Screen to sensitive for me. - Droid X General

Is their a control that I can adjust the touch sensitivity?
Maybe I drink to much coffee but a "flick" that wouldn't ruffle the fur on a flea sends me to places I don't want to be.
I like Swype but sometimes a mere sentence or password can be a chore.
Ps This phone is great!!

I haven't seen a sensitivity adjustment.
But just a suggestion, Maybe try a screen protector?
I like the sensitivity myself and don't use a protector.

Coming from a resistive touchscreen to the dx makes it seem very sensitive to me, but I'm not sure if it objectively is or not.

It is sensitive but not overly sensitive. That is for sure.

Lifespan of the screen?

Hi guys,
I'm curious. What is the lifespan of the HTC Touch HD's screen? I know it's a seemingly random question, but I was just wondering. I tend to keep my devices for a very long time so this would be valuable information in helping me decide if this is the phone for me.
Cheers.
Well, I have noticed that the screen is a bit scratch sensitive as the top layer is made of plastic. Screen responsiveness is mediocre and clarity and picture quality are good to very good. Overall I like the screen. =]

Antrak,
Thanks for that input. I appreciate it. However, I was wondering about the touch screen's duration, as in, how many years before the touch screen will crap out on you. Any idea?
Also, the screen's responsiveness can be fixed by using a registry editor and looking for the responsiveness setting. I think you can hop on over to the X1 to see what the registry mod is.
Cheers.

No problem. Ah in that way. Well I think that if you take good care of your device and handle it carefully, the touch screen won't fail any sooner then other components of the device will. I still have a device that's way over it's preservation date and the screen still functions the way it's supposed too, so I don't really think you will have any trouble with that.
I did the registry settings and tweaks, I still find it mediocre though. In my mind I put it in this list -Touch HD Mediocre - Touch Diamond 2 Good - Capacitive Excellent -.
But thing is, the bigger the screen is on a resistive screen type device, the more pressure you need to give, not incredibly much but still.

Thank you for that input. You've given me confidence in wanting to get this phone now (I would have gotten it already, but I was scammed about 2 months ago and I had to save again)! How is the usability of the phone using fingers alone? How often would you need to use the stylus?
Cheers.

Too bad to hear that you've been scammed!
It is a really great device, I loved it from the moment it came out of it's nice black box.
I actually never use the stylus, and I have decently fat fingers. With a screen this size, I have no problems whatsoever navigating through the windows mobile 6.1 screens and I can't understand how some people actually use a stylus on this thing. For me, it's -completely- (including small 6.1 buttons) finger friendly.
agree with antrak =) it is a wonderful device =) I still use the stylus at times though, mostly for the transcriber input mode =) never recall any time where I was forced to use the stylus instead of fingers =)

Well, that is perfectly fine with me. Not-as-responsive-screen > Eventually-cracking-case.
May I ask where you blokes purchased your Touch HD from (US folks). Also, do you need any sort of data plan to be able to use navigation software? I ask because Im not sure if aGPS systems require that or do you only need to pay for Navigation software? I'm also going to guess that using your phone as a GPS-System will eat the battery faster than you can say "The THD is teh sheetz!" ?
Cheers.

Some video from CNN :D

Just got this in my work email from my Sprint rep
http://money.cnn.com/video/technology/2010/04/19/t_tt_4g_sprint_evo.cnnmoney/
CNN did an article on 4G and they used the pre-released EVO which means it will be here really soon I hope.. pretty cool check it out

What's with the random audio transitions that pop up?
Regardless of that, it's nice to see an EVO in action.
That video makes the screen look HORRIBLE tons of glare, and it attracted prints like crazy :O

I know that the HTC Droid Incredible doesn't have the same multitouch problem as the N1/Desire. So maybe the same could be said for the EVO as well.
Those optical cables must have some crazy bandwidth to support internet for that many people... yeah that demo of the phone was horrible. still, it's the best phone as of now, cant wait, im getting it first day

From what I can gather, it looks like:
Angle touch is -- touching the device at an angle... Instead of using a stylus to go straight down (90 degrees) to accept, it supports angle touching..
Size touching - it measures the size of what is touching the screen. So you touch with a thumb vs a stylus, it measures the surface areas of the two.
I could be wrong though..

that is just silly for it not to do this... who would use the stylus or finger or anything in a 90degree angle? It is normally the point of contact that it registers. So I am guessing there is something else to this, and refers to some future benefit, but I cant think of any.
all just speculation on my part.

Not necessarily. I don't mean an exact 90 degree angle, but rather, a straight touch, and not picking up other parts of the screen...
But you're right, all speculation.
I thought it meant it can sense the angle at which something touches it. So it can tell if it's coming in at 45 or 90 degrees... Could be wrong though.
Sense angle?
How could it do that? A point of contact is just a point correct? To determine angle you would have to go through layers of detection right? A point on top layer compared to a point on a subsequent layer could determine angle, or a camera (multiple/3d) could sense angle, but how could a pad sensing a point (multiple points) on its surface determine angle?

Well... My guess is they do it by the diameter and shape of the sensed finger. It's not actually just a point. It's usually circular and they find the center point and use that. Your touch is generally far bigger than 1px. That's also how they can tell how hard you push down. Harder you push, the bigger the diameter. If you push on an angle, the shape distorts as well. It's not perfect, but I've seen it used. I forget where though.

you know what i hate?

that when my screen is closed and the keyboard is hidden, where ever i touch on the screen the screen and the entire top part of the phone moves when i touch the screen. its like my screen isnt tight. im not talking about the hindge opening, because obvioulsy what horse has been beaten to a pulp, but the screen itself. i apologize for the rant, but i just want to see if anyone else has the hate as well. only thing wrong with the phone!
I do not have this problem. You probably have a defective unit.
your screen isnt loose just a tad? i might just be over thinking it. i mean i just can feel the the screen just move a little when i type on it.
I too have never had this issue...you should take a look into that.

Just pushed on my screen MUCH harder than I would in normal use and it didn't so much as budge. Think you might have a bad device.
Yep me too,.... My hinge is definitely loose but there is no movement whatsoever when the device is shut.
Warranty!!!
Mine does that too. My wife's does not and my original one which I warrenteed already didn't either. But my replacement does.
The plastic casing must be slightly warped enough to misalign the little bumpers.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Yea I have this to, really annoying. I had one of those clip on cases on my phone for a while , it might have been that which made it loose.
It depends on which way you are holding it when you push on it, if you hold it perpendicular for example it has this issue.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Mine will rock sideways if you try (and if you're tapping around on screen you MIGHT feel the gap on the left side change), it's not all that much though - and the 3 G2s I've used were all like that.
yeah, thats what i mean. like the way the hinge was made, it doesnt quite sit the phone flat on the keyboard piece. im glad i see other peoples g2s have it as well and im not the only one. its mainly when the phone is in portrait and the top left part of the screen is touch it rocks just a tad.
My condolences to all who have these petty little problems..and i mean that..no sarcasm at all here...

Sarcasm noted...
For a phone with such great build quality/feel, something like the OP's problem (and mine) is fairly annoying. This feels like an executive class phone...for the first few weeks. It is a sweet phone/device. Too bad it's not perfect like my Vibrant, errr Nexus S, err.... Still waiting for the "perfect" phone.
lol
I was hanging out on Slickdeals and saw all the G2 love (yes, people really loved getting their phone free on cyber monday).. then a thread came up for the HTC shift.. and all the sprint guys were bashing it.
It's the same damn phone.
Still makes me laugh.
Best phone I have ever owned without a doubt, not a huge fan of the Z hinge but without it the keyboard wouldn't be so flush and ergonomic, its a small price to pay for superior user-friendliness
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I have to agree with all the DZ/G2 love here. It's a fantastic phone. Aside from VERY minor issues with the hinge tightness (though, there seems to be some 'hardware hackers' working on that! , this phone is as close to perfect as I can imagine. I *love* having a hardware keyboard, and it's waaay better than the G1. (Though a ctrl/alt key would be nice for ssh sessions!).

Anyone else not been able to use this phone because of its ergonomics

I had a GS II but had to get rid of it because it caused me so much hand pain. I should declare that I do have existing problems with my hands but the Arc doesn't really cause me any problems. I think it was a combination of its width and the squareness of the design that did for me. I have tried out the Sensation and though that is only a bit narrower it seemed much easier on my hands, I reckon because it's a more rounded design.
I thought it was a good device but I am not going to keep using a phone that caused me that much constant pain.
First one i have come across though as it is larger i did recommend a young lady to hold it before buying .http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

It is a good device, just not for you. If you knew you had problems with your hand you should have spent more time with the phone before you bought it. It's like buying a car you never sat in and complaining about the driving position.
how exactly did it cause pain??? how can holding a phone hurt? there are things that are just beyond my comprehension.
Nope, i have a mans hand.
For me the phone is too slim and slippery, but silicone cover did the trick and it steadily fits my hand no problem.

So have I. Which makes me think it's more the design than the size. The Arc isn't that much smaller but is narrower and a much better thought out ergonomic design IMO.
By the way I should have said I have a form of nerve issue with both hands.

Hehe I'm not saying that there's something wrong with the phone, but I can't reach the top left side of the screen one handed and barely reach the middle left side. That being said I wouldn't change that beautiful big screen for anything, so I can live with.

It's a fraction too wide for me, but I can live with it just. I've suffered from a bit of RSI in the past so I can imagine how it might hurt if you have similar issues (carpal tunnel etc).
The SE Arc next to this feels much nicer in the hand as it's about 5-8mm narrower - yet still sports a 4.2" display. Maybe that would suit better.

What exactly is the advantage to having that "ring" (for lack of a better term) around just the face of the phone? It seems like it would be more useful around the back of the phone.

There is what is called "bumper cases" which are pretty much just a ring to protect the corners and make a small gap between the screen and the floor or any level horizontal surface so if you drop it, it will hopefully not break your phone screen or corners. This one fails a bit at the later but I imagine keeps the corners slightly protected.
Ok

My Dad actually works in the cellphone case business so I may actually have some good insight, the one real popular feature as of late is the incorporation of a wallet into the case. So if you could work that with a bumper in an otherwise then accessory that would be pretty awesome
