how to tether (USB) - EVO 4G General

ok, so for the first time last night I wanted to try a USB tether to get internet on my laptop at the airport. Plug in my EVO with the usb cable.... "Failed to install device" is what I get from windows (windows 7).
I clicked the "internet sharing" option on my evo when it came up, so what am I missing?
Thanks!

In spite of the option being shown, it has been disabled by sprint. PDAnet is your best/easiest way to do this.
Free version is available.
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/

"Easy Tether Pro" all the way. It is so simple, reliable and automatic that it takes all the fun out of struggling to tether via usb. That and it doesn't require root.
I have tried all of the others (PDANet etc) am amazed that this app isn't talked about more.

use HTC sync. i didn't hack my phone or anything, straight out of the box, downloaded HTC sync from their website and then when you plug in the usb cable, select share internet connection when it asks on the phone. that's it... i figure it's provided by HTC, it's allowed?

For me, that method only works when I have 4G coverage.

No it won't run on OS X. I use a Macbook with mine using Missing Sync which works very well for getting your contacts and calendars on the device. Everything else I put on manually or if desperate run VMWare windows emulation and activesync.
Missing Sync is here http://www.markspace.com/.
Hope that helps.
And if there is an .exe file you can run windows on your mac just to run those files (if you cant find the cab).
The best way to sync your HD with Mac is using exchange. You can goto mail2web to get a free account there and follow the instructions there to setup your Active Sync. I am now auto sync with Entourage all the time and it is free
I use syncmate. Works great for me http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html
Says you only get a 30 day free trial on that site (mail2web) for hook up. $14.95 a month, or did i miss something (i hope)
Guys what do you do with .exe files? How do you install them?
Go back to the site and get a cab, or google for one, when you (someone on Windows) installs the program the cab can be copied and kept. Some kind souls post these where Google can find them.

I can see your point!
i have a question....am considering a Macbook Pro, deal breaker would be if Internet Sharing on Touch HD didn't work on the Macbook, i want Macbook for travel and need THD to provide the internet access
so, does it work?
You can set up a portion of your mac to run windows.
you mean dual boot or what? and that's a no on OSX Internet Sharing?
damn
I haven't tried this myself as I haven't needed to run windows but you can try this, its free...

that looks like a messy work around for a very basic thing :/ i'll rather go with Vaio SR then and avoid having to install guest OS just to get online :/
but if someone could tell me what happens when they plug in Touch HD into a Macbook and press Internet Sharing Connect it would be kinda helpful

I don't think it should be a problem at all as long as you set up on the Macbook and HD. I can't try it because I don't use dial up any more. These are the set up dialogues you get when you select Internet Sharing after plugging in USB to the Macbook.
same as on pc, next step is to press that connect at the bottom and laptop should connect to net via TouchHD....it's not dial-up, it's using your 3G data package for net on laptop
on pc i plug it in, get that dialog, press connect and it says "checking usb connection" and then "connected", laptop network icon says "Network: Internet Access" :/

Ok yes sorry I don't have a sim card in Blackstone. This is what I got using Diamond 2. I couldn't find the settings on the Mac to connect though. It is time consuming at the moment so will look at it later. I am sure it will work.
Yes it does work and have made connection. You must use Bluetooth and connect to the device from computer first then connect to Internet Sharing. Finding the settings and connecting is a bit fiddly on the computer but it does definitely work. USB does not seem to work at all. Let me know if you need anything else.
no, that was all i needed to know, thanks if BT connection works, it'll do, and it gives me hope i'll be able to convince it to use usb as well
Macbook is supposed to be my second/travel toy, so net access is the only HTC related thing i need....i'm sure i could flash from it if i wanted to, and i don't use WMDC or Activesync anyway so i won't miss that, MS MyPhone is net based and practical :/

Yes...when plugged in via usb it utilizes the internet that is available in the pc and overrides the wi-fi. Unplug the usb cable and the wi-fi should come back on without any interaction on your part.

I'm a little outside of my comfort range here...but...I believe the third option, internet sharing allows the PC to use the HD2 as the internet source. This is referred to as tethering. I'll look forward to someone correcting me if I'm wrong.

Bingo, you are correct
It passes your data connection over to your PC via USB, just like the phone was a modem.
but what if you want to use the phone as the internet source from your laptop? I have wifi in my house and use hotspots when available but what if I have neither available. can I use the phone to connect my laptop to the internet?
if so HOW?
thanks

If your LT does not have a wifi card get one, a using a $30 wifi card is preferable to using a $500 phone as a wifi dongle ...[/QUOTE]
But, yes you can use your phone to access the internet on your laptop , as stated before it is called tethering , it uses the phones data connection not the phones wifi connection ...
The exception to that is , if you run the wifi router app on your phone, not plugged into usb, then you can connect your LT to your phone via wifi ...
So one more time ...
Internet Sharing over USB allows your LT to connect to your phones Data connection not its wifi , wifi will be disabled.
Internet Sharing using the Wifi Router on the phone turns the wifi into a Ad-hoc access point, so your LT can connect to your phone over wifi and use your phones data connection ..
---double post ---
my laptop does have 802.1bgn built into it. so at home, it automatically connects to my wireless router. this all works fine. I cannot afford to pay an additional $30 or whatever extra per month for a few minutes of internet access that I need from time to time from a wireless card/dongle or whatever.
if I take the LT to a hotspot (starbucks for example) once again it if fine.
if I go to a location that has neither then I would like to use the phone, either tethered or through bluetooth or wireless to get the laptop to connect to the internet throught the htc phone but I just cannot figure out how to do this.
I can connect the htc and the laptop through bluetooth or by the usb tethering but it will not connect to the internet and I cannot figure out what I need to do to get it to connect.
can you help me on this? thanks

Ok now we are getting somewhere, do you have a screen that pops up on your phone that asks you how to connect?
If not goto Settings>Connections>USB to PC , then check the bottom box "Ask me ..."
When you plug your phone into usb it should ask you if you want to use , ActiveSync, Diskdrive, or Internet Sharing, if you choose Internet sharing it should goto the data screen right after that and install the driver on the PC.
It then should connect .
So really your question should have been , "How do I share my phones data connection over USB?", or something like that .
..
It is a good idea to have the other connections on your laptop shut off, wifi , lan ...
that button has been checked but it only it says the first two active sync and disc drive but not internet connections. how do I get it to ask me that?

Well, to be honest, I only played with mine Stock for about 3 hours, so maybe someone with a stock one that has played with it more, will wade in here .....
pblocal, somewhere in your start menu, you will find an icon for "internet sharing", just run that, and make sure the two options are set to "USB" and "T-Mobile Data" (or whatever your data connection is named, it should be in the drop-down list), and then hit "connect" in the bottom left.. If you're connected via the ActiveSync option, it should then feed your 3G connection to your pc over the usb cable.
looked all over for that but could not find it.
could it be this phone does not have it? that would be LAME!
thanks for the help guys but I need more....
you can find the "Internet Sharing" app in the tools folder in the start menu.
it is in misc. settings on the phone last setting at the bottom

Internet access over USB

Hello All,
Does anyone know of a way for me to get internet/network access on my phone through usb to my pc?
This is possible on windows mobile with active sync. I want to use it like this in a couple of weeks when I go to a LAN party. I want to use an IRC chat program on my phone but won't have access to WIFI.
Whenever I search for this all I find is USB tethering to give my pc access to the phones data connection. I want it the other way around.
It's driving me nuts that I can't find such a simple feature that's been around for so long with windows mobile.
when you connect usb cable Tattoo ask you what to do, you need to choose third option: "Mobile network sharing". If you earlier set default action, go in settings>Conect to PC - here you check option "Ask me"....
all done...
That's the opposite way around. That to use the phone as a modem for the pc.
I want to use the PC's internet connection to browse on the phone.
Also don't get that option with custom froyo rom.
I could also use bluetooth PAN if could work out how to get that working.

Driver for ADB (?)

I'm still running WindowsMobile until I feel confident that all will work with Android. I just plugged the phone into my computer with Android running for the first time. I got a message asking me to install the ADB driver. Being afraid it'll screw up my ActiveSync connection in WM, I canceled the driver install. 2 questions:
1. Will ADB and WM AS play nice with each other?
2. Will Windows install the driver automatically, or do I have to find the drivers and download them?
Thanks in advance.
-Bob-
dont worry about ADB thats mainly for debugging (i'm no expert but in laymans terms thats what it's for) if you change the Android usb connection to USB drive (or something like that) it will connect as a usb stick...
oh and the installation wont screw up with WM activesync... as your PCwould treat your "windows mobile" phone and "android" phone as 2 completely different devices.

Thanks for your FAST reply! Under default connection type I currently have it set to "Charge only". "Disk drive" is also listed (which I think even I understand ). In addition there are 3 other settings. Can you explain them to me?
1. HTC Sync
2. USB tethering
3. Internet pass-through
Again, thanks.

htc sync havent tried
usb tethering is to share your phone's internet connection with you pc/laptop/mothership
Internet PAss Through allows you to connect to the pc's internet connection from the phone (opposite of usb tethering essentially)

I am on desktop but connected though WIFI, is there any hints for that?
Nimche, what OS are you running? My wifi was greyed out on my WinXP box but was fine on my Win 7 box. According to a pop up message when I tried on the WinXP box, MTM is only supported on Vista and up.
prathaban, I had the same problem. Try this. It worked for me ....although I'm having problems again and I haven't had time to trouble shoot.
On your phone "Forget" and trusted devices. Set your phone to MTM mode and plug in the phone to your computer via USB. Choose "Configure Device for Network Access". Follow the wizard. Keep the screen on your phone awake because you're going to be asked to pair your phone with your computer. When prompted pick "Pair". When you get the successfully configured screen on your computer close the wizard and unplug your phone. You should now see your computer name on your phone under the "Trusted Devices" screen. Click on it and select "Connect". In less than a minute your phone and computer should connect and appear in "My Computer" if you're using a PC. Once I get more time I'll try to mess around with it some more.

I am @ Win 7 X64 Ultimate. I uninstalled and re-installed and didn't work. I thought this is a nice feature to have to not working and there is nothing online that I could find about it...
I'm using Win7 64 too. Hmm...you know what. Try the method I mentioned above. I think it ignores PC Companion and just uses the Windows 7 MTM support. See if that works.

Actually problem is that my PC can't find the MTB driver. I have uninstalled all USB and restart and tried again with no luck. SE doesn't provide the files anymore on their support section?
Ok, this is annoying. I had this working. And now for the life of me I can't getting going. I'm having the driver issue too.
After spending hours with this, I couldn't solve it and gave-up.
Wow! I thought I'm the only one who is stuck with the issue, but seems like more and more people are having the issue?
Interesting! Hopefully someone can show some light on this!!
Yes, same problem. arc connected and driver was installed...after al long time, driver error!
same thing here...after installing the phone the driver was unsuccessfully updated so cannot connect...hopefully this will be fixed soon...hate it when things that are advertised do not work properly...
Do we have to look for he MTP driver? I was reading SE Support forum and then they support dude was asking a user if he or she has altered the FW, like rooting or unlocking bootloader? I did a clean install without root and it wasn't fixed...''
Even if you have done any of the above, you should still be able to use your phone with no problem. This seems to be a basic function of a phone why would it be taken away from you?
