According to this man, we now have root on the Droid X
Update, information to be posted here

This is Fantastic news to wake up 2. Thanks for sharing.
Freakin awesome - has anyone tried it yet?
Yea,
It seems to work.
I've removed CityID, Blockbuster, and Skype in adb after the install.
I'd love to try it but I'm not able to get the ADBDriver_v3_Google.zip attachment you supposedly need to do it.

This is what I used, I'm sure a moderator will remove it if this shouldn't be posted, and if so, sorry.
Wow - this works!!!
Got Wifi Tether working like a champ.
Cannot make the following work. Do we need to make it work?
1) Dial ##778, SEND
2) EPST dialog comes up. Select 'Edit Mode'. Enter SPC (000000), hit OK.
3) Scroll to down to 'Security', select it. Change 'S.IP DUN User name' to [email protected] (from [email protected])
4) Hit back arrow to go back and go/select 'M.IP Default Profile'. Change 'DUN NAI' to [email protected] (from [email protected])
5) Hit menu button, and 'Commit Modifications', phone will save changes and reboot.

Do you just need to install the apk?
Never rooted before so wasn't sure if it was that simple.
Thanks
Edit: Never mind, over at the other site ans see the directions.

Are you sure Verizon isn't going to charge for WiFi tethering just because it's rooted?
Anyone figure out how to remove the amazon mp3 app? I deleted it from the system/app folder but it's still showing up, perhaps what I deleted was just an update?
Is there any possibility that this can be blocked with another OTA update?

I forgot the name, but it is obvious in the ls listing, so replace <blockbuster> with the actual name from the ls command
adb shell
su
cd /system/app
ls <find the blockbuster.apk >
rm -r <blockbuster>.apk
Then I went into menu->settings->Applications->Manage Applications
Selected the blockbuster app, and deleted it.

Actually, rooting voids your Verizon Service Contract as well as your Motorola warranty (you're "modifying" the device), technically speaking.
If you're on Verizon month-to-month, I would guess you're also violating the terms of service for that as well (though I'm not certain on this one).
Of course, I assume there's no reasonable way for them to actually tell if your device is rooted (remotely), and if you unroot and factory reset, no way for them to tell it ever was rooted in the first place.
I will say if anyone would try to make sure they're getting their tethering cash, though, it's Verizon. I expect the Droid X official Froyo update will address the exploit Birdman's root uses.
Though hopefully it will have its own fun-filled vulnerabilities to exploit.

I'm still sitting on the sideline about rooting, I plan to do it, I'm just trying to learn more before I do.
Is there any root password that needs to be changed like the iPhone? I want to avoid opening the door so someone can do this:

I didn't see any mention of this vulnerability in the CDMA Hero, maybe it's an iPhone only thing?

No worries. Nobody is going to rick roll your phone if it is rooted.
Here is how it works and why this won't happen on Android. When you have an application on your phone it runs as a certain username. This username has capabilities but not unlimited like root. It has limited abilities. Now, an app that needs root such as an overclocker or screenshot application trys to get root by issuing the su command. The rooted roms have a superuser permissions application that pops up if an application requires root. You have to allow or disallow it. Basically this means that if an app requests root and you didnt tell it to open then most likely you should disallow. Thereby eliminating the security issue. You tell which applications have root and which dont.

there is something similar on the modaco rom SSH is open does have a password tied to it.... but it's randomly generated.... that was the exploit as all their passwords were the same...that's how everyeone in austrailia got rick rolled :lawl:
it would be funny if paul put a rick roll app in this rom though for ****s and grins
The iPhone root method installs an SSH server with a default password allowing anyone to log into your phone remotely if you don't change the password.
First things first: the Hero root method does not install an SSH or telnet server so you can't log in remotely even with any password. The MoDaCo ROM does install an SSH server but it also creates a random password that cannot simply be guessed.
So no one will be logging into your phone.
Probably also worth note - if you don't want the SSH server on the MoDaCo ROM, you can remove it easily:
adb shell
$ su (if you're not already root)
# /system/bin/removedropbear.sh
Your phone will reboot, and no more SSH server.

how do you change the password on the modaco rom once your logged in via ssh, is it just # passwd, that didnt seem to be working for me? and is nano installed? I thought it was but # nano somefilenamehere is not working..
Thanks
Might it be the password that is listed in Settings --> About Phone --> Build Number ?
in that spot, I see my rom version (MoDaCo 1.1 etc) and right after the comma, SSH password: ( your own 6 digit password listed here)

Nano is installed, but it seems buggy to me, I can't seem to get it to write-out after editing for some reason.
As for the password, you can change it by modifying the file:
/data/dropbear/passwd
Unfortunately it's plaintext, but that does make it easier to change:
# echo 'newpassword' > /data/dropbear/passwd
# reboot

You will have to flash a verizon prl. Also make sure the settings in qpst revert back to verizon...especially the ppp configs. If it was properly flashed to cricket, flashing the modem alone won't do it. More them likely, all the settings will have to be corrected.
yep. you will need to enter all the VZN info that was removed to have it hooked up on cricket and you will also have to hope the phone isnt blacklisted on VZN's ESN list. if it is your friend will have a nice android MP3 player that he can play games on.

Ok...download the samsung drivers and a program called qpst. I hear Build 355 is out haven't had a chance to use that one but should be the same. Anyways, hook up your phone to qpst and switch it to dial up networking. Select add new port and find which port you hooked it up to. Name the port COMX (put the port # where x is). Under label name it usb. Hit enter then find the phone and click it. Then select service programming. Then go to the roam tab and then go down to the send file option select browse and locate the prl and then select flash to phone. Make sure it is a *prl and not a zip. Phone will reboot and then attempt *228. Im not infront of the computer but thats the gist. If you can't get it let me know and I will attempt a complete walkthrough. Im on my phone so it's a wee difficult.

Depending on what software you're on...dun can be accessed through the wirless network settings or **33284 ( Then enter spc 000000).
And actually I think I just figured out a simple way to get settings back to vzw. use qpst build 355 and input all the correct cdma info for verizon. And hit write to phone. The phones are prewired for three g only through vzw and that build of qpst will not be able to rewrite the settings so upon reboot the original vzw settings and password will reappear.

You can...it's just more work. And depending on the carrier, like sprint, requires you know someone that will add your flashed phone to the database. There are methods...but as they violate certain laws I cannot discuss on this forum. Since the fascinate is a verizon phone it's software is typically already hard wired for big red. So apn and nv values will revert upon incomplete programming. It's rather simple to flash a phone back to verizon.
I have been trying to operate under a No-Root standard consumer/noob mode and just keep running into walls.
All the advice on sideloading is irrelevant for most apps you'd want to run, like Skype, Opera, Firefox, and GoLauncher Task Manager. I can load the apps and get to the Install screen but am blocked there and have to cancel.
So I'm rooting. I saw a suggestion to keep the device in unroot mode until you need it, which sounded right.
I think the grail here is a non-root solution so users can customize the Ux, get rid of the lousy backgrounds Amazon puts up, and if sideloading is going to be allowed, truly let the user beware and let the sideloading begin.
What do you think? Hear Hear! or am I missing anything?
Rooting is trivial. Easy to do once you are setup with adb.
As to keeping non-root most of the time, that depends on if you use something that won't work while rooted, like VOD... In that case, you need to at least temp un-root and it will work (might need to close it first).
Otherwise, I see no real reason to run un-rooted after you have root.
i've successfully installed firefox with 'adb install' on my un-rooted kf. it runs with no issues thus far. i then tried to install adw launcher standalone from here. this also installs fine, but when i hold down the home button and choose adw i get a force close from adw. is this a dead end without root?

Rooting is trivial for folks like us but I'm not going to tell a noob to download the sdk, mod files, etc. It is just too much for the young mind to grasp. It's why iPod and iPads rule the day and why AOL lived as long as it did--people don't want to take the extra steps.
Anyway, if there were really straightforward ways to sideload and not get locked out and to clean up the Ux issues, then imo most folks would do the lightweight appstore based mods.

This is exactly the reason why I'm not sure I will root my Kindle. I rooted my Evo 4G and my Galaxy Tab, but I might leave the Kindle so I can USE it rather than configure it. Getting bored of trying to figure stuff out like that as I get older.
I have a co-worker who's the young hacker type and he's left his alone, just using Google's mobile web interface for gmail. I might do that, and recommend it for my mom who only checks her personal email like monthly, maybe with the instant on Kindle and wifi at work and home she'll check it more.

What is VOD? If you mean video on demand or streaming, it most certainly will work if you're rooted. The "trick" is to rename the "su" file in /system/bin/

Vod=video on demand.
How do you get vod or amazon prime video to work once rooted? I'm not rooted yet but taking the plunge tonight. BTW, What thread should I follow to root my KF and then install all the google apps?
Have 3 more questions.
What launchers work on the KF? ADW, LP,etc.?
All keyboards work?
Is there any way to text on the kindle? That would help me so much.
What email apps do you reccomend, the stock email app is not agreeing with me.
I have a kindle running 6.2 and I try to root it with superoneclick and it says everything goes ok but then my kindle hangs on the boot screen for a long time. I get it going then I run android terminal and do the su command then It says I dont have access to the root and ideas?

After you have rooted, get the OTA RootKeeper from Voodoo. It will allow you to temp unroot really easy at which point you can use VOD without the block. IF you already have VOD running, you need to kill it from the applications screen (or some other task manager) and then it will run.

You don't need OTA RootKeeper to get VOD while rooted. All you have to do is rename "su" to "su2" in system/bin directory.

True, but get serious. With the app, you press a button and it is done for you. Without it, you have to physically go to the location and rename the file. Then when you want to use an app that needs root, you have to physically go and rename it back.
With the app, you just press a button and it does that for you without any mistakes much faster.
With the exception of VOD, I don't know of anything else that doesn't work when you are rooted (su showing). I normally just run with root on since I have other apps that require root to do their thing.

The apk name is listed along with the packagename in the list. If you are unsure what things are safe to block/disable. There are plenty of people on the forum that would be willing to help you.
I did not see the package name so I will have run it again and read more carefully or try to change the size of that field.

Yeah, it sounds like you blocked a little too many, Lol. You can simply go and save your blocked list and then Unblock all and start going one by one until you figure out which ones you do need.
Please bring all feedback and questions over to the forum dedicated for this.

Here's one thing to think about also, by accident I blocked the Google stock email , not the Gmail. I went back to unblock and I had to re-enter all my emails back again. So what I'm saying after a block and then an un-block it wipes the app. Did you expect that to happen or should I expect that to happen for most apps be turned back on?
Thanks

That's odd, it doesn't wipe any data. Nor have I had an issue like that. Let me look into it.

Bypass All LG Verify your account (LG Google Factory Reset Protection ) on Android OS 5.1.x

Was the file you needed on the thing you plugged in? Is that why you plugged it in or was that an unnecessary step?
Not sure this goes along with the rules on XDA and security in general. There is a reason you no longer have access to a device. We can't and should not take the risk and guess what that reason might be. At all times we should assume an unauthorized access attempt. Especially in this case. Reported (under reserve).
A genious o.o
would have been helpful when i got my new phone, cleaned google account, changed pw, factory reset phone. 72 hour lock!
but.... yeah. much more helpful for phone theft than regular users.
Shortcut to Settings
First, thanks to vn_mobile for sharing.
Second, here's a quicker way
Install Quick Shortcut by OTG as per the OP
Then search for "reset"
Select Settings, MasterClearActivity, Try
Reset Phone
Done!!
Great, I now can make a list of XDA members I know are morons. Let's hope they also have social media info in their profiles.

Exactly!! Security flaws can only be fixed if exposed by "morons" ... read between the lines.

T-Mobile G4??
Does anyone know how to get this done on a T-Mobile G4?? The user setting isn't available in my settings. I keep getting a loop right back to the verify android screen right after putting in the correct info for the previous owner.

Nice. I don't know why there's no "switch access" option in Accessibility settings on my device.

Maybe because this Exploit has been fixed and Google won`t let you bypass the FRP like that forever. It never worked on ALL devices.
this just happened to me on my htc m9. i changed my password sunday. reset my device and im like WTF? im done with google, this feature should be duely noted to consumers and in the literature. im taking my paperweight m9 back to tmobile and getting an iphone. i don't mind security but this is too much.
