Safest or best way to clean off SD card? - XPERIA X10 General

I'm thankful for some things that remain on my SD card; that allows me to reinstall quickly....but there are things that are there from previous installs and I'm not sure what belongs and what doesn't.
What's the best or safest way to start fresh? Sort of like formatting a PC?

Backup your music pictures etc... Then format sd card, reinstall rom put music pictures etc again on your ROM and you've got a clean installation! Formatting is possilbe in xrecovery!

Ok.....I was hoping to avoid another rom install...lol...
Would this work?
1.) Save current install as Xrecovery back up
2.) Save that Xrecovery back up folder to my laptop.
3.) format SD
4.) Reinstall Rom
5.) Put the saved Xrecovery back up folder onto my X10.
6.) Restore from that back up.
Would this accomplish the same thing?

WHATEVER YOU DO - DON"T REFORMAT IN WINDOWS WITHOUT SD CARD ASSOC SOFTWARE : http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Windows can put cryptographic crap on the card making it useless in Android.
The internal format software is flaky in 2.1 and may or may not delete correctly.

Yes that possible.
Btw, don't let him scare you. Formatting with xRecovery is TOTALLY safe.

I said the internal android is flaky, and Windows without the special formatting software. I said nothing about any apps. Part of android's problems may be due to the system not properly disconnecting app that use the card as it tries to format. Xrecovery's mini-loader would get around that issue.

Easiest way to format my SD card and retain my data?

Hey guys,
I'm having a few issues w my X10, my call log and contacts dont show up half the time when I boot up my phone and my last call widget always freezes. It's really really bugging me and I think I need to try formatting my SD card.
How do I format my SD card and put all my data back on it after so my phone is the same after the format?
Thanks
Call log, contacts, etc have nothing to do with the sdcard, unless you choose to back them up - which is the only time they'll be on there.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the advice.... problem for me right now is if that if Call log, contacts, etc have nothing to do with the sdcard then formatting my SD card is not what I need to do
I have titanium backup but I just got it today with root and am not sure how to reformat my phone while restoring everyhitng to how it is right now
Back everything up using titanium, and then do a factory reset.
Reinstall titanium, then restore.
Is suggest mybackup n al
helps you save other stuff 2 such as contacts n msgz

thanks for all the help guys! gonna do a factory reset now... hoping for the best
thanks!
I just recently factory reset my phone and I was wondering what was the easiest way to get root back on my phone.
I'm content with keeping R2BA023 pretty much just because I know it works and my battery is consistent enough for me to get through an average day, so reflashing with one of the newer models and then rooting isn't exactly what I want to do.
nm got it!
just restored... titanium backup is the nuts
fk, just did a restore and the problem is still there.... guess I have to try formatting SD card now...
If I want to format, do I plug phone to the computer, mount SD card -> copy all files to my computer -> format sd card -> copy all files back to SD card -> unmount SD card
Is that what I do?
Thanks!
Yup pretty much

see post #5, give it a try and then report back? I would like to know how that works.
This wont work for me. When I orginally installed WP7 my Scandisk microSD card did not format, so I have no memory left on my phone. Its running the software with SD card right now. So I need to reinstall it, and I just want to see if all i need to do is put it in USB flasher and reinstall, or do i need to back all the way to the orginal rom and start from the begining
No you shouldn't have to start all the way over. Just take batt out and back in and turn on then hold end key (red) untill the magldr menu shows up then select option 5 I think it is. Then connect phone to computer and click on the DAF file from your ROM file.
make sure your SD Card is in before doing this. WP7 formats it automatically.
Does this help?
quick change
Have you tried the simple method...
go to settings > about
click [reset your phone]
when the phone powers off, swap the SD cards
the phone will reboot and format the new card.
your OS is on NAND, but is using the card as part of the opperatign space.
Good luck.

[Q] should the sdcard be cleaned up when changing user and installing new rom?

I have searched but have not found a definitive answer.
I am giving my x8 to someone, and at the same time I'll install them miniCm (not it has stock 2.1).
What is the recommended method to deal with all the crap I have accumulated in my sdcard?
-Should it be formated/deleted?
-if so how? format in some way? just connect usb and delete everything in \sdcard?
- when must it be done? just before installing new rom?
thanks in advance
just delete everything after you install the rom and you will be allright
Well, after you have miniCM up and running do a full wipe in xRecovery and delete all PERSONAL files on SD card, such as xRecovery backups, music, vcards and so on. The rest may remain, the stock SD card contains crap such as tutorial, SE videos, PC Companion and so forth, and there might be some config files here and there, but they are of no importance...
I just left my card after installing and every thing was fine,

ok, that is what I did, manually delete stuff that I thought was no longer usable for the new user, but I hoped there was a more automated/sure/efficient way to accomplish this.
thanks
Well, you can always make a formatting in windows or xRecovery, but you'd lose all the SE stock stuff that was on the SD card...

[Q] Moving ROM from SD to another

Hi,
I have question , I installed the a NAND ROM using 4GB SD card but I need more space so I purchased new SD with 8GB space.
How can I transfer the part of ROM installed on the SD from the old one to the newly purchased one without losing any data.
If I were in your shoes, I'd make a full backup of my Current ROM with the old sd in. Then, I'd insert the new card and restore the back up. (of course after making the required partition).

The phone will not hang if you've got the ROM correctly on NAND. Also, try making both partitions primary, and windows on the pc will not be able to read the ext partition.

Why are you removing it while the device is on?
You should do this:
Keep Original SD card in
Boot Phone into CWM and make a back up
After it finishes, Turn off phone, put old sd card in PC, copy recent back up there, remove old and put new sd in pc and copy the back up to it
After making the partition on the new sd, put it (the new card) in your phone and boot up
Go to CWM, and restore your recently made backup
after it's done, reboot phone normally
Also, do not remove the sd-card while the phone is active ..
Because we, eu users, need some system files to be on the card and by removing it the device may become inoperative .

Sorry for late response.
Are you sure you are setting the exact partitions on your sd-card with the same settings?

6.0 update external storage?

Ater I update to 6.0 and the external sd card is formated that means I will lose all the apps and games I have already moved to the ext car correct? Because there is still data on the internal storage of those apps and games will the apps and games automatically download again or will I have to download each one myself?
Yes, it will format your SD and put an encryption key on it. You won't be able to use the SD on any other machine except for the one that formatted it.

Formatting a memory card will delete everything on it. Backup the existing data and then copy it back on after the format process. But, you'll have to use the device to copy because the card will be encrypted.
I think the interesting question, which also I don't know an answer to, is this:

You have to do it manually. Android doesn't know which apps you want on the Ext-SD or the internal storage.
The safest way to do this would seem to be:
-uninstall all apps currently on SD
-reinstall after SD format
If you want to preserve any other type of existing data, back it up somewhere else, then re-copy back onto the SD.

There is no need to uninstall apps on SD.
There will be a persistent notification that asks if you want to forget the SD Card (that you had earlier formatted it as Internal i.e. Adopted Storage).
If you confirm, the encryption key will be deleted from the phone, and apps stored on MicroSD won't be readable by your phone or any other device.
The question: if automatic downloading of apps will occur has been answered above by Neo3D.
And when the external sd stop working, the system crash ?
