CM6 Roms doesn't support other languages?? - Droid Eris Android Development

Hi. I am using CM 5.0.8 rom for my eris. I can choose other languages in the setting in this rom so that it shows other languages without any problem. However, CM6 doesn't seem to support other languages, especially eastern asian such as chinese, korean and japaneses etc. In CM 6 roms, foreign language letters appear like this □□□ on the web browser and cell phone itself. Isn't there any way to make these languages show up correctly on the phone??

I flashed CM6 rom and installed "morelocale". However, the letters appear to be □□□ on the phone. Do I have to put specific font in the phone to make it show up?? Even in the CM5.0.8, I can see and type other languages other than English without any apps and modification.
Anyways thank your concerning : )

Korean SMS

I am a noob so please don't jump all over me if it do this wrong or post in the wrong place. That being said and out of the way:
I am living in korea and bought my X1 a few days ago. I don't read korean to well so i flashed an english rom to it. Everything seems to work fine except the messageing service. I can send sms out but i can't get any responces.
I know that SKT uses it's own sms service or something like that...
So my question is: Is there a way to change only the language of the OS and leave eveything else the same?
I would like to keep the stuff that came with the Korean rom (sms service, korean dictionary the panels, etc.) just put the OS in english.
I'm in the same boat and I'd be much obliged if you could say what you found out, or if anyone else can offer some advice.
I bought the X1 in Korea. I love the phone, but like a lot of people here, I wanted an English language ROM. The problem is, like both of you guys have stated, MS-SMS doesn't work properly here. Sending works fine, but you cannot receive any messages.
After a lot of fiddling around, I think the problem has to do with the rilphone.dll file in the Windows directory. The solution is to extract the rilphone.dll file from the stock KOREAN rom and overwrite the file in the English rom. The problem with this is that with most of the downloadable custom roms, once you replace the file, the phone radio stops working, and you get no service at all. Perhaps the solution is to build a custom ROM and cook the rilphone.dll file from the Korean ROM into the custom ROM, but I don't have the skills or time to do it.
I actually got it working on a very old custom ROM, but the ROM itself was buggy and crappy so I ditched it. I think just overwriting the file in the old ROM worked because it didn't have any signed cert built in.
Anyway, I would also love to be able to solve this problem. I actually can read Korean, but the Korean ROM is super bloated with SK Telecom's crappy software and it is very slow.
EDIT: I would even be willing to pay someone a reasonable amount of money to solve this problem. I can provide the Korean rilphone.dll file too!
Does anyone have any advice??? Please???
Honestly I would pay as well. From what I can tell, the most "advanced" phones over here are the Xperia, the Omnia, and the Haptic 2. I can only assume the Omnia will have the exact same problems as the Xperia (being another WinMo phone) and I'm not really eager about the Haptic 2 since I can't seem to find any information at all about it (reviews, forums, addons, extensions, etc etc etc).
I misspoke earlier when I said I was in the same boat; I haven't yet bought a phone, but I'm in the market. I was just at a few shops yesterday messing around with these phones. And not being able to receive texts is (or alternately, not having an English OS) is a deal breaker.
I had this problem as well, except mine was receiving chinese text messages. What you have to do is go into the sms area and click Tools>Options.
It takes you to the screen with all your accounts. Tap on the SMS/MMS and you should check the "use unicode when necessary" box.
That's how I solved that problem
Unfortunately, with the current OS and SK Telecom network, the solution is not that simple. There is a group of Korean guys at a Korean Xperia forum working feverishly to solve this problem, and I understand they have made some progress. But the fix is still a long way off. The people here are probably more experienced and skilled at WinMo.
Yeah, Koream carriers have been deploying their own proprietary text mechanisms.
Long story short, there is a way you can use a cooked ROM with some helps from local hackers. It's a project to incorportate local carrier's structure into the old, good, usual MS-SMS.
http://cafe.naver.com/bjphone/232334
1. delete mms_filter.lnk from your startup folder
2. apply x1-mssms.cab
That's it.

Thanks for that link and the info. Does that mean that I can flash a custom English ROM, apply those two steps and be able to send and receive SMS in Korea?
SMS problem in Korea
Hi guys,
I found out this problem after i bought the X1 and changed the ROM to english, to sum up i am in the **** as you....
I am also ready to pay a reasonnable money to whom will find a solution to this problem. Friends sent me so many messages but they are still waiting for my reply...hehe
Please write me if any news, i am still searching on french, korean and english websites...
Thanks!
Korea is a great country, and very technologically advanced. But they seem to make it very difficult for foreigners. In the process, they also unintentionally make it difficult for their own citizens, because most Koreans I know would prefer to use MS-SMS over the crappy, slow, bloated SKT application.
In my case, I don't even need to be able to send SMS in Korean, although that would be great. As long as I could send English SMS, and receive and read English and Korean SMS, that would be fine. I'm hoping there will be a solution to this stupid problem soon.
Other than this issue, however, I love the X1. I recently bought an Omnia and it was OK, but when I found out the X1 was released in Korea, I ditched the Omnia immediately and bought the X1
Correct. I applied it today and am quite happy with it.
Please note it's still beta though.

Thanks for the response. Could you tell me which ROM you installed?
I'm still using the factory ROM, only changed SKT-SMS with MS one.
Other people who cooked their own ROM seemed to be okay.

Oh my God!! It worked! Thank you very much. There are still some bugs, but the functionality is there, so that's all I can ask for now.
Palmwangja, 감사합니다!
Unfortunately, although I can receive messages now, the characters are all square blocks, even with the Unicode setting checked. Any ideas?
EDIT: Just not working right. Even after installing Korean language support, for some strange reason, if someone sends me an SMS in English, I can receive the message but I get the square blocks as text. Can't receive Korean messages at all. Back to square one.
Can someone please upload x1-mssms.cab to rapidshare or email it to me?
I can't seem to login to the Naver board to download the file...I would really appreciate it!
UPDATE 1: Got the file. Thanks anyway. We'll see how the install goes. About to run on stock Korean ROM.
UPDATE 2: Seems to work fine on stock Korean ROM. Haven't tried MMS yet. The author of this hack appears to have posted a list of bugs with this first beta (including possible problems when sending/receiving messages while roaming) and indicates that he will post a second beta (which will probably be the final) soon.

The hack works fine on the stock Korean ROM. I tried it. I want to use MS-SMS, but the more important thing for me is using an English ROM. The hack doesn't work correctly in the English ROM, even after hacking the registry, linking fonts, etc. I can read Korean fine, but the Korean ROM really sucks. It is just slow and bloated.

Rogatsby, this is a pared-down Korean ROM...
Hope you will like it. quite fast, no additional garbage. ms-sms hack works greatly.

when i was untheming the jacmytouchskiv2.0 i noticed when i flashed the regular (themed version) that it had a black normal keyboard that typed in chinese. if you can find a rom with the english version of the cupcake vk you should be able to replace the chinese vk with the english one (well i assume you are looking for english but substitute english with whatever language if you are not lol) and it should work. i do not know where it would be located though. try pm-ing ccyrowski or cyanogen they should be able to tell you the location of it in a rom.

I don't know why you would call the htc one better... I quite hate it. The buttons are harder to press and it vibrates WAY too long. The default keyboard is much nicer -- clean and gives just a nice 'tick' of the vibrator on key press.
To install the default keyboard, copy its ".apk" file ("LatinIME.apk") into /system/app.

Swype comes with new languages!

Since there are new roms out, swype is usable in a few more languages such as English, Spanish (yes we had that!), Italian, German and French... Hopefully a few more will be added soon, but I think this is really good news! And it does work awesomely fluent and fast!
greetz
Have you had any trouble using the long press keys with teh new swype? (press and hold to get symbols and numbers)
I had to go back to the original swype, the new one just wouldn't do long press.
that is really strange. Long press works a the "new" swype on my hd2, even though i think they should integrate the multi-choice on long press!
OK, thanks. (I was running a test cook for a few days, not a final release, so it could be that it hadn't been configured properly.)
It works for me too, and I use both Spanish and English on a daily basis.
I think Swype is one of the coolest technnologies around, without a doubt. It was the reason I flashed a new ROM.
It's great! Works in French like a charm.
I can switch to English with two clicks when the need arises. On the minus side, it switches from the French AZERTY to QWERTY and I'm less familiar with the layout then. But it improves my typing so much that I can live with it

just to let you know mate... you didnt have to flash a new rom to have swype. You can install either the version ripped from Omnia 2, or the version ripped from T-Mobile US HD2 from the cabs floating around.

I think it has more to do with sensitivity, because if you try again....but be sure to hold your finger EXTREMELY STILL it will work.
I have noticed this myself. Even a fraction of a hair of movement is perceived as a movment, and the software acts accordingly, but if I slow down in that brief second to be very deliberate and steady, it works.

Yeah, that's true, but..
This one is newer (from the 2.10 TMOUS ROM) and I got all the other benefits of a new ROM to go with it, but in the end, it was the one feature I was really looking for more so than anything else, because the multi-lingual support is a thing I require.

I did give it a really good try, honest, with and without the screen sensitivity tweak. I use the earlier (dark coloured) swype all the time with not a problem, none at all. I've tried the new one a few times (the new one is pre installed on the rom I use, and i tried every time i hard reset for the first few times) and only maybe 1 press in 20 can i get the long press to work. I suspect it's actually a problem with the rom, not my method. I just gave up and put the old swype into my Autoinstal folder in the end, now i don't even see the new one. I don't need the languages anyway, so no biggie.

I'm very glad that you guys in xda are interested in my rom. Because of lack of time, i don't have enough time to post the WWE version of my ROM. I have add some features:
unread sms, mms, missed call in lockscreen
remove the seconde slidetab of lockscreen of cm branch's rom, and enhance the remain right part of slidetab of lockscreen, you can add your own application in right part of the tab
New way to hack original market. For none-US users like China can access the paid apps without affact the apn settings. As you know, the market enabler will affact apn settins, but this will not
add music control in status bar right of the plmn label
app2ext in system-level, whatever you self-install or market download apks will automatically install in ext partition if your sdcard has one
and many more other features
If you guys like it, i'll think about to post my rom in xda next time. I'm schedule to release a new one before Chinese Spring Festival day. If you like, please let me know, you can contact me: [email protected] (Gtalk or email) . That's it. Thanks

Thanks for your testing. Because of i only release in our region, i've remove the LatineIME.apk from my rom and add the official Google PinYin(For Chinese) in it. And PinYin IME from Google has different keyboard layout compare with LatinIME. Next time i'll release a WWE version and add LatinIME in it.
The widget you asked about is a product named:moji tianqi (moji weather) which is developed by a Chinese company for free. You can self-make themes and add to it. You can search "moji" in market, the name is "墨迹天气" in Chinese, This app has english translation, so you can use it. If you like the skin of the widget, i'll ask my parterner who make the skin to give you a copy.

It has a key to switch between Chinese and English, you can input english words easily through the IME. As you know, English characters are also common used in China and other Chinese-speaking regions. So english input is neccessary for us too

[Q] Add LTR support and fonts, possible?

Hey
I was reading on nookdevs.com and some posts on XDA about RTL support and supporting more languages (for apps like opera mobile and for books), specifically Hebrew. At this point when I browse to any Hebrew web site I can see only squares.
Is it possible? If it is possible, how can I do it?
/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf is the font of choice when all else fails.
Apparently it has Chinese but no Hebrew. (I'd never though to look.)
The DejaVu fonts have Hebrew, find them here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dejavu/files/
Copy whichever you want over to /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf
You will lose Chinese when you do that.

What about the RTL support? Do you have idea how do I make ir work?
I know that some guys here have Arabic installed, it's also RTL. But I don't know how they did it
edit:
Installed the fonts and it works great! Thank you.
All that is left is to find a Hebrew keyboard and RTL support.
I don't know anything about RTL but HTML with dir="rtl" gets reversed in Opera Mobile.
Neither have I looked into soft IMEs for other charsets.
However, if you want to use an external USB keyboard it's trivial to put the Unicode into /system/usr/keychars/qwerty.kcm.bin
