going to get a vibrant, but a few questions first - Vibrant General

im going to get a vibrant, but a few questions first
is the vibrant 16 GB or 8 GB?
i noticed the vibrant removed the front cam, but added in a 6 axus gyro for 3d games, so what i was wondering, if you install firmwares for the factory phone (JG5, JM2, ect) does it mess up some settings? like offer an option for the front cam, but then crashes, or something like that. and do 3d games actually exist yet?
is the gps any better than in the i9000? and is the read/write speed any different? actually i guess you could sum that up as 'is the hardware any different?'
anything else i should know about getting the vibrant? thanks alot for any answers anyone can give

Is your Google broken?

is the vibrant 16 GB or 8 GB?
16GB internal + 2GB MicroSDHC.
do 3d games actually exist yet?
3D games look absolutely amazing on this phone. I play Asphalt and Nova all day long.
anything else i should know about getting the vibrant? thanks alot for any answers anyone can give
Just get it. I've been using Android since day 1 and I love the Vibrant.

You can have a total of 48GB using a 32GB MicroSDHC.
I don't think anyone has come out with a custom firmware yet. But the stock firmware is very good already.

im sorry, im not sure i understand you correctly, i apoligize. are you saying you still are using the firmware that came with the phone? i am aware of a quite a few firmwares, and custom firmwares available for the Galaxy S. are you saying these do not work on the Vibrant?

Some people are reporting stability and connection issues with custom roms for the i9000 Galaxy S when used on the Vibrant. You should probably wait until there are roms built specifically against the Vibrant's kernel available before trying out custom roms.

i dont care about custom roms that much, just basic roms, JG1, JG3, JG5, JF1, JF3, JF5, JM1, JM2 any of these, will they work? im googleing but cant find anything, were supposed to leave to go pick ours up in a few minutes, i need to know before i go buy it

Few game pics. My G37 is not there but I'm OK to race the 370Z.

No. 14GB for storage. 2 GB for app downloads. That's 16GB total on the phone itself. And then the 2GB external SD card for good measure.

Almost 2GB of memory for apps is very nice. No APP2SD is needed.

Lexar's not bad.
I saw this, too. But if you're trying to save money check the Amazon link below.

A class 10 will always blow out a class 4 when performance is involved (manufacturer branding aside of course). I have had a 32gb c10 for about a year now and love it. Before I had a 16gb c6 which was way better than the garbage that phones come with as stock.
Here is a nice little app that I use from time to time to check my r/w speeds. Pretty accurate for an in-phone-sdcard speed reader. Best tests are done on PC but this one is close.
Class most certainly makes a difference. That said, 32GB cl 4 for $30 is also a great deal. I'd step up to Cl 10 for another $10 though.
Wow awesome price! Noobb question would the vibrant support it? If so im ordering it now

Yes. I am rocking a 32gb right now with about 200cds, 4 movies and a bunch of other stuff and only have 14gb used, plus that extra 9gb I have free on the internal.
Seriously with +/-16gb internal and a 32gb sdcard, that is almost 50gb of storage. Remember when PCs had 30gb hd drives and that was huge?
^ Another MAJOR reason why I am SO glad to have the Vibrant back. The GS4G only had a 1GB internal... wooptie doo for the next generation Vibrant.
I can recall my first mp3 player with 256MB space. Ouch.

How long it takes your phone to scan the card on booting/mounting?
I had a 16GB class 6 it worked fine on reading/writing, but everytime phone took long time on scanning, so switched back to 8GB class 6, much faster on scanning
Maybe 2 minutes max. With strategic .nomedia files it only scans what I want it too.

You cant get more ram than what the phone already has. If you want to clear out more memory, move your apps to the sd card, or flash a rom that has a smaller footprint.

two best options. have u removed bloat from those roms? ive run across some devs still bloat roms with other apps that i dont use or need. same with it being a sense rom some sense stuff can be deleted. in doing so some background services should be gone and free up ram. anywho my two cents
and what rom? most of team nocturnals threads are not very legible to me. i like simple op over flashy lol
and maybe just try a new rom? u'd be surprised
What about swap? When you partition your sd can't you use swap as an extension to ram incase it runs low when using apps that use a lot of RAM????
Edit: if your not on shooter nightly 1.0 I highly recommend you flash it Im on it and no memory problems

Swap with ICS?

Just wondering, is it better if I set up a swap now-a-days on ICS? I heard some rumors of swap fixing low mem. issues and reboots; mainly on TexasIce's thread. Also, is it ICS that is allowing our phone to use this swap if it does? Thanks for the help guys
We could have always used swap, but it wasn't really necessary for GB. ICS ran fine without swap for me so and I would rather not use it. Try it with and without and see what works best for you.
That's just the thing. I wanted to hear what others had to say because I did not want to have to go through the whole reformatting my SD for no true reason. I have over 20 gbs I would be having to transfer back over and I would have to deal with the slow SD transfer speeds of ICS. (And yes, I know it is a bit faster with 3rd party app or via recovery mounting).

I havn't tried the Multi Mount but how much of a pain is it to go to the recovery and mount from there, I have a class 10 SD and recovery mounting I can get about 15-20 mb\s, but while in rom i'm limited to probably 3-4, Ill have to try out multi mount though.
Okay cool, a violin. But this isn't about Multi Mount. A bit off topic now. I'll try it and report back my findings (swap, not the app).
I have repartition with swap, tried any ICS roms, but couldn't find any different with that of no swap. Need some wider explanations, too...

With texasice's ICS ROM, before he added his reboot-fix, almost everyone faced reboots because of out-of-memory errors. Now, however, there is little to no need of a swap partition.

After trying it out, I can +1 this now. ICS seems to work the same w/out swap, no performance increase. I just brought this topic up because it was mentioned and I wanted to test the myth to see if ICS actually worked fast/stable with a swap.
Conclusion: Myth / belief busted, swap will not increase performance / stability when running ICS. Thanks guys

Don't buy the Samsung Galaxy S III (yet) see my screen

This Software is still full of bugs.
The screen below (sry is dutch) shows a screenshot of my Galaxy SII and my Galaxy SIII.
Both run Android ICS
Both have about the same apps installed.
but my SII has 458 MB of free ram and my SIII only 89 MB free ram.
This causes a lot of crashes with the touchwizz.
For a phone costing more then a regular laptop I find this very disappointing.

Might be some of the apps are causing the phone to crash. How was the phone prior to you downloading those apps?
So you are saying not to buy a S3 yet because you are having issues with it? Sorry to hear you are having issues with yours but mine works great! I don't have any issues like you & maybe you should start researching on rooting & using custom ROMs.
Since you didn't specify if you are using a custom ROM or stock, I'm going to assume you are using stock. When I was running stock, I didn't have issues as you either.
Don't cry wolf!

I call complete BS on this whole topic. They are not running nearly the same kind of identical software and the SGS3 has ran great in my hands compared to my Skyrocket.
There are plenty of SGSII vs SGS3 videos and articles on the internet. Don't let this topic discourage you. Do your research.
On my homescreen I have Beautiful Clock widget, FOlder organizer, 5 folders full of apps, Google voice widget, Gmail widget, flip board, pulse, active apps widget, S Calendar widget, Music widget, Negative colors, assentive light, google search with a live wallpaper (Captain America).
I don't have any lag issues and I haven't noticed any reload issues. Maybe because I sold my Skyrocket and used my Captivate for a long time and the homescreen might be loading way too fast to even notice a reload, but from what I see I have experienced such problems.
Already a few topics on this and tips on how to make the most of the RAM you have.
LOL! Dont buy a pentium pc (yet). My 8086 is less buggy and more reliable. Same goes for my 1988 Ford Fiesta compared to the new new 3 series BM.
That image is showing that your Galaxy S III actually has less usable ram than the Galaxy S II.
I'm assuming your Galaxy S II has a custom kernel, with extra RAM tweaks and more ram allocated from somewhere, no?
Actually, I'd pretty much bet money that it does.
Want a clean comparison? Flash your SGSII to stock, and re-check your RAM
EDIT: Also the reason for the SGSIII having less free ram is because more apps are currently running. Whereas it's clear that your SGSII has less apps running.
... iv also read before that the more RAM being used, the better - better to have the RAM utilised than not with Android OS.
Well I get 2gb or ram.. can I still buy it? Lol

So yes, the s3 has its advantages.

Hey, windows got better at this with 7 and, I assume, 8. Microsoft seems to be embracing this ideal.
May I be so bold to suggest that you should not buy a house. It could burn down. They have not yet find a solution to build a house that is fire proof.
Also..do not stay inside a house. you could get killed from fumes, pollutants and worst, from the house falling on you!
What about the car you drive? You might get a bad tire, brakes not working, engine exploding, etc.
I guess and I hope you get my point! If not....you need help..and badly!

To those of you with the 16GB phone in hand, could you post a screenshot of the Storage screen? Androidcentral's review of the 32GB model says that the 32GB is partitioned into 12GB of "phone storage" (for apps) and 12GB of "internal sd". I was all set with getting the 32GB version, but this has now given me pause. Can it be re-partitioned to be one single large partition for apps? If not, I would just go for the 16GB version (assuming it has similar amount of space for apps) and spend the $50-saved on a 32GB MicroSD card.
Yea it is a buzz kill on 32g it saves 12 to USB storage and 12 to internal sd card im getting the 16 gb

I would think so. The guys in the Nook Tablet forum provided a way to repartition that thing from it's miniscule 1GB of user space.
12 + 12 = 24. Where is that last 8GB? O/S reserved space or something?

I think so too, but if it is, then the 16GB crowd will only have 8GB divided between apps and data (before adding a micro SDHC card), that blows.
Totally sucks on the 32gb version which I switched to and ended up waiting longer for. I do hope there is a way to repartition them to one.
This is where I'm at now. Just a few essential apps and a few pics. Haven't put me sd card in yet

Thanks tkemack! Seems like without re-partitioning, both 16GB-models and 32GB-models will run out of app space at the same time. That's assuming that Android Central really does have the 32GB version...

I was expecting the 32GB version to have 28GB (12GB+16GB) in a single partition. There's really no reason not to have exactly 16GB more than the 16GB-model. I guess we'll see next week when people get the 32GB-model in hand. Hopefully someone will post a screenshot in this thread.

I'm hoping the website is wrong as I see no point to partitioning it. Isn't the GNex on Sprint 32GB? Maybe someone who has one of those can shed some light on if theirs is partitioned.
is this something we errrrrrr (the devs) can change ?
This makes me glad I got the 16gb! I was having a hard time deciding, but I figured I could just throw in a 32gb sd card if I start to run out of space. I doubt I'll actually use 16gb just for apps.
