Did you guys know? (Vibrant Multitouch) - Vibrant General

So...........I did a few multitouch tests last night for ****s and giggles and on one test it sensed 5 contact points (I was like when i saw this BTW) and the other performed pretty well also the only way i could get the two contact points to get stuck together was when i slid one finger under the other.
so after having my Nexus and trying these tests which were a huge FAIL and giving up on my Game Emulators that i purchased back in my G1 days I decided to give it another go on my Vibrant and the only thing i have to say is HOLY ****!!! My GBA, SNES, SEGA, and NES emulators run INSANE, the multitouch is on par, and it only made me fall way more in love with my Vibrant

NICE!!! Thanks for sharing...very informative. I'm curious how the new iphone will stack up to these tests as well. hhmmm...

how easy is it to get those games going on the vibrant? slowly learning here =)

Yep. Part of the SAMOLED specs was a better touch panel. Nice to see it's as good as they claim!

I also notice that if you use the Samsung input method instead of Swype, you almost get a full multitouch keyboard.

Go to the market and download
NESOID (Nintendo)
SNESOID (Super Nintendo)
GENSOID (Sega Genesis)
GAMEBOID (Game Boy Advanced)
or anything by a developer called "yongzh"
he also has a Game Boy classic and a Game Gear emulator
then get RomBuddy on the market to get the games the GBA emulator needs a "BIOS" file to play it you can find it on RomBuddy or you can do it like I did and search the internet for hours and test out what games work and don't
keep in mind these are all payed apps and both the apps and the roms (games) are illegal to distribute so before you ask just in case NO i wont post up any APK's or ROM's and no the roms dont cost anything just the emulators and Rombuddy <---Easiest way to find the roms
Type in "yongzh" in your search bar on the market and he has some "lite" versions of his emulators so you can try it out before buying

yeah i use Better Keyboard and its runs really well on the phone also BTW its not quite yet multitouch yet but its pretty close, most keyboards claim to be but i dont think theres is one yet
another thing i tested were some of the piano apps on the market that poped up when i typed in "multitouch" in the search bar on the market and those all worked pretty well you could push two keys at a time but i kind of forgot to see if maybe more than two fingers would work?
I know the emulators were reacting to more than two fingers (not that you would want to fit more than two fingers on a 4" screen while playing a game )

Um, how good is rombuddy if I may ask? I understand that this stuff is illegal, but in the spirit of sharing, I would like to say that the website known as emuparadise is also good for roms. They have every GBA game ever, and a good selection of others I believe. Now sure how easy it is since you'd probably be downloading onto your computer and putting the rom files in the right folder, unless you can download to a certain folder on android, but it is free at least. People who are downloading illegal emulators and roms probably want to be as cheap as possible after all.

Im pretty sure the 5 contact points is not a thing with the Vibrant, the Nexus One just had a really bad touch sensor.

Multitouch on the Vibrant/GALAXY S series is excellent. I think most of us we're apprised to that. Just trying out pinch to zoom in the web browser and GPS maps shows how awesome the touch pad on this phone is. It's easily at the level of the iPhone.

what do you mean by "is not a thing with the vibrant"? and unless both my boys nexus and mine had a bad touch sensor I think you sir would be wrong. It was a hardware issue theres many many videos out on it, Im not bashing the Nexus because i loved mine but the Vibrants screen is better IMO
Download Multitouch Test by "Greenrobot" and if you tell me that you put 5 fingers on the screen (at the same time )and it pops up with five points then Ill call my friend up and tell him he has a defective Nexus

The Galaxy S is using one of the best touch sensor available, its made by a company call Atmel, the one being use in the Galaxy S supports unlimited touch.

No i was just getting at the nexus one had a flawed touch sensor to begin with. Others like the Droid X or the Incredible have touch screens similar to the Vibrant.

oh sorry i got all on the defensive, yeah i think the Evo is also on the list of good screens

I used to prefer the resistive screen of my Nokia n900 over any other capacitive screen. However, this phone has since changed my opinion of capacitive touch screens and on screen keyboards. A stylus would still be nice though

Actually, the Incredible (and the Evo/HD2) have the same crappy sensor as the N1 and the Desire.
Multi-touch on those Snapdragon phones is a hack job, the actual hardware used doesn't even support it directly. Every wonder why the Sony X10 doesn't support multi-touch at all? It's not because of Android 1.6, it's the hardware. It has the same touchscreen hardware as the HTC devices (and is probably co-designed/manufactured by HTC too), but they didn't try to make it work with a driver hack like HTC did.
The Milestone/Droid, which has an EXCELLENT sensor and used to be the best in the business until the Galaxy S came to town, only supports two inputs. Which, btw, is plenty, it'll be a rare rare application that can take advantage of multi-multi-touch.
Not sure what's on the Droid X, but I imagine the hardware will be at least as good as the Droid.

Would you know how many inputs the iphone4 can handle? Very curious...they use our cpu made by samsung along with other components, I wonder how similar our touch screen tech is....

is all this information fact? i really like HTC and i would hate to think that their screens couldn't get better by a small fix, so would you say that Samsungs screen is one of the best screens out and if not the best who would be its direct competitor or what place would you put Samsung in?

Nevermind I got it to work

IPhone fun apps .. Why its not on Diamond ?

Hello..
While im in Youtube i see the videos of the IPhone apps .. and i c how fun it is by just taping the screen ..
and here's what i thought .. IPhone apps is really simple its just the idea .. which makes me wonder why its not on the "Diamond" .. it cant be done ??
Here's some examples :
iAno

this app contain graphic photo of a piano buttons when u press it, it plays a tone .. is it hard to do it?!
you will tell me the diamond is not a multitouch screen.. its ok we dont want to play two tones at once .. we will tap every single button and play its tone..
just for fun it doesnt have to be the same as the diamond .. we only put what the Diamond can play or run ..
iGuitar
video:http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=w40P3q3PIu8
iGuitar is a simple app as same as iAno .. just tap on the string and play .. we dont want to hold a string and play a different tone in the same string like a real guitar .. its enough i think with 6 strings and play with them .. for fun and shows ..
iDrummer
video:http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=coiaPu371AA&feature=related
dont have to say much about it .. its the same .. only its very simple .. touch and play .. no need to multitouch..
---------------
and so on with many apps with the same subject .. please comment and tell me your opinions about what i wrote .. and explain to us whats can be done .. and what cant be done .. and why ..
waiting for this thread to explain everything...
if it's so simple, do it yourself.
there are plenty of apps similar to these outhere, and the reason they are not really developed for WM devices anymore compared to the iPhone is due to the vast amount of marketing the iPhone has.
htc sell for 1 million
iphone sell for 100million.
this is the different

i bought a touch pro, after having an spv m500, spv M700.
and after al this years the apps stil look the same (graphics)
but you don`t here me crying over it.
if you want iphone apps, get an iphone.
so please stop crying over the iphone apps.
no i do not hate an iphone, but i didn`t get the fuzz and the hype that followed over it.
and i certanly didn`t like the hype creating policy they applied.
meaning, the store`s had plenty in stock, but were only alowed to sell 3 or 5 iphones a day, for a few weeks.
in other words, creating a hype.

Just look at the hardware specs, of course it could be done but what we are saying is the market for such gimmicks is not wm it is apple. I got my phone for it's gps, it's vga screen it's gpu and cpu, not for a load of useless gimmick software that has no practical value. Basically anyone who wants to make such software has a much bigger commercial market with the iphone. I have seen maybe 1 or 2 adds for the diamond in magazines and that is it. The iphone is a nice object I'll admit but it is driven purely by the $ and not by a community of geeky nerds who love to tinker (myself excluded of course), software given to thousands or bought by millions. It is just fodder for the masses!
My last words on the subject, I'm sick and tired of this kind of crap thread, I recommend that no one else bother to post here, it has all been said a thousand times.
Out with the bores!
Oh give badrey a break! Some of you people are so deluded, it's hysterical. The iphone has some amazing apps and some of the key things it has that most the Diamond apps don't are style, sheer usability and a real sense of fun. Seriously, the Diamond apps can sometimes feel clunky and overly practical, however useful and well constructed they may be.
The saddest thing about all this bitterness towards the iphone and people who dare to mention the name is that there seem to be more and more posts/apps concerning Iphone themes, icons and slide to answer apps than ever before. So you all can't hate the iphone has much as you profess - stop with this childish pretense, it's sad!
Don't get me wrong, I love my Diamond, but I wish some of the extremely talented developers on here would raise the bar by utilising the Diamond's excellent screen and GPU for some good old fashioned colour filled fun. If it means using other successful phones as inspiration, so be it.
Whilst i'm getting things off my chest, to those of you with naked/ bikini clad girl wallpapers - nothing yells 'i'm a strange nerdy virgin' louder to people, especially women! Trust me, my gf heavily agrees and has often laughed at some of themes i've shown her on here, so sort it out. LOL!
Anyway, please take my post with a pinch of salt gentlemen.

Hear, Here......! Well said Old Chap.....
I think Badrey's inititial question was quite inocent and he was looking for a "gentle" debate - not an on-slaught..... lol
I'm a Die Hard win-mob user and will probably still be in many years to come... I still have that stock of Beta-Max video's too ready for when the market picks up... but.....
The iPhone does have some amazing "toys" in its app collection...... I want some of those too!

Oh, you are reading my mind, are you? Exactly what I been thinking! How do you do it?.... Scary!
people develope to get some money
with diamond you cant get much money when you develope something.
only few develope do for fun. like some in here. but this is all.
1 develope for diamond = 1million develope for iphone.
you can see the different. money
your question is very childish
Yes but i think you'll find that most Windows mobile phones that get released from now on will have the same G-sensor + touchscrenn technology so the apps/games wont just be for the Diamond they will be for all ppc.So how many people would be buying apps/games then.
If you catch my drift.
Keep in mind that while the diamond was only released 3 months ago, the iPhone has been out and played around with for almost 2 years. Most of those iPhone Apps started out as apps for the Jailbroken iPhone. Windows Mobile 7 is going to be the great equalizer.

This is supposed to be our equivalent of the iPhone's iAno application:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=392268
I think one of our issues is the lack of muti-touch, so such applications are impossible. (please don't tell me about a multi-touch keypad, I know - but it's not 'true' multi-touch, just divided into two separate capacitive sensing sections.)
The main issue is being stuck with Windows Mobile as an OS. The .net development platform is fine and the hardware may be great too. But as an OS, WM is sucky and doesn't allocate it's resources in the correct places.
Just look at the consistant responsiveness of the iPhone. In fact you don't need to get an iPhone to see this. The iPod touch is a fabulous piece of kit.
Personally, I think once Google's Android has proven itself and made it's way onto a few more devices than the G1 it will be another great platform for developers and users - regardless of whether those users continue to support the iPhone or not. Likewise Symbian may yet prove a worthy force in the PDA/smartphone market once it becomes touchscreen with series 60v5.
For those nay-sayers about the iPhone, I truly believe they just haven't had a real good play around with one recently. Once you have seriously tried it out, lived with one for a few hours, experience the App-Store, iTunes integration, Media Player, Huge screen, Safari Browser, Pinch to zoom, Multi-Touch, Google Maps, BBC iPlayer, etc it really does make one wonder how Windows Mob continues to sell ANY units!... Sure they have their own shortcomings but WM6.1 has many, many more.

Multi touch can enable some fun features, but other than being able to turn your phone into an instrument and zooming in and out, multitouch is essentially useless.

does the HTC EVO supports its own GRAPHICS CARD for smoothe 3d gameing?

jus wondering if the great EVO has its own GRAPHICS card for 3d gameing cuz i couldnt find any specs on it.if anyone knows that'll b nice.
The snapdragon has an integrated gpu.

This is a "GRAPHICS CARD" next to the HTC EVO. Bear in mind that these are actual size.

That will not fit inside your phone, which is why it doesn't have one. What it does have is an integrated GPU like Sebrina said, a smaller chip inside the Snapdragon that specializes in 3D graphics. The Droid also has an integrated GPU, not its "own separate graphics card." I have no idea where that rumor started or why it's still being repeated. People say words without knowing what they mean, I guess. It is true, however, that the GPU found in the Droid's chip performs a bit better than the one found in the Snapdragon. And now you know.

thanx for clearing that up but i just want a phone with a smoothe 3d graphics specially when it comes to games.i have the wm hd2 which is horrible on the games compare to the games and the graphics on the iphone 3g and 3gs which comes with very large sized game files.im jus hoping the EVO has a good GPU.THANX
I think the question is how well does Android play games (in general) and what quality/quantity are and will be available. Some games play well on the HD2, but, from my understanding (I'm a HD2 owner who doesn't game) it's only a few that really shine in Winmo 6.5(x).
same thing can be said for android, there's only a handful that I would consider to be "graphic intensive"
They're coming though, just takes times... my magic 8 ball says 6 months to a year from now we should see some really nice games start to pop up

The second post in this thread answered your question.
Graphics capabilities.
Since this kinda applies to the topic of this thread. I'm curious how much better this snapdragon processor will handle (in theory) the graphic intensive activities so many of us want like games and high quality video playback without lag compared to say the Iphone or in my instance a old Touch Pro.
Since I remember hearing HTC skimped on the video driver support with Qualcom chip in the touch Pro giving us some slide show video on certain file types like FLV files. I personally am curious if this graphics solution on this phone is going to give me that buttery smooth experience I think we all hope and dream for from this phone?

I beg your pardon: Theories are not facts, nor do theories reflect actuality in any form. The facts are clear: I do not particularly like the iphone, but it has nothing to do with how well they function. They are well known to be the best gaming phone due to the deep support of the for profit developing community. Free is good, but not as good as good.
Finally, OP, do some research. It's not rocket science and I think that's what has a few people ruffled....it would have been so much easier to have figured it out on your own than withstand the ridicule you've received and at least in part, deserved, in this thread.
My apologies, my theory had nothing to do with you or your like or dislike of anything. I was just wanting community opinion of this new processor. I am interested in processing capability not wither or not the games are good. But wither or not the hardware has the ability and drivers are capable. Also I am most curious if the drivers will support the various video and audio codecs to make this a true multimedia phone unlike the touch pro I currently have.
You seem like a really nice person and I apologize for coming off as not so much so. I don't think you can do much better than an iphone.....there I said it and I have tears in my eyes for saying so. I just don't like how Apple locks the application availability (although there are tons and good quality) and user interface.
I almost feel like an idiot for not just sucking it up and getting one.....Nah, I am an idiot!

just read this

Unfortunately, not all is peachy when wireless carriers and handset makers start messing with the stock Android experience. Reviews of the Fascinate by Slashgear and Engadget note that the phone uses Bing as its default search engine, not Google - probably more fallout from the cozy Bing-Verizon relationship. That wouldn't be so egregious if you could switch search widgets at will, but alas, the only way to remove Bing is by hacking the phone.
Verizon also swapped in its own Navigator app for Google's free navigation as the default for providing directions, but at least this can be changed in the phone's settings.

True...however i'm not worried. It has a better cpu/gpu/screen than any other android device on vzw right now. I will be rooting and using vanilla and loving it.

Ok, I've been wanting a Galaxy S variant for a long time now and of the versions available in the US I like the Fascinate the most (I am CERTAINLY wating for confrimation the GPS falw is fixable though before buying). However, this Bing **** is just too much. I don't want to have to root a phone that should aready be MINE, but it's looking like I will have no choice here. Problem is....I'm a super noob and have never rooted any phone ever and don't want to brick it.
So, I need to start reading. Can someone point me to what you think is a really good comprehensive overview of the methods and implications (warranty?, future updates?, reversion to stock os if rom is modded? etc. etc. etc.) involved in rooting a phone. The more exhaustive, detailed and authoritative the source, the better. Thx guise.

The current Galaxy S variants have a one click root application. You download it, run it, your phone is now rooted. Rooting it simply opens it to do whatever the hell you want. The norm is to find a stripped ROM (also known as vanilla aka plain) and run the phone at its maximum speeds with no frills or fancy eye candy widgets.
The other spectrum is, to root the phone and do what you want, paint the walls pink, add the latest moby song as your ring tones, install custom ROM's, it's up to you.
I'm not the least bit worried about Bing, even if google is locked out of the stock phone, it probably won't be very hard to fix. It's hard to deny the fact that outside of that issue, this is Verizon's best phone (obviously up for argument, but the screen, come on).

Actually the screen is the only think keeping me from this phone. I got a chance to play with one for awhile last night and compare it w/ my D2. The quality of text on the new SAMOLED display is not good. The best way to describe it is an old dot matrix printer. My eyes were actually fatigued from trying to focus and refocus on blurry text. The D2 on the other hand was quite sharp and very easy on the eyes.
Just something to be mindful of if you're one w/ sensitive eyes or don't like fuzzy text. Other than that, it feels very solid in the hand. And I experienced zero lag at any time. Even w/ touchwiz/bing, it made my D2 look like a go-bot.

What?
I have a droid 2, been using it for about 3 weeks. Have you actually seen an AMOLED screen before side by side next to the droid 2? Text is 1000000 times superior on the AMOLED. Images and movies even more. It even has a higher resolution even thought the AMOLED doesn't need higher res.

Yes, I've seen one. Yes, I've put the D2 side by side w/ my Zune HD, the Captivate, Vibrant, Epic, and Fascinate. Text on the (S)AMOLED's will never be as sharp as long as the current pentile matrix is being used. It's actually not even 800x400, but 653x392 because each pixel contains only 2 subpixels alternating b,g r,g vs a typical LCD w/ r,g,b r,g,b.
It's fast, responsive, and has inky blacks, but it doesn't do white, proper color, or sharp text. Side by side, text on the D2 IS sharper than any of the Galaxies.
It works for my Zune HD because I'm only watching movies or scrolling around tracks...in black menus. There's no reading going on there. For a phone you're going to do a lot of reading on, it's just not suitable.
IMO, the iPhone 4's display is the perfect match for a phone. It's very bright and extremely clear...like reading paper...from a laser, not a dot matrix like the Galaxy. It's just too small IMO.
I like my droid 2, but couldn't disagree more. The galaxy S is king of the screen quality and by a wide margin.
I think this droid2 has a good screen, but n o different than the EVO in my opinion.

Is it possible to put google navigator on this phone , or does one need to root . Don't want to pay $9.95/month for navigation
Yeah, this is getting out of hand. Check Phil's videos out over @ androidcentral. Some pretty nasty stuff. Even though you can get the google search widget, it reroutes through bing! Hitting the little magnifying glass pulls up bing, typing in the url box pulls up bing. And apparently gnav doesn't work...grain of salt there.
Yes, u can put google maps on there as i installed it yesterday when i played with it at the store, GMapps also comes with navigation, we are good guys

You what i noticed on this forum (fascinate)? A lot of people ready to bash the hell out of it. I see good things in all phones. Yes the droids have bootloader locks, but they have been bypassed. Yes Samsung has GPS issues, but its probably software since they all use the same hardware. Sure the HTC phones are slow, but HTC has been supporting their phones the best.
In XDA forums, which i have been a part of since 2004, a solution to your problems will always be found. To attempt to create panic here is pointless let alone try and do it before the product is even out.
Haha, thanks for the quick reality check. You know, I did have an incredible for a short time and wnet back through some older forum posts only ti find my reason for return did not have anything to do with the text being blurry. I wonder if I could just get used to that, and the overblown colors? I must admit, im very tempted to swap my D2 with the fascinate today. I would be stuck with it tho.

Thinking About Buying This or Iphone?

I'm Interested in this phone....but I'm just iffy on the Tech side of it. It looks Great! But I want a gaming phone that will last me for the 2 years i have on contract with it. I mean look at the Iphone...The 3gs has been around a long time and plays games that look great! On android phones thats not the case...
Back to this phone! The tech looks dated and games are only getting better..... I mean look at the dual core phones! 2 years from now i have a feeling this phone will end up like my rooted droid eris(BLOWS)...useless and slow when it comes to games. Why is that? When Iphone keeps quality games all the time...even years after its been out. I just adore this phone though...I love playstation and want to enrich in the experience of gaming on the mobile phone...I like carrying one device around that can do it all!
Is there hope for this thing? Any games coming out in the future that will make me go was up Iphone? What you got on this? Do you think games will still be hitting the market for this thing in 2 years time? Hell i know people who keep the Iphone 3gs even though they can upgrade!
So I mean really....Iphone 4 or Xperia Play? I'm looking towards Xperia Play but i dont want to regret later wishing i bought the Iphone 4. hmmmmm
Thanks for the help and sorry for my Brick of Text!
Listen, son, playing games properly and emulating your ROMs are the main reasons why you're buying this. Oh, and the ridiculously precise GPS. That's what this phone does best. The iPhone 4 will have more games, and they'll be more optimized for its specs (which are the same as the Xperia's, heads up!), but once you try the pad here, you'll wonder why you were even using a touch screen to play. It is just so much different.
The above post sums it up pretty good.
As said, the iphone 4 has the same specs. While the iPhone 4 may get more games, the fact is a lot of them use on screen controls, which suck SO harshly compared to buttons you never need to look at (or for). This on it's own makes it worlds better than the iphone.
Add in the open, totally customizable android platform, stereo very good for cell phone speakers, and a very nice, large screen, and you've got little reason to get the iphone.

Mate, plain and simple, there's so many threads about this on this forum it's ridicilious. I'll try and answer your questions, and hopefully you'll make your mind up.
1. If you want a gaming phone, this wins, no contest (I came from a 3GS)
2. Emulation with a proper dedicated controller is off the charts, when I talk to my mates who use the touchscreen to play fpse or whatever, they say it's unplayable, and from my phone, I've convinced a few people to trade in iPhones, Galaxy S's to get it. It's a beast of a phone.
3. You're right, in 2 years, it won't be what it is today, but it'll still be able to hold it's own. If you take care of it, and be smart about what your installing you should be ok. It's a new phone, and I'd say 2 years will be just about the right time to trade it in for the next Xperia Play
4. The reason the iphone 3GS STILL plays amazing games and the likes, whereas some Androids don't is simple...Android is moving forward at a much faster pace than the iPhone. The 3G -> 3GS was a big step, but not MASSIVE, the 3GS -> iPhone 4 was minute! When it comes down to it, you won't notice the difference between the 2. But in the last 2 years, the difference in Androids is ridiculous. HTC Desire -> Lg Optimpus 2x, Evo 3D, etc.
I came, as previously said, from an iPhone, and I don't look back at all.
Don't like the stock music player? Uninstall it, browser? Change it...you have so much freedom, it's completly up to you!

- If you want to play a load of emulator games, with buttons, this is the phone for you.
- If you want a great contract for a small price and this handset for free (yes if you shop around you can get it very cheap), then this is the phone for you.
- If you can put up with a few small minor flaws with the phone (although i havn't had any problems with it but some seem to) and do all of the above, this is the phone for you.
If you want to look cool with a group of isheep and pay for a large monthly contract, then the iphone is for you.

As everyone else has stated gaming with this is awesome. I am running all the emulators and have hardly played the pre-installed games. Once i finnish one game theres millions more to choose from
I cannot help but snigger now when i see people trying to play with emulators/most games on a touchscreen phone, feels good .
Even if this phone feels dated in 2 years. You will still be able to run all the emulators you've been running for that last 2 years so who cares lol. Plus fpse updates will only make fpse better and better. And once custom roms appear with processor overclocking the sky is the limit or atleast 1.6-1.8GHz which will play any game flawlessly i guess?

I know eh? I watched a video review for some gameloft fps (modern warfare 2 I think), and the dude was using a galaxy S. He was having SUCH a rough time on the first level, moving the player awkwardly about, getting hit more than hitting other people etc.
Funny thing is it's that's the reality for everyone attempting to play these types of games on strictly touch screen.

Hello guys
my first android was a Motorola Atrix, then a Atrix 2, now i have the samsung Galaxy S duos, but i saw the Xperia play with friend(for the first time) and i loved play with him.
i want to buy a new one, my Galaxy is more expensive than a Xperia play so i can "change" and doesnt waste nothing, but i want to know if it has problems or i can buy without hesitating.
so it have problems like... my earlyer Atrix have a fingerprint reader but with ICS it have issues...

Right now it's not a smart choice. Yes, its gamepad it's a gem to play anywhere but its official rom it's outdated and has some limitations about RAM and internal memory.
If you want to sort these limitations you will have to take some time installing a custom rom and tuning the configuration so, imho, if you don't mind about try some custom roms and you can find it cheap then go ahead, otherwise look for a more logical choice.
Since there is absolutely, positively not a single Bluetooth gamepad on this planet with as much software support as Xperia Play has, it's still the best choice for gamers.
There's a lotta better specs out there, but with so little necessitating all that power, their best use is for... well... **** measuring. Xperia Play handles things just fine with what it has regardless of whether it's old or new. Doesn't legally get 4.x.x, but since this is not iOS, we have many app supplements that net us 4.x.x features...and we get that extraordinary stability/software support that was compromised by newer FWs.
Honestly, I don't know the first thing about tweaks, yet my YouTube is constantly blown up with questions about what I do to make my Xperia Play so smooth. All I've ever been doing is running a debloated stock ROM to get iPhone-tier fluidity...and with link2sd, the onboard storage complaint even becomes invalid.
Only thing I wouldn't recommend is using a contract upgrade on a phone that's so low-cost... and that's just 'cause there's more strategic ways to work the system.
The Xperia Play is; however, still a good phone.
Sent from my R800a using xda app-developers app
tbh, if you can put up with a few fps drops here and there on heavy 3d games (e.g. modern combat, wild blood, dark knight rises, gta etc) and also play them at low settings then its a good gaming phone. Yes the hardware is outdated but if you get a custom ROM and then overclock your phone then it should be alright.
Honestly the phone feel fairly smooth using stock or NXT rom. If you use a light rom or debloat it, it feel smooth overall. It only slow down once you install custom ICS or JB roms.
The one thing I miss is can't do is play high bitrates HD movies like newer phones. Also having to stay on GB you get the speed, but miss out ICS features and apps that aren't compatible with GB.

Not to be a **** or anything, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that one. The MOGA in my opinion is starting to gain a ton of support from developers and the hardware itself works very well. When you couple this with the MOGA universal IME app, it gains all the capabilities of the ps3 controller. I love my Play, but I will take my GSIII and MOGA over the Play when playing Dead Trigger any day.

I disagree with that. We were sent a couple of MOGA's to use/review with are Xperia S, T and V but find for portable gaming it just does not work as good as you would want.
To start with the connection takes along time to kick in and then disconnects time to time during game play (Normally with Gameloft games). Having the MOGA app always running in the background gives the system more to process which cause's lag in games, they also seam to have a mined of their own (Keep moving in the same direction after you let go and are very inaccurate overall). The controller is not supported as a generic HID device meaning you need a 3rd party app and root to be able to play emulators and Non MOGA support games.
The other issues are to do with the physical form. The weight when the controller holds a phone is unevenly distributed (The phone weights a lot more then the controller meaning its top heavy (Not great for long periods of gaming), that's why there is a lip on the back of the controller to prop it all up. The sticks are stiff with no grip (Easy grip fix, take the foam pads out so they cup round your finger) and are useless for any FPS (Try out online multiplayer MC4, Nova 3). The lack of buttons (No d-pad, No L2, R2) and plus the fact you need AAA battery's to power it (Not ideal).
I could go on and on but Moga is no competition for the Xperia Play (purpose built for gaming, not an add-on) . If on public transport and want to play a quick game, its much better to slide the play open and play compared to getting the MOGA out of your bag or pocket, turn on bluetooth, clip in phone, wait for moga to connect to device and so on.
The list of games are on the increase but still only around 40 compared to the 400 on the Xperia Play. Its a novel way to play games at the moment and that's why some game developers are supporting it. But cant see this being a long time thing.
IMO ps3 pad with gameklip is the best setup maybe not so portable but for actually gaming its better than the xperia play

Wow, I honestly think that you both got a bad unit and haven't spent much time with it since launch.
First of all, in regards to the game selection, its true if you only use the company provided Pivot app, it only supports around 50 games. But what you are forgetting/ignoring is the MOGA universal driver app that makes it work as a standard HID controller just like the ps3 that allows it to play ANY game that works with HID contollers plus act as an ime that can emulate PLAY controls. There is not a single Play game that I cannot play without controls on my SGS III. Not a single one. This includes emulators. I can even use gamekeyboard if I wanted. I like my play too, but you are just ignoring the facts here.
Second, the connection honestly takes around 2-3 seconds for me and I have NEVER had a disconnect, not once. I have run quadrant with the pivot app and without and have seen no noticable difference, and it is the same with gameplay. I have one of the heaviest devices available and it does not seem top heavy at all. I think the comment people make about the sticks being stick is due to the fact that it is a smaller controller than normal so of course the sticks would have less travel area, it is just a matter of getting used to it just like it was with the Play touchpads. I have played several FPS's with the pad, MC4, Dead Trigger, Shadowgun, ETC, and have actually been impressed at the sensitivity and ease of use.
The argument that it is a pain to carry around is I think a weak one as it easily fits into any coat pocket and is smaller than some android phones Ive owned. I have used it daily for weeks now.
Again, I can play every Play game out there, so I feel like I my gaming experience just got way better. I also got a laugh of you calling it a novelty that wont catch on, thats what they said about the Play too.
Anyways, just a few thoughts, no offense meant my friend.

Agreed, ever since the MOGA got ps3 controller capability, I was in heaven.

I actually got my father a MOGA to go along with the EVO 3D I got him... and I'd actually even agree that it's support is far above and beyond the rest of those BT controllers... and I hope to see it get even more support because I'll likely get one for myself come January when my upgrade is available... but at the time being, not even the universal IME app brings it anywhere near being even a fourth of what the Xperia Play is.
From personal experience, I can vouch for the statement that it does greatly expand what it can be done outside of the pivot app, but it doesn't have all the specialized support Xperia Play has from having hardware menu navigation and all the precision of games tweaked to work especially with it's hardware, which results in cases like a *generic-converted* Eternal Legacy requiring an incredibly awkward form of still having to mostly use the touch-screen. While I didn't particularly find it as uncomfortable as poo-tang, the clip didn't really seem like it was designed to accomodate any kind of phone that has decent protection... meaning that my father was put in an awkward position where he'd either lose the convenience of his MOGA clip, or lose the protection of his EVO's ballistic case... this is particularly frustrating because I can use all the high-end protection that I want without sacrificing. Then the actual pivot app itself and the games involved don't seem entirely foolproof without all the tweaking options Xperia Play's given... NOVA 3, for example, has more natural feeling aiming... and all that aside, it's missing a major method of locomotion control by lacking that d-pad (which is a huge deal for precise input in 2D games). On a lesser note, I was quite shocked to find that it uses AAA batteries as opposed to having a rechargeable lithium like iControlPad does.
I do like the MOGA a lot more than other solutions because - honestly - even with all the minuses, there's still no other option on the market that allows well-done controls outside of just emulating tons of old content. Any cheap piece of plastic can emulate nowadays but the Xperia Play brought something truly special where we could play present-gen games like Wild Blood with physical controls, and the MOGA's actually picking up a lot of support for that audience with striking momentum. For that I give the MOGA credit above the iControlPad, Gametel, 60Beat, Red Samurai, Nyko Playpad and all others... but it's got a looooooong way to go before it's up there with Xperia Play... and with the ever-lasting hardware limitation (plus the burden of pairing per every game session), it may not even be possible that the MOGA can ever be up there with Xperia Play.
I will definitely agree that the lack of a true dpad is a disadvantage. There is a larger edition coming out later that has one built in, but its bigger which is both good and bad, but at least theres a choice I guess.
One thing that has actually made it not bad at all for me is the analog stick is very sensitive so as soon as there is any movement at all to either the left or right axis it registers immediately, something Metal Slug on my phone can attest to. I am not just saying this, platformers have not been an issue at all. What kind of case does your father use? I am using the shell/holster combo case and have not had it have problems.
I have never been a fan of shooters on the play, touch pad was always a frustrating experience at best and a nightmare at worse, at least for fps's. Twin Stick shooter kick ass on the play.
You mention a "everlasting hardware limitation" could you elaborate? Wouldn't the same apply to any game console, even the play? In other words, you can't upgrade hardware with an ota, which I know you know Im just illustrating my point.
Pushing the power button and then opening the pivot/universal ime app is a bit less seamless than sliding out the gamepad but I don't think it takes away from the experience. I have the whole process down to about 5 seconds before I pick my game.
