Guys, finally I took a decision to leave the X10i and will buy a new Motorola Milestone ...
I took this decision after lot of studies and due to the following:
- Milestone has a great and stable 2.1 Version from Android.
- Milestone has a Multitouch function.
- Milestone screen not so bad (3.7 inch) also it has an advantage over the X10i which is dedicated VGA processor.
- X10i Camera is far beyond any other phone (especially in the capturing rate), but Milestone camera is 5MOP with dual LED Flash (which works automatically, and this is a benefit over SE X10i).
- Have a GREAT Arabic language support in Messages, Browser, Office files.... some guys mentioned that it has full localization support but I always use the English menu.
- Display use the full 16M color.
FINALLY, it has a GREAT Physical Keyboard....
What do you think guys, are you going to change or will wait for 2.1 in Q4?
Milestone is a bad option...........Better wait for Droid 2 (Milestone's predecessor) or better get samsung galaxy S.......

why? do you know that it has dedicated processor for the VGA which doesn't consume the RAM while using the mobile in Games for example. I believe there is such a comparison on You Tube will search for it and bring it back
i think milestone is a downgrade.
the processor is only 600mhz. just wait for about 2 months you'll have 2.1 on x10 and the dev team might give you 2.2 even earlier if they able to make some progress in hacking bootloader.
if you are getting a new phone it's fine, but changing a x10 into milestone i will say it's not a wise option. maybe a dumb one.

Pretty weird choice. If you want to switch, get Galaxy. Milestone's processor is a major major drawback.
well.. if you want to change then... change. BUT:
As i see this everyones problem with the X10 is the Android 1.6, but this is going to be fixed later this year.
I any other aspect the X10 is in my opinion the best phone around.
I will wait for the upgrade and maybe the devs will succeed, and we'll have custom roms for our X10.after that sky is the limit.
I loocked at the milestone but i realy do not like it. If you ask me it has a ugly design. , and a smaller screen.
So i stick with the X10, for now.
Nothing to see here, wrong window.
and a locked bootloader that hasn't been cracked for 7-8 months!!
I looked into the Milestone before I got my X10. It's just too slow, 600mhz cpu and it's got way too little RAM for my taste, only 256MB.
Speaking of RAM, does anyone know if there's any dedicated VRAM in the X10? I've read reports of it having 128MB but I can't find any definitive info on it.

if you referred back to my previous post, the processor in X10i is consumed in both graphical and non-graphical functions while Milestone has dedicated processor for graphical actions and non-graphical actions will use the full 600MHZ
please read more on this issue, I still have the X10 but SE are too slow in releasing the updates (even the last one , the minor one is not released here in Egypt) while Milestone was released late 2009 with Android 2 and get an 2.1 update and planned to have 2.2 official update...

You knew what X10 lacks when you made decision to buy it Milestone was even released before X10 & You should consider it before buying X10
For me, Milestone can never be in my considration X10 is far better than Milestone for me. Good luck with your choice <3

You're not quite right on the cpu/gpu bit. The Snapdragon chip has both a 1ghz arm cpu as well as a dedicated AMD chip running at 600mhz iirc.

That was part of it, but I recall reading somewhere that the total on the board is 512MB, 384MB for the system and 128MB for the graphics.

Perhaps you're right since i never got a hand to milestone, all i know is milestone has a 600MHZ processor. But, changing a phone not that great compare to what you having is not a wise choice, that's what i meant.
By the way about RAM of x10 i am also quite confused, some says 384MB(limited by donut to 256MB right now), some says 256MB+128VRAM i don't know what to believe

Milestone has an underclocked CPU of 550MHz though the CPU is of 600Mhz.. But it can be overclocked like "crazy" to 1+ GHz
I'm sticking with X10i, however, want to see what comes of Sony Ericsson "Julie". As from the little information/rummors I heard about it, it's "suppose" to be like an X10 with a qwerty keyboard. Just not sure if it's actually going to get android or windows phone 7....

i doubt the battery can last long enough for decent use after OC nearly 100%
anyone tried OC x10 what's the limit?

Hi,
I have in my hands HTC Desire and Xperia X10. It's clear that Desire is faster than X10. Everything related to graphics are faster and smooth.
HTC Sense is really, really beautiful and in my opinion it is smooth as iphone (graphically, other aspects Desire won easily).
I'm curious to know if when SE update X10 to Android 2.1 we will have improvement of speed and finally have smooth movements without flickering.
Desire right now has the best user experience, no lags, no flickering in movements, best response in touch screen. But I can't deny that X10 its the most beautiful design (despite not fit in my pocket very well hehe), its something that really attract attention and everybody love it. Timescape also is really nice application, but the Android 1.6 is just a simple Android 1.6, no nice features htc sense ofc.
So, someone believe that with Android 2.1 we will have these improvements (speed graphically) for X10?
I read somewhere that when the x10 gets a 2.1 update, the screen will display 16million colours, not sure how accurate this information is but if its true, that would be great

Yeah.. about second half of 2010, that's anytime between middle of summer... and christmas... that's a long wait...
i dont think they said second half, didnt they say second quarter? thats apr-jun
I would guess second half. Phone was only just released in Canada in second quarter. We can hope though.
even with 1.6 the screen color is nice already because of the 24bit color ala palm pre.
i think is more of the memory issue since the x10 has only 384MB ram.
Yeah, I don't know, but I have tested both phones, Desire and X10, of course the design of X10 is more beautiful then Desire, however, Desire is so fast that it compensate the beauty. At the end, it fit very well in my pocket (x10 doesn't fit because of the square form), testing the browser I could see that Desire is faster.
At the end, I believe that SE needs to improve a lot, when they arrive there, for sure I'll change to it, but for now, I'll stay with who have more life experience with Android, HTC Sense is really good, I'm impressed how it is fast!
I hope that with Android 2.1 X10 become faster.

ROM and RAM are two different things. the 414 you have is Free ROM, which is used to install Apps, not the RAM.

I hardly think it's because of "only" 384MB RAM. It's still quite enough and my X10 never gets slow or low on RAM. I think it's because of 1.6 not being able to fully utilize the hardware in the phone!

i agree, i have everytime around 120mb-150mb memory left, on my motorola milestone it was around 50mb, so i'm satisfied with this result. even on my motorola it was still fast, so it's only better
There are a bucktetload of tiny fixes outside of the big ones that tend to get all the press as far as the changes going from 1.6 to 2.1. All these little things add up. I would be surprised if the X10 does not move straight to froyo though. With the latest rumurs being september (these also include the fact that multi touch may in fact work, check the phone sites like phonearena) and internal testers at google already running hardware on froyo it seems a more likely target.

Humm, even if the people come and say that X10 never will have multitouch I'll just believe when someone disassembly it and show me that there are no hardware capable to do it inside. I just believe that SE is mentioning that is not multitouch capable because of 1.6.
Well, it's upgrade time on my contract, and I have narrowed it (quite easily) down to two devices, the Legend and the Desire.
The legend will cost me exactly nothing to upgrade to, and the Desire will cost a little (a lot) more than I can currently afford.
My question is, do I look for a way to afford the Desire or go for the Legend?
Please give your vote and a comment/reason, or suggest a third/fourth.... device instead (X10 was considered and disgarded due to lack of multitouch and because I don't want to be left in the dust with Android 1.6 until september).

because, 1ghz snapdragon processor, its newer so will be supported longer by htc, better battery life (legends is s***)

You meant desire, right?
Otherwise there is no sense in your sentence
Well that depends on how much you have to pay for the desire. Let me sum up for you what the desire has and the legend doesn't.
Desire:
Flash support, 1Ghz snapdragon, bigger screen thus resulting in more space for fingers to land in..... higher resolution 480 X 800 WVGA RAM: 576 MB
vs
Legend
No flash support (well probably it wel get flash from xda members. But according to adobe it won't run smooth on the legend and our hero's)
600Mhz processor, same screen size as hero 320 x 480 HVGA only 384 mb ram
Hope that helps you out a bit.
If you have a hero and you would buy a legend you'd only see some improvement in the speed section, it's probably not fully capable to run future android version (and the desire is since it's able to run flash 10)
If you buy a desire you buy the fastest htc around, with probably more support in later versions.
If I was in your position,... I'd switch to a sim only contract, then wait for something similar to the incredible.
I was planning on getting a desire this month,... but am still happy with my hero (even more now its overclocked).
I reckon I'll be happy for another 3 - 6 months yet. I'd just like a slightly better camera,.... n a hardware keyboard would be nice.
I know, I know,... you could end up waiting forever wanting something slightly better then whats currently on the market to come out.
None of them.
I'm looking forward to devices like the samsung galaxy S, Lumigon t1, Motorola Shadow.
My next device won't be one from HTC.
I'm watching how often HTC is updating their new devices, desire and legend. If they do it better than they do it on hero right now, my device after the next device will be one from HTC again.

None of them wasn't an option, if you don't have anything to do rather then put htc on your blacklist that's you're choice, don't try to decide for others.
And samsung never ever released an update afaik so have fun with your never upgradebla samsung. And I haven't seen motorola giving any updates either.
Stop nagging
If I were you I would go for the Desire, unless another Snapdragon is due to b integrated into devices then you are at least going to get enough time with the latest handset during your contract before you start seeing thinks like 2.2+ render you phone old...
Something with 720p video, a snapdragon cpu and 2.1 shipped, wouldn't go a miss!
I also considered the X10 for the cracking cameras Sony add but like you say the 2.1 update is a a fair bit off, and they haven't even rooted it yet afaik..
I had a quick go on a mates Desire, and its defiantly faster and the bigger screen is nice but I didn't feel it was the amazing leap over the Hero that most people have made it out to be. If there is no rush I would defiantly wait another 6 months to see whats available then. Maybe the 2.2 update will wow me more but thats just my current opinion.

Agree.. + don't forget that htc is using cheap hardware (eg: SoC*, display**), so if you want pure performance go with an ARM Cortex + PowerVR.
* i prefer the arm cortex + power vr combination, even motorola milestone at 550 Mhz is better (thanks to PowerVR) on some tasks than the over hyped snapdragon cpu.
** see the multiple videos that show the multitouch bug, htc is using a cheap dualtouch display ..
I don't trust anymore qualcomm/htc combination. tired of crap performance.
So, my next device will be one with ARM Cortex + PowerVR + a proper multitouch display (eg: such as in motorola milestone). If you want true performance I recommend you this combination.
Neither for me..
The Desire has a pentile AMOLED display that isn't TRUE WVGA (RGB subpixels in one pixel)
Both the Desire and Legend use ClearPad 2000 for their touch screens which do not have proper multitouch support (same problem with N1)
I'd wait a little longer for the next round of FroYo devices
[LONG POST WARNING ]
there might be some typos and some unintentional things (tone of writing this may be)... I do not mean to offend any one... u can consider the following as a random blog post not targetting anyone
please dont laugh.. i am not good at these kind of things...
Ok now before u start flaming and start fanboy-wars on this, I suggest that u read the full content…
I AM NOT A SE FANBOY!
I have tried to provide an unbiased review of Samsung Galaxy S2 from point of view of a Xperia X10 user/android user… oh btw I am writing this considering that u use custom kernels on X10!
Some background… I have primarily used Symbain phones for almost 4-5 yrs… just last year I bought my first android phone the Xperia X10! Since then I have bought many androids for myself, my friends & family… I have personally used Motorola Milestone, SE Xperia Arc, LG Optimus One and now just last week I got the Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGS2)…
this will be sort of comparison between SGS2 and X10 and my personal opinion regrading both these devices as they CURRENTLY stand
[ THE SPECS ]
The SGS2 is a beast!
The most significant difference is the screen… Super AMOLED PLUS which quite frankly is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY I have EVER USED! It just blows away the LCD/LED displays (compared to X10 which has LCD display) Now before some ppl catch my throat saying that “colors are not ‘natural’” let me share with u that there is a setting provided by Samsung called “Background Effect” which basically can allow u to adjust the saturation & contrast of the images on screen! For the “natural color” minded folks u can use the “movie” option… others can enjoy the “Standard” or better “Dynamic” options…
It has 4.3’’ screen which is slightly bulky in hand and little bit hard to grip (compared to X10 which has 4’’ screen) frankly the difference is only noticeable if u are watching videos…
It has 1.2 Ghz dual core ARM-9 chips (compared to X10 single core 1 Ghz Arm-8 chip)
very powerful dedicated GPU [Mali-400] which will handle any of the latest games u can throw at it! (compared to Adreno 200 on X10)
sgs2 has 836 MB User accessible RAM (compared to 280 MB on X10)
The internal memory is eMMC so there is actually an microSD card used for system, data, etc… so the actual usable /data partition is 2GB!!!! (compared to 465MB on X10)
Also the internal sdcard has 12 GB free space [I have the SGS2 16GB version] AND there is room for additional external SDCARD!!! (compared to 8GB supplied by SE for X10)
SGS2 supports simultaneous 10 point finger recognition! Take that multi touch games!
SGS2 has lots cool features like HDMI output/USB On-the-GO [but u will need to buy these adapter/cables separately]
Front facing camera and fullHD (1920x1080p) recording are few other perks (x10 can do 720p recording)
SGS2 has 1650 mAh battery compared to 1500 mAh of X10
SGS2 has HSPA+ (21 Megabit/sec) compared to HSDPA (7.2 Megabit/sec) on X10
And ofcourse SGS2 comes with unlocked bootloader (there is a thing called download-mode binary counter which keeps a tab on how many time u flashed using the flashing tool ODIN, though this can be reset using a hack )
[ ACTUAL USAGE ]
SGS2 just comfortably cruises thru menus/etc… no lag whtsoever... menu scrolling/web browsing anything u throw at it SGS2 will just devastate it
Using live wallpaers, having 10 tabs open in browser, multitasking with a game running in the background and then scrolling thru menus it doesn’t LAG!
[ THE GOODIES ]
Ok now comes the dev aspect, with SGS2 being adapted by so many users/devs, within just 2 months of release, there are already tons of ROMs/Kernels/themes/etc…
U have the freedom to choose overclock/undervolt/overvolt kernels… there are even apps to control voltage of every frequency set! U can overclock/regulate the GPU too! Some guys over at SGS2 forums run it at 1.9Ghz without a hitch! (compared to X10 which only is able to handle 1.1 Ghz overclock)
btw this doesnt mean that i dont respect/honor our devs here at X10 sub-forums... i have a HUGE respect for them and all that they have achieved and are currently doing/working on... they have done / are doing a great job to make our terribly limited device (cause of manufacturer policies) awesome & rocking
[ THE BAD / UGLY ]
Ok the screen resolution on SGS2 is really bad... I mean seriously, a 4.3’’ screen deserves 960×540 (qHD) resolution not 800x480… sure u can change dpi but then that’s NOT TRULY changing resolution…
There is no hardware camera button! It is very funny but seriously I miss the camera button…
when will they get good XENON flash in top end android devices? i really miss the xenon flash from my old Nokia N82
another problem is that there is NO LED FOR NOTIFICATIONS
A lot of defective display units are there… I myself had this problem and had to get it replaced with a new piece… also many users at SGS2 forums have reported this…
Device heats up even using stock FW… I was playing Modern Combat 2 for 15-20 mins and I could feel the back of the device getting really warm…
NOW THE BIGGEST ISSUE there are not many apps currently available which can make use of dual core processors… may be multi-threaded/multi-core optimized apps will take time to get in but currently not many apps can make use of this…
[ MY VIEWS ]
Now from this point forward are my personal views/opinions... I am not telling u to do something… this is just wht I personally feel… if u wish u can read this whole thing and say “wht a bunch of crap… he doenst know wht he is talking abt” I don’t mind that, those are ur views these are mine
The final decision if u want to buy a new phone ALWAYS is with YOU AND YOU ONLY!
As I said before SGS2 is a great device but there are some thing to consider before u UPGRADE… keep in mind that the following views/opinions are only valid if u are upgrading from an X10 to a SGS2… if u are upgrading from sub-1Ghz phone then this will not matter...
I wouldn’t call an upgrade from X10 to SGS2 a BIG GAME CHANGING thing… there is not much difference in 4.3’’ and 4’’ screen sizes… also if u have been using custom kernels on X10 (fps uncapped /overclocked) then SGS2 feels slightly smoother… the screen/image quality is obviously better on the SGS2... But honestly 16million colors (SGS2) vs 65k colors (x10) is not that great a difference, it is only noticeable in some images/videos which have heavy gradation…
The big issues is that currently there are not many apps that can use this much power… then there is the practical issue… see u can play games/overclock/etc for some time BUT most of the time (>80%) u will be running the device @ 800Mhz to 200 Mhz (lowest speed which can be set)…
Though if u are upgrading from a 600Mhz phone (with < 3.5’’ screen size) then SGS2 is a TOTALLY different experience…
One thing to keep in mind currently most of the issues faced by us X10 users (like camera not fully working in 2.2+ custom roms, stability of custom kernels) are related to the restrictions imposed by SE… thing may improve once we get the GB update…
[ FINAL REMARKS ]
So keeping all of the above in mind here are my recommendations
Why u shouldn’t jump to dual-core bandwagon? (AS OF NOW)
If you still have a few months left on you contract and if u don’t mind a few sec delay/slight lag I recommend that u WAIT FOR NEXT generation phone… I am not talking about quad core/etc… frankly CURRENTLY there is just no point for a 2+ core phone… even 2 cores is an overkill! What I suggest is that u wait for next gen technology (28nm fabrication) which will greatly improve battery life… hold on till the apps/games can actually make use of the tremendous processing power packed into today’s dual core phones…
Who should go for this upgrade?
u just liked it
u are upgrading for < 1Ghz phones
u have the money and don’t mind spending that much for the BEST PHONE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE
u are a POWER USER and do heavy multitasking, need to play latest games at max frame rate
u want an additional phone to use (like me )
u are stuck on X10 stock 2.1 rom and don’t want to install custom roms/kernels
u are totally frustrated with the X10 and don’t want to wait for GB upgrade
why currently u shouldn’t “upgrade” to any other single core phone?
See single core phones are already very old hardware… there is no point spending so much money on a single core phone which will be outdated in next 6 to 8 months (tops)…
Instead wait for a few more months and then get a dual core phone
I hope u guys appreciate this and it helps those who are currently planning to u buy a new phone…
P.S.: I hope u have noticed that I keep saying CURRENTLY, cause all that I have psoted above (my views/opinions) is only valid for things UPTO THIS POINT (July 8, 2011 01:00 AM GMT+05:30)… technology is an every changing thing and wht is best today wont be the best (or even good) tomorrow!
WOW, nice...thanks for the review! I myself own a X10 but the current news of GB 2.3.3 & unlocked bootloader is really awesome!
Enjoy your S2 buddy
I tried a SGS2 couple of days back and only one thing annoyed me the most. The home button takes ages to wake the phone up from sleep. I know it is nothing but it annoyed me a lot Apart from that nothing to complain. I will surely get it once I can go to store

load of c**p!
a) dual core is using more battery than single core.
b) dual core price is much larger than single core + no full usage of dualcore.
c) single core processors won't be outdated. NEVER! Why? For example in Croatia
i payed like half my pay for year old X10 and my pay is like 600 usd per month, imagine how much would cost dual core?
Conclusion dual-core is for gamer freaks... / ppl that don't get that "lag" here or there is normal thing from pc to smart phone...
Find me one pc / phone that has never had any lag in any game / program and i will ... something with stone ...
But review is ..... long and detailed ..... and very usefull! Thanks!
Very nice and thorough review, thanks a lot!
Turns out that those were exactly my thoughts too. My cousin bought the SGS 2 and even though it feels great in use, I want to wait another year, save some serious money and buy the top phone available then.

b) dual core price is much larger than single core + no full usage of dualcore.

agree with u on some aspects BUT here is some info if u didnt already know...
dual core doenst use more battery... it only kicks in after certain speeds... so if u are idling (say 500mhz/200mhz) then only single core is active... only when u need more processing the other core (s) get active... something similar to turbo boost but the other way

OH BTW currently andorid doesn't native-ly support gpu based screen/UI/framework acceleration...

i know! its damn annoying... pulser_g2 has a dev thread going on regarding that!
What I find absolutely stupid about Android as a whole is, that you need a frigging dualcore phone to run it smooth 'ala iOS. I mean smooth as in the UI running at a constant framerate without any dips at all. That was the only reason I was looking up to Apple's devices for a while.
Then SGS2 happened. Now I know what my next phone is.
Thanks for this great review...all i can said is that you are perfectly right about dual core phones advantages! have you already tried to compare arc display with sgs2 one?and how much better is arc compared to x10? thanks doom..nice work!

well the problem is that iOS supports gpu based acceleration of UI! which android doesnt! android depends completely on CPU for UI rendering which causes this lag... u can check even on HC this is a problem... BUT once the gpu acceleration based apis are in place then OH MAN will these things fly!

Also I heard the camera is not as good as Arc's? Atleast it records video in 1080p though
Well SE in hardware is always in time of the needs if you can see arc was the best smart phone in 2011 above SGS2 and now there is a dual core xperia smartphone on the target but of course it will come when the software is totally ready for that i would like to see the xperia duo

ios runs smoothly because it's a much simpler platform than android. If apple ever get the balls to revamp their os to support homescreens and widgets, I am pretty sure the performance would dip significantly.

I took some photos with the SGS II and the quality was superb.
Lightning conditions were not good, but still there was very little noise,
the picture was sharp and the colors vivid.
Only thing is, there was some short of pink hue in the corners of the picture.
I don't know if that's the case for this phone, or that one was faulty.
Also, the flash is VERY BRIGHT!!!!!!
What do you think about the camera Doom?
NOW THE BIGGEST ISSUE there are not many apps currently available which can make use of dual core processors… may be multi-threaded/multi-core optimized apps will take time to get in but currently not many apps can make use of this…
Nice review, but these things made me happy that I haven't bought a SGS2 yet!! I would miss the camera button, led, and especially devective unit which are much of them... Very much... Great phone, but lacks of the most standard functions of a smartphone... Maybe that's why the phone is so thin... Also I've heard from many SGS2 users that there is a some kind of yellow shine on the left side of the screen. Super phone, but little things that aren't worth for this price... It's a smart choise from me to wait till any quad-core phone, and I really hope there will come a very sexy Nexus Quad-core phone. Camera is also nice, but for real recording get a camcorder LOL.
Before fanboys start screaming at me, PHONE IS GREAT but just these things...
And DooM, don't let our negative things/or things the x10 has but SGS2 not have spoil the fun. Enjoy your new super phone!
EDIT:
Doom, you also talked about higher resolution. Well, that's not possible on AMOLED screens. They can only support up to what the SGS2 now has...
Hi guys
I want to buy a new smartphone and I am thinking about samsung galaxy s i9000 because it's obviously very good phone and currently the price is very reasonable. But this phone has only 512 ram and I want for example at the same time to use web browser, skype, listen music, etc. I mean is all that ok for a phone or it will start lagging a lot? Maybe it's not worth buying it cause it's already 1 year old and phones with 2x more ram and dual core cpus comming, so maybe it's worth waiting for them to get cheaper? Or it's still very good investment for a price? (SGS2 costs like 1.7x more so too much for me)
Have a look at that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173923
I still would recommend it, especially because it's now about 300€ and there are only a few little bugs left, which i hope will be fixed with the next update (like browser-scrolling etc.). Also battery life is very good since JVO i think.
Today I was doing a side by side comparison on my 9000 / 2.3.4 with my cousins 9003 / 2.3.3
Edit SGS from 3 / 2.3.4 vs SGS2 from craphonewhorehouse / 2.3.3
the 9003 is physically bigger, and has a physically bigger screen, and it has a dual core cpu...... but......
speaking *personally* the 9003 is a little too big, in fact the 9000 is already pushing the boundaries on size for a "phone"
the bigger screen in nice, but I know someone who uses a 7" galaxy tab as a phone, for phone / mms / email the 9000 screen is as big as I want.
dual core? well if I played games I might need it, but the single core on my 9000 does everything *I* ask it to, including playing video seamlessly.
=========================================
sweet **** all in it so far, all personal preferences...
the REAL difference is the 9000 is mature, incredibly well known, with an incredible set of resources and knowledge.
the REAL difference is not being the latest and greatest any more, the 9000 is cheaper, significantly cheaper.
I was offered a straight swap today 9000 <> 9003, I turned it down.

Thanks for opinions.
Well the main thing for me I think is RAM. Is SGS not slow when having several programs running (skype, web browser, music..)?
I only recently got an i9000 and found it really doesn't matter about its age, it performs incredibly well, and has the advantage of having a massive load of excellent custom roms to use.

Besides the the missing dual core, I think i9000 is gold for it's value. Which I might add, is running current performance standard for all phones since dual core is considered high end atm.

I9003 don't have dual core cpu it's 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, PowerVR SGX530 GPU, TI OMAP 3630 chipset
you can buy i9000 for now as it's still one of the fastest phones and next year you will be able to buy i9100 at less once galaxy s 3 comes
I'd go for a newer phone than the Galaxy S if it had a greater variety of mods/kernels. I don't think that's going to happen for a while =P
The Galaxy S II looks promising, though.
The SGS has a good balance between hardware specs and software / os requirements.
The SGS 2 doesn't have this balance. At this time, 99% of the users simply don't use that extra hardware capacity.
In my view, the decision to purchase an SGS2 vs an SGS really boils down to the screen and the camera. If you want the Full HD video recording, improved camera and better screen and you think the price premium warrants it - then go for SGS2.
But if you think the SGS is more than satisfactory in these areas, then SGS it is.
People talk about the improved hardware specs of the SGS2... but until that translates into real-life improvements "my SGS2 can do this...and your SGS can't" then we simply won't see people rushing out to buy them.
You can guy mine if you want....comes boxed with everything!
RoOSTA
Recently got one. I look at it as a mid range phone with lots of custom roms. For me, its a great phone to start off for Android due to its resources.
i've only gotten mine for about 2 months now, and it's worth it, came from a wildfire... and i must say the community here is heaps more different than the wildfire community (i enjoy it here more)... the wildfire community had some ppl that annoyed me so much and were so clueless about everything lol

You should definitively go for the SGS.
I got mine 2 months ago, and I'm sure I'm going to still like my phone in 2 or 3 years, if it makes it through
Get the sgs, then get the sgs 2 in 18 months when its cheap (if you can handle large size) sgs is great, android apps not really able to fully exploit dual core yet

Seems like the recently released low-end Galaxy Pocket is going to get ICS at some point.
Galaxy Pocket has a single core processor running at 832 MHz, size of the screen is 2.8".
This is what Samsung says about this phone (in Finnish):
"Tekniset tiedot: Galaxy Pocket:ssä on 2,8 tuuman LCD-näyttö, jonka tarkkuus on 240x320 pikseliä. Laitteessa on 832 MHz:n suoritin ja Android 2.3 -käyttöjärjestelmä (Android 4.0 päivitys tulossa)."
Same translated:
"Specs: Galaxy Pocket has an 2.8" inch LCD-screen, resolution is 240x320. The device has a 832 MHz processor and Android 2.3 operating system (Android 4.0 update is coming)."
Source: http://www.samsung.com/fi/news/prod...ng-galaxy-pocket-pieni-alypuhelin-suuri-sydan
This makes me wonder, if such low-end device can run ICS, why wouldn't SGS be able to do that?
me too
waiting for answer.
Its not that the SGS cant run ICS, the number of ICS ports out there for the SGS and the phones, such as this galaxy pocket, which are low end and are running ICS show that the SGS could eeeasily run ICS, its just that what with the SGS being a little bit older now, (the SGS3 is coming out soon, and there have been many other phones released by Samsung since the SGS, such as the SGS+ or the Galaxy S Advance etc etc) samsung dont want to put ICS on the SGS so as to force people to buy a newer phone if the want ICS from samsung.
Which i find pretty appalling on their part, a really consumers company like Sony dont do this, all their xperia line up is getting ICS!!

It's because the Galaxy S have a smaller /system partition. With full touchwiz, the ROM wouldn't fit on it. And Samsung isn't gonna take out touchwiz for an update to a 2 year old device. A smaller device like that would have smaller ROMs than SGS and the ICS will most likely fit (it's running touchwiz lite and some apps are probably generic so the entire touch wiz is smaller).
Htc is updating DHD to htc sense 4.0 with ics, makes me think how far they will update Htc One X with newer senses, unlike samsung which didn't give us even touchwiz 4 -.- I will buy as my next phone Htc One X.

The answer is one word - "marketing"
Bad for us SGS I owners....
It's just an affront to every SGS+ user. Few month old phone is not being supported anymore.
Imagine you SGS guys would still be stucked with Froyo, without even a custom port.
Well our sgs has a 4 inch 480*800 resolution screen while that device has a 2.8 inch screen which has very low resolution but that has a 850mhz processor and we only have a 1 MHz , while the difference in resolution is very high the processor frequencies aren't very far away so maybe that processor can handle ics on that device cause if low resolution.

All things you wrote have nothing to do with CPU, instead they 're GPU's job. Of course we all know SGS has amazing GPU.
One more thing, Sony Ericsson phones have higher screen resolutions and have also 1 GHz CPU's.
I would like to see ICS for SGS with TW lite like that small phone has, but It wont happen.

It maybe also related to ram, new generation of ram chips consume low ram, on sgs just the settings app takes 32mb. 0_o. I am no expert but that maybe a case. Or it may just be what the world calls 'MARKETING'.

Marketing, for sure. I'm on a SGS+ which has the same processor and GPU as e.g. the SE Arc S. And both the SE and my Samsung only have 512MB RAM but the SE will get ICS for sure. So Samsung simply does not give a **** on their users once they bought the device.
to every1 who posted here .. if we look on the flip side of this issue samsung was the 1st to give us a feature complete phone 2 yrs ago .. so much so that a lot of ppl got the same phone .. because of that now we have tons of devs working to develop fr this device .. and i think we should be happy that we have a device whic has widespread use .. as for ics .. there are tons of roms out there that are not so hard to install with a little bit of reading .. and for those who want touchwiz .. even that is ported over from the sgs2 and is close to being a daily rom .. just my 2cents

Na, not everyone. Or you might replace years with months.
Eclair, froyo, gingerbread. More updates than many devices can boast. Some HTC 's are still on froyo........ I for one am quite satisfied with the amount and frequency of updates the sgs has received over the last couple of years.

I strongly recommend you to install ICS from XDA development, together with Semaphore kernel. It is working great in my device, and battery consumption is less than with Gingerbread.
As it is plain Google software, as extra bonus you get the original calendar app, which improves a lot the Samsung one if you are only using google calendar.
Regards
this really sucks
whatever the reason, i would love to see SGS with ICS and TW4
