How do you know if your phone is using WiFi or 3g when both WiFi and 3g is on? Is there a way to tell the phone to just use WiFi when connected to an access point? Does it count towards your data plan?

Not really sure, but...
Whenever I'm in my house on wifi, it puts a checkmark under the 3G symbol. I think this is to say that there is 3G if needed but it's not using it.
So i'd look for the checkmark. Wifi will not count toward your data, as it is not over the carriers network.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe if you are on wifi it will default to using wifi automatically. You should see the icon under "3G" change to a check mark instead of the up/down traffic arrows.
Thanks, I do see the checkmark. I don't recall seeing the symbol in the "getting started" guide. This is my first android phone and I'm really impressed with how easy it is to use but how robust it is. Lots to learn.

I just noticed a potential issue. When I enable Wifi, it appears to disable 3G.
The 3G symbol disappears. Is it possible to have Wifi and 3G on at the same time?
How is that an issue? Every android phone I've owned (G1, MT3G, N1, Droid, Incredible, Vibrant) does exactly what you're talking about when you turn on WiFi. If you're on wifi, you dont need 3G.
... and I believe this option is set by default; if you are on WiFi and the screen goes to sleep the WiFi will be disconnected and the cellular data re-enabled.
If you're concerned about making phone calls, don't be. You still get phone reception just as if you weren't on the wifi. If you want 2 data streams, that's not gonna work, though I have no idea why you would need that.
I've switched from wifi to 3g and back to wifi again while on hold in a call and sending emails and browsing. This phone is awesome. Off topic, sorry

When using the Wireless Tether, Barnacle, and even the Verizon Tether/Easy Switch hack, the data connection just stops and turns itself off. Losing the 3G connection. Why is this happening? I can forget about trying to use a torrent program because that kills the 3G connection immediately. It seems to happen more when the battery is less than 70%. On my old TP2 the HTC Wifi router worked almost flawlessly. It also happens sometimes when using Pandora after a song is done the 3G is gone and I have to turn the screen on to get the connection back. Anyone know what's happening? Is Verizon limiting my data because I use more than average? Is there a way to mask it like the TP2?
Does it always turn off when your screen goes off?

Not always, but it has more of a chance when the screen is off. Like right now I'm keeping the screen on and it's struggling to keep the 3G on. I'm pretty sure it's not because of my power settings either.
I am a newbe but loss of 3g is a known bug they are supposed to be correcting. Don't know if this helps
THIS DRIVES ME NUTZ!!! glad its not only me.
Yeah. I don't even bother with wifi any more. Same exact problem as you guys. I just use easy tether. Hate having to plug in but at least I get a connection.

Okay, this is a long shot. I'm talking about me standing in California, firing a BB gun up in the air and hoping it hits you in New York kind of long shot, but the my sister (on a Samsung Vibrant - 2.1) kept losing her connection when on Barnacle Tether until she set her Wifi sleep policy to Never.
Again, a LOOONNNNNG shot but hell if you're desperate enough maybe it'd be worth it?
Ehh I think the BB missed me in Boston The problem happens the most when flooding the connection with data requests. If I am using the connection for light web surfing it's ok even with the screen off. For instance a torrent program being open, or having multiple tabs open on a browser. Why can a crappy WM phone keep up the workload but the all-powerful Android can't?
Bro and sis, is there a way to make sure whether i am connected via wifi or 3g? Cuz my 3g dataplan is not unlimited.
Thanks.
Hold the power button down until the device option screen pops up, the same screen that turns it off. You'll see a Data network mode. Select that so that it shows Data network mode deactivated. Now 3g is off for sure.

you can also use widget or personally go to setting to turn off 3g
but somehow, every time my wifi is on, 3g is automatically off
u wont see the symbol on notification bar anymore
thanks bros, nice method.
I've had issues with wifi randomly dropping. Some times I wont notice and the 3g handles my traffic even though I don't want it to due to only getting the 1gb plan. With fully deactivating the 3g data I know when I drop my wifi and am ensured that I've turned my tab into a wifi only device.

The tab uses wifi first when available, and puts the cellular modem to sleep.
Hi all,
My phone's wifi keeps changing the AP to another one that I have connected, these two APs are all in my room, so the signal strength is same. How could I prevent that? I need the access point I deserved, not itself change to another I previously connected.
Thanks!

Not sure what you mean exactly as you seem to have be missing words(or using the wrong word) in your sentences, but I think that you should go to wifi settings, click the one you don't want it to connect to anymore, and hit Forget.
Press on the SSID you don't want and press forget. Keep the one you want connected.
almost the same problem, but in my situation is 2.4/5G band from same AP i want to use 5G but the phone always jump to 2.4G one after some time.

I have a similar question. I have both my university's wi-fi and home wi-fi stored to my phone's memory. The university wi-fi shows still a signal on my flat occassionally and my phone connects to it automatically. Is there a way (without third party app) to tell my phone that I prefer using my home wifi over my university wifi?

An interesting read.
Maomao you can set that to the one you want. In WiFi settings, menu then advanced.

Hi,
I got the Samsung i9500. Yah, the one that made me decide to go with HTC in the future....but that's another post.
In the connection settings there is a check-box that is greyed out that I cannot change. I forget what it says exactly and my phone is outside in my truck (OMW to work). However, it goes something like this: "Disable the weaker network and reconnect to the more expensive mobile data connection."
(no matter what the owner of the phone wants - you go ahead and connect to that network that's gonna cost a fortune while the free home WiFi network which is working just fine and getting fast speeds for a wifi goes unused because hey, lets face it, no one makes money that way....)
It's bad, I mean really bad. I connect at 5G speeds to my wifi. I get fast speeds from it. Why is Samsung making my phone disconnect from my wifi, then connect to my data connection which I have to pay for? WTF are they thinking that this is a convenience? For who!!??!! The phone companies?
I just want my phone to STAY connected to my wifi and NOT automatically switch to my hardly, barely not at all faster mobile data connection.
I'll get a screen shot up soon as I get home from work.
Thanks.
John
P.S-I've edited my post. Apologies-I was extremely angry. Although, anything I said still stands, I just don't see the point of leaving it here.
