slide on AT&T? - myTouch 3G Slide General

Here is my issue. I'm stuck on AT&T. I am contemplating buying the slide, rooting it and using it on AT&T (in b4: at&t sucks), and well... I am just stuck between getting the touch pro 2 and the 3g slide. I am a long time user of HTC (kaiser, wizard), and I love the way the phones run, but they just don't seem to get any faster. And android is more conducive to getting good apps. WinMo just doesn't have the development like android does. So my issue is.. Is the slide worth getting? I have also heard that the slide won't run on AT&T's 3G network... Any hotfixes for that? That's kind of an important issue I suppose.. Anyways, any slide users from AT&T have any feedback / anyone compared the touchpro 2 to the slide? I've been scouring google looking for comparisons but nothing insightful has come up. Thank you.

Can't help you on comparing phones, but the slide will not do 3G on AT&T's network. The radio operates at different frequencies for 3G than what AT&T uses, there is nothing you can do to make it work.

Why don't you just go with the aria.my wife has the mt3g slide and I have the aria. Theres not much of a difference between the two except size and a keyboard. The aria is a beast. Don't let the size fool ya.also they have the new samsung galaxy and I think a dell streak that's supposed to be pretty good too.

I had the aria, and it's not condusive to texting. I went and sold it for $350 on ebay and was going to buy the slide until I realized it doesn't support AT&T's 3g network.

Look into the Galaxy. I had the joy of playing around with one, and am seriously debating on if I want to sell my Slide and grab one. Wonderful hardware, amazing battery life for the hardware in it, and I have never seen a display that made things look so nice.
My only gripe is the lack of a physical keyboard, but Swype does a damn fine job of handling most of my texting needs, only hassle is dealing with terminal and typing in commands.

Yea, did you try swype? It makes typing a breeze on the smaller screen. But by all means go check your att store for the galaxy or the dell streak. They are very high end devices. But also no keyboard

Incredible - Is it worth it?

Hey guys,
I have kind of a unique situation...
I do a lot of International travel for work - as such I currently have a VzW TP2. About a week ago the screen "shattered" (beneath the surface - phone still works fine). Looking at VzWs International Phones, I am disgusted by my options...
They can get me a replacement TP2, but then I will be locked into 2 years (work policy) with an already out-dated hardware phone (love the phone - but even with the Overclock now...a 3mp camera w/o flash...etc...it is out-dated). Of course they offered me an Imagio and or the LG Fathom. None of these phones make me excited about having it for 2 more years.
I really want either an Incredible or an X (too bad they arent International)...I was sort of leaning toward the Incredible since I like HTC and from what I understand they use the same battery...so just assuming the Incredibles battery life is better? Plus the X doesnt have a flash does it?
Anyway... to my question.
What I was thinking about doing - was getting an Incredible or an X - using that Domestically and then before I travel, de-program it (*228 ???) and program my cracked up TP2 and use that overseas, and when I come back de-program the TP2 and re-program the Incredible/X.
I travel about 1-3 weeks per trip, and usually about 6-8 trips per year.
The crappy part is I use my TP2 to watch movies on the plane from time to time...so if I use the cracked TP2 when traveling...I will be watching movies on a busted up screen...which sounds crappy but I REALLY want an Incredible or an X.
So - those of you that have the Incredible - and hopefully some of you were former TP2 users - would the above scenario be worth it to you? Or would you just get a replacement TP2 (my current TP2 is OC'ed stable at 729mhz - runs very smooth, but was never happy with the camera. only way to get a "decent" picture is to take the cover off before you take the picture) ???
The other option I may have is switching to AT&T and getting the Captivate...but not a huge fan of going to AT&T.
Sorry for the long post - looking forward to hear what you all have to say.
Sounds like a pretty good plan, sorry about ur broke screen. couldn't u use incredible on the plane though? Airplane mode with WiFi on?
Is for activating and deactivating I couldn't tell u, sorry.

yeah i could - just dont really care to have to carry 2 phones around =)
i travel pretty light (one to the big things i loved about getting my tp2 - stopped taking a phone, camera, ipod and went to just the TP2).
VzWs International phone selection is horrible right now...(not that it was ever great).
I personally love the DInc. I came from the samsung intensity(lol) to lg dare, to droid eris, to the DInc.
such a great phone you wont be dissappointed
I came from a Touch Pro 2 same as you, I loved my TP2. As far as an International phone It's pretty hard to beat.
That being said, aside from the International aspect there is no comparison.
It did take me a while to get used to not having a keyboard but the benefits of the Incredible make it well worth it.
Get the Incredibe, you won't regret it.
Also, you might look into getting a replacement screen for your TP2.

Samsung Galaxy S (Verizon will call it Samsung Fascinate)
will possibly be available next month for 200 with contract. Better GPU, Process, Screen Size, Screen Quailty, Battery life..

do you know if it will be a global phone ???
from what i have found looks like no (CDMA only) ???
You could also pick up a used storm or tp2 for a few bucks and get the dinc for day to day. Tp2 would probably be a better choice since the batteries are interchangable. Seen them all over cl for cheap.

CDMA actually has a pretty fair international penetration. The GSM folks would have you believe that you can barely travel outside the USA and still use CDMA. Nothing could be further from the truth, and GSM is no panacea either. It has the same differing frequency issues as CDMA does.
Here's an interactive map of CDMA areas worldwide so you can check if where you tend to travel has CDMA coverage. http://www.cdg.org/worldwide/index.asp
You can also check with Verizon to see what countries they have CDMA roaming capability in.
If there is CDMA in the area you travel, get the Incredible.
Update: VZW has a very inexpensive dual CDMA/GSM phone, the Escapade, that is well reviewed. It isn't fancy, but it will keep you in touch.

Mytouch HD Speculation

How do guys think it will be? I think it has to be a super phone since it looks like it has a front facing camera, and because it looks like t-mobile's first HSPA+ phone, and I read online that the first HSPA+ phone will have a 1ghz processor of the 3rd generation. I know this phone might not be real, but if it is, and has killer specs would you get it? I think I'll get it if it dosen't have a physical keyboard, and i woukd get it in white.Any opinions on it?

I know, and I hope it's real lol, main reason why I want the mytouch phones is because its tmobile's flagship phone, and you can make them 100 % you lol. Plus I want a super smart phone with no keyboard I got the slide, until a better mytouch without a keyboard and with killer specs comes out, plus makes sense it might be tmos first HSPA+ phone it is their flagship device
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using Tapatalk
It's weird.. I bought the slide because it had a KB. I like a phone with a hardware keyboard. If the MTHD doesn't have one I'll have to find a new device .....
Sent from my Rooted T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App running CR_Mod_1.35.531_OTA
I think it won't its too thin to have one, plus they might do a keyboardless mytouch then one with a keyboard, and continue that trend or maybe not, but personally I don't want a physical keyboard, especially for the fact that cases look better.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using Tapatalk
I wouldn't get this or any other MyTouch device for that matter. I got the slide because it was the newest Android device with a physical keyboard T-mobile had to offer. But I was disappointed, build quality is horrible and I can't believe HTC actually made this (seems more Tmobile than HTC influence). Feels like a cheap toy cell phone, and has no grip whatsoever. My next device will be whenever Tmobile decides to get a real HTC device with a keyboard, maybe the rumored HTC Vision? Was about to go for the Vibrant but I heard build quality isn't so good on that either, and it has GPS issues. So I guess I will wait. I have another year on contract and then I'm free to jump over to another carrier. AT&T and Verizon not looking too bad about now.
But anyway, if this device is what's next from T-Mobile, then I'm not interested. Looks like a slide that got sat on and stretched vertically. Still cheap looking, trackball is flat and isn't easy to use, and it just looks like a fail waiting to happen.
Having said all of that, this is my first Android device so anything is better than what I was experiencing with Windows... The HD2 was the greatest device HTC built for Windows IMO, and it was still lacking. It finally proved that even with great specs, a Windows phone is a Windows phone and will always give you the same problems.
I wish i new about this before, i would have waited for it instead...But i guess this sort of thing is inevitable these days...
@ace me too lol

Best qwerty android phone?

I just lost my galaxy s and since im planning to get a qwerty phone that runs on android. Is desire z a good choice? Im avoiding touch screen phones since I type faster with qwerty keypads.
thanks

things of this matter really is a personal taste. I started my first qwerty phone with a sidekick 2 and than a lx and than a G1 to a G2 all the keyboards i had to get use to and i enjoyed all of them. Even though the G2 has a really nice sturdy qewrty keyboard you should just go to the store if you can and hold it and see if you like it. and i also never used touch screen keyboards but i gotta say giving swype a chance i love it. Its almost as fast as the qewrty if not faster when i get use to it.
Yea the g2 is an awesome choice. Probably one of the best keyboards if not the best in the world right now. Its on par with the touchpro2 keyboard, which if you don't know is considered to be one of the best of all time.

The general consensus is that the DREAM had a better keyboard than the VISION, but in terms of *current* android phones, VISION is definitely TOP. If you want a high powered android phone with great flexibility and a keyboard, you really have no choice... its VISION or nothing.
Thanks for the replies guys. Dont think Vision is available here in the Philippines, have to check.
Is the hinge issue really a problem with the Desire Z? Keep on seeing peeps talking about it.

The keyboard and hinge actually sold me on this phone. The Z hinge is better than a slider in that it actually stays closed unless you want it to open. My Motorola Droid has a very tight slider but still has a tendency to slide open a few millimeters when I grip it and then snag on my pocket.
Yeah, I am also looking for a slide-out qwerty-keyboard phone, but it has to be one that is better than G2 and mytouch 3g slide...
any suggestions?
The current best qwerty android phone right now is the Desire Z. Unless you have Sprint, then it would probably be a tossup between the epic 4g and the Evo Shift 4G (different pros and cons).
The only irritation I have is the four-row keyboard... I'd have gone with 'world class' if it had a full five-row instead of mashing all the extra characters down onto the keyboard along with the numbers; frustrating not to have a hard key for any of the following, when SSH'ing into a machine to remote admin:
<>|^[]{}
Especially so with the fairly useless TMo quick-keys on the G2 (why not just map menu+ to apps you use a lot?), and the much-HATED, entirely bloody brainless www./.com button where the tab key should be.
those keys, with proper apps, can be remapped. and if you're looking for a 5 row keyboard, you're pretty much SOL since I can't even think off the top of my head of any android phone that features that kind of keyboard.
I maintain my stance in this though: If you want a hardware keyboard, the Desire Z is your best bet. I don't know of any other keyboard that is equal in hardware and software.
I wish the G2 had kept the G1's keyboard. I loved that keyboard more than any other I've ever used.
So it goes.
The G2's CDMA cousin, the HTC Merge, hasn't been officially released stateside, but I think it looks quite nice keyboard-wise.
I'm going to tell you right now, don't hold your breath for the Merge. As I have said it on htcmerge.com, the merge is like a $2 hooker. It's been everywhere but sticks nowhere and leaves with a bad taste.
it's a damn good phone though, I had a chance to handle the Merge in person and I loved it.. except i'm on AT&T and can't unlock the damn thing.
So HTC Merge wouldn't work for me as I live in Europe, huh? I won't be able to use the phone with my sim-card, right? The same goes for Evo Shift 4g too, right?
hmm... htc desire z and g2... don't they both got the annoying loose hinge, or?
Nah, to be honest, I was more than happy with T-mobile's mytouch 3g slide. The only and major flaws on that was the non-HD camera and that annoying "Generic Failure"-error when sending/receiving a MMS... other than that, it was a GREAT phone! Loved the keys layout too!
So yeah, if there'd be a way to fix those things on the mytouch 3g slide, then i'd definitely get that phone again as this G2 of mine is just...well...crap and HEAVY..
Lol I love the keyboard aha... compared to my motorola cliq. G2 and DisireZs keyboard is pretty good

essentially yes. Don't expect the merge or evo shift 4g to work on any carrier except for their own respective companies. sorry.
as I mentioned in other posts, the hinge can be "modded" with a new stronger spring to get it a real snap.

I thought one of the key selling points of the Merge was that it was going to be one of Verizon's "global" edition phones (so CDMA for Verizon networks with a SIM slot for quad-band GSM and 2100 UMTS). Not sure if that's changed since the specs were originally leaked though...
it's global, but not global 3G...
the 2100 UMTS is not used in every country. so yes, it's a global phone, but on edge. on 3G, it would only work in countries that use the 2100 band exclusively so it's heavily carrier and country dependent. THAT and they would want you to be using the carrier's international plan over the local plan so they can still charge you up the ass while you're travelling.

Well yes, but 2100 UMTS is used almost everywhere except for the Americas (some exceptions apply, but most of Europe and Asia support it). This is the same reason the G2 is attractive for overseas use, too. Without the Merge actually being out yet, it's hard to say, but I think the idea would be people would get it unlocked so they could turn off the CDMA radio when overseas and use a local SIM for everything. Just speculation for now though...

Should I sell my nexus S for a G2??

Convince me. The stainless Steele body is appealing to me. I don't really see a difference in the processor speeds, and the full keyboard is appealing. Battery life on my nexus s is unimpressive however and I've heard that the nexus s packs a bigger battery. Can anyone persuad me????

I'll trade you my g2 fo the nexus s ;].
In terms of screens most would probably like the nexus s screens more since its more vibrant <--- LOL.. colorful and all that smack. However the g2's screen would likely to be sharper than the nexus s. All depends on what you are using it for. Nexus s's screen would be better than g2 if you were doing multimedia, but g2 is probably better for reading text and etc.
EDIT: I would like to note that once you feel the g2's build you most likely won't want to let go of it. Just feels so solid. I took my cases off the g2 because I missed the feeling of the actual phone
The G2? Why not wait for a dualcore phone? hehe.

Finally gave up on ATT getting any decent Android devices. Well, the Fascinate seems OK, but lots of complaints on these forums (and elsewhere) about various things. Plus, the outlook for new devices in the first part of next year does not look very promising either. And I've always been a big HTC fan. I found out that Bell Canada released the HTC Desire Z about a month ago, with 3G bands compatible with ATT's network. I decided to take the plunge. Not an easy pill to swallow, as an unlocked, unsubsidized device like this goes for a premium (and obviously not for everyone). But what the heck, its a been a good year, and I decided to get myself a Christmas gift.
For those that may not know, and are interested in the Desire Z, the Bell-branded NAM version, model number A7275 is currently the only one that will work with ATT's 3G network. The European and T-Mobile (the G2) versions will only work on EDGE. So take care when shopping around.
Let me tell you guys, this device is amazing. The build quality is excellent, with most of the body being a gorgeous brushed aluminum, accented with some slightly grippy plastic (also nice looking, and does not cheapen the appearance). The keyboard is very good. The layout is slightly different from my trusty old Tilt2, with the keys slightly smaller (and one less row of keys). But after one week with the device, I'm already adjusting quite well.
I've played around with Project Android on my trusty old Tilt2, so Android is not completely new to me. I'm still getting accustomed to where some things are located, but that is true with switching to any new phone OS. Knocks on Android for not being as "smooth" as the iPhone seem largely unfounded to me. The Desire Z is super smooth, and of course has tons of customization and functionality that the iPhone will never have. And the HTC Sense modifications are all very nice.
TO get the phone up and running, I just had to slip my SIM into the device, and manually enter in the ATT data network APN settings (only had WiFi before I did this), and was good to go with 3G speed. I already keep my contacts, email, calendar on Google. So the Google implementation is awesome for me. I just entered my Google login and password, and it synched all that stuff in a couple minutes.
The vendor stated on their website that SIM unlocking voids the manufacturers warranty. So I decided to go ahead and root, the day after I received the phone (and now overclocked, as well). Also used a couple different tools (Titanium Backup and Absolute System Root Tool) to successfully remove the Bell bloatware. The Bell ROM is missing the HTC Locations app (I use Google Maps all the time anyway), and the Android car panel (which I don't really like), but otherwise, the Bell ROM is pretty close to stock. So I'll stick with the stock ROM for now.
Moral of the story, no regrets buying an unlocked Desire Z. Absolutely loving it!
....
I highlighted in red above the exact model you need to buy for it to work on AT&T 3g network and I remember reading somewhere else that it has to be this exact model number, I think it was in a thread here on xda developers and they gave a link on where to but it from, Ill try and find it for you, but in the mean time heres the link for the site I got the above thread from.

I find HTC's build quality to be much better that Samsung's. The heft and the feeling of the desire z, is what originally won me over when I was debating between it and the samsung vibrant.

I purchased mine from Ebay. I believe Negri Electronics also sells it online. It'll run you in the neighborhood of $500-600.
I'm selling my Nexus for a G2. I'm going to make at least $250, and the G2 seems at least equal to or better than the Nexus in every category except the screen. I can sacrifice the SAMOLED for a SLCD for $250 (plus the added benefits like a non-plastic body, 4G, a keyboard, and a notification LED).

Wow, that was quick, didnt you just get your G2?
Guess that speaks volumes for the G2 vs Nexus S.

Man. I was considering selling my G2 and picking up a Nexus S, but this thread has pretty much gotten rid of that idea. What do you guys think about the MT4G, though? I am still considering picking up that one and dumping the G2. (Still haven't gotten accustomed to the keyboard.)
I'm baffled why anyone would want a myTouch over a G2.
Just saying that dumbass name pisses me off. myTouch. ugggggh
However, I wouldn't mind having a Nexus S to play with. I don't think I'd ever give up my G2 though. <3

Yeah, when I first decided to buy a new phone a couple of weeks ago, I just figured the myTouch was a ****ty phone based on its name and was going with the G2 for sure, but then I learned that it certainly competes hardware-wise...and coming from an iPhone 3G, I would very possibly be more comfortable with its form factor.
Lighter and smaller, too. I suppose if this "mirror" tool ends up working well so I can video chat with the G2, that will solve my last big problem. Anyone think that will pan out?

So long incredible

Well guys i sold my incredible i couldnt deal with verizon anymore i went to at&t and a new phone of course I went back to Windows Mobile 6.5 I stuck with HTC it was HTC or bust pretty much so i'm picking up an HTC Tilt 2 well it was nice having an android but i got work to do modding winmo 6.5
Why didn't you at least Win7.1? Also, how is going from Verizon to AT&T improvement, I switched from them, I was tired of never having 3G.
What bugged you about Verizon so much?
I can't wait to switch back to at&t. gsm has never failed me for reception nor data issues. Verizon has overswamped towers in my area. my avg reception is between -85 to -92 db while holding one bar for dear life. switching to 1xrtt does nothing.

Horrible speeds for 3g and at&t was cheaper for me only thing i miss is unlimited data for smartphones, I'm wondering if i could use at&t's medianet data for their feature phones on my at&t smartphone that'd be sweet i'd save 50%+ a month instead of 25%+
Why dont you buy an htc sensation and put it on ATT?
I had a Touch Pro2 on VzW, which as far as I know, is nearly the same thing as the Tilt 2, but I think most people regard the VzW version as the superior one. I upgraded to an Incredible, and I can't imagine ever going back to it. You must have really hated Verizon!

You just have to fine what works for u.. cause im sure in the big cities its harder to choose.. but in the sticks.. its whoever gets the best signal for me..

I think that makes sense. And FWIW a friend of mine got his first Android smartphone - an Inspire - and loves it.
I'm very happy with my inspire.. still have my spare dinc to use for music at work.. etc

Wow - that sounds like a nightmare. Leaving Android and Verizon for ATT and Windows 6.5... I hope you wake up from that terrifying dream soon!
