. So, again, back to Sense for a while and yet more reading. It should mentioned for the sake of the new folks reading this that I have done, and will continue to do, a TON of reading. I spent six months just lurking here at XDA before I tried rooting and still needed help on IRC. Many thanks to Eyeballer over there for getting me through that process. Once I had enough confidence flashing different ROMs I finally gave Cyanogen a shot and was truly bummed at the lack of "bling". So I flashed back almost immediately. Curiosity is what made me want to try another CM ROM. What I didn't know at the time was that Cyanogen truly shines under the skin. It finally made sense (no pun intended) when a senior member here made the comment that Sense was just dead-weight on what is already an incredibly efficient OS. The number and variety of elements that can be modified to an individuals tastes and needs is mind blowing. With the bug fixes that came out with 7.0.2 today there is very little about Sense that draws me back. Like I said at the top, my FriendStream widget is all I really miss, since Facebook's widget stinks. And I am still having trouble getting my Visual Voice Mail working, but I think that has more to do with my lack of knowledge than any inherent problems with Cyanogen. (Yes, I have tried the fixes posted here but I'm probably missing something obvious.)
In summary, in my long-winded sort of way, what brought me to Cyanogen was wanting to have access to the full capabilities of my phone, not just what HTC thought we should have. I do still like Sense and am interested to see what kind of improvements are coming down the pipe. However, if those improvements aren't absolutely exceptional I'll be sticking to Cyanogen ROMs as my daily driver.
Before anyone gets all hot and bothered I should also say that I know these Opinions are not universal. There are a number of experienced and talented devs who prefer Sense ROMs. This is just me sharing my experiences for people who are on the fence about trying out a ROM that is more AOSP than not. The great thing about the community here at XDA is that you have a huge variety of well supported ROMs to choose from. So if you haven't already, give Cyanogen a shot. If you don't like it, pick a different one and flash away! I would also like to hear about anyone else's opinions or experiences on the subject.
I agree, cm7 rocks
CM7 is definitely an incredible ROM and, as you mentioned, the seemingly endless amount of settings makes it difficult to use any other ROM. One of my favorite features is the long press volume up or down to change a song, I use this feature so much and no other ROM has this option. As far as VVM and FriendStream, try google voice and Launcher Pro paid. Launcher Pro mimics the calendar, friendstream, and email widgets of HTC Sense, but function slightly better.

Firstly, Holy Smokes! Those are some serious medical terms in your agenda. Med student? Second, do you really know someone over in Hotchkiss? The only reason I ask is because I grew up there and in Paonia for a few years. Tiny town that I never would have expected to see the name of here on XDA. Your experience almost sounds like I could have written it. I went with mostly sense roms because I really didn't ahe the tech know how to feel comfortable with the "stripped down" AOSP roms. I installed cm one day and was, well, underwhelmed with the opening screen. I then went to Myn's 5, but found that 4g didn't work. I loved Myn's roms, but hated the idea of taking a step back to get a rom that had working 4g. Philly has 4g and since I'm paying for it, I want it! Then came the announcement that cm had working 4g. I gave it a try again. This time I was more patient and read, and then read some more. I found that I like Jorte's calendar better than the sense one. Then I found out how to put the clock and weather back on the main screen. Wasn't to my liking, but I made it work. Voicemail was a problem and I went to g-voice as many have suggest. It was okay, but kludgy for me. Then I discovered youmail. Very nice. My friends really like the custom greetings that it offers. Score! The other day Amazon had fancy widgets as their free paid app of the day. Well, as far as I'm concerned that was the missing piece for my home screen. With that installed I now have animated weather and clock running from one app again. Facebook still sucks, but its certainly no reason for me to go back to sense.

Since SE has confirmed ICS update for the arc/arc S, I think it is a good idea to discuss about the appearance of the firmware.
Personally, I'd like most things to be left as stock with some touches there and here to distinguish it from other ICS builds.
What do you think?
EDIT: No, this is not "just another ICS thread".

If it's really true, I'm very excitedly happy. Yay for stock Android
- New timescape version (might include timescape for application)
- Apps & Widget manager
- New music players
- More bloatwares
- Hopefully camera will be fixed
- System running faster
what happen to the camera?
Chances are it will come with the same old tired S.E U.I, which isn't really an issue as that can easily be changed.

I don't think SE is that dumb to change the whole appearance of ICS lol..
why would they even do that? maybe a little touch to make it more attractive than the others but why would they make it into a TS UI? LOL makes no sense to me as the holographic engine of the ICS FW is so damn awesome & sleek :O
I think it would be great if sony put its touch in the interface while keeping it ICS
look in general.
Camera compression is the only adjustment I care about. Make it better or lose a customer
Full blown SE customization.
Stock android is boring (at least for me)
- Hardware accelerated graphics -> smooth, lag-free scrolling and navigation !
Never in my days will I understand anyone who thinks the left is better UI design than the right >.< But each to their own I guess
I like se one over stock gingerbread .but ice cream?iam not sure

I hope and think SE will combine their amazing UI design skills
with ICS.
ICS is not so beautiful everywhere however I think - I really do! - that some ICS UI elements are actually inspired by SE.
SE has the best UI on smartphones IMO.
I like ICS home launcher, but I also like SE's home launcher, so I hope to have the functionality of SE Home launcher with the stock launcher + SE theme.
I like some of SE functionality also like Facebook inside Xperia.
but there's things I hate, SE must, and must and MUST do something regarding it...
1- the added pre-installed apps I hope SE make them optional, these are forced to be in the phone even if the user doesn't want them... yeah make them already pre-installed but don't make them system apps so we can remove what ever we want to remove.
2- The Home launcher & browser both should be Hardware accelerated, and Home launcher should be loaded in Memory all the time, and make the browser have this option also.

Erm, you've got to be joking?!! The Google ICS image on the right looks like a cluttered, cramped and confusing mess. The SE image on the left is clear and simple. Also look at that pointless big grey bar at the bottom of the screen on ICS - what an absolute waste of screen space.
I also absolutely hate the way ICS on the Galaxy Nexus wastes screen space for those pointless software Android buttons. Slimline tactile buttons as on the Xperias are a superior solution.

I'm not sure whether you can already do this or not in ICS, but I think there should be a way to add labels to pages in your app tray. I see Google has added tabs for "Apps" and "Widgets", but I think this is a pointless change. I don't need a Widget tab, nor do I want an Android Market tab (it's there for no other reason than Goog£€ making sure to promote its ridiculous 30% cut on app sales). What I would like is the ability to create custom tabs to group my apps (or, alternatively, the ability to create folders) in the app tray. Ironically, Google have moved to SE-style side scrolling for apps, but with custom tabs vertical scrolling would actually look better!
I would also like companies like SE to neuter Google's power a bit more. I simply do not trust Google (I think it is becoming too big, powerful and "big brother" like) and would like SE to add features such as the making it more configurable what data Google receive, and reduce the dependency on Google services.
I also wish SE would stop forcing Facebook on users, and allow users to remove the Facebook app and all Facebook features - not only is the Facebook app badly written and a CPU and battery hog (which runs in the background even if you sign out), Facebook is another company that I do not trust at all.
I have to agree with Paul. I'm not a big fan of the ICS UI. I particularly don't care for the soft buttons at the bottom of the screen. I prefer a clean, simple look. Albiet I haven't used a true ICS ROM, but I have flashed ICS themed ROMS and don't like it all. Call me a creature of habit, but I have no plans of installing ICS when it's finally released.

I forget to say,
1- Add support for USB-OTG Mass Storage, and please for any newer phones, even if you will add large internal memory ( like 16GB ) add also a microSD slot, it's a must, and AFAIK missing the microSD will mean no USB-OTG Mass Storage...
2- Support WiFi Direct
I don't know if you're aware, but when ICS comes to the arc, or any other device with buttons, the soft buttons are disabled and it functions as normal.
Also the ICS themes for 2.3 are not at all a fair indication of the user experience. Most of the joy of ICS is its the first version of android with some degree of descent UI consistency.
I agree, the SE overlay is the best android 2.3 interface around. But android 2.3 UI sucked, it was a mess of aged, inconsistent graphics design. Sony took it and built an aged looking but more consistent UI design. Google have actually gone and made a stock UI in ICS that looks stylish enough to stand out in this world of simple, modern interface design.
But as I said, each to their own I guess I for one will be updating as soon as possible, ICS brings so many great new features to the table, as long as Sony doesn't spoil them, I think it's going to be a great update
