Two questions about SEUS update - XPERIA X10 General

As title says:
1. Is the software that comes with x10 considered SEUS or do you have to use the programa you download from Sony Ericsson website (the one you gotta use with the cell phone turned off)?
2. Updating using Seus wipes your data?

1. SEUS is Sony Ericsson Update Service. You have to download it. Don't know if the one that comes with PC Companion is the same
2. Updating by SEUS have two options: 1. Update keeping your data or 2. Install new firmware and wipe it all
regards

Thank you very much.

But updating DOES NOT remove anything from your SDCARD, so the data on the memory card is safe.

Neither touches anything on your memory card, just your phone data.

is this a full debrand? any extra programmes and what benefits?
yep full debrand, one tip though remove your sd card before doing hard spl, no more vodafone stuff, runs a lot smoother and it downloads all the needed vodafone internet settings on reboot opera is like night and day now doing what it should and not restricted - wifi is also a lot better + you can now get more uptodate roms direct useing se update. (not tried this yet). All good

i dont hve a card reader how will i format m memory card?
dont need a card reader most likely your card is already fat32, as for copying the file rom to the card just do it as you would normaly transfer something to the phone. If you are going to try it remeber it is risky and could brick your phone if done wrong.

im currently formatting mem card, taking a long time
the NBHUTIL folder which is also extracted do we use that?
i dont see it mentioned.
no not needed
im at the 2nd stage and there a white screen saying loading...
is this normal?
is your sd card in the phone, if it is remove it then run hard spl without the card inserted and it will work, then just follow the guide rename the rom place onto your sd card remove battery, put battery back in hold volume down key and press hold power button at same time until you get the 4 colour screen and follow the instructions displayed on your phone.

I don't understand
What do you mean ?
Reinstall what ?
I thought PC Companion is a tool for connecting the PC with the phone.
How would this help me out ?
I need the data !

PC companion will not restore SD card data
portishead850 sorry, but you totally lost your data in your SD card..
look for data recovery program and try to revive the deleted data from your formatted sd, i've done this while ago although some data aren't recoverable.
Try this one here
Or you can read more here
Hope this help.
Many,many thanks guys.
I'll give it a try.

[Q] should the sdcard be cleaned up when changing user and installing new rom?

I have searched but have not found a definitive answer.
I am giving my x8 to someone, and at the same time I'll install them miniCm (not it has stock 2.1).
What is the recommended method to deal with all the crap I have accumulated in my sdcard?
-Should it be formated/deleted?
-if so how? format in some way? just connect usb and delete everything in \sdcard?
- when must it be done? just before installing new rom?
thanks in advance
just delete everything after you install the rom and you will be allright
Well, after you have miniCM up and running do a full wipe in xRecovery and delete all PERSONAL files on SD card, such as xRecovery backups, music, vcards and so on. The rest may remain, the stock SD card contains crap such as tutorial, SE videos, PC Companion and so forth, and there might be some config files here and there, but they are of no importance...
I just left my card after installing and every thing was fine,

ok, that is what I did, manually delete stuff that I thought was no longer usable for the new user, but I hoped there was a more automated/sure/efficient way to accomplish this.
thanks
Well, you can always make a formatting in windows or xRecovery, but you'd lose all the SE stock stuff that was on the SD card...

Safest or best way to clean off SD card?

I'm thankful for some things that remain on my SD card; that allows me to reinstall quickly....but there are things that are there from previous installs and I'm not sure what belongs and what doesn't.
What's the best or safest way to start fresh? Sort of like formatting a PC?
Backup your music pictures etc... Then format sd card, reinstall rom put music pictures etc again on your ROM and you've got a clean installation! Formatting is possilbe in xrecovery!
Ok.....I was hoping to avoid another rom install...lol...
Would this work?
1.) Save current install as Xrecovery back up
2.) Save that Xrecovery back up folder to my laptop.
3.) format SD
4.) Reinstall Rom
5.) Put the saved Xrecovery back up folder onto my X10.
6.) Restore from that back up.
Would this accomplish the same thing?

WHATEVER YOU DO - DON"T REFORMAT IN WINDOWS WITHOUT SD CARD ASSOC SOFTWARE : http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Windows can put cryptographic crap on the card making it useless in Android.
The internal format software is flaky in 2.1 and may or may not delete correctly.

Yes that possible.
Btw, don't let him scare you. Formatting with xRecovery is TOTALLY safe.

I said the internal android is flaky, and Windows without the special formatting software. I said nothing about any apps. Part of android's problems may be due to the system not properly disconnecting app that use the card as it tries to format. Xrecovery's mini-loader would get around that issue.

After what you got this ? Is it after installing new ROM ?
If this problem is same with the problem in S III, maybe you can backup your phone memory before install the ROM, do full wipe when install the ROM, and restore after that.
My reference comes from one of S III thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32434515&postcount=2026
If this work, credit is to him
