Korean SMS - XPERIA X1 General

I am a noob so please don't jump all over me if it do this wrong or post in the wrong place. That being said and out of the way:
I am living in korea and bought my X1 a few days ago. I don't read korean to well so i flashed an english rom to it. Everything seems to work fine except the messageing service. I can send sms out but i can't get any responces.
I know that SKT uses it's own sms service or something like that...
So my question is: Is there a way to change only the language of the OS and leave eveything else the same?
I would like to keep the stuff that came with the Korean rom (sms service, korean dictionary the panels, etc.) just put the OS in english.

I'm in the same boat and I'd be much obliged if you could say what you found out, or if anyone else can offer some advice.

I bought the X1 in Korea. I love the phone, but like a lot of people here, I wanted an English language ROM. The problem is, like both of you guys have stated, MS-SMS doesn't work properly here. Sending works fine, but you cannot receive any messages.
After a lot of fiddling around, I think the problem has to do with the rilphone.dll file in the Windows directory. The solution is to extract the rilphone.dll file from the stock KOREAN rom and overwrite the file in the English rom. The problem with this is that with most of the downloadable custom roms, once you replace the file, the phone radio stops working, and you get no service at all. Perhaps the solution is to build a custom ROM and cook the rilphone.dll file from the Korean ROM into the custom ROM, but I don't have the skills or time to do it.
I actually got it working on a very old custom ROM, but the ROM itself was buggy and crappy so I ditched it. I think just overwriting the file in the old ROM worked because it didn't have any signed cert built in.
Anyway, I would also love to be able to solve this problem. I actually can read Korean, but the Korean ROM is super bloated with SK Telecom's crappy software and it is very slow.
EDIT: I would even be willing to pay someone a reasonable amount of money to solve this problem. I can provide the Korean rilphone.dll file too!
Does anyone have any advice??? Please???

Honestly I would pay as well. From what I can tell, the most "advanced" phones over here are the Xperia, the Omnia, and the Haptic 2. I can only assume the Omnia will have the exact same problems as the Xperia (being another WinMo phone) and I'm not really eager about the Haptic 2 since I can't seem to find any information at all about it (reviews, forums, addons, extensions, etc etc etc).
I misspoke earlier when I said I was in the same boat; I haven't yet bought a phone, but I'm in the market. I was just at a few shops yesterday messing around with these phones. And not being able to receive texts is (or alternately, not having an English OS) is a deal breaker.

I had this problem as well, except mine was receiving chinese text messages. What you have to do is go into the sms area and click Tools>Options.
It takes you to the screen with all your accounts. Tap on the SMS/MMS and you should check the "use unicode when necessary" box.
That's how I solved that problem

Unfortunately, with the current OS and SK Telecom network, the solution is not that simple. There is a group of Korean guys at a Korean Xperia forum working feverishly to solve this problem, and I understand they have made some progress. But the fix is still a long way off. The people here are probably more experienced and skilled at WinMo.

Yeah, Koream carriers have been deploying their own proprietary text mechanisms.
Long story short, there is a way you can use a cooked ROM with some helps from local hackers. It's a project to incorportate local carrier's structure into the old, good, usual MS-SMS.
http://cafe.naver.com/bjphone/232334
1. delete mms_filter.lnk from your startup folder
2. apply x1-mssms.cab
That's it.

Thanks for that link and the info. Does that mean that I can flash a custom English ROM, apply those two steps and be able to send and receive SMS in Korea?

SMS problem in Korea
Hi guys,
I found out this problem after i bought the X1 and changed the ROM to english, to sum up i am in the **** as you....
I am also ready to pay a reasonnable money to whom will find a solution to this problem. Friends sent me so many messages but they are still waiting for my reply...hehe
Please write me if any news, i am still searching on french, korean and english websites...
Thanks!

Korea is a great country, and very technologically advanced. But they seem to make it very difficult for foreigners. In the process, they also unintentionally make it difficult for their own citizens, because most Koreans I know would prefer to use MS-SMS over the crappy, slow, bloated SKT application.
In my case, I don't even need to be able to send SMS in Korean, although that would be great. As long as I could send English SMS, and receive and read English and Korean SMS, that would be fine. I'm hoping there will be a solution to this stupid problem soon.
Other than this issue, however, I love the X1. I recently bought an Omnia and it was OK, but when I found out the X1 was released in Korea, I ditched the Omnia immediately and bought the X1

Correct. I applied it today and am quite happy with it.
Please note it's still beta though.

Thanks for the response. Could you tell me which ROM you installed?

I'm still using the factory ROM, only changed SKT-SMS with MS one.
Other people who cooked their own ROM seemed to be okay.

Thanks, but I think this only works on the stock Korean ROM. It won't work on an English ROM.

No, as far as I know, this hack is ROM-agnostic.

Oh my God!! It worked! Thank you very much. There are still some bugs, but the functionality is there, so that's all I can ask for now.
Palmwangja, 감사합니다!

Unfortunately, although I can receive messages now, the characters are all square blocks, even with the Unicode setting checked. Any ideas?
EDIT: Just not working right. Even after installing Korean language support, for some strange reason, if someone sends me an SMS in English, I can receive the message but I get the square blocks as text. Can't receive Korean messages at all. Back to square one.

Can someone please upload x1-mssms.cab to rapidshare or email it to me?
I can't seem to login to the Naver board to download the file...I would really appreciate it!
UPDATE 1: Got the file. Thanks anyway. We'll see how the install goes. About to run on stock Korean ROM.
UPDATE 2: Seems to work fine on stock Korean ROM. Haven't tried MMS yet. The author of this hack appears to have posted a list of bugs with this first beta (including possible problems when sending/receiving messages while roaming) and indicates that he will post a second beta (which will probably be the final) soon.

The hack works fine on the stock Korean ROM. I tried it. I want to use MS-SMS, but the more important thing for me is using an English ROM. The hack doesn't work correctly in the English ROM, even after hacking the registry, linking fonts, etc. I can read Korean fine, but the Korean ROM really sucks. It is just slow and bloated.

Rogatsby, this is a pared-down Korean ROM...
Hope you will like it. quite fast, no additional garbage. ms-sms hack works greatly.

T-Mo Upgraded WM6.5 Rom comes w/ Mobile Backup, Here's the cab!!

I have searched high and low for a cab file for this app. I got a T-Mobile software upgrade for my TP2. Cool, it was alright, nothing by comparison to NRG's ROM. I did however lose a few apps that were pretty cool: Co-Pilot,Visual Voicemail, etc.
The one that is of importance, though, is the Mobile Backup App. I have checked the threads on here and have ended up with nothing. I DO KNOW this file exists for this format of Windows Mobile. I tried to copy the correct files to my SD Card, but apparently am missing some and don't know what to look for anyway.
So, if somebody out there knows what's up with a cab or exe or files that I could extract from the stock rom, I would appreciate a little "heads up." Thanks in advance for any help.
EDIT: Thanks to SirPhunkee, we have a cab for any T-Mo users that is tested and works perfect on our TP2's. Here's his link to the cab

Did we already have you try this cab? I've handed it to a couple of people recently, can't remember if you were one of them
It's the tmo mobile backup that was extracted from the tmo HD2 ROM, and I think it works on the TP2...too Even if it's looking like it's running ok, make sure you test the sync in both directions (saving to their server and backing up from it) before you rely on it.
I still highly recommend myphone to accomplish the same tasks and more, but this is admittedly a lean solution, so definitely use whichever works best for you
THANK YOU!!

Hi Labarum....sorry about that, what thread is it you're mentioning (the 2.5 sense cab thread)? I must have missed that opportunity, my apologies
Yes, that HD2 thread is where I found this copy, but I thought it was the same as WarlockW's posted cab (which didn't have as handy as this copy). I suspect that they're not different by phone model, but rather by WM version...but I'm just guessing there

You have to call T-Mobile and get them to set this app up on your "plan." What I mean is, it IS free to add to you payment plan, but you actually have to call customer care and get them to add it, but like I said it's FREE. Don't ask me why, but they just have it set up that way. I had the same problem, and it took like 10 minutes from dialing their number to having the software work. It's apparently a matter of account settings or something that they have to tweak.

I am running the new NRG ROM in my sig, but IT won't allow me to install mobile backup to this version. I haven't tried the newest ROM from the 13th, but I sense it is gonna have the same problem.

ok, this is just a wilda$$ guess...but isn't it desirable in some cases (like to correct MMS pic size issues) to have some agent ID in your registy other than what the phone actually is? Maybe possible that NRG bakes that in? Or, maybe it just only acceps a certain specific range of WM versions?

It's a key somewhere in the registry that indicates what model of phone it is (independent of the IMEI), I believe it's used to identify it to the network for things like what size MMS files the phone can handle, etc...and I'm just surmising this becasue I recall that's where I saw the references to it. So, I would probably suggest looking in any threads related to MMS size issues, you'll probably see someone make a reference to a regedit or cab that makes that change, you can reverse-engineer the rest from there I guess.
I rarely go through any of the forum sections other than the rhodium boards and the Tmo HD2 section, so you can probably confine your search to those places if it helps. I'll keep my eyes open for it too.
Still no luck, sir phunkee. I am hoping that when I flash this newest NRG Rom, maybe I will have some luck, but to be honest, I am kinda tired of flashing his new ROM's cuz, they are "supposedly" faster or better, etc.
We will see, but hopefully someone will have a cab or link that could lead me somewhere.
Josh's Black http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572938 came with Mobile Back Up, Visual Voicemail, Blockbuster, My Account, and the proper keyboard (after initial startup) cooked into the Rom... great for T-mo users like us... does not have the newer tabs, but I find I don't use those much anyway!
I installed the Full Version...
Now if I could just get rid of the transparent slide and make it stock again? (just for clarification... not slider or icons)
Many Thanks Guys! Been looking for this.

HD2: Not for texting! D:

you'd think HTC would have thought these devices through a little more, yeah? NO.
seeing as how i can't send a text message without a five second delay. i can't receive a text message without my phone freezing for ten. and god forbid i try and view one message while receiving another one, right?
also consider: the 1ghz processor, 16gb harddrive, 1024mb rom (on some devices), and this thing can't go five minutes without a hiccup? what the hell? D:
maybe my phone is just a screwed copy, but **** n' seriously. i just want to be able to have eye candy that operates decently. i thought that's what the HD2 was for, but it was a huge let down for me.
now, until HTC gets their crap in order and creates a better text engine, or someone ports android over to the HD2, guess what guys? we're F&%KED.
so, enlighten me, xda friendlies. are there additional text engines for the HD2? different programs to use, for faster typing and flawless send/receive features? cause until then, i'm inserting my sim card into my iPhone, as much as i hate apple itself with a burning passion, at least it texts somewhat better.
cause seriously, if i can't even stand to use my own phone, what the hell is the point?
intelligent responses only, go take your immaturities somewhere else.
Have you tried a Custom ROM?
At least try the new upgrade
If your not ready for custom ROM (like me) try the upgrade.
Worked for me, resolving apparently (its still early) all of my previous problems with the phone- like yours.

great machine. too buggy of an OS. not saying others are flawless, but i'd rather not have the only flaws in it related to the major thing i do with the phone. and i have upgraded to the rom that t-moUS release just a week ago. it's still pretty slow for me, considering my fingers move too fast for the keyboard to pick up on. i've already registry edited the lengthymessage thread, making it so the cache is always enabled, and somewhat speeding the system up a little bit when viewing the message itself. but typing is still very slow, and it's driven me up three walls, and back again.
does the text system and keyboard operate faster when SenseUI is disabled, using only the homescreen? cause if so, maybe i can deal with that, too. sense is nice, but not everything.
Try the upgraded ROM. I didnt have that much trouble but it has improved immensely! I can run CHT Again!
Yeah, try the upgrade. I am a major texter, and the new client works perfectly for me.

i would just divert back to 2.10 which you can get from xmoo's stock ROM thread. 2.13 had me to the point where i wanted to throw my phone at the wall. its incredibly easy to downgrade. an although i gotta be deleting txt after every 20 from a contact.. id rather deal with that then have an extremey slow freezing 2.13 messaging app. i agree with you that its shameful that such a hardware capable phone has such a ****ty messaging app

thank you for seeing this as well, my friend. but keep in mind. i'm a texter. i like keeping my messages. i have a 516 message chain with my girlfriend. and i eventually clear them out, but not willingly. i shouldn't have to clean out my text messages to make my phone operate smoothly. so a good suggestion, but not for me. thanks =]

okay so, i tried out the energyrom with cookie's hometab, and the rom works quite well. ocassionally freezes and needs a reboot, and i wish they could fix that, but it's in progress, so i'm not gonna complain too much. i downloaded the ADDON text message program he included under the addons and fixes link, and the messaging is soo much more fluid. no delays, doesn't matter how many messages i have, and i like it. it's missing the spell check feature, which i liked alot, but i can just be more careful with my spelling, and it'll work for now.
but i have yet another problem! when i receive a mms, the message comes in suuuper small, and it's not the picture either. i would fwd a 260kb photo to myself, and it'll come in at 5kb. not cool, i need that fixed. and also, the mms messaging says the limit is 300K. why is that? i thought t-mobile upped the mms size to 1024K i need that fixed, too. so if anyone has some good intel, please, comment this thread and help us all out!

Phone buttons cant keep up, or will lock up.

NEW HTC UPDATE for SMS enhancement

Hi everybody,
I read a lot about problems with the sms function, and I just noticed on HTC's website they have posted an upgrade for this problem in particular....
I saw I couldn't post the link here but you know how to get to the upgrade...
Just go to the HTC website and select the support section.
So I just thought i'd bring it to everybody's attention...my eyes are like a hawk attuned to HTC lol
Best of luck.

Can anyone tell me what problems these updates actually address? On the HTC website it just says SMS stability but doesn't explain more
We lost our files with the updates??
no no data will be erased, it's only a hotfix!
This hotfix will be unnecessary if you upgrade to the new ROM instead.

New Asian ROM is version 1.36.707.3.
Old ROM version is 1.07.707.1.
I check my HTC hd mini, its ROM is 1.07.707.1 (85429) WWE
I am a little bit blur about this ROM update, can you pls tell me:
1. The difference/advantages of NEW ASIAN ROM vs OLD ROM
2. Can I download this new ROM from internet
Thank you & best regards

ROM update is like firmware update. They try to root out bugs or improve performance from the older version.
Yes, you can download the new ROM from htc.com. go to support link. You need to provide your phone serial number, just to check if this ROM is compatible to your device.

Thank you. I'm downloading now.
Best regards,
I am having really big issues with SMS handling.
I do have the 1.36 update and also have the SMS-hotfix.
I have imported aproximately 3000 SMS via MyPhone.
When replying to an SMS it takes on average 5-6 seconds before I can start writing. Is this normal? If a contact has alot of SMS's, then it takes even longer...
Apparently, HTC Messages is designed for less than 100 messages only.
I've lodged my complaint on HTC Support.
I encourage you, and everybody, to register complaints of this dismal messaging app.
It's the only way to get HTC's attention. And force them to do something about it.
I just got an answer from HTC support. Appearently all SMS, etc is stored in internal memory, so the more stuff you got in there, the slower the device gets. Guess I just have to start deleting...
Err, ah....
I was thinking of upgrading the ROM to the 1.36 and went to the HTC download page. There I found these versions available: Greece: 1.36.482.1, Portugal: 1.36.410.1, France: 1.36.406.1, Denmark: 1.36.403.1, Italy: 1.36.408.1, Europe: 1.36.401.1, Spain: 1.36.412.1, Russian Federation: 1.36.411.1, Sweden: 1.36.413.1, Germany: 1.36.407.1, Nederland: 1.36.404.1, East Europe: 1.36.479.1, Norway: 1.36.409.1. So what's the difference and how do I know which one to choose as I am not in one of the country's specifically named. I guess I could go for "Europe" but I must admit to being a tad confused.
Can somebody inform me?
Thanks
which country are you actually in?

That's not it. HTC messaging is slow even if you have 30 messages. Normal Windows Mobile phone should handle several thousands of messages, before there will be any slow down. My previous phone, Asus P750 with only 64mb ram, can handle in excess of 20,000 messages, before it started to have a slight slow down. If HTC can't handle 20,000 messages, that's ok. We're not asking that much. But at least it should be able to handle 5,000 or 6,000 without any slow down. At the worst of the worst, it should be able to handle 3,000. Like any other windows mobile phone can.
SO don't swallow that BS explanation of HTC. It's wrong. There's something wrong with HTC messaging. THey'll have to admit it first, before we can expect them to dig in and root out the bugs.
HTC customer support is very LAZY. Damn TOO LAZY. Always trying to squeeze into an easy way out. We should not let them get away with this.

Looking for a rather basic WinMo 6.5.3/6.5.5 ROM

Before people tell me to search the forums, that's what I've been doing for the longest time, trying every ROM on the Vogue forum. And before you tell me to try Android, I've done that too, and while I like it, I prefer Windows Mobile on this particular phone at the moment, but may put Android on it again sometime in the future.
The closest that I've found is NagROM V0.19 Touch, which is just a touch too basic. I'm looking for something like that, but with M2D and M2D Customiser, the HTC Cabs and Ringtones, the EZInput keyboard like in NFSFan's ROM, and Office 2007 or 2010. While I like the ROMs that come with other programs cooked in, such as Total Commander and PHM Registry Edit, I prefer the ROM coming without them so that when I go to install an updated version, I don't run into a problem. Too many times I've had problems installing a newer version of a program when it comes up telling me it has to uninstall the previous version, but can't, sometimes leaving me with just the old version, or both versions.
And before anyone says to cook my own, I've looked into guides, tried cooking my own, and the past few times I've tried, it wouldn't even boot up for the first time after flashing. I've tried numerous kitchens, some of which are supposed to be basic ones, perfect for beginners, but end up with one of a few problems: Not compatible with 64-bit windows, virus scanner blocks a crucial part, not meant for the Vogue, etc.
Basically what I'm asking is: Are there any basic ROMs with nothing more than M2D (and HTC cabs and Ringtones, and M2DC), EZInput, and Office Mobile 2007/2010 cooked in, or can someone HELP me with trying to cook my own (so that I can have it preconfigured for Verizon, MMS working and GPS set up)?
Hey, Ill cook you up a rom with the things you want. Should be done here in a little while!
Hey - that's a dev for you, man. Ask and ye shall receive!

Haha, wow. I never expected someone to actually make it fer me! I'll have to try it out tomorrow as it's late now. Also, what kitchen do you use, Barogi? I still do plan on learning. (I'm a mix of hands on learning and being shown/flat out told what to do for the first time or three lol). Also, I assume it is set up as a Generic ROM (without the provisioning cab, MMS cab and settingsh, and Registry settings for GPS)? Also, as time goes more things come to mind to be cooked in (hence wanting to learn how to cook a ROM personally, and slowly becoming less basic ) lol. Still, thanks, majorly. I'll let you know how it works out when I try it tomorrow =3
Oh, and what version of EZInput is cooked in? I know I said "like the one in NFSFan's ROM," but that's only because I was unsure of the version (which I know now is 1.5.)

I use ppckitchen.org Buildos 2.0.0 And yes it is generic meaning you will need a carrier cab, Once you do install your carrier cab everything should work such as mms and gps. As for Ezinput i actually use a newer version than Nfsfans its (pcarvalho_ezInput_2.1_QVGA). If you want some help with cooking your own rom, just install ppckitchen buildos 2.0.0 since thats the only one ive ever used and know how to use and then send me a message on whatever you need some help with! Also if you want something changed in the rom i have already made for you before you get a chance to build your own, just let me know and ill do it.
EDIT: Had posted the wrong link to ppckitchen its supposed to be ppckitchen.org not .com
Hope you like it.

PPCKitchen BuildOS 2.0.0 is what I was using as well. I've used enough generic ROMs to know how to get it all working, so that's simple to do. Was just curious about that. I've gotten one ROM working through there, but somehow ended up with the Windows Mobile 6.1 splash screen (even though I changed it lol.) I'll try out your ROM, and I"ll keep playing with BuildOS. Hopefully I can get the file size down, and figure out how to cook in my own things, not just what's listed on the build menu lol. I'm kind of a hands on learner, kind of need to be shown multiple times, so playing around with it (though will take MUCH longer) SHOULD help me figure it out, but I'll keep in mind to PM you if I have any questions.

Ok great!
Alright, I'm trying out the ROM, and so far it looks great. Just one slight thing... I see you put in PHM RegEdit (an add on program I said I prefer installing myself so that when I go to update it I don't run into problems lol) Other than that, so far it looks perfect. Now if I could figure out how to cook a ROM where it isn't bigger than the stock, with just a few add in things as I think of them that I use regularly (and cook it as a Verizon specific ROM) then yay. Time to start playing with BuildOS while setting up my phone again lol

Ahh sorry about that Its just one of those programs that i figured you might want but perhaps had forgotten to ask for
Also i realized that after i had uploaded the rom that i forgot to add the reg edit to fix the 2016 date error on sms messages... Not sure if that affects you on Verizon, because i do not get it on Bell.
If you want... I can give you a list of the necessary things you should put in your own roms to make it function to its fullest.. like all the necessary bluetooth items and such?

It's alright, I think PHM is one of the ones that can be updated even if it's cooked in without any problems. And yes, the 2016 problem will affect me on Verizon. I had it happen to me on NagROM before, but already had the fix downloaded (someone made it into a cab) so I installed it to be on the safe side. As for the list of things to make it function to the fullest, please do. And if there is another way to contact you other than on here, can you tell me in PM? I'd like to contact you off of here for help with cooking a ROM. I've tried again, and it wouldn't even finish building this time. Out of about 8 times of cooking a ROM, it succeeded only once, but I forgot to compress it (this was before you made this ROM for me).
Also, slight problem, and quick question.
The problem is on M2D. The music tab. It says that it can't play the audio file and opens Windows Media Player. I haven't found anything on this yet and had it happen to me on a few ROMs. If it can't be fixed, that's fine, i can just take off the music tab (because I don't always slide along the bottom, I'll use the D-pad at times, and if other people play with my phone)
The question... Where can I find the default background for M2D? I changed the background using M2DC so it'll be on all the tabs, but you can't see the white text, so I wanna change it back until I find a different background.

Ill send you a pm with my cell number. Also I have always gotten that message when trying to use music tab. I dont think a fix has ever been mentioned... I know that it usually defaults to using audio manager and not the windows media player, perhaps that could be the problem?
The background... I think that you have to back up the default in M2DC before changing it in order to get it back, so that you can reload it. Just so you know, I don't use Manila at all on my phone, so im not quite sure how to fix many things on it. And remember that most issues are do to the fact that Manila is not made for our phones and has been ported over. But I will try my best to help you out.

Yeah NFSFAN always cooked Audiomanager into his roms... you could put it in your own as well and it probably would stop the error.

[Q] HTC Trophy CDMA Chinese SMS Problem

I'm a HTC Trophy CDMA user in China,The phone can not send Chinese SMS,but the English SMS is correct. How to solve this problem?3Q.
When Use CDMA,I send Chinese SMS is correct, but the other who received is incorrect.
It's all right when use WCDMA.
Install from marketplace connection setup and run it.
Connection Setup will help, but you need to install Chinese language support. DFT is testing a Freedom rom for CDMA/Verizon Trophy (codename SparkW). This rom has built in support for Chinese language, and may help you.
Another option is to install the Chinese language .cab files. This might give you Chinese input for SMS (I do not know how to do this, however).
If you are interest in testing the beta Freedom rom for Verzion Trophy, you need to private message user mwang on this forum. You will also need to install HSPL on your phone so you can install this rom image.
If you need to install HSPL on your phone, DFT's official website may be a better place for you to look for information (since it is in Chinese). Ask any questions you have about your SparkW phone in this forum. If you tell them your problem, they might be able to help you better (plus you won't need to talk in English ).
Actually, I have run into this problem also. It seems that Windows Phone simply does not support unicode characters in SMS in CDMA mode. When I switch my phone to GSM mode and start typing an SMS with unicode characters, it shows the correct limit of 70 characters. Changing the phone back to CDMA and typing an SMS with unicode shows an incorrect limit of 160 characters.
If anyone has any further insight on this, I would love to hear it. Especially frustrating, since I am on Verizon, so obviously stuck with CDMA. Even more frustrating is the fact that it worked fine on my old Windows Mobile...
Weird? So Verizon supported SMS correctly with Chinese characters before, and it works fine with GSM? That is odd. Maybe I'll switch to Chinese or Japanese and see if those languages have issues too. I wonder if the DFT rom is having this issue too?
It quite possibly could be an issue with Verizon's operator package too. Do GoldC users have this problem?
Well, in my case I am using Ukrainian, not Chinese, but yes, it worked fine on my old phone. I haven't actually tested sending the message via GSM, since I don't have a SIM card handy, but it shows the correct limit, which implies that it will work correctly. And on top of that I can receive messages in Ukrainian from other people just fine.
I'm starting to think that perhaps Verizon disabled this in their radio for the Trophy? Is that possible?
It could also be a side affect of the phone being a "world phone" and only allowing certain functions while using GSM. SMS is standardized, so it could work fine in CDMA mode. What mode is your phone in?
We know it gives two-byte characters the correct limit in GSM mode, but is this an issue only in CDMA mode, or went set to "Global" or both?
I usually leave the phone in CDMA mode, but I did some testing and this same behavior also occurs in Global mode. I have to explicitly set it to GSM for it to give me the correct character limit.
I wonder if this is Mango issue or just some silly settings issue. The HTC Arrive is a CDMA only phone, so I wonder if it has this same issue. I know they are having some sort or SMS issues too.. so it may be related to CDMA+SMS period. :/
I've tried a number of methods, such as modifying the registry, add some value, like HKLM_MIME_CODEPAGE, but still can't solve the problem. All normal GSM, CDMA is not working properly.
Perhaps this issue would be better off being posted on MSDN, to see if its a general issue, or something stupid that all CDMA carriers are overlooking.
I will be more than happy to post it to MSDN, but I'm just not sure where exactly to post it. The Windows Phone developer forums? Those seem to be geared towards application developers. I presume this would be something that concerns radio developers? So perhaps going through HTC?
I'm not that familiar with all of this to this detail, so any thoughts on how I can further pursue this are most welcome.
FYI - there is no change in behavior regarding this issue after installing the recent firmware update, based on my tests.
Well, I finally contacted HTC support about this issue, and I got the following reply:
Thank you for patiently waiting while we found the information you needed about the unicode characters being sent through text messages. There will be an update that will come out for your phone very soon that should remedy this issue.

It's good at they are at least aware of it now. I hope the update comes soon!
Perhaps not too surprising, but the HTC update that came out today did not fix this problem - hopefully the next one!
