Be Honest- Serious Question !
we are all like a one global family participatig in various topics from basic to an advanced level and we should be very happy and accept the fact that atleast on this matter we all try and thrieve to help one another as well as nicely rebuke anyone not doing the groung work before asking any question.
Its all well an good.
Now the more serious matter and please be honest. I will make a start by admitting that ever since I bought Android phone, I ended up spending more time flashing roms after rom and radios and what nowt! My life partner also noticed that I am spendig more time hooking that phone to bloody computer than actually putting up to me ear. She thought phone was more dear to me!
What does your partner think? We might have to srart councelling services for the worse ones!
I'm single, so no problem. : D
But, I don't think I'll be flashing my Hero often. I'm starting to appreciate actually using the phone rather than updating it all the time.
no problem here ...
I flashed my Hero twice, the new Stock ROM and last week the new radio ... and I'm very happy with how it works.
Flashing on a daîly or weekle basis is something for freaks, who like to play. I've different playgrounds
Next time I flash will be Android 2.0 from HTC, until then I use it as a phone and enjoy all the nice apps
P.S. My favorite: OruxMaps, now with Geocaching features
My girl simply loves my hero, first of all she loves playing with it lol
No but with my previous phone (htc diamond) I changed roms more often because it simply didn't work as good as my hero. Als I had a lot more problems
with programs making a hard reset the only way out.
The only update I did was the oficial rom update, don't see the needfor a custom rom (not saying those are wrong or something, kudos to the people who cook them!)
So to be honest; I had my diamond connected to my pc far more often then my hero does. And when bluetooth is fully supported I don't see any need to connect it to
the pc.
I bought the Wife a Hero as well.
I do the experimenting and she gets to share the positives.
To be honest, I only did a couple of ROM updates and was happy with it. Once I found out that HTC are going to be shipping a 2.0 sooner or later, I just can't be bothered...
Zuber
Using my Hero out of the box and the only update I did was the official 2.73 update. It's nice having something that "Just works" after spending a difficult year with the Diamond.
To be honest.... I came from a diamond too. With that said I flash a lot at first with it, but then I found a good Rom that worked. After that I got involved in the Android diamond port. And since I was a cdma user. Let's just say I spent more time in emulators, compiling and telnet then using the phone. Now I got a hero and everything works. I spent the first week on irc tryin to get it root. Now its root and I couldn't ask for more then 2.0.
Back to the subject though. My wife I believe likes my hero. I only fiddle with apps mostly now. She knows I love my phone and I know she's jealous of my phone. But only cuz she's stuck with an LG dare on Verizon.
My Wife thinks I am addicted to mobiles????? ................ ok I think I am too.
I have been happish on the official HTC ROM until a few days ago when I finally broke and rooted and flashed a cooked ROM to solve the Bluetooth issues I had.
Now its a dream and I wont flash it again until the official HTC 2.0.
Before I had a Diamond and an X1 and yes my wife was getting very frustrated that once a week a least I would lose an entire night or day of a weekend flashing and the setting up the phone again.
iPhone sorted that out but I got bored of the lack of customisation so off I went again to Android.
At least now I only rebuild once every few months so she is happer!

In my experience, I had my last phone hooked up to the computer a lot more (HTC Touch/Vogue.) I imagine this has to do with the closed nature of Windows vs the open nature of Android. Android is a lot easier for a ROM cook to work with, I would imagine. Also, the flashing process itself is far easier on the Hero, once it's rooted. At least IMO.
More topic specific, my gf has no problem with my phone addictedness as I mostly geek around with it while I'm at work.
hardly surprising responses from everyone! only a phone-o-phile would regularily visit a discussion forum about phones...
and yes my missus is constantly referring to my phone as my mistress. it almost always shares the bed with us and is the last thing I look at before I fall asleep...
All my previous WM units took a LOT of time.
But my Hero just works - all standard (rooted though), and upgraded of course.
No need to flash anything here
Not got my Hero yet, but my gf has been complaining that im 'obsessing' over it... but it should now be at home waiting for me when i get in today YEAY!
when i first got it, i spent loads of time flashing it, but now ive found a decent rom and radio that gives good batt life and reception, im happy
the next time ill flas it will be with the 2.0 hero rom.
you just need to find a rom that youre happy with
Man i got my Hero around 1 week ago and i have not stopped playing with it since, i flashed the Modaco rom, but after a couple of days flashed back to the most recent stock rom, due to problems with the gsensor. I have rooted he phone and i now spend most of my time installing apps!
I just cant put the Hero down!
I aiming to buy a second hand G1 as my first android mobile. Was aiming to buy desire, but I use music a lot so waiting for a android walkman from sony erisson . I have a few doubts for my first android mobile,
(1) can the G1 stay in battery for at least 2 days(I don't use 3G, i only use 2 g networks) ?
(2) what is rooting can it reverted back ?
(3) When a android releases a update can I install it right away or should i use a specific one ?
Am using sony ericsson w960i. now cant find good android phone to upgrade
Thanks
1- its possible, but you would have to keep it at min. brightness etc. The simplest fix is an extended battery, it makes the phone a little heavier but can double or triple battery life.
2- Rooting is access to superuser commands etc. When you are rooted, you can install faster, cooler, better firmwares, or themes, and you can also tether etc. It takes no more then 30 minutes to root, and you can unroot with just one file (rc29). If you do decide to root, go with CM's stable releases, or try a hero rom.
3- You have to install one that is compatible with the G1. for example, android 2.2 froyo was released today but it cannot be installed on your G1 just yet. But that's not something you should worry about, since we have some of the best developers working for us.
And how much are you paying for your G1? check your local craigslist, prices range there from 70-150 for a used one.
Thanks for the fast reply..
and another question.. all the applications will be available in the market for G1 ?
for example if G1 has 2.1 and desire has 2.1 will both have same apps in its market list ?
by the way am in UK so will be buying it here.. In ebay i have seen for 70 to 150 pounds. the price is good ? or its too much ?
Yes, all apps for 2.1 will appear on a 2.1 rom. But G1 won't get 2.1 unless you root first. And 70 to 150 pounds seems like a fir price, just make sure you get a working one.
Hi guys, im thinking one G1 too and leaving forever WM and my Kaiser.
Here im Portugal even in second hand there are a litle bit expansive, as all the HTC are... The cheapest G1 e found is from 130€!
I friend of mine have an Acer with android SO with 1000mhz cpu... First i love HTC, i had 6 models and the possibility of change rom and stuff are brutal. He said that G1 is totally discontinued, and i am afraid that when i update it to the lastest rom available it comes slow :S But ok, it will be always better than an Acer, even not talking about the qwerty keyboard.
The battery of my Kaiser with normal use of GSM, rarely WIFI and some times GPS longs 2 days, i hope G1 too, that's the aceptable for me.
Im accustomed to rom change on WM i hope on android thing thats not hard!
G1 thats not beautiful and thats not ugly, its different, but ok, all the HTC are. Its bigger than Kaiser but smaller than my lovely HTC Universal, maybe the best phone i ever had!
I believe in XDA-Devs forum, i have been using it for 3 years, used more than 50 different roms, i will read all of your possibile and updated reviews with actual roms, because if it would be positive, my thread home will change.
Have you tried out an android rom on your kaiser? You will have a hard time getting more then a day of battery on your G1. I use it a lot, from 7:00 to 3:00 I still have 40% left, but that's with using it for a few hours and some music, in a place with low signal, and no gps or wifi. And a lot of the roms for the G1 are a helluvalot faster then stock, FYI.

No i have not tried that on Kaiser... The border of the lcd makes the touch experience hard, the new htc and the androids are made for finger touch and no stylus, i wanna try that and much more. Im a little bit afraid of the change to a new device, android for example. Im used to wm, my sweet tomtom gps very very powerful, very efficient here in portugal and if g1 suck im screwed. i have th think about it, i think it will be nice some reviews, because all i found in the web was reviews from 2 years ago, and thats nothing, because of the evolution of the roms. its hard to update for a new rom? this week, i will abandon windows and start using linux full time, for WM thats complicated, for android too?
Just found a Hero for 150 pounds , is it worth it or not ?
Thanks
I need/love/... qwerty keyboard... And think, how many people in your workplace/university/city have a G1? Damn exclusive design Im really think on it.

G1 is a good phone to cut your teeth on. I bought one just to try it out before my Upgrade is due and I pick up a desire.
Mine will be hitting ebay soon with an asking price of £95 with delivery ontop.
Oh why? You dont like yours? My Kaiser is not fast, small or pretty, my previous phones too, so...
I also bought a g1 as my first android phone, in fact I still have it and love it, I can't speak to the change in diffaculty in switching roms on a winmo phone but once you do it the first time on android it becomes an addiction

Of course... The first time i flashed my qtek s100 was insane! In three days i broke it and a had to pay to solve it
But thats a piece of work the root thing, and the first flash to boot up SO 2.2 or something? A friend like i said told me that G1 is overpassed, but i believe on it, G1 is a crazy thing for me, thats the revolution, the first, the incredible
Folks, a G1 appeard in the bidding world here in Portugal but with AZERT keyboard! Its cheapest, its half than a qwerty one... What do you think? Maybe i buy later a qwerty keyboard, i dont know, i want a damn G1, please give me ur opinion.
I just bought this cheap promising tablet and im just wondering is there any custom roms avaible or updates to 2.2 or 2.3 andoid?
This device comes with 2.1-update1 android default, baseband version is V9B01 and kernel version is 2.6.29 zte-kernel(at)Zdroid-SMT. Build number is Light_V9V1.0.0B06
i hope this device gets something newer soon because this feels like it's from stone age after using 2.2
I am thinking of buying this also so I am interested for root/froyo also
i just rooted, it was very easy, i used universal androot.
Nice. You guys have any suggestions for a 3g tablet? Something that is on the market at the moment...
Except for an ipad...

Battery life and screen readability and responsiveness.
hi all,
I'm really considering buying this pad.
How is the battery life?
What about the screen in terms of readability and responsiveness?
Thanks.
i have been using it two days and now it needs to be recharged, specs says 500hrs at idle and 10hrs at full use...
Screen is good and clear, some colour makes weird lines but it doesent bother me. (it is cheap afterall)
Touch response is very good, touchscreen type is resistive and it works perfect in cold conditions.. -30celcius here in finland and it works very good in outdoor use
when in extreme cold conditions, like here in finland at -30celcius, battery behaves very weird, suddenly device reboots and says that battery is dead and when you reboot it says it has same amout of power when it rebooted first time.. i noticed same thing with galaxy s, maby it is just feature to protect device.
my device was left in cold for 5hrs and then i used it*
Just gave one to my wife. Great device for the price. Only problem is Android 2.1, no apps to card, bugged wifi and all known problems for this Rom. Anxiously waiting for 2.2.
My advise for anyone wanting to buy a tablet is... go for it. It's cheap, well build, good looking, fast (for a 700 speed processor) and the screen is very responsive.
Ok so i got one of these 3 days ago. took it back yesterday.
works fine. nice device but it doesnt seem to want to charge when im using it. (draws more current than is charging with)
i returned it for that issue.
basically the optus guy left it on a charger for a couple hours, saw that the charge had went up and called me to come collect it.
no refund/replacement.
is is just mine. do others have this problem?
also MODS can we get a forum for this device. it is VERY popular over here (sold out everywhere) as our telco optus has just released its "mytab" branded zte v9
ALSO:
i can play standard avi files 90% and i would love to be able to overclock. the extra 100mhz would really help. Unfortunately i'm a beginner dev.
I know how to compile and flash a kernel. can someone take me throught he steps for modifying cpu scaling?
I just bought the same ZTE Light yesterday, I really love this tablet, but.... there is a problem charging the battery.. The red charge light is just blinking, but nothing happens. I will take it back to shop and request new one for replacement, because I really liked this device.
So does this mean that you were able to patch 2.1 to 2.2 version ? Any help howto do it ?
theres no patch released yet but zte manufacturer said that it will be released near end of this year

Might be a silly question but did you install the battery? I have one of the Optus Branded ZTE V9's and the battery was not installed in the tablet - it is in the box. The tablet blinks and flashes the Android Bot logo if you dont have the battery in the tablet.

Mine was doing that, there is a status bar on the top which you can slide down, once all the items needing attention are cleared it will stop blinking. For example mine was telling me to update time zone and that the SD card has been mounted. So I believe this is a status light.
Hi all!
I contacted ZTE about V9 (Light) updates and had very frustrating news.
Here's the message:
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am sorry to inform you that android 2.2 software is now unavailable.
Until now we have no plan to upgrade for Android 2.2.
Best Regards
Sincerely yours
ZTE MOBILE DEPARTMENT
So here's the deal. We have to dev the update ourself. I thinking about bringing the device away cause the seller said that the 2.2 update will be out end of this year... quess it won't.
but zte management said that they will release update, what the f*ck?! i hope someone develops 2.2 for this.
maby i just have to sell this and buy galaxy tab...
I quickly realised we have no support. We need a forum for this device.

Where did you get that info? When i bought this device from Sonera they said that 2.2 update will be available end of this year. I have searched info about 2.2 update to this device and there is none. So i decided to ask directly from ZTE and the answer is above.
I hate this situation. This device need Android 2.2 so badly.
ZTE seem to be happy releasing new devices with android 2.1!
They recently attempted to release the eclaire source for this device, but it looks like the upload failed. They have stated that the tablet uses the same kernel/chipset as the ZTE Blade phone, .29 is available for that phone but I suspect it's not upto date enough for the tablet. There are 2.2 ports for the blade phone which may port to the v9.
If you follow the instructions here http://android.podtwo.com/romdump/ to dump your ROM and upload somewhere, we might be able to see just how similar they are. Also if you can grab /proc/config.gz and upload that somewhere too.
Hello all, first post here, I found this forum just by chance while trying to find out if and when froyo was comming to my Legend.
I am in Australia, I only got my legend 3 weeks ago, it is a stock phone supplied from a 3 shop, when all this hype over the past 2 weeks regarding Froyo comming I wasn't really too fussed, I was inlove with my first smart phone (well inlove might be over doing it a bit) it had 2.1 update 1 Eclair HTC sense worked for me, after a bit of playing and getting used to a totaly new O/S, I had just upgraded from a SonyEricsson w595 (I think or W959????)....
Anyway my misses got a HTC desire with froyo 2.2 not long after me and OMG this thing is even better than my legend, the whole phone plus froyo, I know I have only been waiting a short time & I really feel so sorry for all those that been wating for god knows how long.....I WANT FROYO NNNNNNOOOOOWWWW!!!!!
Anyway enough of history, once froyo was released here in Australia, it was vodafone release, so I didn't want to jump in and upgrade incase it locked my phone to vodafone network, or bricking my phone, so I sent 2 seperate questions to HTC asking if it was ok to put the update on my phone, they both replied asking me for IMEI and S/N to confirm the source of my phone, I got 1 reply back saying according their records, the suppied IMEI and S/N was a customised for vodafone phone, I must say at this point I am using it on three network.
I know that there is a lot of people not so happy with HTC's support handling, but in my case, I can't fault the help center one bit, I asked the question, got the right answer and froyo is mine!!!! which is just bloo%y well, cause guess who would have been the worst company in the world if me phone got bricked LOL.
Now the good info:-
I now have Froyo on my phone
My situation
I origanly had the newest version of HTC sync which is from HTC version 3.0.5511 on my PC but my legend didn't like it very much wouldn't connect properly, wouldn't stay connected, so I uninstalled all the HTC software on PC (HTC sync and HTC drivers) installed the version that is on the SD card which is 2.0.25 after a few reboots, PC and phone would connect properly and stay connected...
ran the RUU downloaded from HTC/AU hey presto, installed, no issues, no problems, no dramas, only took about 6-7 mins to update....
Good luck to eveyone else with their update.
Jason
I used XDA Forums for quite awhile for my Samsung Epix, updating that to WinMo 6.5, etc, etc.
I wanted an Android Phone since the G1 first came out, but not having a REAL cell plan (using GoPhone forever, just switched 2 mo ago to the new T-Mobile 4G Monthly), I had to wait for prices to drop (I'm also VERY cheap).
Well, 2 weeks ago, I found a G1 on eBay for $30 (I was the ONLY bidder..Works PERFECT, one minor crack on 'chin'), and got my phone. It is a Bronze (hate the 'lighted keyboard'), ran 1.6, and had a 'bulged' battery, but would hold a charge for a whole 15-20 min, as long as I didn't make a call...lol
So, I hopped on the forums here, and read. And read, then I decided to read some more. Decisions, decisions, decisions... First, I followed the Cyangenmod 6.1 guide, and put that on there. Nice. But a little..Slow? Laggy? It worked OK, but just wasn't right. So I looked at more ROMs. I looked at ICS, Ginger, but settled on Froyo, because I needed stable, and fast, because this is my 'main' phone.
Since I run Linux almost exclusively at home, ADB, and so forth, were not an issue, and the file system on the phone made sense to me. I finally chose the Froyo by Lazlo ROM, and ezterry's kernel, and flashed them. Boy, I am one happy little Droid now. Snappy, fast (once I partitioned my sdcard correctly, and went to ext4 and actually turned on the swap...lol). I also use Google Voice/GTalk a ton at home (I said I was CHEAP), so found Talkatone, which works just right for wifi calls when I run out of the 100 minutes on my Prepaid plan.
So, within 3 days I had a Froyo, wifi-calling, Android running little phone. That battery life I could measure in seconds. So, off to Amazon, and bought one of those extended-2400 mAh batteries and back covers. What a difference! HOURS of use! Days, even!
So, for around $50 (including shipping for phone, and cost of new battery), and about 2 hours of actual "work", I have a Froyo G1, that I'm VERY happy with!
Thank you, Google, HTC, XDA-Developers, Lazlo, ezterry, and whoever made the battery.
For an 'old' phone, it sure does work great!
+1

marketplace alternative?
have the current froyo by lazlo on my G1, but when trying to add talkatone the marketplace (Now Google Play?) says this is not compatible with my htc dream.
Any suggestions or workarounds? thanks!

Same, tried looknig it up on the play store on my phone, it wasn't shown on there. lol. Groove IP doesn't have good quality for some reason.
apk
Talkatone is in the market, just doesn't show up since these phones are really only supposed to allow 1.6... Just went looking for the apk and suprised to find it available on Talkatone's website. Works great, came here to post, and had a message from the OP - Thanks. pretty slick old phnne for $10! I downloaded the "side loading" version from w w w.talkatone.com/android-side-apk.html (sorry not allowed links ) Must have "allow installing" checkbox checked.
UPDATE
I stuck with Froyo By Laszlo (FBL) for quite awhile, and then have been "experimenting" with different ROMS.
So far, most of the GB roms (for me, at least) seem to be either too laggy, or have random reboots, lockups, or memory is HORRIBLE. At least, having my 'giant' battery makes battery life a moot point, so I don't figure that into whether I 'like' a ROM or not.
So far, it seems a tie between FBL and ezTerry's "Official AOSP 2.2 OTA" as far as stability/speed is concerned. The first time I used the AOSP rom, it had some 'odd' behaviors, but when I retried it, it may have been a 'bad' download.
AOSP does a better job with moving all programs, data, and caches over to the SDCard, too, so the apps have more 'memory' to play in.
I'll update this thread as I learn more, and my thoughts and 'concerns' with the ROMs I try out.
Happy Modding!
