[request]Custom ROM for improved bluetooth stack? (wii mote app) - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi, i asked this question a while ago and the only real answer was down to the phone using samsungs bluetooth stack rather than googles stack. i see they have got around the problem on some of the HTC phones....
for example would a Cyanogen rom potentially fix the issue?
is this a problem we can solve with a custom rom? or is it still more of a serious issue with the drivers still? for some reason i see some people are saying now we have clockwork recovery it may boost chances of a Cyanogem rom? why would this be?

I was just about to post a similar thread myself!
I think the problem lies in Samsung's non-support of the HID bluetooth profile, surely a dev can add this support for us? Its been done on other phones to enable wiimote support...
The addition of this would make this phone nearly perfect for me, then I could play GameBoid/PXS4Droid on TV Out with my bluetooth classic controller, which would be GAS!

This is something I'd really like to see fixed as well - I sent a support request to Samsung on Friday, I've yet to get a reply but that's not surprising considering the weekend.

glad im not the only one who wants this!
wish i knew enough about it to offer serious suggestions

I think either an official FroYo update or the unofficial Cyanogenmod will let us do this. I don't know how much of a challenge it is/would be to take the bluetooth drivers/stack out of a current Cyanogenmod ROM, and whether they would even work with the Galaxy S.

I wish to have a full bt support too keyboard, controllers, mouse etc i can't believe ios4 has keyb support and android no

where is the FM radio

i remember lookin through alot of web sites and reading that froyo was going to have FM Radio...now that google posted the features i dont see it... where is it!!?? did google forget lol?
It was one rumor, on one French site. From a guy who said an HTC rep told him what google was building. It wasn't very reliable, and anyone who phoned Google and HTC couldn't get the same info. Very sketchy and unreliable, but everyone ignored that because they wanted it so bad. The rumors spread all from that one post onto thousands of boss, so it only looked credible.

An FM Radio is physical internal hardware.
A new OS update can't "magically" add an FM radio to all Android phones, especially ones that don't have it inside.
As for the N1, Paul from Modaco.com is working on it and hopefully will get it fully operational soon!

Really?
Well, the FM radio feature in this case is very device specific. They are not going to announce that as a feature, because it is not something that affects Android as a whole.
There is still a chance that the N1 build of 2.2 will enable the functionality.
Fm radio is a waste. I've had it on 5 phones and barely used it. Now with Pandora, especially so.

That means N1 DOES have FM radio internal hardware! Even if I rarely use FM radio but knowing that my dear N1 can catch some FM wave is more satisfied!

Pandora doesn't work at all if you don't have cell service, whereas FM radio will often work just fine.
I don't see how having the option could hurt, especially since the N1 has the hardware already. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right?
The details for the N1 specific froyo update have not been shown yet, so we don't know.
What you have seen so far is just the updates to the basecode of android, not the update Google will push out for the N1. Likewise, the update for other devices will have different featuresets.
For example, expect the tethering options to be removed from basically any phone being sold through a carrier that offers tethering for a fee.
AOSP Code => Device Specific Code
At the conference => Not seen yet and will include stuff like trackball options (for N1 only)

Dead on and I was going to state that. The info on Froyo is just that Froyo, it is not the N1 that will run Froyo. So we have to wait to see if there is specific items setup for the N1 in Froyo that will not be released to any other phone.
like wireless n... which has been stated to come out on the N1, but wasn't mentioned yesterday in the keynote.

Again yesterday they demoed "Froyo" Android 2.2 not the Nexus One. Froyo just happened to be on the N1 cause that is Googles primary phone. They only demoed stuff that would effect all phones in the industry regardless of hardware. So yea, NO specific details would be given about the Nexus One cause it wasn't about the Nexus One. So Wireless-N, FM, screen fixes, memory increases, louder speaker phone, track ball light, and so on would NOT be shown cause those are N1 ONLY not FROYO. Same reason why they demoed a 2D game instead of a 3D game, cause some phones handle 3D better then others, but 2D is just about the same across the board.
Does everyone get this now?!?!?! I hate being so direct, but....
We will know about N1 related fixes/extras in the coming weeks when they finalize the N1 Froyo ROM.
This is obvious though......

According to posts on Cynogen's forum, his 5.0.6 mod already had 802.11n enabled. It's not going to say it right there on the phone mind you, but you should be able to tell by your home wifi connect.
I did note that you're unlocked but not rooted yet, so you wouldn't see it yet.

Will pure AOSP Froyo ROM ever be a reality on Samsung Galaxy S devices?

Im thinking of getting a Epic 4g when they are released but Im very hesitant on this because what I have read about Samsung devices being "locked down". First off I prefer AOSP over touch wiz or sense, and I hoping to see this possible on theses devices someday. From what I have seen this may come down to a driver issue as they are encrypted by Samsung. I also want to use Wifi Tether too. Id like anyone who knows about theses devices to shed some light on this and help me make a decision. I dont understand why manufactures feel they need to put crap onto of Android when is more usable with out it. I just wish Samsung they just gave us the option of either roms.

What nonsense
I'm a little confused about the situation with ROMs myself, coming from the Windows Mobile world. If the entire source to the build of Android on the Galaxy S is available, surely it's possible to change anything, theoretically? It also seems that the bootloader has no or negligible security as to what it can flash.
On the other hand, I've seen claims that it would be impossible to get Froyo or any future Android updates if Samsung don't release them first (I know they've committed to Froyo). Unless the driver model changes dramatically in Froyo, which I doubt since then new drivers would be required for every phone, why would it be any more difficult to port newer versions of Android to the Galaxy S than any other phone?

No, it's just that there are different components and layers which can be considered open or "locked down", and you both use different ones.
The bootloader for the samsung galaxy is not locked.
But there is an argument by the XDA forum member psychoace that some of the drivers for the galaxy S were not open sourced, and that in earlier android devices from samsung this made it very hard to create ROMs which are not based on Samsung's own ROMs.
As far as I know, this argument from psychoace was never countered, and so I see no reason not to believe it. (I did not look over the sources myself yet).
So can someone port new versions of Android over to the Galaxy S after Samsung has abandoned the device? I really don't know, but I wouldn't count on it, until someone who has experience with making custom ROMs says it is realistic.
The reason I state this is because other then the graphics, video playback, camera there is not much to shout about this device. The lagging is awful, it can't cope with multi tasking compared to say aswell the desire. The issue with the keyboard lagging. Internet crashing for no apparent reason. It seems as the samy gs cant handle the goodies packed into this device. No trackball, flash or led which is very useful.

as far as i understand it, the lagging issues are just because of the touchwiz and especially the samsung-widgets. removing the widgets and replacing the luncher with luncher-pro/adw will be the first thing i do when i have the device in my hands. on the other side: the hardware of the galaxy s is very good in my opinion!
@bookwormat:
i think you are wrong! i have read in some forums that samsung has released the drivers for 2.1 together with all other code! in fact i am just pulling the code (including the full kernel) from the samsung open source center (http://opensource.samsung.com/). it's huge, 148MB ... when it's finished i will give it a look an confirm what's in there and what not.
You might just want to take into consideration the fact that the Nexus and Desire had some problems as well right after launch.
The nexus took some time ( a couple of months) to set things straight, the Desire- A couple of weeks only. But it's understandable, since it's 95% identical to the nexus, so HTC probably knew what is going to be problematic.
Also, you're taking things to major extremes. You make it sound like the device is catastrophically slow to the level of being unuseable, and crashes every 2 minutes.
Reality, well, is different. The longest lag i had personally is 1.5 seconds when loading asphalt 5. Every other lag when opening an app- less than half a second.
I'd also like you to refrain from stating one personal problem as a bug in the device, you are the only known member in this forum that is having trouble with the keyboard.
A little search in MoDaCo forums reveals that some users are reporting slight problems with the keyboard, but it's limited to Firmware JG01 only.
It's sad that instead of taking a moment to see if you can solve these problems or helping others find a solution, you preffer to bash the device in every occasion.
For some reason Riz is really down on his SGS and to such an extent that it seems he's got a grudge against the device. Sell it or trade it in if it really makes you that unhappy.
For me it's really an awesome phone that comes with some minor annoyances that seem entirely caused by the fact that it's brand new. So far it appears that Samsung is putting a lot of effort in maturing the software and I expect the issues to be solved within a matter of weeks. In all reality it would take about 10 minutes to setup a new phone and have it operate well without even upgrading any firmware. A simple switch to launcherpro followed by a root with update.zip and then installing autokiller (i use strict profile) will solve 99% of the lag problems.
Battery life is very good after the first initial cycles.
GPS doesn't work right you may all ***** about that.
I'm sure I would be happy with the new HTC's, or even the iphone 4 (the thought of buying into apple's nasty attitude does make me cringe a bit) but I would still choose the SGS again providing they fix the gps.
Perhaps I'm being over critical but there are serious flaws with this device, there is no denying this.
GPS not working - there doesn't seem to be a solution, can't use copilot or googlemaps.
Lagging/freezing - changed to launcher pro not as bad but still occurs.
I hope the boys at samy are working hard to find fixes for these problems. If there are solutions then please guide me to them.
Don't get me wrong this device has potential and there alot of good features but due to issues mentioned above it just ruins the users experience.
I paid good money for this device not so that I could put it down but to use it. I'm just stating my experience for the benefit of others who maybe considering to buy this device.
If there are solutions wonderful p

Download the update.zip file from this thread.
Or direct link here
Copy the file to the internal storage card of the phone using Kies or whatever method you like.
Disconnect the usb cable
Turn off the phone
Press and hold these buttons at the same time: volume up+home+power, keep them pressed until you see the samsung logo.
Use volume rocker to navigate to update.zip and then press home to select.
Phone will reboot and you are now rooted with superuser.
The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.
I'm not responsible for anything
I like the phone but there are problems
1.keyboard has dup presses... solved with HTC keyboard. Also l key in portrait mode doesn't always work.
2. Gps lock not as good or reliable as my I 8910
3. StallING.. fix fixed it the only program that has a lag to load is sygic.
4. Image resizing not working well in gallery and web.
5. Still doesn't always switch back to 3g from edge. Jg1 is better than previous.

Bluetooth Issues: Could they be resolved by modifying a Rom?

Greetings fellow Droid Incredible users. I am interested in getting some information on the possibility of us modifying the bluetooth specifically in the Sense version Roms. The reason for this inquiry is I have noticed that wiimote works with Cyanogenmod on my droid incredible confirmed today in testing. It does not on the 2.2 Froyo Sense version. I'd like to keep sense and stock but have the full bluetooth capabilities of Cyanogen. I know this is a specific issue and that loading a non HTC sense rom is a work around. How hard would this be to do? Is it even possible?
thanks for your time and happy modding. Have to say these roms are a blessing.
Might I suggest the 3.21.605.1 RUU leak?
Some people are having doubts as this will be the offial OTA to be released tomorrow, but it is, says the same software verison on the Verizon page.
Bluetooth working peachy for me!
I tried the wiimote. No dice. Cook something up and I will be grateful.

Well since we are going THAT far lol, I know on HTC's dev website there is the 2.2 Bluez driver that you can take a look at if you have any development background.
http://developer.htc.com
HTC Incredible BlueZ Source Code (Froyo MR)
I wouldn't even know where to begin as far as that goes, hope that points you in the right direction.
I appreciate the responses guys. Keep them coming. I will be looking into a possible mod with the latest leak but a modified bluetooth stack to resemble/replicate the full functionality of the Cyanogen mod bluetooth on the Droid Incredible.
This potentially could add more functionality to bluetooth:
Connection to more bluetooth keyboards and other devices
wiimote functionality for emulators
other applications.
Bluetooth SPP and HID profiles are often used in many car types including BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagon, etc. Some people have been posting on the HTC site that they have lots of issues with bluetooth staying paired or even not pairing at all.
I believe we are working with a pre 2.1 Eclair bluetooth stack that HTC never bothered to update. Perhaps this breaks the Sense UI and they don't want to do the coding work for it work. I will continue to look for some answers.
My understanding is that there is something in Sense that does not get along with newer stacks.
Well how does the Cyanogenmod rom get the bluetooth stack working? Is it a simple file replacement or something complicated?
By not using sense. Something in the UI causes the broken bluetooth with the wiimotes.

I'm cheerfully bumping this thread. I do no want a wiimote on my Dinc (rooted with leaked 2.2 ROM), but I do have a dire need to support Bluetooth mouse and keyboard on my Dinc.
I do appreciate sense and I have applied cyanogen on my wife's D1.. which is perfect, for being on a Moto Droid..
So I'm with xarthos... i just want full BT features on my semi-stock Dinc.
on a side note... yet another reason is the fact that the BT audio quality in sense based roms sucks...
We setup cm6 on one inc, left the other with plain sense... even my wife could tell a difference in a blind listen test in the car.
almost like comparing a 64khz mp3 to a cd... massive sound quality difference.
Xarthos,
I hear many conflicting stories on htc bluetooth.
I understand htc has an incomplete broadcom chipset bluetooth stack in some models like the incredible. But this doesn't make sense since cm6 supports bluetooth just fine.
I can't really give you any useful help.
--But I do have $25 or more for the solution you describe.. Sense with bluetooth.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
This has been a consistant test for me as I jump around between ROMS due to the fact that I like to play my DINC emulators with a WiiMote (Yes, I'm nerdy enough to carry one in my backback when I commute). It's been pretty consistant that all the Sense ROMS don't work while the Senseless roms do.
Confirmed working:
CM6
Ruby 1.1.0 and 1.1.1
Confirmed not working:
SR 3
Virt 2.6 & 2.7
Leaked 2.2
Stock 2.1
Not Tested:
SR3 Vanilla
Why we couldn't take the bluetooth stack from one of the working ones and put it on a Sense one, I don't know. I'm honestly not knowledgeable enough to even attempt it nor know anyone who has. I've actually a little surprised this subject isn't brought up more, I'm guessing most people either don't use bluetooth or it works enough for their needs.
BUMP!
Is anyone looking into porting/adapting the CM6 BT Stack for sense ROMS?
I tried messing around with it, but am still having problems... I have a semi-flashable zip in progress if anyone can help me figure out what to do next.

[Q] Android A2DP quality (or lack thereof)

Okay, so the only thing that has me still thinking that WM6.5 is still superior to Android is the depressing quality of A2DP in the Android builds for the HD2.
I mean, granted it's higher quality than listening to music via the hands-free profile, but it is woefully lacking when compared to the A2DP coming from WM6.5 on my HD2.
I found a thread of Evo owners who are similarly upset over this, and there seems to be one ROM variant out there that addresses this for Evo owners, so surely this must be something that can be fixed on the ROM's for the HD2? (also, RIP Leslie Nielson)
The thread is here
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9888
Has there been any research into what (if anything) users can do to better the quality of A2DP on Android?
Yes.. thank you for sharing this issue with us.. i hope google will fix this bug.. it just gives some white-noises in a music! i can't describe it
EDIT: Check this out, someone actually found a way for it!

Check out this thread! Loads of us have been asking the same question for a while now. I wonder if it's fixed in Gingerbread...anyone tried it?
I have tried Cyanogen's new Gingerbread build on my HD2 and for the first time, I heard crisp, quality A2DP over my phone. It was awesome. However, I want to continue using my Froyo sense build so really would like to see a fix. It's possible....we just need a genius or 2 to work it out! I wonder if Cyanogen is contactable?
I am using the NAND stock Desire ROM on my HD2, and my AD2P is working flawlessly with my Sony Xplod unit in my car. HTC phones always worked good for me.

I've paid money to Samsung. Not to Cyanogen guy.

OK. We all have buggy gingerbread stock roms from samsung. That's impossible to play dungeon defenders on gingerbread for an example.
Froyo has two times better FPS on stock. Some 3D games lagging and dungeon defenders is unplayable with new gingerbread. Amazing smooth with cm7.
-Phone FC by years and years.
-Still there is a small lag with rfs and also with ext4.
-GPS is still horrible.
-RAM issues with touchwiz parts.
-Can't record video with front cam.
-Can't download most of file formats with stock browser.
-Stock browser is so smooth but touch trigger is sooooo wrong. I click to A and It opens B.
etc...
-Changing volume during playing music when backlight off is interesting. Totally muting?
-Software update takes 7 mb of ram. (wssyncmlnps) We have offical kies updates 1 or 2 month periods. And that eats my 7 mb of very limited ram every second?
-OMG I have free 10.000 free sms not MMS. And that stupid converting it to mms after 3 sms. I have brain to do this.
-I have ugly yellow tint on my samoled. Why I need voodoo to fix it? OK I've paid to supercurio. or samsung? Samsung?
-Press reader app NEVER WORKS.
When I go for CyanogenMod I feel what I have on my hands.
We all paid money to samsung. And look how this guys imporive a amazing rom daily. http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=galaxysmtd FOR FREE?.
Now we can get ICS or not. It's a chance. WHY? I can't understand really.
But If we get it. We have wait 7 months. Why? It will be buggy after 7 months or 17 months.

I'm not entirely sure I understand your thread.
There will probably be a new CyanogenMod that is based off of ICS source code once available. Or are you trying to show distaste for Samsung's update policy? If that's the case, then check this thread out. You'll find some sympathetic souls there.
What he means is that we should demand quality from Samsung, they sold us the phone they should be responsible for giving us quality software.
Everyone get's happy with custom roms, i'm not, i want Samsung to fix the problems, i want to use kies, i want quality from standard channels.

Everyone get's happy with custom roms, i'm not, i want Samsung to fix the problems, i want to use kies, i want quality from standard channels.
So far this is the most disappointing phone i ever bought.

Well that seems a little harsh to me. It's not as if they didn't update it at all. Oh well. I'm a fan of the custom ROMs, so I probably don't entirely understand your concern.
I imagined this phone as a perfect phone, but it's far from it:
- Slow downs do to RFS
- GPS is ... i can't describe it, it got better after 3rd time in warranty but still bad
- Radio is mono
- Crashes (the phone completely frose when it changed daylight savings time)
- In Gingerbread the phone can't handle some 3d games
In some seconds this is what i remember.
We've got and Android phone that is at the same level with iphone, compare your experience with both of them..
I know i'm being harsh, if it was an 100€ phone i wouldn't complain to much, but this phone was expensive when i bought it.
Indeed.
Cyanogen seems to be doing for this phone what samsung could never get done.
Samsung software sucks, always has, they don't seem to bother to produce good coding.
Bugs exist and they'll always will, what's wrong here is they need to be addressed by proper official channels, not 3rd party developers. They don't, even when new versions are released (ex: the 100% charged, power cord plugged in, draining battery comes to mind, etc)
Actually, don't think they ever do much from update to update. I keep seeing people complaining at forums from the same bugs they had before, so no real bugfixing is getting done.
And if they don't even fix bugs, i don't think optimization is happening either.
While we're at it, i'd like to see a proper website maintained by samsung with the official releases, updates and proper changelogs telling what they done.
I may be wrong but everytime there is a new official rom, came from someone who plugged kies and found it out or a leak/post on some obscure place, never from an official announcement.
I've stopped believing in samsung's software. Sadly, nothing much can be done except stop buying their stuff. But their hardware is still good and my options aren't that great: the iphone makes me feel like a retard that needs to be handfed, HTC's a next best, but don't really fancy HTC's sense (or hardware, they use physical buttons too much), LG is a plain "no way" (my SGS feels soother than any LG dualcore i've tried), motorola isn't even available here and nexus don't have an SD card slot for some odd reason (it's really convenient and was a dealbreaker for me with nexus S).
So i'll suck it up. My most sincere thank you to Cyanogen team (and every rom developers out there) for providing me with everything samsung never could. They're free, but to be honest, I'd gladly pay for a job well done.
I too have enormous respect for these cyanogen guys. I couldn't keep a GB rom on my phone for more than a day without FCs, reboots etc. when the phone rang I wanted to be able to talk to someone, not hear a deafening nothingness ... Or the ultimate wtf ... a phone that rebooted every second time I answered it.
CM7 is the biz. Thanks

And how many "smartphone" did you had before?
I had 2 WinMobile (6.5) before, both HTC, and the quality of either the OS and the phone doesn't even come close to the SGS...
also cm is not 100% working for i9000 - still some functions missing stil some errors
do not worry we will get the ics - most probably official kies releaase will be Q2/Q3 2012
so lets hope that it will leak fster like gb this year ;]

there are none - sorry maybe perform test when the media scanner stopst all of its scanning not during that or rigth after boot, or during
'tweaked rfs' presented with 2.3.5 performs basicly the same as ext4 on nexuss

gps was a problem from the launch day - nothing changed that was well know issue - still gps is enought for car navigation at least and depends on firmware version for sport tracking

never happened to me on stock odex or on odex with cfroot, jvt also fixed infamous Black Screen ff Death
fc/freeze is caused by custom kernels and crappy rom/theme
only well known FC is phone one - and it seems to be fixed by samsung in latest carier firmwares

Samsung should also allow and work with other developers to make roms for there phones because in the end all they want is to sell there hardware

The other guy suggested that Samsung should start working with developers. Well, they are. They're working with probably one of the most famous devs around here (at least last I heard).
Samsung has really messed up rom development.
Without xda this phone would be useless..
Also they are forgetting sgs 1 owners and can´t produce one working rom..
My next phone isn´t going to be Samsung or Htc.
I had 3Gs and i was pretty happy with it when it was on jb.
Let´s hope that Samsung do something about this problem and fast.
Two years is pretty long time to wait one working rom without bugs..

This is not but this must run android games. Not console games. If possible with cm7 why not with stock?
Well, I don't know if you guys are like me, but I DID paid cyanogenmod team...
Once they released 7.1 stable, I paid immediately.

Dear friend $omator i'm using Stock JVA, and all the issues i told you are true I've tried to liston some FM music with my Seinheiser phones and it sounds mono, or the bass is almost non existent , gps can barely be used for car navigation, this is not a gamming console but it has a 3d chip, what is it doing on my phone ?
They hired Cyanogen, but he is still in the cyanogenmod team. We will still get cyanogenmod for free.
By the way those problems doesn't bother, since I don't use firmwares from manufacturers anyway.
