So, I would appear to have done something nasty to my SGS. Right now I don't seem to be able to even turn it on. A few minutes back, it would turn on, but I would have a phone and PC seperated by --!-- on the screen.
I can get into 'download mode' though. I just don't seem to be able to flash anything to it...
It either gets to 'DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!' and then does absolutely nothing, or it goes about 10-15% on the Odin progress bar, the screen goes all one colour (red, grey, white) and the progress bar goes no further.
Do you think the on board memory has become corrupted?
I'm using Odin3 v1.0 with Pit512 and a whole variety of different firmwares. I was on JG5 with the redirect to a partition on the SD card for speed fix.
As I type this, finally I've managed to flash JM1 on, but as it boots, after the animation, the screen stays blank, with the two side buttons lit up.
Any ideas?
In the end I rebooted my PC, just kept trying and eventually one went through... how odd. Took 2 to 3 hours
All seems to be working now though, with speed fix too
Hey! I got sort of the same problem... Black screen with the side buttons lit up, after some flashing.
What firmware did work for you at last?
Ciao!
Erm, the last 2.1 firmware... JG2? All 3 components of it. (Code, CSC and Phone)

Hello everyone. After some researching, this seemed like the best site to answer my question, as I have not found an answer yet.
Yesterday morning, I was running my ATT 8525 (which I believe you refer to as "hermes") just fine. I was using the internet sharing feature, and went to reset the phone. I "believe" I pressed the power button while pressing the "ptt- push to talk" - button. The phone turned off, and when I turned the phone back on, rather than loading like it normally did, I got a new screen.
The screen has 4 color bars. A red bar at the top, then a green bar, then a blue bar, and last, a white bar of color on the bottom. Each bar takes up 1/4 of the screen and runs horizontally. At the top, the phone says, in white text:
HERM100
1PL-1.04
HERM100
SPL-2.03
At the bottom of the screen, in the white bar of color, in black text, it says
SERIAL
Now, when I press the power button to turn the phone off, nothing happens. I have to remove the battery to shut off the power. If I plug in a USB cable, the SERIAL text changes to USB. If I press the top two buttons, the one above window and the one above ok, while pressing the stick in to reset the phone, that screen works ok. I believe it is called a "hard reset" It asks if I want to erase all data and restore factory settings, and if so, press r. I press R on the keyboard, and the screen then says reset complete, press space. I press space and then I am back to the screen with 4 color bars. Nothing else I have tried works either. I have been stuck on this screen with 4 color bars since yesterday.
I took my cell phone in to ATT to be looked at and the sales people at the store say that I am 7 days past my warranty, and that they can't/won't repair the phone, but they would be happy to sell me a brand new one... for several hundred dollars.
So, the folks on the internet are my last hope =( If anyone reading this knows anything, even if it is a link to another site or something, that may help me resolve this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, I at least thank you for your time reading my post.

Oh, as an additional thought, if it helps, I have not used any of these :baked: roms or any such thing. I bought my phone and used it as is. The one and only change I ever did to my phone was I followed ATT's steps on upgrading from Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6, if I remember their names correctly. Hope this helps.
Bootloader. This is the name of the screen according to my research.
"Is your device able to boot Windows Mobile OS?
This one is easy: If can you see your today screen and use your phone as a PDA means you can boot OS. If you only see the splash screen, bootloader screen (tri-color) or windows mobile splash screen you can't boot OS."
Got this from the thread at
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Unbrick
So, I guess I am stuck at the bootloader screen.
Try a Hard reset - hold both soft keys and reset with stylus. Hold in until it asks to reset to factory (whatever). Press "r" on the slideout keyboard and then space. You should go back throught the setup PPC steps.
YOU WILL LOOSE ALL INFORMATION ON YOUR HERMES...This is unescapable as you would any other way you tried to recover your Hermes too.
I suggest if you get it working to install Hard SPL V7 (makes recovery easier) and also pim backup so you can restore all your contacts/messages if something goes wrong again.
Cheers... & good luck.
I have tried hard resetting many times, and it does not work. It says that it succeeds and that factory settings have been restored, and then I am back to the bootloader screen. I have been to the wiki on bricked hermes phones and recovering from a brick. From that, I ascertain I have a type 2 bricked phone (goes directly to bootloader screen). I tried the MTTY tool, and it says that the NAND write was successful on both commands, but, I am still stuck at bootloader screen. I have since tried installing a few different roms, even in SSLL and HARDSPL modes, and nothing has worked.
What I have not tried is the JPIN fix, as I am not an engineer and don't have the tools or knowledge on how to do that. I also don't know how to do the microsoft operating system download fix (using an emulator?)
** UPDATE **
I think it might have been the mtty commands, but I took the battery out overnight, and when I put the battery back in to try the KITL attempt, the phone booted up and started to do the config. I was happy and thought that the phone was fixed, but when it was done with the configurating the phone, it reset back into boot loader screen -_-
You may need to check for bad blocks. This sometimes causes the problems you descibe as well as spontaneous Hard Resets and occasional soft resets.
Do a search for "how to fix bad blocks hermes" and you should get the info you need...
Hope this helps...
I installed Euro firmware, on the second flash everything just stay'ed black, and I waited awhile till I decided to power off then power back on. First thing I saw was AT&T connect boot screen, then it went black but I can still hear Samsung's power up theme, also device has a Vertical Line running down the right side. I noticed that If I press power button twice Tab comes on, and everything looks great, so I rooted my device and installed Titanium Backup,Everything seems okay. So my question is how do I get rid of the AT&T Boot logo and to be able to see Samsung logo on boot?
\\\\\\\Exactly what happens on fresh boot/////
-fresh boot- AT&T Connected screen comes up, then screen goes black with the line on the right, then Samsung's power up theme song comes on buttons light up screen stays black line goes away, then screen still black, then to initialize the screen I press power button twice. Comes on and works fine.
****Would love to fix that part, I would be most greatfull for life! Willing to pass on info, to all who want more!****
*need help on pre-installed boot screen*

Install euro firmware with bootloaders. JJ4 is good one since it's bootloader is not signed. Then you can install newer euro firmware over it.
However, so far there is no known way to go back to AT&T bootloaders. So you ca't fully restore to AT&T if needed.

Thank you for your reply, I will think about it! Seem's I have to make a choice. But at least there is a way to fix the problem.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got a samsung vibrant Tmobile and after flashing a custom Rom
I got AT&T bootup screen! Any answer will be appreciate !
There is a thread for this titled "How to fix at&t black screen with thin white line at boot up". I know you can find it by searching - I wrote it.
I tried all the various methods to get into download mode but one of two things happened: Either it would display a battery charging icon (not filled at all) or it would just display the Samsung logo briefly and then it would disappear/reappear continuously.
I finally read this really obscure method which was to remove battery/sd/usb hold all 3 buttons, wait for the Samsung logo to appear once, and then quickly let go, jam the battery in and connect the usb.
I still didn't have the yellow download thing, but the Samsung logo stopped pulsing and it was recognized in odin. I tried to flash and unfortunately it hung. I popped out the battery and the download logo appeared. I shoved the battery back into the phone within half a second and it recognized it in odin again, and this time this was the result:

Just some encouragement for those that thought their phone was bricked. There is still hope!
PS: The way I got into this mess was using titanium backup's secure delete feature (deletes system apps). Just a warning that you might want to stay away from that.
Running the rom in my sig. Downloaded and installed Wikitude world browser from the marketplace, and now I've got the black screen of death. It won't go away even after a reboot. What can I do? I haven't backed up my android in a LONG time and I'm not prepared to lose everything!! Any way I could recover it?
could try using 'android commander' to uninstall the app via the pc?
Hello,
I have a similar problem.
In my case, its truly "permanent".
I haven't installed nothing special, nor did I do anything special that could've triggered this screen of death. I just had the app LiveRadio on for less than 1 hour.
I turned off the screen with the end button, and when I pushed it again, the back lights went on, but no image at all, just black!
I googled this poblem, and tried some solutions, like turning off/on the device, taking out the battery and so on, nothing worked!
The most bizarre thing though, is that the screen is permanently black! It's always black, be it in bootloader mode, spl, mgldr, or something else, no image is displayed.
I even tried to hardreset my android soft (I managed to do it somehow), but this didn't chase away the black screen.
The screen responds though. I managed to use androidscreencast to control the device via my PC, everything works normally, touching the screen triggers the desired commands, it's just pitch black...
Do you think my screen is broken in some way? Or maybe there is a problem inside the phone, a linking issue.
Does anyone have an idea? Thank you in advance.
what you could do, as you are using your pc for doing tasks on your phone, is perform taks 29.. then flash the windows mobile rom (trough sd and rename .nbh file to LEOIMG.nbh) this way your HSPL is deleted aswel.. and then what i would do, is send it back to repair.. because i think your screen has a problem.
I don't know if you are able to do all those steps as if you have to pull down the volum (or pull up?) to proceed the windows installation when going first into the 3colored screen.

Phone screen is black, but phone still "works".. Cannot get screen to come back on!
I have no idea what happened, 5 minutes after being in my pocket I pulled it out and the screen was un-responsive.
The notification light is still on, power light, etc. The power button works, I can push and hold and reboot and the two bottom buttons on the phone light up. I was able to "swipe" my password and it vibrated and accepted it, I am getting vibrate notifications too. I just have a black screen and I can't figure out what to do!
I am rooted, but I haven't had any changes to the phone in a few weeks since I had rooted. I tried using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395 but I cannot figure out how to get the device to show up in the program to use.
I am at a loss on what to do...
No Samsung logo if you remove the battery for 30 seconds, replace it and power on normally?

Nope, no nothing. No logos, no screen flicker, no colors of any sort - just black. The LED goes blue as it boots up, etc, so I know it does power up.. and once it is done I can even swipe my password and it gives the feedback vibrate..
Just in case this was an issue with the root and whatnot I flashed the stock with Odin and I still am getting black screened.
I contacted VZW support last night, and the chat rep told me they would have to just replace the phone. I am guessing this may be a hardware issue.
Yea if there is no logo whatsoever when you first turn it on, it sounds like a hardware issue, not a ROM issue
I forget exactly which logo shows first (S5 I think) that isn't part of the ROM afaik, the Samsung animated logo is the ROM, so if you don't even get the one before the Samsung animation, doesn't sound good
Is it the G900F? If yes, the only thing I can think that might possibly work, is this

Don't use unless it's the G900F

I don't believe it's G9000F... and I am fairly certain now that it isn't a software issue since everything else 'loads', just not my damn screen.. lol.
Thanks for your help though
The reason I posted that link, is, if the bootloader has corrupted, it is possible you won't get any logo at all, and that debrick image basically tricks the phone into using the MicroSD card to boot into download mode from, where you can recover the main storage
It should tell you under the battery which model S5 it is
If the screen doesn't even light up, then it sounds more like hardware
See if this gives you access

It is connector issue.
Either connector is slight loose or if not then need to Change the connector.
My one has same problem.
Solved for less than 10$.
