Hey all. I am new to the android stuff (had winmo since pocket pc) and while im not new to loading ROMs, I have no clue what all is happening when i do it to my Sprint Hero. Had a Wizard since release and everything was super easy; cooking, etc was not a prob. even my GPS is windows based.... and hacked.
Ok, so, my problem.
Received my work phone @ 1.6, upgraded instantly to 2.1; for a while, it was good.... then i got bored.
Rooted it this morning, found out that I have to downgrade to 1.6.xxx.x.x.x.x5 (whatever, you know what I mean). did the downgrade via a sprint RUU. worked fine, continued the process...
Got to where i made a nandroid backup and decided to try a custom ROM; fail.
I have tried Choc eclair, froyd, and damage control... each to no avail. I load it, says installed.... reset and get stuck at the HTC screen. I've done wipes and everything else i can find online to get it working again.... nothing. i boot back into the loader, choose nandroid restore, boom, back up and running. (BTW, nandroid is the best!)
Is there something I'm missing???
Thanks guys
Paul
heh, just saw my signature..... from a long time ago... lol

Ok my mogul went dead before I could get it plugged in, so I plugged it up come back later to cut it on and it goes to the plain HTC screen and hangs... I tried a hard reset same thing, tried putting the latest DCD rom back on it and same thing.. Can someone help me... the only thing it seems to be able to do is go into the BL mode and the hardreset mode.
FYI.. Mogul has been running for a week or more since the unlock. And I was so pleased with the new proformance. Thanks for the help.
I had the same thing happen to me this morning... and I just barely installed the sprint 2.17 ROM, and it seems to be booting just fine. You could try that. Thing is, though, I'd expect DCD's rom to work just the same way, so I don't know for sure what to tell you. I've got the custom BL installed, and I've been running DCDs ROM. I just decided to switch back right now because A. I'm not at home and only had time to download one ROM, didn't want to risk needing to do it twice, and B. I wanted to compare which is really better and decide why.
The coolness factor on using a custom rom is, of course, good... ;-) but I want to see what the full differences are.
Anyway, I'd try that if DCDs rom isn't fixing it for you, because when I reflashed it it came right up.

Have you tried removing the battery for a few minutes.
I assume he tried that... I sure did. Update, however... the phone worked fine all day until I had to turn it completely off, and so I just pulled the battery; same problem recurred.
maybe I need to restore the original bootloader? dunno.
Well, I'm tring to load the stock 2.17 rom back on... Took it to the store they looked at it put it in bl mode and handed back and said it was my problem since I modded it. Guess I'm going to short it out so that insurance will cover it.
UPDATE : Ok so the 2.17 rom did allow to boot back up to a normal state, so maybe there is a problem that if the phone goes dead on the custom rom that dosn't allow it to recover, kinda wierd.
Thanks for the help, I was really pissed about sprint not replacing it. (HEHE, guess thats what goes with customizing your phone)
I've got mine back up and running DCD's latest 2.1.0 and it's great.
you can put everything back so that sprint doesn't know you did anything, so I wouldn't worry too much on that score. Other than that one time, I haven't had an ounce of trouble with it. don't let this turn you sour to custom roms, you'll miss out on some cool stuff... gps, for example.
doesn't boot
please help, i folowed the instructions from this website: http://www.phonenews.com/how-to-add-gps-to-htc-mogul-xv6800-p4000-titan-2663/
i opened up Hard-SPL-240-MFG.exe i got the 3 color screen and then i could'nt get active sync to work finnaly after a few reset and even a hard reset i got the 3 color screen to go away but now phone won't boot, the phone gets stuck by the htc screen can any help me in detail how to get the hone to reboot, when i reboot it displays that it has 3.27 and the 2.17, thanks in advance
that radio and rom version are incompatible with each other.
I've been reading these forums for quite some time folowing H's and JF's builds and just seeing what the devolping community has been up to.
I've been wanting to root my g1 for some time but didnt ever make the jump till now. I read through the Helpful Thread / Build Round up started with in the beginning there was root as well as the How-to- Root, Hack, and Flashing your G1/Dream and decided i could do it. i followed all of hte steps with ease. had my phone rooted within 20 minutes the first thing i wanted to do was to get a new rom with cupcake but i also wanted to be sure not to mess it up so i read through nandroid and was a bit confused as to what all was needed so i figured the recovery img that the tutorial gave was fine since everything i had done was no problem. i then went to H's ion thread and saw that i needed a differen spl so i went and read about those and decided with hardspl got that applied no problem. i downloaded the ion rom renamed it to update.zip put it on my card and loaded up recovery mode pressed alt+s to apply it and everything went fine till it hung at the 2nd boot screen. a little disheartened i went into the spl using camera+power and flashed the recovery img. i read around the forums seeing if i did anything wrong and couldnt figure it out so i tried a different rom this time one of Jf's early roms i think it was rc33 i tried to apply that but i got a no signature verication failed at the recovery screen so i tried some others. JF's 1.51 and same problem. i read around some more and thought maybe it was because i didnt do alt+W so i tried that with JF's roms and both of the leaked hero roms (i know hero is extremely unstable but i just wanted to see if something entirely differnt would work.) by this time i go into the spl again and saw that the hard spl wasnt loaded any more (i guess the recovery img changes that) i reloaded the recovery img once more and tried to install a the 2nd Ion rom with H's root apps and still the same problem.
i really try to read and search before posting but after 4 hours of nothing i really just want some help. if someone could help me get a working rom on my phone preferably H's new Ion rom and tell me what im doing wrong i'd be endlessly great full.
Im guessing what happend was you did the switch of releasekeys to testkeys and then later redid the DREAIMG.nbh. If so you need to redo the steps involving testkeys. This is why it gives the no signature verification error.
In fact id suggest redoing the whole root process again. starting with the DREAIMG.nbh.
Hi im really sorry if this may have been covered countless times but as the phone is still relatively new I have posted to limit the chances of applying an incorrect rom.
I've had my Magic for a couple of months now and recently decided to root the phone, (its a Vodafone UK HTC Magic - PVT32B) and i followed the instructions to root via androidandme with the 1clickroot program to cyanogens 4.1 rom. its all going fine for now however in going through the steps it appears i did NOT back up the original rom for the magic- i backed up my recovery image but not the actual rom image. I've seen some sites suggest downloading the DREAIMG file or something similar however this relates to the G1 - to which even if it did work it would brand my phone as a Tmobile handset just like it is now with cyanogens ROM.
was wondering If anyone had a clean Vodafone UK rom (wiped/cleaned so no user data is present) prob from a nandroid backup or something - i do have Cyanongens 1.4 recovery image installed. Sorry to be picky but i dont want to risk bricking and would like to go back to the stock rom or at least have it inthe event i wanted togo back- these Tmobile ones come bundled with apps i /cant/ use and waste space such as the built in IM app or cyanogens amazon.com app which is useless in the UK.
i thank you in advance for any help you may give and apologise again if this has been covered < 9000 times already
I have a different phone can't help much, but I will suggest something but while you're looking for a stock ROM, I'd recomend doing a nandroid backup of your phone as it is now (if you have it up and running 100%), because if there is a problem in future at least you could go back to that.
Well, thats the brilliance of android, you can back up your phone often, we should all do it
I lost my stock backup, but have happily stuck with cyanogen since though. I'm sure someone here will have a nandroid of their blank phone. In between changing ROMs, someone could load their old backup, factory reset, nandroid that again, then go on to their new roms.
We really need a good list of download links of stock ROMs up somewhere, this would help devs sort out some issues too I'd imagine.
thanks for the reply, i couldnt agree with you more, i am quite happy with cyanogen now, particulary as ive found more use withthe phone now its rooted however we realy need a consistent storage of default roms and a central area for ROM creators to submit thier versions whilst having stock roms available for those who want to to back.
im guessing this may be a more common thing since the 1click root came along, guess it started people rooting who really shouldnt be (not excluding myself from that list) but i imagine bricked phones-a-plenty.
thanks again for the help. i may as well make a backup as u say whilst its working- least before it all goes tits-up
I have run into a strange problem. I have spent the last 2 days trying to flash the Fresh Rom back onto my phone. I had some problems while trying to do Apps to SD. Flashed back to stock, Updated and rerooted. I can restore all backups of the original sprint ROM. Every time I flash Fresh 1.0 or restore one of my nandroid backups for Fresh it will get stuck in a boot loop. I have searched everywhere and tried every possible option and can not get this Rom back on the phone. Anyone have any ideas?
first off, do you have a modded Recovery Menu? Because you need one, it is in the forums, i believe it is stickyed, but if its not search for it.
second, did you download the right ROM for YOUR phone?
Third, is the download a good download? it is possible it is corrupt.
put ALL these into consideration.
That what I was gonna ask gotta make sure you're rooted for flashing first! Good luck and let us know if you have any questions...if the directions for rooting viat the Android SDK are too confusing for you like they were for me search the forum for the "flashrec" way of rooting your phone so easy a caveman can do it!
Also be sure to get the base 1.29 RUU just to have if you need to default to stock and I found with my Sprint Hero model that recovey image 1.5.2 works best for back up and restoring 1.2.3 didn't work at all for me hence the need to run the base RUU anytime I tried to restore lol.
Yes I did all of that. I had it flashed with the fresh Rom before. Used the same files that where on my card even redownloaded. No go.
Hi all, thanks in advance for any help and my apologies if this exact problem has already been resolved. I searched through this forum and found issues *similar* to my problem but nothing exact enough for me to find a solution.
My experience with Android is limited but have quite a bit of terminal UNIX experience...so I'm not a total noob and I can follow directions pretty well.
I purchased a MT3G from someone and everything seemed to be in order when I checked it out (and the price was good, so I figured I didn't have much to lose). He was running Cyanogen Mod on there but of course I wanted to restore to factory settings and build it up from scratch on my own. Thinking that I knew what I was doing, I booted into Recovery (Home/End key simultaneously) with no issues and ran the factory reset utility, thinking that this would just drop the phone back to factory settings and I could re-root it from there. When I turn the phone back on, it just hangs at the "splash" screen and runs the animation over and over again.
I can still boot into Recovery and I can get into Fast Boot so I hope I am not bricked.
Here is the output I get from Fast Boot (attached file).
I tried to restore with a SAPPIMG.zip that I found but it said wrong device...
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

If you get an error, you need to download an engineering spl, and then try. (Engineering 2010 SPL)
The link and instructions are around somewhere on XDA.
Thanks for the help!
Unfortunately I already tried that and it didn't work, so I guess I'll install the Engineering SPL when I get home.
Shouldn't I in theory just be able to flash another ROM over this one and have everything be back to normal?

Yes sir, that is the easy way!
there are plenty of 1.6, and 2.2 roms out there.
Just download to sdcard, boot into recovery, wipe and flash
Don't flash any SPLs. Your fine as long as you've got a custom recovery. Just flash another ROM from there and make sure you wipe data, dalvik-cache, and cache before flashing. I've been running CyanogenMod 5.0.8 since the summer (CM6 ran like crap) and I've been happy with it so far.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Unfortunately I already flashed a different SPL and then un-rooted my device!
It works great, but now in order to get 2.2, I have to root it again which is a royal pain because I don't have a microSD reader and based on my research, the only way to root it it to make a goldcard!
Doh well! Learn something new everyday!

Not true you can root using the this app then use rom manager to install clockwork mod recovery. This is how I helped my friend root his device.
attached is the app
