How to tether Vibrant on XP - Vibrant General

As you know compared to EVO and many other phones the Vibrant/Samsung Galaxy S only requires one more step before installation of tethering application on your PC: it needs Samsung own USB driver.
So
- you get from Market and install application on your cell;
- download Samsung driver from the web and install on PC;
- download and install application on PC.
That's it!
Here are some details for those who never tried tether and might need step-by-step instructions:
Step 1. Get and install PdaNet or EasyTether from Market on your cell phone and in Settings/Applications/Development check ON "USB debugging"
Step 2. Download and install USB driver for Samsung cellphones on your PC. Same driver works for both PdaNet or EasyTether applications. I took it from (i am new user at XDA and am not allowed to post the links) www (dot) mobile-stream (dot) com/easytether/android (dot) html
Step 3. Google, download and install PdaNet or EasyTether ( i usePdaNet, it has Bluetooth data connection option also) on your PC. During installation the application will find that the driver is already installed and will ask you what to do, you answer NO to reinstall
When you will need Internet connection:
- Connect Vibrant and PC using USB cable
- Launch PdaNet on Vibrant, push button "Connect"
- if you set up not automatically connect then click on PdaNet icon "Connect" on your PC (in the task tray in right bottom corner)
Done !
Novices also may not know that these applications are free for 1 month for both secure and regular unsecure http/https connections. Then if you need https you have to pay one time fee ($10 or $18) which will work on one phone and several PC. Just a regular http stays free.

Weird, i didn't need drivers. Win7 x64
I just plugged in and connected pdanet

I'VE GOT it tethered to a XP w/sp2 and the easy tether samsung driver would not work for me with PDAnet
it did with easy tether, but i've had problems with it since installing
for the full descript of the issue that i suspect is caused by easy tether, see the thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729999
am waiting on 2.2 and hopefully won't need either

could be wrong pre-Vibrant driver. The one i cited above explicitly mentions Vibrant

just went to the link, and it was same place i downloaded the driver - i don't see any mention of the vibrant - on the first page, there is mention of the Behold II & Omnia
maybe i'm just not seeing it??

Do not see Vibrant? It happens. Make a search for "Vibrant" in this page

Using my mda as a modem via usb /gprs

Im off on holiday to a place with no wifi access im taking my laptop and was wondering if i can use my gprs connection so i can check email and browse using my laptop ?
Thanks
Try a program called pdanet available from www.junefabrics.com. I had the same issue last week and used pdanet to connect my PC to the internet via my GPRS T-Mobile account. The program worked well for me.
Modem Link
Look in programs on your MDA and you will see a program called ModemLink, it allows you to use your MDA as an Edge/GPRS modem. It's how I connect to the internet at home on my desktop. Hook up to the USB cable run Modem Link hit activate and follow the directions. If you look on Your CD that came with the phone in the OEM folder you'll find directions and a driver to use.
Heres a good guide:

Also see http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=510&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 for more info.
I was recently given a new laptop and had to reconfigure all my connections. Like you I have TM GPRS and while slow, it was still better than the alternatives. I tried & tried to get the usb modem to work but couldn't so in a last ditch effort I started playing around with the bluetooth modem and eureka, it works. I actually think it works better than usb, no cable, you dont have to mess with modemlink, it's stable, I'm using it right now.
My laptop is a dell xps which uses Toshiba's bluetooth stack. I initially tried configuring it with the auto configure wizard and it wouldn't recognize the wizard's modem. Instead use the manual process and in the Toshiba version there is a switch between modem and file transfer, it defaults to file transfer in the wizard, setting the switch to modem it instantly connected and logged into the gprs net (*99#, no password or logon info needed).
I also recently updated the wizard with the new tmobile rom which I believe eliminates modemlink because when I said you dont mess with it, it's because it's not there or at least I couldn't find it. Anyone else see this?
which one is more easier to set up?
thanks
usb
I figured this out yesterday using the usb cradle (to see if it would work).
The key is in the order that you do things.
Go to the wiki site (look at the top of the page - left) and follow the really simple instructions. THey work perfectly.
Good luck

8525 USB Modem

My Hermes does not have the wireless modem program. Is there another way to Tether my Pocket PC to My Labtop. Or Is there a download to upgrade my Phone.
all of the information you need can be found here: http://pocketpccentral.net/help/cingular/8525_usb_modem.htm
Be sure to reboot your pc after installing the driver before you try to use it. (learned the hard way)
Start/Programs/Internet Sharing
The latest overhaul of the "Wireless Modem" program for tethering to your laptop also included a name change to "Internet Sharing".

The post above this is correct, it is now called "Internet Sharing" and is located in the "Programs" folder of newer 8525's. You should have two choices, either USB or Bluetooth. I've tried both and both work good. However, I recommend using the USB cable that came with your device as this provides faster access to the net. This will be especially true when you're out of the 3G network area and have to rely on Edge.

Unable to tether Vista to a Mogul running 3.56.651.0

My firm just upgraded my notebook to Vista Enterprise 32-bit (against my wishes!). My Mogul is running the most recent Sprint/HTC-supplied ROM, 3.56.651.0. Under XP, I had no problem tethering using the built-in WM "Internet Sharing" app over USB.
Under Vista, no joy.
I've tried a thousand things. I've downloaded the most recent version of WMDC. After disabling "Enable advanced network functionality" in Connections -> USB to PC, I was able to get WMDC to see the device, xfer files, sync, etc. But still no joy on tethering.
The steps I'm following (that worked on XP):
(1) on the device, I fire up Internet Sharing, select USB, and hit Connect; the phone connects to Sprint's Phone as Modem service (which I'm paying for) fine.
(2) I plug the device into notebook via USB cable
(3) the notebook complains "Windows needs to install driver for your Generic RNDIS" and offers "Locate and install driver software (recommended), "Ask me again later", or "Don't show...". I select "Locate and Install..."
(4) the notebook says it's installing the driver, but then complains:
=======
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
=======
and then the driver install windows complains:
=======
Device driver software was not successfully installed
Please consult with your device ...
Generic RNDIS Failed
=======
Has anyone gotten _THIS COMBINATION_ (i.e., Vista on the computer, plus a Sprint Mogul running ROM 3.56.651.0) to work? I'm at my wits end.
Thanks!

A quick [non]update, if you're having this problem too... No joy from hours of internet searching and posting on other boards.
...R
my search continues also
i use wmwifirouter to tether via usb/wifi, so i guess you could try that. But i don't think it'll make a difference.
For a while, my vista ultimate wouldn't detect my phone via activesync, i did a repair on it and it fixed. It could probably be the usb driver problems.
I also installed windows 7 to play around, the usb tether worked on that also
I discovered a short while ago that the Media Net was needed in the drop down under Network Connections on the Internet sharing app.
Not sure if ya still looking for a fix but in vista you have to download/install Windows Mobile Device Center then plug your phone and wait for it to detect it. Once the sync is set up disconnect and boot up the internet sharing hit connect then hook up the usb cable. BTW using internet sharing with vista sucks ass cause it randomly connects and disconnects.
I have been using "Wireless Router" for a year and a half now on my XP desktop. It works great, now I have just purchased a laptop w/ Vista Home Premium 64 bit and I get an issue with drivers too.
I have WMDC installed but the system will not recognize my Mogul 6800 as a modem.
If anyone has an idea of were to get the driver or knows any other parameter settings we would appreciate it. I also will update my finds as I search.
BTW, Wireless Modem has a non detection feature if your are interested.

how to tether (USB)

ok, so for the first time last night I wanted to try a USB tether to get internet on my laptop at the airport. Plug in my EVO with the usb cable.... "Failed to install device" is what I get from windows (windows 7).
I clicked the "internet sharing" option on my evo when it came up, so what am I missing?
Thanks!

In spite of the option being shown, it has been disabled by sprint. PDAnet is your best/easiest way to do this.
Free version is available.
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
"Easy Tether Pro" all the way. It is so simple, reliable and automatic that it takes all the fun out of struggling to tether via usb. That and it doesn't require root.
I have tried all of the others (PDANet etc) am amazed that this app isn't talked about more.
use HTC sync. i didn't hack my phone or anything, straight out of the box, downloaded HTC sync from their website and then when you plug in the usb cable, select share internet connection when it asks on the phone. that's it... i figure it's provided by HTC, it's allowed?

For me, that method only works when I have 4G coverage.

Can not access from PC both SD or Internal flash storage

Initially all worked OK. But then after some installs from the Market i am not able to do that
Here are some facts:
- i see the drive letters assigned for both of them on PC but when you click Explore the message is "Please insert a disk into drive M: (or N or whatever)".
- They are shown as mounted on the phone . Dismount and mount again changes nothing
- the phone is recording photos/videos OK on internal memory means flash is working fine.
- SD card is perfectly working too. if you extract it and put into computer you can read/write it. On the cell you can play music from it etc no problems
- I restored everything with Factory Data Reset but things did not change
- Same story from another PC
Is this some driver problem ? Or flash memory is locked by Vibrant OS?
I suspect EasyTether or PDANet third party driver for Samsung phones is responsible.
Tethering works though
It's probably one of your 3rd party apps. Mine works fine.
Isn't it strange that combination of cell factory reset + another fresh PC does not work?
S4X, I had the same issue this morning. I was performing a data transfer and had a error message (from computer). From that point forward my phone was no longer able to mount the internal storage, external micro sd card. The only portion of space that was recognized was the dedicated internal app space. Wiping the phone failed to repair the issue. I took it my local tmobile store and they immediately swapped it for a new one. No hassle no fuss. I hope these are isolated incidents. So far my new new phone is working great.
I'd recommend a return.
I should note, my phone was not rooted and I did not have either PDAnet or Easytether installed.
Same problem here, have not fixed problem yet. looks like it's getting replaced tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I'm keeping an eye on it. If it happens again I'll post something. In the meantime, I'm avoiding any multi-gig file transfers. I'm hoping we're just two unlucky owners and this is not a wider issue. Otherwise, I love the phone.
try turning on development mode. With that off, my mac wont see my vibrant at all. turn it on, and everything shows up.
i think easytether caused the issue
i couldn't get pdanet to work, they didn't have the correct samsung driver, so i unistalled pdanet from my laptop
installed easy tether yesterday - had a heck of time getting the driver to install
then tonite, like you said, couldn't get the laptop to recognize the phone,
uninstalled easytether, re-installed, and actually did it a few times tonite - took about an hour to get my laptop connection working
the hardware recognized changed from Samsung T959, to CDX morem something, and finally when on the last attempt it was recognized as an "android ADB device" and i let windows auto install the driver, it's now working
really think it's easytether and that driver not being stable
i'm on a windows xp w/sp2
Thanks for responds guys but happily after billions of different attempts the problem is solved.
I still can not understand how these changes to the phone happened. Probably some installed software changed in Vibrant something.
Anyway, here it is, it's very simple, but this has an additional step to what it was before nevertheless. After usual USB cable connection and confirmation of using the phone as a mass storage device on the phone popped up menu (if you've made this selection on the phone settings), say into Voice dialer: "Open SD Card", and when new screen appears, click "Enable USB mass storage"
I can also post the way i tether if you like. It works fine like it works fine with EVO for example. T959 is recognized well
